Prayer of Adoration & Praise
The Worship of God October 31, 2010 Reformation Sunday
Hymn of Praise A Mighty Fortress is Our God4
Welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus! If you are a guest with us, please be sure to sign our Registry when it is passed during the service. Children are welcome in our worship. We have a nursery available for children 3 and under. Children 4 to 6 years of age may be dismissed to Godly Play prior to the sermon. Thank you for joining us today and may the Lord richly bless you.
Father, Long Before Creation Father, long before creation, Thou had’st chosen us in love, And that love so deep, so moving, draws us close to Christ above. Still it keeps us, still it keeps us, firmly fixed in Christ alone.
God’s compassion is my story, is my boasting all the day; Mercy free and never failing, moves my will, directs my way. God so loved us, God so loved us, that His only Son He gave.

The LORD Calls Us into His Presence Call to Worship2
Bless God in the great congregation, the Lord, O you who are of Israel's fountain! O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; sing praises to the Lord, to him who rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens; behold, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice! Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over Israel, and whose power is in the skies! Awesome is God from his sanctuary; the God of Israel—he is the one who gives power and strength to his people. Blessed be God!
Corporate Confession of Sin6 Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all mankind, we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed. We have sinned against your Divine Majesty, justly provoking your wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent and are heartily sorry for these our transgressions. The remembrance of them is grievous to us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Silent & Personalized Confession of Sin ... Amen.
God Assures Us of His Forgiveness7
The Nicene Creed5
We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his father before all worlds, God of God, Light Of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.
Pastor: “...you shall call his name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21) “This is a faithful saying, that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” (1 Timothy 1:15) Let everyone, therefore, with Saint Matthew and Saint Paul, truly acknowledge this in his or her heart and believe in Jesus Christ. Thus, in his name, I proclaim to you the forgiveness of sins, and declare, according to the Scriptures that if you have truly trusted in him that your sins will not only be forgiven on earth, but also in heaven throughout eternity.
Worship with Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs Holy Is the Lord God Almighty
Holy is the Lord God Almighty, the earth is filled with His glory! Holy is the Lord God Almighty, the earth is filled with His glory! The earth is filled with His glory!
The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord: She is his new creation by water and the Word; From heav’n he came and sought her to be his holy bride; With his own blood he bought her and for her life he died.
It is rising up all around, It’s the anthem of the Lord’s renown. It’s rising up all around, It’s the anthem of the Lord’s renown.
All songs used by permission or covered under CCLI license # 391165. We believe that God always initiates with sinners, so we begin worship with his invitation and command to us to gather in His name. 3 Psalm 68 was named “The Battle Hymn of the Reformation.” It was one of the favorite Psalms for 16th-century Reformed churches to sing. In fact, it became so identified with the Reformed cause in Catholic France that even the whistling of the tune was outlawed as a felony.
We stand and lift up our hands, For the joy of the Lord is our strength. We bow down and worship Him now, How great, how awesome is He. And together we sing,
And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets; and we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church; we acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
The Church’s One Foundation
Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.
That Word above all earthly pow’rs, no thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still; His kingdom is forever.
Loving Father now before Thee, we will ever praise Thy love, And our songs will sound unceasing, ’til we reach our home above, Giving glory, giving glory, to our God and to the Lamb Giving glory, giving glory, to our God and to the Lamb.
By grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. - Ephesians 2:8
Call to Confession
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him; His rage we can endure; for lo! his doom is sure; One little word shall fell him.
Though the world may change its fashion, yet our God is e’er the same; His compassion and His covenant, through all ages will remain. God’s own children, God’s own children, must forever praise His name.
So when the devil throws your sins in your face and declares that you deserve death and hell, tell him this: “I admit that I deserve death and hell, what of it? For I know One who suffered and made satisfaction on my behalf. His name is Jesus Christ, Son of God, and where He is there I shall be also!” - Martin Luther
Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won; O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, Like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee.
The LORD Forgives Us in Christ
Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing. Were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He, Lord Sabaoth His name, from age to age the same, And He must win the battle.
Welcome and Preparation for Worship
A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and pow’r are great; and armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal.
Song of Assembly1
Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth. Her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, with ev’ry grace endued.
The best known hymn by Martin Luther, the “Father of the Reformation.” It’s become so beloved by the church, it’s now even a suggested hymn for Roman Catholic masses. 5 The Nicene Creed originated at the Council of Nicea (325), and an expanded form was adopted by the Council of Chalcedon (451). It was formulated to answer heresies that denied the biblical doctrine of the Trinity and of the person of Christ.
This corporate confession of sin was written by the English Reformer, Thomas Cranmer. This assurance of forgiveness was written by the reformer Martin Bucer, in Strasbourg.
The Gospel Is True
We have a hope that is living and love that never will end. We have a God who’s forgiven us while we were yet in sin. We have a grace that’s amazing; a free gift to know Him by faith, To live for His praise and long for the day, when we see Him face to face.
T’was grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believed!
Thank you, Jesus, Oh how we worship You. Thank You, Jesus. Hallelujah, the gospel is true. Hallelujah, the gospel is true. We have been crucified with Him, buried and risen to life. Now justified, soon glorified, we shall be made like Christ.
Prayers of Thanksgiving & Petition
My chains are gone, I’ve been set free. My God, my Savior has ransomed me, And like a flood His mercy reigns; Unending love, amazing grace.
Elder Blake Temple
The Lord has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures.

The LORD Communes with Us at His Table
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see.
The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
We Are the Body of Christ
The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper You are welcome to participate in the Lord’s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during the time of the Lord’s Supper:
One heart, one Spirit, one voice to praise You, We are the body of Christ. One goal, one vision, to see You exalted, We are the body of Christ. And to this we give our lives To see You glorified.
Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.
One heart, one Spirit, one voice to praise You, We are the body of Christ. We are the body of Christ.
Just as God called us into His presence at the beginning, so now He commands His blessing upon us as we depart. We look up and extend our hands in a posture of thanksgiving as we receive this great gift. Our final response to God’s assurance of His peace and presence upon those who are in Christ is a chorus of joyful song.
The Lord sets his people apart and sanctifies them and calls them to his grace and service through his Word. 9 4, 5, & 6 year-old children may be dismissed before the sermon to Godly Play in room 173.
