The Worship of God

Hymn of Praise

May 9, 2010 Welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus! If you are a guest with us, please be sure to sign our Registry when it is passed during the service. Children are welcome in our worship. We have a nursery available for children 3 and under. Children 4 to 6 years of age may be dismissed to Godly Play prior to the sermon. Thank you for joining us today and may the Lord richly bless you.

Song of Assembly1 Lead On, O King Eternal

Lead on, O King eternal, the day of march has come; Henceforth in fields of conquest, thy tents shall be our home. Through days of preparation, thy grace has made us strong; And now, O King eternal, we lift our battle song. Lead on, O King eternal, till sin's fierce war shall cease, And holiness shall whisper, the sweet amen of peace. For not with swords loud clashing, nor roll of stirring drums; With deeds of love and mercy the heavenly kingdom comes.

Come, Thou Almighty King

Lead on, O King eternal, we follow, not with fears, for gladness breaks like morning where’er thy face appears. Thy cross is lifted o’er us, we journey in its light; The crown awaits the conquest; lead on, O God of might.

Welcome and Preparation for Worship Pharisee-type believers unconsciously think they have earned God’s blessing through their behavior. Guilt-laden believers are quite sure they have forfeited God’s blessing through their lack of discipline or their disobedience. Both have forgotten the meaning of grace because they have moved away from the gospel and have slipped into a performance relationship with God…Your worst days are never so bad that you are beyond the reach of God’s grace. And your best days are never so good that you are beyond the need of God’s grace. - Jerry Bridges

Psalm 149:1-4

Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise in the assembly of the godly! Let Israel be glad in his Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King! Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre! For the LORD takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation.

Prayer of Adoration & Praise

Come, Holy Comforter, Thy sacred witness bear, In this glad hour. Thou Who almighty art, now rule in every heart, And ne’er from us depart, Spirit of pow’r.

Confession of Faith

All songs used by permission or covered under CCLI license # 391165. We believe that God always initiates with sinners, so we begin worship with his invitation and command to us to gather in His name. 2

Corporate Confession of Sin Father, as we come before your throne and see your glory and majesty, we are tempted to despair as we look upon the frailty, sin and weakness that fill our hearts. As we come before your throne and see your holiness and justice, we are eternally grateful that we do not stand alone, for on our own we would rightly face judgment and death. Help us daily to renew our trust in Jesus Christ who pleads for us. Help us daily to refresh ourselves with the blood of Christ that covers our sin and gives us the right to stand, not as slaves facing conviction, but as sons and daughters basking in your delight. Help us to see you, Father, rejoicing over us with singing: may this reality move us towards holiness in our lives as we joyfully offer ourselves to you as an act of thanksgiving for your amazing grace toward us. We pray this in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Come Thou Incarnate Word, Gird on Thy mighty sword, Our prayer attend. Come, and Thy people bless, and give Thy Word success; Spirit of holiness, on us descend.

Assurance of Pardon in Christ

1 John 4:9-10

In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Worship with Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus

O the deep, deep love of Jesus! Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free; Rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me. Underneath me, all around me, is the current of Thy love; Leading onward, leading homeward, to Thy glorious rest above.

from Ephesians 2:18-22

Through Him we have access in one Spirit to the Father. We are no longer strangers and aliens, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone. In Christ, the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him we also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

The Church’s One Foundation

The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord: She is his new creation by water and the Word; From heav’n he came and sought her to be his holy bride; With his own blood he bought her and for her life he died. Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth. Her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, with ev’ry grace endued. Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won; O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, Like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee.

Call to Confession of Sin

Come, Thou Almighty King, Help us Thy Name to sing, Help us to praise. Father, all glorious, o’er all victorious, Come and reign over us, Ancient of Days.

To the great One in Three, Eternal praises be, Hence ever more. His sovereign majesty, may we in glory see, And to eternity, love and adore.

So lead on, O King, Lead on, O King, Lead on, O King, Lead on.

Call to Worship2

Psalm 15:1-3

O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill? He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart; who does not slander with his tongue and does no evil to his neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his friend.

O the deep, deep love of Jesus! Spread His praise from shore to shore; How He loveth, ever loveth, changeth never, nevermore; How He watches o'er His loved ones, died to call them all His own; How for them He intercedeth, watcheth o'er them from the throne. O the deep, deep love of Jesus! Love of every love the best: ’Tis an ocean vast of blessing, ’tis a haven sweet of rest. O the deep, deep love of Jesus! ’Tis a heav'n of heav’ns to me; And it lifts me up to glory, for it lifts me up to Thee.

Be Unto Your Name We are a moment, You are forever, Lord of the Ages, God before time; We are a vapor, You are eternal, Love everlasting, reigning on high. Holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Worthy is the Lamb Who was slain; Highest praises, honor and glory Be unto Your Name, be unto Your Name. We are the broken, You are the healer, Jesus, Redeemer, mighty to save; You are the love song we’ll sing forever, Bowing before You, blessing Your Name.

Around the table of the King. The body of our Savior, Jesus Christ, Torn for you: eat and remember The wounds that heal, the death that brings us life, Paid the price to make us one. So we share in this Bread of Life, And we drink of His sacrifice, As a sign of our bonds of love Around the table of the King.

From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea, Creation’s revealing your majesty. From the colors of fall to the fragrance of spring, Every creature unique in the song that it sings; All exclaiming, Indescribable, uncontainable, You placed the stars in the sky and you know them by name. You are amazing God! All powerful, untamable, Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim, You are amazing God!

The blood that cleanses every stain of sin, Shed for you: drink and remember He drained death’s cup that all may enter in To receive the life of God. So we share in this Bread of Life, And we drink of His sacrifice, As a sign of our bonds of grace Around the table of the King.

Who has told every lightning bolt where it should go? Or seen Heavenly storehouses laden with snow? Who imagined the sun and gives source to its light, Yet conceals it to bring us the coolness of night? None can fathom,

And so with thankfulness and faith we rise To respond: and to remember. Our call to follow in the steps of Christ As His body here on earth. As we share in His suffering, We proclaim: Christ will come again! And we’ll join in the feast of heaven Around the table of the King.

Indescribable, uncontainable, You placed the stars in the sky and you know them by name. You are amazing God! Incomparable, unchangeable, You know the depths of my heart and you love me the same. You are amazing God! You are amazing God!

Prayers of Thanksgiving & Petition Benediction4

Offering Sermon3

Pastor Steve Coward Series: “Come to me… and I will give you rest.” (Matt. 11:28)

Old 100th

Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

LII. Hidden in Plain Sight Matthew 16:1-12 The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper A Word About Communion - The bread and juice you see on the Communion table may not look like much to the casual observer. In fact, it is merely bread and juice. What makes this meal special is that the Lord Jesus Christ is spiritually present in a unique way. This sacrament is not something to be taken lightly but neither is it a time to be somber; rather, we should be filled with thankfulness and joy. Our Savior, out of His great mercy, bids His people to come to this meal. If you are a member of a church who embraces the Gospel of Jesus Christ and are at peace with your fellow Christians, we welcome you to this table. Come and consider with us our Lord’s body and shed blood symbolized in the bread and juice. Rejoice with us in our union with Him and with each other as His Covenant people.

Behold The Lamb

Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away, Slain for us: and we remember The promise made that all who come in faith Find forgiveness at the cross. So we share in this Bread of Life, And we drink of His sacrifice, As a sign of our bonds of peace 3

4, 5, & 6 year-old children may be dismissed before the sermon to Godly Play in room 173.

Just as God called us into His presence at the beginning, so now He commands His blessing upon us as we depart. We look up and extend our hands in a posture of thanksgiving as we receive this great gift. Our final response to God’s assurance of His peace and presence upon those who are in Christ is a chorus of joyful song.
