The Worship of God August 30, 2009 Welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus! If you are a guest with us, please be sure to sign our Registry when it is passed during the service. Children are welcome in our worship. We have a nursery available for children 3 and under. Children 4 to 6 years of age will be dismissed to Godly Play prior to the sermon. Thank you for joining us today and may the Lord richly bless you.
Welcome and Preparation for Worship But, God has appointed the church’s worship on the Sabbath day, as the primary means by which He keeps alive in our minds the knowledge of the truth. In the Scripture, which is read, in good hymns that are sung, in the preaching and the praying, the truth is renewed in our minds. Here, in the Lord’s house, we remember creation and redemption; here we hear again the promises of God, one and all; here, in a well-ordered service of worship, the gospel is recapitulated week after week; we think it all through again. Here the Word is preached and our understanding renewed. Here we think more Christian thoughts than we do at other times; our minds are refitted, refilled, restored. - Dr. R.S. Rayburn
Call to Worship1
Psalm 97:1-2, 12
The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad! Clouds and thick darkness are all around Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous, and give thanks to His holy name!
Hymn of Praise2 O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing
O for a thousand tongues to sing, My great Redeemer’s praise, The glories of my God and King, The triumphs of His grace. My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim, To spread thro’all the earth abroad, The honors of Thy name. Jesus! the Name that charms our fears, That bids our sorrows cease, ’Tis music in the sinner’s ears, ’Tis life and health and peace.
Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb, Your loosened tongues employ; Ye blind, behold your Savior come; And leap, ye lame, for joy.
Confession of Faith
He speaks and listening to His voice, New life the dead receive; The mournful, broken hearts rejoice; The humble poor believe.
from Ephesians 2:18-22
Arise, My Soul Arise
We believe that God always initiates with sinners, so we begin worship with his invitation and command to us to gather in His name. 2 All songs used by permission or covered under CCLI license # 391165.
Worship with Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs Everlasting God
Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord We will wait upon the Lord We will wait upon the Lord Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord We will wait upon the Lord We will wait upon the Lord
Arise, my soul arise, shake off your guilty fears, The bleeding sacrifice in my behalf appears. Before the throne, my Surety stands, Before the throne, my Surety stands, My name is written on His hands.

Lord for Your Glory
Lord for your glory we sing Your praises. We magnify Your holy name. All for Your glory, Lord we bring blessing. We seek to honor You all of our days.
Five bleeding wounds He bears received on Calvary, They pour effectual prayers, they strongly plead for me, “Forgive him, oh forgive”, they cry, “Forgive him, oh forgive”, they cry, “Nor let that ransomed sinner die”.
We lift our hands, we lift our praise to You. We worship all You are in spirit and truth. We give our hearts, we give our lives to You We offer all we are for the glory of You.
My God is reconciled, His pardoning voice I hear, He owns me for His child, I can no longer fear, With confidence I now draw nigh, With confidence I now draw nigh, And “Father, Abba, Father” cry.
Almighty Father, we are Your children. You have been faithful to Your own. Lord, for Your glory we have been chosen. We lay down all we have here at Your throne! We lift our hands, we lift our praise to You. We worship all You are in spirit and truth. We give our hearts, we give our lives to You. We offer all we are, we offer all we have, We offer all our lives for the glory of You. For the glory of You!
For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.
Corporate Confession of Sin
“Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.
Through Him we have access in one Spirit to the Father. We are no longer strangers and aliens, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone. In Christ, the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In Him we also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
Call to Confession of Sin He breaks the power of reigning sin, He sets the prisoner free; His blood can make the foulest clean, His blood availed for me.
Assurance of Pardon in Christ
Adapted from Valley of Vision
O Lord, I have a wild heart, and cannot stand before You. I am like a bird before a man. How little I love Your truth and Your ways. I neglect prayer by thinking I have prayed enough. I sin more safely because Your grace abounds, and I do not hate my lusts. I am an evangelical hypocrite, who loves the form of religion without living out its power. My mind is a bucket without a bottom, with no spiritual understanding, ever learning but never reaching the truth, always at the gospel well but never holding water. I confess my sin, trusting in Your promise to cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Give me a broken heart that yet carries home the water of Your redeeming grace. Amen.

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth
The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper A Word About Communion - The bread and juice you see on the Communion table may not look like much to the casual observer. In fact, it is merely bread and juice. What makes this meal special is that the Lord Jesus Christ is spiritually present in a unique way. This sacrament is not something to be taken lightly but neither is it a time to be somber; rather, we should be filled with thankfulness and joy. Our Savior, out of His great mercy, bids His people to come to this meal. If you are a member of a church who embraces the Gospel of Jesus Christ and are at peace with your fellow Christians, we welcome you to this table. Come and consider with us our Lord’s body and shed blood symbolized in the bread and juice. Rejoice with us in our union with Him and with each other as His Covenant people. For those not taking Communion today, we encourage you to carefully think on the prayers found in the section entitled: “Prayers for Those Not Communing”, and we look forward to the day when you may join us in this meal.

4, 5, & 6 year-old children may be dismissed before the sermon to Godly Play in room 173. Just as God has the first word in worship, he also has the last word. For those who are in Christ Jesus, these are always words of blessing. We look up and extend our hands out in a posture of receiving the blessing of God.
Prayers of Meditation for Those Not Communing
Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.
Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I owed. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Him as Savior. Amen.
Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.
Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.
