Decatur Presbyterian Church, p.c.a. a Community of Grace For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 2 Corinthians 4:5
The Worship of Father, Son & Holy Spirit October 9, 2011 The Lord’s Day Welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus! If you are a guest with us, please be sure to sign our Registry when it is passed before the service. Children are welcome in our worship. We have a nursery available for children 3 and under. Children 4 to 6 years of age may be dismissed to Godly Play prior to the sermon. Thank you for joining us today and may the Lord richly bless you.
Song of Assembly1 Sing to the King
Sing to the King Who is coming to reign; glory to Jesus, the Lamb that was slain Life and salvation His empire shall bring and joy to the nations when Jesus is King. Come, let us sing a song, a song declaring we belong to Jesus, He is all we need Lift up a heart of praise, sing now with voices raised to Jesus, sing to the King. For His returning we watch and we pray, we will be ready the dawn of that day We’ll join in singing with all the redeemed ’cause Satan is vanquished and Jesus is King!
Welcome and Preparation for Worship I. God has appointed a day, wherein He will judge the world, in righteousness, by Jesus Christ, to whom all power and judgment is given of the Father. In which day, not only the apostate angels shall be judged, but likewise all persons that have lived upon earth shall appear before the tribunal of Christ, to give an account of their thoughts, words, and deeds; and to receive according to what they have done in the body, whether good or evil. II. The end of God’s appointing this day is for the manifestation of the glory of His mercy, in the eternal salvation of the elect; and of His justice, in the damnation of the reprobate, who are wicked and disobedient. For then shall the righteous go into everlasting life, and receive that fullness of joy and refreshing, which shall come from the presence of the Lord; but the wicked who know not God, and obey not the Gospel of Jesus Christ, shall be cast into eternal torments, and be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power. III. As Christ would have us to be certainly persuaded that there shall be a day of judgment, both to deter all men from sin; and for the greater consolation of the godly in their adversity: so will He have that day unknown to men, that they may shake off all carnal security, and be always watchful, because they know not at what hour the Lord will come; and may be ever prepared to say, Come Lord Jesus, come quickly, Amen. ~ Westminster Confession of Faith, chapter 33, “Of the Last Judgment”
All songs used by permission or covered under CCLI license # 391165.
The Lord Gives Us His Presence Responsive Call to Worship2
Pastor: The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork! People: Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge! Pastor: There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. People: Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. Pastor: In them he has set a tent for the sun, People: Which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy! Pastor: Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, All: And there is nothing hidden from its heat!
Prayer of Adoration & Praise Hymn of Praise Rejoice, the Lord is King
Rejoice, the Lord is King: your Lord and King adore! Rejoice, give thanks, and sing, and triumph evermore. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice! Rejoice, again I say, rejoice! Jesus the Savior reigns, the God of truth and love; When He had purged our stains, He took His seat above. His kingdom cannot fail, he rules o’er earth and heav’n; The keys of death and hell are to our Jesus giv’n. Rejoice in glorious hope! Our Lord, the Judge, shall come, And take His servants up to their eternal home.
We Confess our Faith in God’s Word
Pastor: The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; People: The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; Pastor: The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; People: The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; Pastor: The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; People: The rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. Pastor: More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; 2
We believe that God always initiates with sinners, so we begin worship with his invitation and command to us to gather in His name.
People: Sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Pastor: Moreover, by them is your servant warned; People: In keeping them there is great reward.
The Lord Gives Us His Grace The Next Thought of the Psalmist
Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.
We Confess our Sins Most holy and merciful Father, we acknowledge and confess before You our sinful nature, prone to evil and slow to do good, and all our shortcomings and offenses. You alone know how often we have sinned: In wandering from Your ways; In wasting Your gifts; In forgetting Your love. O Lord, have mercy upon us! We are ashamed and sorry for all our sins against You. Teach us to hate our errors; cleanse us from our secret faults; and forgive our sins for the sake of Your dear Son. And O most holy and loving Father; help us to live in Your light and walk in Your ways, according to the commandments of Jesus Christ our Lord... Silent & Personalized Confession of Sin... Amen!
The Good News of Salvation
2 Corinthians 5:21
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Worship with Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs You Are God Alone You are not a god, created by human hands You are not a god, dependent on any mortal man You are not a god, in need of anything we can give By Your plan, that’s just the way it is You are God alone, from before time began You were on Your throne, You are God alone And right now, in the good times and bad You are on Your throne, You are God alone You’re the only God, whose power none can contend You’re the only God, whose name and praise will never end You’re the only God, who’s worthy of everything we can give You are God, and that’s just the way it is Unchangeable, unshakable, unstoppable That’s what You are
Our Great God
Eternal God unchanging, mysterious and unknown, Your boundless love unfailing in grace and mercy shown. Bright seraphim in endless flight around Your glorious throne; They raise their voices day and night in praise to You alone. Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God! Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God! Lord, we are weak and frail, helpless in the storm. Surround us with Your angels, hold us in Your arms. Our cold and ruthless enemy, his pleasure is our harm. Rise up, O Lord, and he will flee before our sov'reign God. Let every creature in the sea and every flying bird; Let every mountain, every field and valley of the earth; Let all the moons and all the stars in all the universe Sing praises to the living God who rules them by His word.
How can I say thanks for the things You have done for me? Things so undeserved, yet You gave to prove Your love for me; The voices of a million angels could not express my gratitude. All that I am and ever hope to be, I owe it all to Thee. To God be the glory, to God be the glory, To God be the glory for the things He has done. With His blood He has saved me, with His power He has raised me; To God be the glory for the things He has done. Just let me live my life, let it be pleasing, Lord to Thee, And if I gain any praise, let it go to Calvary.
Prayers of Thanksgiving & Petition
Elder Kent Quinn
…Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

The Lord Gives Us His Word Sermon3
Pastor Tommy Lee Series: “Come to me… and I will give you rest.” (Matt. 11:28) XCVI. Parousia Matthew 24:36-51
We Respond Lo! He Comes
Every eye shall now behold Him, robed in dreadful majesty. Those who set at naught and sold Him, pierced and nailed Him to the tree. Deeply wailing, deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see. Lo! He comes with clouds descending, once for our salvation slain. Thousand, thousand saints attending, swell the triumph of His train. Alleluia! Alleluia! God appears on earth to reign. Now redemption long expected, see in solemn pomp appear! All his saints by man rejected, now shall meet Him in the air. Alleluia! Alleluia! See the day of God appear. Yea amen let all adore Thee, high on thine eternal throne. Savior take the power and glory, claim the kingdom for thine own. O come quickly, O come quickly, alleluia, come Lord, come!
The Lord Gives Us His Sacrament The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper Communion, also called The Lord’s Supper or Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all committed followers of Jesus Christ to share in this sacrament: those who are baptized members of a congregation that proclaims the gospel, who are at peace with God and their neighbor, and who seek strength to live in a deeper communion with Jesus. If you are not a Christian, or you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the Church.
4, 5, & 6 year-old children may be dismissed before the sermon to Godly Play in room 173.
Search Me, Know Me
Search me, know me, try me and see Every worthless affection hidden in me. All I’m asking for Is that You’d cleanse me, Lord. Create in me a heart that’s clean, Conquer the power of secret shame, Come wash away the guilty stain Of all my sin. Clothe me in robes of righteousness, Cover my nakedness with grace All of my life before You now I humbly bring.
The Lord Gives Us His Blessing Benediction4
Colossians 3:4; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory... For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.
Blessed be the Lord God Almighty
Blessed be the Lord God Almighty, Who was, and is, and is to come. Blessed be the Lord God Almighty, Who reigns forevermore.
Just as God called us into His presence at the beginning, so now He commands His blessing upon us as we depart. We look up and extend our hands in a posture of thanksgiving as we receive this great gift. Our final response to God’s assurance of His peace and presence upon those who are in Christ is a chorus of joyful song. 4

Adult Christian Education Classes 9:30AM “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction” A study of Eugene Peterson’s book looking at the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134). These are the particular songs that the Hebrew pilgrims would sing on their way up to worship in Jerusalem, and they have much to teach us about worship, service, joy, work, happiness, humility, community and blessing. Room 158a, (right off the sanctuary).
“The Righteous Shall Live By Faith” A study of R. C. Sproul’s book looking at the book of Romans. The book of Romans has been called “Paul’s fullest, grandest, most comprehensive statement of the gospel,” and it’s just as vital for the church today as on the day it was written. Room 167a, (down the hall from the church office).
Sedona Class for Young Adults The Young Adult Class is studying the book of John, using an excellent study guide (very understandable and applicable) by Frank Barker. The book of John was “written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). Room 168a — the “waterfall room,” off the back hallway, which can be accessed from the hallway across from the church office.
