The Worship of God March 8, 2009 Welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus! If you are a guest with us, please be sure to sign our Registry when it is passed during the service. Children are welcome in our worship. We have a nursery available for children 3 and under. Children not yet in kindergarten will be dismissed prior to the sermon. Thank you for joining us today and may the Lord richly bless you.

Welcome and Preparation for Worship Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is. Missions exists because worship does not. When this age is over, and the countless millions of the redeemed fall on their faces before the throne of God, missions will be no more. It is a temporary necessity. But worship abides forever. - John Piper

Call to Worship1

Psalm 66:1-4

Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of His name; give to Him glorious praise! Say to God, "How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you. All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name."

The Nicene Creed3

Confession of Faith

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; Who spoke by the prophets; and we believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Wonderful Cross

Hymn of Praise2 Holy, Holy, Holy

Dykes See, from His head, His hands, His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down: Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity.

O the wonderful cross, O the wonderful cross Bids me come and die and find that I may truly live. O the wonderful cross, O the wonderful cross, All who gather here by grace draw near and bless Your name.

Holy, Holy, Holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee. Who wert, and art, and evermore shall be. Holy, Holy, Holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see, Only Thou art holy, there is none beside Thee, Perfect in pow'r, in love, and purity. Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth, and sky and sea, Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity.

Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an off’ring far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

Call to Confession of Sin

We believe that God always initiates with sinners, so we begin worship with his invitation and command to us to gather in his name. All songs used by permission or covered under CCLI license # 391165.

Corporate Confession of Sin Most holy and merciful Father, we acknowledge and confess before You our sinful nature – prone to evil and slothful in good – and all our shortcomings and offenses against You. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from Your ways, in wasting Your gifts, in forgetting Your love. O Lord, have mercy upon us, who are ashamed and sorry for all we’ve done to displease You. Teach us to hate our errors, cleanse us from our secret faults, and forgive our sins for the sake of Your dear Son. Send Your purifying grace into our hearts, that we may live in Your light and walk in Your ways, according to the commandments of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Nicene Creed was written in the 4th century A.D. Its central doctrines are those of the Person of Jesus Christ and the reality of the Holy Spirit. It is the only creed accepted by all three branches of Christendom (Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox). *The word “catholic” means universal.

Psalm 86:5

For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.

Worship with Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs Indescribable From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea, Creation’s revealing your majesty. From the colors of fall to the fragrance of spring, Every creature unique in the song that it sings; All exclaiming, Indescribable, uncontainable, You placed the stars in the sky and you know them by name. You are amazing God! All powerful, untamable, Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim, You are amazing God! Who has told every lightning bolt where it should go? Or seen Heavenly storehouses laden with snow? Who imagined the sun and gives source to its light, Yet conceals it to bring us the coolness of night? None can fathom, Indescribable, uncontainable, You placed the stars in the sky and you know them by name. You are amazing God! Incomparable, unchangeable, You know the depths of my heart and you love me the same. You are amazing God! You are amazing God!

Romans 3:20

For by works of the law no human being will be justified in His sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

Prayers of Meditation for Those Not Communing

Oh to know the pow’r of Your risen life, And to know You in Your suffering, To become like You in Your death, my Lord, So with You to live and never die.

Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Corporate Prayer

Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I owed. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Him as Savior. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Rev. Rob Bailey

Offering Sermon4

Rev. Rob Bailey

The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper A Word About Communion – The bread and juice you see on the Communion table may not look like much to the casual observer. In fact, it is merely bread and juice. What makes this meal special is that the Lord Jesus Christ is spiritually present in a unique way. This sacrament is not something to be taken lightly but neither is it a time to be somber; rather, we should be filled with thankfulness and joy. Our Savior, out of His great mercy, bids His people to come to this meal. If you are a member of a church who embraces the Gospel of Jesus Christ and are at peace with your fellow Christians, we welcome you to this table. Come and consider with us our Lord’s body and shed blood symbolized in the bread and juice. Rejoice with us in our union with Him and with each other as His Covenant people. For those not taking Communion today, we encourage you to carefully think on the prayers found in the section entitled: “Prayers for Those Not Communing”, and we look forward to the day when you may join us in this meal.

4, 5, & 6-year-old children may be dismissed before the sermon to Godly Play in room 173.

Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

Just as God has the first word in worship, he also has the last word. For those who are in Christ Jesus, these are always words of blessing. We look up and extend our hands out in a posture of receiving the blessing of God.
