The Worship of God
The Nicene Creed3
Confession of Faith
July 26, 2009 Welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus! If you are a guest with us, please be sure to sign our Registry when it is passed during the service. Children are welcome in our worship. We have a nursery available for children 3 and under. Children not yet in kindergarten will be dismissed prior to the sermon. Thank you for joining us today and may the Lord richly bless you.
Welcome and Preparation for Worship Ungrudgingly He took our nature upon Himself to impart to us what was His, and to become both Son of God and Son of man in common with us. Hence that holy brotherhood which He commends with His own lips when He says: ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God’ (John 20:17). In this way we are assured of the inheritance of the Heavenly Kingdom; for the only Son of God, to whom it wholly belongs, has adopted us as His brothers. – John Calvin, The Institutes of the Christian Religion
We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; Who spoke by the prophets; and we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Blessed Be The Name of The Lord
Call to Worship1
1 Peter 2:9
Blessed Be Your name, When I’m found in the desert place Though I walk through the wilderness, Blessed Be Your name
Hymn of Praise2 All Hail The Power Of Jesus’ Name!
Every blessing You pour out, I’ll turn back to praise When the darkness closes in, Lord; Still I will say
All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ name! Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown Him Lord of all; Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown Him Lord of all.
Blessed be the name of the Lord, Blessed be Your name Blessed be the name of the Lord, Blessed be Your glorious name Blessed be Your name, When the sun’s shining down on me When the world’s ‘all as it should be,’ Blessed be Your name
Crown Him, ye martyrs of your God, who from His altar call; Extol the Stem of Jesse’s rod, and crown Him Lord of all; Extol the Stem of Jesse’s rod, and crown Him Lord of all.
Blessed be Your name, On the road marked with suffering Though there’s pain in the offering, Blessed be Your name
Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race, ye ransomed of the fall, Hail Him who saves you by His grace, and crown Him Lord of all; Hail Him who saves you by His grace, and crown Him Lord of all.
Blessed be the name of the Lord, Blessed be Your name Blessed be the name of the Lord, Blessed be Your glorious name Blessed be the name of the Lord, Blessed be Your name Blessed be the name of the Lord, Blessed be Your glorious name
Let ev’ry kindred, ev’ry tribe, on this terrestrial ball, To Him all majesty ascribe, and crown Him Lord of all; To Him all majesty ascribe, and crown Him Lord of all. O that with yonder sacred throng we at His feet may fall; We’ll join the everlasting song, and crown Him Lord of all; We’ll join the everlasting song, and crown Him Lord of all.
You give and take away, You give and take away My heart will choose to say; Lord, blessed be Your name
Call to Confession of Sin
“Seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that He may have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.” 1
We believe that God always initiates with sinners, so we begin worship with his invitation and command to us to gather in his name.
All songs used by permission or covered under CCLI license # 391165.
Assurance of Pardon in Christ
The LORD redeems His servants; no one will be condemned who takes refuge in Him.
We will drink from Your fountain We will sing to our Lord We rejoice in Your goodness Almighty King We will trust in You always We will live in Your Light We rejoice in Your goodness Almighty King Sing Praise, sing praise To the Almighty King to the Almighty King (x2) I will drink from Your fountain I will sing to my Lord I’ll rejoice in Your goodness Almighty King I will trust in You always I will live in Your Light I’ll rejoice in Your goodness Almighty King
Every blessing You pour out, I’ll turn back to praise When the darkness closes in, Lord; Still I will say
Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget the wormwood and the gall, Go, spread your trophies at His feet, and crown Him Lord of all; Go, spread your trophies at His feet, and crown Him Lord of all.
Our Father in Heaven, because of Your great mercy You have forgiven our sins and rescued us from the power of sin. You have changed our hearts and renewed our wills so that we might live as Your people. Yet we have disobeyed Your law and we have not reflected Your character in the world. Instead of desiring fellowship with You, our hearts have been obsessed with the pleasures of this life. Rather than seeking Your favor, we have sought the approval of others. Rather than serving others, we have served ourselves. O Lord, we have sinned against You and are truly sorry. Deepen within us our sorrow for the wrong we have done, and for the good we have left undone. Teach us to hate and forsake our sins and guide us in the paths of righteousness for Your name’s sake. Amen.
Worship with Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs
Blessed Be Your Name, In the land that is plentiful Where Your streams of abundance flow, Blessed be Your name
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Corporate Confession of Sin
The Nicene Creed was written in the 4th century A.D. Its central doctrines are those of the Person of Jesus Christ and the reality of the Holy Spirit. It is the only creed accepted by all three branches of Christendom (Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox). The word “catholic” means universal.
Grace Like Rain Amazing grace! How sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me! And I once was lost, but now I’m found, Was blind, but now I see so clearly. Hallelujah! Grace like rain falls down on me. Hallelujah! And all my stains are washed away, They’re washed away. ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing Your praise Than when we first begun.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow, In Heaven above and earth below. Praise God the Father and the son, Praise God the Spirit, three-in-one.
Prayers of Meditation for Those Not Communing Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.
From all that dwell beneath the skies, Let the Creator’s praise arise. Let our Redeemer’s name be sung, Through every land, by every tongue. Eternal are Your mercies Lord, Eternal truth attends Your Word. Your praise will sound from shore to shore, Till suns shall rise and set no more.
Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I owed. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Him as Savior. Amen.
In every land, by every tongue, Let our Redeemer’s name be sung.

Prayer of Commitment
The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper A Word About Communion – The bread and juice you see on the Communion table may not look like much to the casual observer. In fact, it is merely bread and juice. What makes this meal special is that the Lord Jesus Christ is spiritually present in a unique way. This sacrament is not something to be taken lightly but neither is it a time to be somber; rather, we should be filled with thankfulness and joy. Our Savior, out of His great mercy, bids His people to come to this meal. If you are a member of a church who embraces the Gospel of Jesus Christ and are at peace with your fellow Christians, we welcome you to this table. Come and consider with us our Lord’s body and shed blood symbolized in the bread and juice. Rejoice with us in our union with Him and with each other as His Covenant people. For those not taking Communion today, we encourage you to carefully think on the prayers found in the section entitled: “Prayers for Those Not Communing”, and we look forward to the day when you may join us in this meal.
Spirit of the Living God
Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.
Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.
Spirit of the living God, be poured out upon me. Breathe life into my lifeless heart and I will live in You. Spirit of the living God, be poured out upon me. Write Your Law on my hardened heart and I will live in You. Take away my heart of stone and give me a heart of flesh Be my God and I will be Your child! Spirit of the living God, be poured out upon me. Reveal Christ to my needy heart and I will live in You. Spirit of the living God, be poured out upon me. Breathe life into my lifeless heart and I will live in You. 4
4, 5, & 6 year-old children may be dismissed before the sermon to Godly Play in room 173.
Just as God has the first word in worship, he also has the last word. For those who are in Christ Jesus, these are always words of blessing. We look up and extend our hands out in a posture of receiving the blessing of God.
