The Worship of God May 10, 2009

The Potter’s Hand

Welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus! If you are a guest with us, please be sure to sign our Registry when it is passed during the service. Children are welcome in our worship. We have a nursery available for children 3 and under. Children not yet in kindergarten will be dismissed prior to the sermon. Thank you for joining us today and may the Lord richly bless you.

Welcome and Preparation for Worship I have had a deep conviction for many years that practical holiness and entire selfconsecration to God are not sufficiently attended to by modern Christians in this country. Politics, or controversy, or party spirit, or worldliness, have eaten out the heart of lively piety in too many of us. The subject of personal godliness has fallen sadly into the background. The standard of living has become painfully low in many quarters. The immense importance of ‘adorning the doctrine of God our Saviour’ (Titus 2:10), and making it lovely and beautiful by our daily habits and tempers, has been far too much overlooked. Worldly people sometimes complain with reason that ‘religious’ persons, so-called, are not so amiable and unselfish and good-natured as others who make no profession of religion. Yet sanctification (growing like Christ), in its place and proportion, is quite as important as justification (being right with God). - J. C. Ryle (1879)

Call to Worship1

Psalm 135:1-4

Praise the LORD! Praise the name of the LORD, give praise, O servants of the LORD, who stand in the house of the LORD, in the courts of the house of our God! Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; sing to his name, for it is pleasant! For the LORD has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel as his own possession.

Hymn of Praise2 Come, Christians, Join to Sing

Come, Christians join to sing, Alleluia! Amen! Loud praise to Christ our King; Alleluia! Amen! Let all, with heart and voice, before His throne rejoice; Praise is His gracious choice, Alleluia! Amen! Come, lift your hearts on high, Alleluia! Amen! Let praises fill the sky; Alleluia! Amen! He is our Guide and Friend; to us He'll condescend; His love shall never end, Alleluia! Amen! Praise yet our Christ again, Alleluia! Amen! Life shall not end the strain; Alleluia! Amen! On heaven's blissful shore, His goodness we'll adore, Singing forevermore, “Alleluia! Amen!”

Confession of Faith

From Psalm 62

Leader: Christians, what do you believe? People: My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will never be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God: He is my mighty rock and my refuge. Leader: Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge. 1

We believe that God always initiates with sinners, so we begin worship with his invitation and command to us to gather in his name. 2 All songs used by permission or covered under CCLI license # 391165.

Beautiful Lord, Wonderful Saviour I know for sure, all of my days are held in your hands, Crafted into your perfect plan. You gently call me into your presence Guiding me by Your Holy Spirit Teach me, dear Lord, to live all of my life Through Your eyes. I'm captured by Your holy calling set me apart, I know you’re drawing me to yourself, Lead me Lord, I pray.

Early in the morning I will celebrate the light, When I stumble in the darkness, I will call your name by night.

Jeremiah 2:13

For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.

Corporate Confession of Sin Holy Lord, We have sinned against You times without number, and been guilty of pride and unbelief. We have failed to seek Your mind in Your Word and have neglected to see You in our daily lives. A fountain of pollution is deep within us and we are ashamed of who we are in ourselves. O Lord, we have no merit, let the merits of Jesus stand for us. Grant to us a deep repentance and horror of sin, and help us to flee from it. Subdue our corruptions and grant us grace to live above them. Give us true holiness in speech, thought and action. Lead us in paths of righteousness, for Your name’s sake. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon in Christ

Ephesians 1:7-8

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight.

Worship with Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs Father, Long Before Creation

Father, long before creation, Thou hadst chosen us in love, And that love so deep, so moving, draws us close to Christ above. Still it keeps us, still it keeps us, firmly fixed in Christ alone. Though the world may change its fashion, yet our God is e’er the same; His compassion and His covenant, through all ages will remain. God’s own children, God’s own children, must forever praise His name. God’s compassion is my story, is my boasting all the day; Mercy free and never failing, moves my will, directs my way. God so loved us, God so loved us, that His only Son He gave. Loving Father now before Thee, we will ever praise Thy love, And our songs will sound unceasing, ‘til we reach our home above, Giving glory, giving glory, to our God and to the Lamb Giving glory, giving glory, to our God and to the Lamb.

God of wonders beyond our galaxy, You are holy, holy. The universe declares Your Majesty. You are holy, holy. Lord of Heaven and earth, Lord of Heaven and earth.

Take me, mould me, use me, fill me. I give my life to the Potter’s hand. Call me, guide me, lead me, walk beside me. I give my life to the Potter’s hand.

Call to Confession of Sin

God of wonders beyond our galaxy, You are holy, holy. Precious Lord, reveal Your heart to me. Father, hold me, hold me. The universe declares Your Majesty. You are holy, holy, holy, holy!

How Great Is Our God The splendor of the King Clothed in majesty Let all the earth rejoice All the earth rejoice He wraps Himself in light And darkness tries to hide And trembles at His voice And trembles at His voice How great is our God Sing with me How great is our God And all will see how great How great is our God And age to age He stands And time is in His hands Beginning and the End Beginning and the End The Godhead three in one Father Spirit Son The Lion and the Lamb The Lion and the Lamb (BRIDGE) Name above all names Worthy of all praise My heart will sing How great is our God

Matthew 8:18-27

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth

Rev. Rob Bailey

Reception of New Members Gabriella Anna Ellis Alexandra Lynn Ellis

Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper A Word About Communion – The bread and juice you see on the Communion table may not look like much to the casual observer. In fact, it is merely bread and juice. What makes this meal special is that the Lord Jesus Christ is spiritually present in a unique way. This sacrament is not something to be taken lightly but neither is it a time to be somber; rather, we should be filled with thankfulness and joy. Our Savior, out of His great mercy, bids His people to come to this meal. If you are a member of a church who embraces the Gospel of Jesus Christ and are at peace with your fellow Christians, we welcome you to this table. Come and consider with us our Lord’s body and shed blood symbolized in the bread and juice. Rejoice with us in our union with Him and with each other as His Covenant people. For those not taking Communion today, we encourage you to carefully think on the prayers found in the section entitled: “Prayers for Those Not Communing”, and we look forward to the day when you may join us in this meal.

Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I owed. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Him as Savior. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer of Commitment Beautiful Scandalous Night Daugherty/Hindalong Go on up to the mountain of mercy To the crimson perpetual tide Kneel down on the shore Be thirsty no more Go under and be purified

Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

Follow Christ to the holy mountain Sinner sorry and wrecked by the fall Cleanse your heart and your soul In the fountain that flows For you and for me and for all At the wonderful tragic mysterious tree On that beautiful scandalous night You and me were atoned by His blood And forever washed white On that beautiful scandalous night On the hillside you will be delivered At the foot of the cross justified And your spirit restored By the river that pours From our blessed Savior's side 4

(BRIDGE) You carried the sin of mankind On Your back And the sky went black

4, 5, & 6-year-old children may be dismissed before the sermon to Godly Play in room 173.

Just as God has the first word in worship, he also has the last word. For those who are in Christ Jesus, these are always words of blessing. We look up and extend our hands out in a posture of receiving the blessing of God.
