care will be the plant food and anti-bacterial preservative to keep the plants healthy. There are many natural formulas for those preferring to avoid the chemicals found in plant food. Water is the essential element for all of life to survive. So, ensuring that your plant gets the best water for it will ensure a longer life. Soft, acidic water is best for flowers, as it optimizes the flowers' veins bringing up water to the rest of the plant. When you change the water daily, trim off a bit more of the stem to cut off any bacteria that may be living at the stem entrance, as well as reopen the stem's vein. Use a vase that allows room for the flowers. When flowers are packed together tightly, they have less air, and more chances of rotting. White sugar is really all that plants need for food, and can substitute plant food. Old wives tales often turn out to be valuable natural care methods, so read on to learn about these. As silly as some old wives tales seem, this folklore often has a scientific basis,

FLOWER CARE nowing some of a florist's secrets for flower care is the best means of ensuring a prolonged life for a healthy bouquet of flowers. The first thing to know about floral care is immediate care. You can compare a florist to a doctor in a maternity ward, checking that the newly arrived bundle is in good health and will stay that way. As soon as a floral shipment arrives, the florist gets to work, as immediate care is necessary for living plants. As our world is becoming considerably more ecologically conscious, many florists use natural methods of prolonging the life of plants, which often turn out to be less expensive methods. If you are ecologically conscious, you may prefer knowing some natural tips for floral care. There are some secrets not widely known which offer great protection and life extension to your flowers, as well as some widely known old-wives tale type of tips, which often do have merit to them. Uncovering these secrets of the trade will simplify floral care and leave your flowers looking better for longer. From the moment cut flowers are in your possession, you must take measures to care for them. Time is of the essence in these moments of primary care. Immediately place the flowers to soak in a bowl while you get yourself ready: find the appropriate vase, have the plant food at hand, find a strong pair of shears or a sharp knife, and room temperature water (on the cooler, rather than warmer, side). Fill the vase, and add whatever plant food/anti-bacterial product you plan to use. Turn on the tap, and placing each stem under the running water, cut about an inch and a half off

of each flower. It is important to keep the flower under a constant stream of water, as this will avoid air bubbles from forming, which temporarily cut off the water supply to the flower. Use either a knife or very sharp shears to cut the stems. It is a terrible mistake to cut with scissors as it will end up flattening the stem without cutting it. This will also damage the water supply from stem to flower. When cutting, cut at an angle, as that makes greater

surface area for the water to enter the stem. Cut off any leaves that will be under water, as left on the stems, they will begin to rot and promote bacterial growth. Keep your flowers out of direct sunlight and heat, and change the water often. These initial steps will ensure a healthy bouquet. For those seeking natural means of protecting and caring for flowers, the only thing to avoid from the above-mentioned description of flower

and should never be discarded off the bat. Instead of using the chemicals of plant food, throwing a copper penny into the vase really will help your plants, as copper is a natural fungicide which prevents the growth of yeast and fungus. Acidic water is healthy for flowers, as it helps keep levels of bacteria in water low. While throwing an aspirin into the vase won't bring down a fever, it will help kill bacteria, as July, 2010

FLOWER CARE aspirin is acidic. Lemon juice or vinegar, with their strong acidity, works as well. To finish up, let's divulge some little known secrets of the florists! Always keep your bouquets away from sources of electricity, as the waves emitted will dehydrate flowers. If you notice that your flowers are already dehydrated and weakening, there is a "miracle cure" hot water treatment. Wrap the ends of the stems in a newspaper, secured by a rubber band, and immerse into boiling water for about 20 seconds, followed immediately by immersion in cold water. This is known to bring life back to flowers by stimulating water absorption. Another great tip that helps prevent wilting is to keep your flowers refrigerated (in water) for a few hours before displaying

any people think the orchid plant cannot be grown indoors. When grown in the wild, the orchid plant often forms a symbiotic relationship with other plants in order to get the nutrients that it needs. The orchid plant, like most other plants, must live in the proper conditions in order for it to bloom. The three major conditions that must be controlled in order for the orchid plant to bloom are water, light, and temperature. The orchid plant receives moisture through its roots like all other plants. Avoid planting the orchid in potting soil, because it does not like to be in standing water. The orchid thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. The orchid will continue to grow

them. For instance, imagine flowers for weddings – it's often impossible to prepare the flowers the day of the wedding. So florists prepare them a day in advance, and keep them in a large fridge overnight. Florists follow these time tested tips, and

without this change, but it will not bloom. Orchids can be a difficult flower to grow indoors because they are usually found growing in nature. As long as you are familiar with the living conditions that orchids need to grow, then you can grow orchids indoors. Orchids should be grown in a similar way. If wholesale orchids are left in standing water, they will eventually die. Wholesale orchids also need to have the temperature variations of the plants that are grown in the wild. The leaf color of wholesale orchids will indicate whether or not the orchid is getting the right amount of light. Yellowish color leaves mean the plant is getting too much light. The orchid is a perennial plant that

as a result, they show off beautiful, healthy flowers. You don't need to be a florist to show off your own beautiful flowers! Taking care of a bouquet can extend its life by as much as a few weeks, and the effort needed to achieve this is quite minimal. Remember that the most decisive moments of your flowers lifespan are the moments the flowers are first in your possession. Take good care upon receiving them, and they will thrive. In caring for them, many natural methods are just as useful as plant food and preservative, so they are worth looking into. Lastly, don't ignore the folklore surrounding flower care, as it holds much wisdom and does improve a bouquet's health. As with all things natural and living, it is often the simplest things which are needed to stay healthy and strong. So keep your flowers watered and fed, and you'll have a healthy bouquet which will age beautifully!

usually has three petals. There are about 30,000 different species of orchids wildly growing worldwide. There are three basic types of orchid: epiphytic, terrestrial, and saprophytic. The first of the types of different orchids, the epiphytic orchid, grows mostly in tropic and subtopic regions. The epiphytic types of orchid are the most popular for growing indoors. The terrestrial orchid is the second of the major types of orchid. Many people who try to grow terrestrial orchids attempt to grow them in potting soil. The third of the types of orchid is saprophytic. The saprophytic orchid has underground roots just as the terrestrial orchid does. Some species of saprophytic orchids grow completely

underground and never come above. If a person can understand how to grow other plants inside the home, then they can understand how to grow orchids. July, 2010

The types of hardy annual fl owers that you can buy include calendula, foxglove, viola, sweet alyssum, stocks, cornfl owers, pansy, larkspur and the many varieties of dianthus cultivars. The half hardy annual fl owers include torenia, snow-on-themountain, blue sage, strawfl ower, baby's breath, candytuft, bells of Ireland, celoma, love-in-a-mist, and forget-me-nots.

Planting Different Flowers For Different nnual flowers are wonderful flowers to plant in your garden. You will find that many of these flowers are excellent choices for the garden as they can be grown during the different seasons. The best way to select the type of annual flowers that you want is to decide which flower varieties you want to see. You should buy the annual flowers that are appropriate for the required season, otherwise your flower plant will rot even before you have a chance to plant it. When you start selecting your annual flowers you can buy hardy annuals, half hardy annuals and tender annuals. These differences reflect the type of weather and soil conditions that these annual flowers will grow in. Hardy annuals are beautiful plants that will produce flowers even in the cold winter season. These annual flowers are planted during the spring season or fall season when the weather is not that cold. Unlike other annuals, these hardy annual flowers don't like hot weather as they are not heat tolerant. The types of hardy annual flowers that you can buy include calendula, foxglove, viola, sweet alyssum, stocks, cornflowers, pansy, larkspur and the many varieties of dianthus cultivars. These half hardy annuals don't mind damp cold weather but they can't live during the cold harsh months of winter. You will need to plant these annual flowers after the last spring frost. Unlike tender annuals, these half hardy annuals have no need of warm soil conditions for the seeds to begin sprouting. While some flower species can't

tolerate lots of hot summer weather, the half hardy annuals may sometimes droop for the weather but they will perk up in the later summer months. You can choose some tender annuals like scarlet sage, morning glory, petunias, begonias, celosia, balsam, nasturtium, and verbena. These annuals as their name suggests, are not comfortable in the cold winter months so the ideal time to grow them is three weeks after the last spring frost. Since these annual

flowers grow well in warm climates, you can expect to see them in all of their glory in the late spring and the warm months of summer. These are just a few of the hundreds of flowers that you can grow in your garden, and the riot of colors and scents that they bring will be calming and relaxing. They will absolutely make your garden look beautiful. You will also have the added benefit of flowers that grow in different seasons adding a burst of beautiful colors all through the year.

Stressful job can increase asthma risk

eing part of a stressful job can increase a person’s risk of developing asthma by 40 percent, reveals a new study. The research led by Heidelberg University in Germany tracked 5,000 men and women aged between 40 and 65 over eight years. They found that among those free of asthma at the start of the project, there was up to a 40 percent higher incidence of asthma eight years later if they suffered stress at work. The signs were long working hours, demanding schedules and uncomfortable working conditions. “Our study suggests work stress and the inability to relax after work are associated with an increased risk of asthma,”dailymail.co.uk quoted the report as saying. Earlier studies have shown stress can lead to the release of chemicals that promote allergies and disrupt the way the body halts inflammation of the airways. However, the team stressed that the absolute risk of someone developing asthma because they are overloaded at work is still very small.

omen who drank two large glasses of milk daily after their weight-lifting routine gained more muscle and lost more fat compared to women who drank sugar-based energy drinks, says a new study. “Resistance training is not a typical choice of exercise for women,” says Stu Phillips, professor in kinesiology (study of human movement) at McMaster University. “But the health benefits of resistance training are enormous: It boosts strength, bone, muscular and metabolic health in a way that other types of exercise cannot.” A previous study conducted by Phillips’ lab showed that milk increased muscle mass and fat loss in men. This new study, says Phillips, was more challenging because women not only steer clear of resistance training, they also tend to steer away from dairy products

based on the incorrect belief that dairy foods are fattening. “We expected the gains in muscle mass to be greater, but the size of the fat loss surprised us,” says Phillips. “We’re still not sure what causes this but we’re investigating that now. It could be the combination of calcium, high-quality protein, and vitamin D may be the key, and conveniently, all of these nutrients are in milk,” said Phillips. Over a 12-week period, the study monitored young women who did not use resistance-training exercise. Every day, two hours before exercising, the women were required not to eat or drink anything except water. Immediately after their exercise routine, one group consumed half litre of fat free white milk; the other group consumed a similarlooking but sugar-based energy drink. The same drinks were consumed by each group one hour after exercising. The training consisted of pushing (e.g. bench press, chest fly), pulling (e.g. seated lateral pull down, abdominal exercises without weights), and leg exercises (e.g. leg press, seated two-leg hamstring curl). Training was monitored daily one on one by personal trainers to ensure proper technique, said a McMaster University release. “Our data show that simple things like regular weightlifting exercise and milk consumption work to substantially improve women’s body composition and health.” Phillips’ lab is now following this study up with a large clinical weight loss trial in women. Bollywood he film, produced by Aamir, will be released on August 13 with an ‘A’ certificate. Aamir remarked that Peepli Live was not for kids and was okay with the adult certification. Asked what prompted him to produce a film on the issue of farmers’ suicides, Aamir said, This is only a small part of the movie. It talks about the migration problem and the divide between urban and rural India. It is a satirical film and based on some real events. Asked why he chose a satire to tell his story, he replied, Reality could be funny, it depends on all of us and what we choose to do.” The movie revolves around the character Natha, a farmer, who decides to commit suicide. According to Aamir and writerdirector Anusha Rizvi, Natha could be anyone. They reiterate that it goes beyond poverty. “We always tend to look at their poverty and forget they are people too. This is a story of a poor man and his personal life.” Asked what changes the movie will bring, Aamir and Anusha replied, “Koi revolution nahi aayega but hopefully this movie will engage a larger audience.”

IF IT’S AN AAMIR KHAN EVENT, IT HAS TO BE DIFFERENT! AND SO IT WAS WHEN AAMIR CAME TO DELHI TO PROMOTE HIS LATEST VENTURE PEEPLI LIVE.

‘AAMIR HAS

GONE MAD...’ fter shooting for three back-to-back action films, actor Abhishek Bachchan is all set to star in the sequels of Dostana and Dhoom. While he will attempt to tickle the funny bones of audiences in 'Dostana 2', Dhoom 3 will see him once again team up with co-star Uday Chopra. 'Initially, I was against doing a sequel to Dostana. I couldn't see how Tarun Mansukhani could make it funnier. But he said, 'Let me

write the script. You'll be the first person I'd narrate it to. If you don't like it, then I'd throw it away.' Believe me, Dostana 2 would be twice as funny as Dostana,' says Abhishek. About his sequel-to-a-sequel Dhoom 3, he says that Uday and his characters are the 'backbone' of the film. 'Dhoom 3 is being scripted. Dhoom is nothing without Uday and my character. We are the backbone of the film,' he adds. The actor has just returned from Greece, where he was shooting for 'Game'. The action scenes in 'Game' were the opposite of the ones in 'Raavan'. While Abhishek's character had to survive on his instincts in the jungles in 'Raavan', he has performed some slick action stunts for 'Game'. After shooting for Mani Ratnam's 'Raavan', Ashutosh Gowariker's 'Khelenge Hum

In a promo for Peepli Live, a character in the film (Journalist) takes a dig at Aamir, saying, Aamir Pagal ho gaya hai roz roz Lagaan nahi bante (Aamir has gone mad, you can’t make a film like Lagaan everyday). When asked about it, Aamir said, “ Maine socha mujh par bahot mazaak already ho raha hai, toh thoda aur hona chahiye,” Aamir made light of the comment that he was not following SRK on Twitter. He says, I just joined Twitter and will follow lots of people in future. When pressed further, he replied, there’s no issue and I would love to follow Shah Rukh. Aamir Khan was at his humorous best at this press conference and when a reporter walked a few steps before him, asking her question, the actor said, The pace at which you are moving, you will end up sitting in my lap. He even conveyed his best wishes to Big B for Kaun Banega Crorepati and said four generations in his family used to watch the programme together when it aired. When a Journalist asked Aamir to comment on Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s recent wedding, the actor laughed and said, That means the last question has come. He praised Dhoni and wished him a happy married life. After being told that it was Dhoni’s birthday, he even sang a “Happy Birthday” for him.

Jee Jaan Se' and Abhinay Deo's 'Game', which are all action movies, Abhishek has now taken a concious decision to move away from the gruelling back-breaking action for a while. Moreover, he has signed two comedies to be directed by Anees Bazmi and Vipul Shah. So is he deliberately phasing out his career from project to project, genre to genre? Protests Abhishek: 'I'm not a calculating actor. I don't choose the genres, rather the genres choose me. I follow my heart.' He adds: 'I am impatient. I like to do a lot of work. I'm happy with the zest with which I work. If tomorrow I want to do only one film a year, I'll do that. Right now, I'm enjoying being a prolific actor. How many actors can claim to have done two films as diverse as 'Paa' and 'Raavan' one after another?' July, 2010

I don’t strategise my roles: Kangana ctress Kangana Ranaut, who will sport a retro look in the upcoming film “Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai”, says she doesn’t really plan out the kind of roles she takes on. “I don’t strategise when it comes to the kind of roles I want to do. When a good film comes, I do it and if I don’t like it, I don’t...it’s not that I sit and think that this is what I want to do and this is what I don’t want to do,” Kangana told. The actress has mostly done serious roles in films like “Gangster”, “Woh Lamhe” and “Raaz - the Mystery Continues”.

Rekha’s vulnerable side

ollywood’s Greta Garbo Rekha does have a very vulnerable side to her. The actress, who makes very few appearances at parties and events looking like a zillion bucks each time, surprises her friends and close associates quite often with her concern for them. One heard that when lensman Jagdish Maali took ill, Rekha actually drove to his suburban apartment and offered to find him a doctor, get the medicines, do just about anything to get him back on his feet really quick. Guess who noticed Rekha was in the building... Jagdish’s neighbours, who rubbed their eyes in disbelief on spotting the diva in their midst. Nice to know that even if she makes rare appearances, Rekha does step out for the right reasons.

Health itamins are natural substances found in plants and animals and known as Essential nutrients for human beings. The name vitamin is obtained from “vital amines as it was originally thought that these substances were all amines. Human body uses these substances to stay healthy and support its many functions. There are two types of vitamins: watersoluble and fat-soluble. The body needs vitamins to stay healthy and a varied diet usually gives you all the vitamins you need. Vitamins do not provide energy (calories) directly, but they do help regulate energy-producing processes. With the exception of vitamin D and K, vitamins cannot be synthesized by the human body and must be obtained from the diet. Vitamins have to come from food because they are not manufactured or formed by the body. There are 13 essential vitamins and each one has a special role to play within the body, helping to regulate the processes such as cell growth and repair, reproduction and digestion. There are several roles for vitamins and trace minerals in diseases:

DHAMAK PUNJAB DEE

Fat-soluble vitamins The fat-soluble vitamins include vitamins A, D, E and K since they are soluble in fat and are absorbed by the body from the intestinal tract. The human body has to use bile acids to absorb fat-soluble vitamins. Once these vitamins are absorbed, the body stores them in body fat. When you need them, your body takes them out of storage to be used. Eating fats or oils that are not digested can cause shortages of fat-soluble vitamins. Fat soluble vitamins should not be consumed in excess as they are stored in the body and an excess can result in side effects. An excess of vitamin A may result in irritability, weight loss, dry itchy skin in children and nausea, headache, diarrhea in adults.

Characteristics of the vitamins are:

Deficiencies of vitamins and

minerals may be caused by disease states such as mal absorption; Deficiency and excess of vitamins and minerals can cause disease in and of themselves (e.g., vitamin A intoxication and liver disease); Vitamins and minerals in high doses may be used as drugs (e.g., niacin for hypercholesterolemia). Vitamins are essential for the normal growth and development of a multi-cellular organism. The developing fetus requires certain vitamins and minerals to be present at certain times. If there is serious deficiency in one or more of these nutrients, a child may develop a deficiency disease. Deficiencies of vitamins are classified as either primary or secondary.

diets. Proper storage and preparation of food can minimize vitamin loss. To reduce vitamin loss, refrigerate fresh produce, keep milk and grains away from strong light, and use the cooking water from vegetables to prepare soups. An excess of water soluble vitamins should not result in any side effects as they will disperse in the body fluids and voided in the urine. Nine of the water-soluble vitamins are known as the Bcomplex group: Thiamin (vitamin B1), Riboflavin (vitamin B2), Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Vitamin B12, Biotin, Pantothenic acid and Vitamin C. These vitamins are widely distributed in foods.

Most of the vitamins have been artificially synthesized.

Some of vitamins are solu Primary Deficiency: A pri-

mary deficiency occurs when you do not get enough of the vitamin in the food you eat. Secondary Deficiency: A secondary deficiency may be due to an underlying disorder that prevents or limits the absorption or use of the vitamin.

Types of Vitamins Vitamins, one of the most essential nutrients required by the body and can be broadly classified into two main categories i.e., water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins.

Water-soluble vitamins Water-soluble vitamins cannot be stored in the body, so you need to get them from food every day. They can be destroyed by overcooking. These are easily absorbed by the body. Human body doesn’t store large amounts of watersoluble vitamins. B-complex vitamins and vitamin C are water-soluble vitamins that are not stored in the body and must be replaced each day. These vitamins are easily destroyed or washed out during food storage and preparation. They are eliminated in urine so, body need a continuous supply of them in

ble in water and others are fat-soluble. Some vitamins are synthesized in the body. Some members of vitamin B complex are synthesized by microorganisms in the intestinal tract. Vitamins are partly destroyed and are partly excreted. Vitamins can be stored in the body to some extent, for example the fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and subcutaneous tissue. Vitamins can perform their work in very small quantities. Hence, the total daily requirement is usually very small. July, 2010

STORY

Bollywood

Jay Dhingra (Imran Khan) is an aaj ka chokra. He turns up his nose at anything that remotely resembles soppy sentimentality, even though he works as an assistant to a film maker (Samir Soni) who peddles the most improbable mush on screen. Enter, the new art director, Simran Sharma (Sonam Kapoor) who eats, sleeps and is drunk heady on ishq-vishq and all that goes with it. A diehard romantic, she even has a perfect boyfriend called Raj (Samir Dattani) who gifts her a white chrysanthemum, each time he meets her. But will the pristine white flowers score over Jay’s crazy red roses, and crazier ways? Keep guessing....

MOVIE REVIEW

First things first. Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor make an interesting pair. After the Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif coupling, this seems to be the most refreshing jodi that’s jaunting and jiving on screen. Nice chemistry. Nice tu-tumain-main (sparring). Nice physical compatibility. And a well-balanced emotional quotient. Kudos to the two of them to carry forth a film which once again doesn’t really have anything to boast about in the `storys’ department. Thematically, I Hate Luv Storys, is extremely simplistic, uni-layered and terribly predictable. Imran and Sonam do begin on the we-hate-eachother note, with Imran squirming at any and everything that’s filmy while Sonam swears by it all: pink teddys, bunches of blooms, candlelight dinners, Karan Johar films, cuddly Cupid’s bows, shooting stars, soppy dialogues and all that made-foreach-other mush. But we all know the way the wind blows, from the word go. Mush shall rule, and how! For all the digs that producer Karan Johar allows on himself (filmmaker DHAMAK PUNJAB DEE

I Hate Luv Storys

CAST Imran Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Samir Dattani, Samir Soni DIRECTION Punit Malhotra GENRE Romance

Samir Soni is actually a spoof on KJo), we know the film’s going to end up reiterating KJo — and all he translates into onscreen — as king. So, Jay Dhingra, who likes girls, but hates girly stuff, is gonna end up crying like a girl very soon. Of course, first he must ridicule Simran for all her `stoopid’ misconceptions about lurrrv, including her boyfriend Raj who besides being a frumpish bore, wears `fugly’ shirts too. But it doesn’t take long for the tables to be turned, twice over. On the one hand, Simran discovers her penchant for Mr Wrong (quirky, irreverent Imran), rather than Mr Right (politically correct Samir). And on the other hand, sceptic Imran succumbs to the love bug, red roses, raindrenched songs, airport encounters, et all. Only, their turn-overs are mistimed. So that, when Simran says `haan’, jokey Jay says `nah!’ and when Jay wanna say `yes, yes, yes!’, it’s a punctilious let’s-be-just-friends from the sobered Simran. Kya khali-peeli confusion, all this babalog blah. But hey, blah can be timepass too. Specially when it has loads of icing on it. Debutant director Punit Malhotra layers his first film with oodles of sugar coating: great locales, mast music (Vishal-Shekhar), a yummy ‘n yuppy lead pair, some laughout-loud moments and a lot of laugh-on-ourself sequences that ridicule the romcoms that roll out of the Bollywood factory (there are jibes on almost all of Karan Johar films), only to finally reiterate them as pills the public wants. On the performance front, watch out for Imran’s endless emoticons (eyebrow lifts, smirks, smileys) and his pronounced pout. And for Sonam’s svelte form and pleasant screen presence. Candy floss floats. Popcorn rules. Go, chew on it. July, 2010

Don’t think on the broad sweep, or fly high. Try to see things exactly as they are, which is never as much fun as looking on the bright side, but might prove to be more useful. It’s important not to sound too uncooperative or intolerant now.

TAURUS

Don’t judge yourself by other people’s standards. Just because not everyone fits in with your point of views, doesn’t mean you are necessarily wrong. Give yourself a pat on the back for what you have accomplished recently.

CANCER

(MAY 21 - JUN 21)

LEO

You may be looking too much for what’s wrong around you, seeing only the flaws rather than the benefits. It may not be very easy to either open up to other people because you fear they may be critical rather than supportive, but try all the same.

f there are slight delays around, don’t get discouraged. Just sound bright, breezy and bouncy, leave it for three or four days and hey presto it will all work itself out. Attitude of mind may be more important than anything else. Think positively and it will work.

VIRGO

You will be sharp about detail today. Where you have specialised tasks to do, you will crack along. You won’t find it very easy to communicate with other people. There may be some barriers or maybe you’re just putting yourself across too cautiously.

SCORPIO

You do feel a bit heavy briefly, but that may just mean you are facing the bottom line in one situation. It could be dreary in some ways, but the influences around are very good if you’ve got a lot of mental work to do, things that require disciplined thinking.

(JAN 21 - FEB 19) DHAMAK PUNJAB DEE

You do have a very critical, clear view of life now, but it may not endear you to close companions. If you continually point out to them everything that’s wrong, you will end up standing by yourself. Add a few compliments first if you have to be critical.

CAPRICOM

(NOV 23 - DEC 22)

AQUARIES

If you are holding back from a serious discussion with close companions then you need to think of some way of breaking the ice. There may have been criticism around than usual but you could also be misconstruing something you have half heard.

(AUG 24 - SEP 23)

(SEP 24 - OCT 22)

SAGITTARIUS

It’s important to break through one communication barrier now but that requires you get companions to listen respectfully to what you have to say. Also you need to put a brake on your plans since you’ll be too impatient about certain things.

(JUN 22 - JUL 23)

(JUL 24 - AUG 23)

LIBRA

If you can push frivolities to one side just temporarily and do the practical, solid, sensible, get-it-all-together kind of tasks, then you could get a lot of stuff cleared out of the way once and for all. Then you will deserve a break and can disappear off to play truant.

It is important that you fix your eagle eye on the things that need looking at. If you do, you will find that you can pick up the tiny little details that need to be sorted out. You will tend to race around so fast that you don’t step back to sort out your thinking.

(DEC 23 - JAN 20)

PISCES

Trivial amusements may not be uppermost on your mind, since they won’t work well just briefly. If you try to be too cheerful, you’ll end up feeling thwarted. Whereas if you try to be serious, you’ll make by far the best of the Saturn influences around.

Can numerology affect your savings? BOLLYWOOD

No one can deny this fact, and savings are a must. So it is greatly recommended that a numerological study must be done to analyse why savings are negligible even after good earning.

S

avings are an essential part of present day life. Numerology is very helpful in guiding one so that he/she can improve his/her savings. When I get calls/ queries from my readers regarding name correction or some other guidance, the most common problem that I find is that a majority of them lack savings. I am sure some of my readers must be thinking that the savings of a person are influenced by many factors. But before they start analysing anything I would request them to talk to people around them and they will get numerous examples where both husband and wife are working and earning a good sum, but lack savings. The cause of their low savings is not their lavish expenditure or over-spending, but rather the fact that they come across such adverse circumstances and conditions that they are compelled to spend. And such circumstances result quite often. So I would like to make it clear that the reason behind this lack of saving is the existence of some numbers in one’s name spelling and date of birth. There is no other reason why a family with a monthly income of more than Rs.40,000 is not able to save a single penny. I can surely correct the name to remove the negativity in the spelling but the major problem comes when these non-materialistic numbers come in the date of birth. No one can change the date of

birth, but still I have seen that once a numerologically lucky name spelling is given to a person, he/she will surely start having savings. But here I would also like to make it clear that no numerological correction can make one a billionaire if one is not blessed with a lucky date of birth. So a lucky date of birth is a pre-requisite and what I generally observe is that 90% of dates of birth are not unlucky. In most of the cases the cause of low or nill savings is the name spelling and not the date of birth. One day a film producer consulted me. He wanted me to analyse his name spelling and make some predictions about him. My first remark on completing his numerological analysis was – “you either have very low savings or nill savings.” He told me that it was completely true and was a bit surprised, as I had directly pointed out his greatest weakness. It was numerology that helped me to predict that. The moment I saw that the destiny number and the pyramidic root number of his name spelling worked out to an unstable number, I predicted that. I always believe, “the greatest power in the world is that of the almighty, but the second is of money.” No one can deny this fact, and savings are a must. So it is greatly recommended that a numerological study must be done to analyse why savings are negligible even after good earning.

A scared Bipasha chants Gayatri Mantra 3000 times to get through the journey

Bips chants Gayatri Mantra on flight

ipasha Basu is a nervous flier. Like most people who fear flying, she avoids being on small aircrafts, which are more susceptible to air turbulence. On Wednesday, the actress was to fly back to Mumbai from Diu after completing Priyadarshan’s Aakrosh, and her co-star Ajay Devgn convinced her to accompany him on a small chartered flight. There is a regular 64-seater direct flight from Diu to Mumbai but it takes four hours and takes a detour via Porbander. Ajay decided to return to the city sooner by chartering a flight, and flying directly with five other members of the cast and crew.

B

NEVER AGAIN...

The six-seater Cessna had them back in the city in an hour. Says producer Kumar Mangat, “Robin Bhatt, Priyadarshan, Reema Sen and George were also on the same flight.” Even though they saved 90 minutes of flying time, Bips doesn’t want to repeat the experience. The actress says, “When AJ asked me to fly with him, I was reluctant. I have a fear of small flights and have avoided them for nine years. I didn’t want to take the normal flight as it takes more time so I said yes. Also, I didn’t want to sound like a freak when everyone else was being so brave.” The actress continues, “You have to crawl into the aircraft. But Ajay pacified me by saying that he, too, is claustrophobic and that I would feel better after some time if I relaxed. After we took off, we ran into rough weather and were thrown around in our seats like potatoes in a sack. I have been reading about plane crashes for a while now and panicked.” The rest of the people on the flight, however, remained unperturbed. “Ajay, Reema and George were laughing and joking about the plane crashing while Priyan slept.” DHAMAK PUNJAB DEE

CHANT USE The actress learnt the Gayatri Mantra last year and she kept chanting it to calm her nerves. Bips adds, “It just popped into my mind. I think I must have chanted it at least 3000 times on that flight. Fortunately, the plane landed safely. I hate flying; especially in the monsoons when the weather gets choppy. Initially, Ajay and Reema were trying to scare me but when she saw how terrified I was, she asked Ajay to stop joking.” She recalls another horrifying flying experience in 2008. “It was during the monsoons and I was on a Mumbai-Bangkok flight. The turbulence never stopped and the trolley of the airhostesses jumped in the air and the food got scattered everywhere. That’s why I am scared of travelling during the monsoons and am almost paranoid about flying. But now, this Diu flight tops that experience.”

Genelia to play princess

Genelia will play a Portuguese princess and Southern superstar Prithviraj will play the leader of the gang that’s plotting to kill Vasco Da Gama. Salman Khan's suggestions like words written in gold

ARBAAZ KHAN A lot of Salman Khan's inputs were incorporated into his forthcoming home production Dabangg even after the film was completed. Producer Arbaaz Khan says his superstar brother's inputs were valuable. "Salman is a very experienced superstar. This happens to be his brother's production, which makes it a 'ghar ki baat'. He is the star of the film. I considered every suggestion from Salman to be like words written in gold and we incorporated them accordingly," said Arbaaz. "I don't think Salman has contributed more from behind-the-camera to any of his films. Earlier in some of his films he tried to make suggestions which were unfortunately not taken well. In Dabangg, we welcomed Salman's inputs warmly. He has added considerably to the film's overall mood and feeling, specially in the action scenes," added Arbaaz. Five lengthy action sequences including a climactic eruption lasting 20 minutes were devised specially by Salman in collaboration with action director S. Vijayan who did the stunts for Salman Wanted. Salman's brief to Vijayan was simple - "Make the action sequences bigger and better than Wanted." "Yes, Wanted was his big action release in 2009. We want Dabangg to be his bigger action flick in 2010. I can't deny we devised the stunts accordingly," said Arbaaz. DHAMAK PUNJAB DEE

I can’t do a Kareena er only claim to fame still happens to be her debut film Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi that had released in 2005. A hiatus of three years and then only one average film to boast of post-a-comeback would have given any actress cold feet, but Chitrangda Singh’s still optimistic about her Bollywood innings. “Why should I be worried? I have nothing to lose!” she says. But before her statement scares away filmmakers, she’s quick to clarify, “It took me long to discover what my passion was, but now I am here to give my career my 200 per cent. It’s not everyday that an actress with my track record gets such interesting offers,” she says referring to the three films she has in her kitty including Yeh Saali Zindagi with mentor Sudhir Mishra, Mani Ratnam’s Paaki with Vivek Oberoi, one with Pratik Babbar, and few others that are being finalised. As for having no release since her comeback film Sorry Bhai bombed in 2008, she says,“Yes, the wait’s been a long one for the right roles. I made a rash decision to quit, when I shouldn’t have. Guess it will take a while for the industry to realise and trust that I’m not running away this time. I am just glad that I still have the luxury to choose and don’t have to do everything coming my way out of desperation to earn my bread and butter.”

H

"There was this prevalent belief about Dabangg that it was a gritty realistic offbeat kind of film. We didn't want that kind of branding for Dabangg. We wanted this to be a full-on action film, bigger than Wanted. In fact, bigger in terms of action than anything Salman has done before." The five action sequences, the film's highlight were shot over a period of 60 days. And though Arbaaz isn't willing to reveal it, the climactic fight alone is 20 minutes long. "Let's just say we shot the action scenes for 60 days which is the time spent shooting an average full-length feature film. These action films are done with special effects the way Jackie Chan's stunts are shot." Apparently, Salman is now all set to direct his own film.

Chitrangda

She may be in the race, but she’s a long way to the top and certainly not in the league of a Kareena Kapoor. Point this out and she has no qualms in admitting it either. “I definitely can’t do a Kareena Kapoor, but I really look up to the kind of roles that Vidya Balan’s done recently. I really wish I could do a film like Ishqiya.” Realistic roles are her criteria too — though this may be more due to options than choice — but she doesn’t hesitate to express her desire to do a full on entertainer and even a dance number. “I think my image of Hazaaron keeps filmmakers from approaching me to do any masala roles. But I love dancing, and I really wish I could do a dance number.” Balancing her personal life with professional commitments, she’s been shuttling in and out of the city. “I have a house here, but for me Delhi’s still home,” she says referring to her family there with hubby, golfer Jyoti Randhawa and son Zoravar. Exasperated with reports of her marital troubles with Jyoti over her decision to act — that had kept her in news inspite of her absence in Bollywood — she puts up her hands. “I do not know why he’s being made the scapegoat here, when all decisions have always been mine completely. It’s unfair to paint Jyoti as a villain. He’s just happy that I’ve found my calling at last.” July, 2010

Cross Bay Chemist Opened in Ozone Park

by Frank Pantina

Here we go again. Cross Bay Chemist pharmacy is branchingopening its second location on June 5 this time in Ozone Park. Six years ago, I opened Cross Bay Chemist in Howard Beach. Our pharmacy has become successful thanks to our hard work, perseverance and friendly atmosphere, but most importantly, our loyal customers, who have become friends. Despite competition from chain drug stores, we have managed to strive and grow. We thank you and want you to remember that you should be proud that a small mom and pop pharmacy has flourished. We represent you — our clients and friends. Cross Bay Chemist has happened because of our determination and devotion to you. We pride ourselves on customer relation¬ships and impeccable customer service. We treat our clients the way we want to be treated — with respect and kindness. Many ask, how do we compete with the chain drug stores? The chains have every- Frank Pantina, a registered p thing, plus parking. Bay Chemist in Howard Beach, True, but they don't have us. We treat our customers like they are part of the fam¬ily. When you come into an establishment and the staff knows your name and what you need and like, that works for me and I know it works for you, too. And don't forget about our great prices, sales & delivery service, which is free of charge. Now that we're opening a second location, I am so excited to be part of the Ozone Park community.

I feel that Ozone Park deserves its own neighborhood friendly pharmacy. The area is surrounded by mostly chain drug stores. It's time to create that neighborhood camaraderie that comes with having your own family pharmacy. I want people in Ozone Park to be able to say what those in Howard Beach have been saying for years — that Cross Bay Chemist is "my pharmacy." This is where I go to shop and fill my prescriptions. Frank and Carol are "our pharmacists" and we are proud to have "our local pharmacy." Cross Bay Chemist of Ozone Park is in it for the long haul. For us, it's not a sprint but a marathon. We are here to provide exceptional service to everyone, regardless of a patient's culture, heritage, race or religion. Whatever their insurance

plan may be, we are here to help them and this community. Please allow Cross Bay Chemist in How¬ard Beach and Ozone Park to be your pharmacies. Help us make our Ozone Park loca¬tion successful. Allow us to help you with all your pharmacy needs. Support your neigh¬borhood pharmacy and let's show those chains that we still believe in the small, local com¬munity pharmacies. Cross Bay Chemist's Ozone Park location is located at 96-05 101st Ave. Pharmacy hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. We are closed on Sun¬day. Phone: (718) 880-1644. Fax: (718) 880-1606. Web-site: crossbaychemist.com. Frank Pantina is a registered pharmacist and owner of both Cross Bay Chemist locations.

BOLLYWOOD

No junk food for Priyanka!

alking of Bollywood’s pintucked divas and their shapely figures, here’s an actress who has managed to stick to her dimensions, despite pigging out on junk food. Priyanka Chopra calls herself a foodie and for good reason because she rarely resists good food. Calories be damned! Even Priyanka’s illness and hospitalisation couldn’t dampen her spirits. “I don’t have the tendency to put on weight at this age. I do not diet. I love eating. I eat anything at any time. I never compromise when it comes to eating but I make sure I include a lot of greens in my diet,” Priyanka had said a few years ago. Fair enough. Human metabolism may have undergone evolutionary changes in Priyanka’s case. But now the actress has to be careful. The latest is that nutritionists and Priyanka’s fitness instructor have strictly told her to stay off a lot of her favourite dishes (referring to food for now), to maintain her stamina. A friend of Priyanka’s said, “Priyanka has been asked to go slow on pakodas, pastas, pizzas, pastries, burgers, chocolates and aerated drinks. She has a very gruelling shoot for Fear Factor coming up in the next few weeks. For this show, Priyanka will have to perform stunts, which would demand a lot of energy. She is quite a perfectionist in all her work assignments and doesn’t want to be under prepared.” Priyanka’s transformed food habits have not irked her father. When asked, Dr Ashok Chopra said, “This would in turn shed all the extra weight, if any and would tone up her body and improve her strength.” As for resisting temptation, Priyanka’s father added, “Priyanka is not finding it difficult to resist the temptation. She knows how to say ‘No’. And the results are showing. With each passing day, she is able to walk more on the treadmill.”

T Sonam vows Yash Chopra!

Y

ash Chopra, who has seen Sonam Kapoor since she was knee high, has always liked the girl. When he saw Saawariya he actually called her father Anil Kapoor to say that Sonam is a bright talent and will go places in her career. Post Delhi-6 Yash once again picked up the phone on Sonam and told her that she was indeed a delight to watch. Now that Sonam’s latest film has vowed the box office, the filmmaker is convinced that the 24-year-old star daughter is poised for superstardom. Chances are that one of these days Yash will announce a film under his own banner with young Sonam. What’s that saying about ‘nurture them young and watch them grow.’

Rekha’s vulnerable side

B

ollywood’s Greta Garbo Rekha does have a very vulnerable side to her. Nice to know that even if she makes rare appearances, Rekha does step out for the right reasons.

onali Kulkarni is on cloud nine. The actress, who recently got married in the city is looking forward to getting back to work. “I already have two projects that I am working on currently. One is Rockshock with Lucky Ali and the second is a Marathi film titled Pratibimbh with Ankush Choudhary.” Her new phase in life has got Sonali kulkarni redefining her priorities. “Earlier, I used to always work in accordance with producers and directors. I would never give time to myself, and I would keep their goals and deadlines in mind. Now, my perspective towards work has

changed, and I am going to make sure that I give time to myself and my family.” A typical Puneri mulgi, Sonali, also shares with us her memories of Pune during the monsoon season. “I used to love to take my bike out and drive in the rain without a raincoat. Earlier, it would

always rain on June 7, and my friends and I would take our bikes and drive all the way to Sinhagad to enjoy some chai and pakodas.I would love to enjoy visiting Pune during the monsoons again.” Well, here’s hoping to see you back in town again really soon, Sonali!
