The Worship of God January 25, 2009 Welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus! If you are a guest with us, please be sure to sign our Registry when it is passed during the service. Children are welcome in our worship. We have a nursery available for children 3 and under. Children not yet in kindergarten will be dismissed prior to the sermon. Thank you for joining us today and may the Lord richly bless you.

Welcome and Preparation for Worship Whoever seeks God as a means toward desired ends will not find God. The mighty God, the maker of heaven and earth, will not be one of many treasures, not even the chief of all treasures. He will be all in all or He will be nothing. God will not be used. His mercy and grace are infinite and His patient understanding is beyond measure, but He will not aid men in their selfish striving after personal gain. He will not help men to attain ends which, when attained, usurp the place He by every right should hold in their interest and affection. – A. W. Tozer

Psalm 33:3-5

Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. For the word of the LORD is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD.

Hymn of Praise2 Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father, There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not, As Thou hast been Thou forever will be. Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed Thy hand hath provided, Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above, Join with all nature in manifold witness, To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide, Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Confession of Faith

Heidelberg Catechism, Questions 27 & 28

Minister: What do you understand by the providence of God? People: God’s providence is His almighty and ever present power, whereby, as with His hand, He still upholds heaven and earth and all creatures, and so governs them that leaf and blade, rain and drought, fruitful and barren years, food and drink, health and sickness, riches and poverty, indeed, all things, come not by chance but by His fatherly hand. Minister: What does it benefit us to know that God has created all things and still upholds them by His providence? People: We can be patient in adversity, thankful in prosperity, and with a view to the future we can have a firm confidence in our faithful God and Father that no creature shall separate us from His love; for all creatures are so completely in His hand that without His will they cannot so much as move.

The Gospel Is True

We believe that God always initiates with sinners, so we begin worship with his invitation and command to us to gather in his name.

All songs used by permission or covered under CCLI license # 391165

Come ye needy, come and welcome; God’s free bounty glorify: True belief and true repentance, every grace that brings you nigh. Without money, without money, come to Jesus Christ and buy. Come ye weary, heavy laden, bruised and broken by the fall. If you tarry till you’re better, you will never come at all. Not the righteous, not the righteous; sinners Jesus came to call. Let not conscience make you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream. All the fitness He requireth is to feel your need of Him. This He gives you, this He gives you, ‘tis the Spirit’s rising beam.

We have a grace that’s amazing; a free gift to know Him by faith, To live for His praise and long for the day, when we see Him face to face. Thank you, Jesus, Oh how we worship You. Thank You, Jesus. Hallelujah, the gospel is true. Hallelujah, the gospel is true.

Lo! The Incarnate God, ascended; pleads the merit of His blood. Venture on Him; venture wholly, let no other trust intrude. None but Jesus, none but Jesus can do helpless sinners good.

Knowing You

We have been crucified with Him, buried and risen to life. Now justified, soon glorified, we shall be made like Christ.

Isaiah 55:6-7

Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Corporate Confession of Sin Lord Jesus, I am blind, be my light, ignorant, be my wisdom, self-willed, be my mind. Open my ear to grasp quickly the Savior’s voice, and delightfully run after His beckoning hand. When Satan approaches, may I flee to Your wounds. Your cross was raised to be my refuge, Your blood streamed forth to wash me clean, Your death occurred to give me a surety, Your name is my property to save me. By You all heaven is poured into my heart, but it is too narrow to comprehend Your love. I was a stranger, an outcast, a slave, a rebel, but Your cross has brought me near, has softened my heart, has made me Your Father’s child, has admitted me to Your family, has made me joint-heir with Yourself. O that I may love You as You love me, that I may walk worthy of You, my Lord, that I may reflect the image of heaven’s first-born. May I always see Your beauty with the clear eye of faith, and feel the power of Your Spirit in my heart, for unless He move mightily in me, no inward fire will be kindled. Amen

Assurance of Pardon in Christ 1

Come Ye Sinners

Come ye sinners, poor and wretched, weak and wounded, sick and sore. Jesus, ready, stands to save you, full of pity joined with power. He is able, He is able; He is willing; Doubt no more.

We have a hope that is living and love that never will end. We have a God who’s forgiven us while we were yet in sin.

Worship with Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs

Psalm 22

The LORD redeems his servants; no one will be condemned who takes refuge in him.

All I once held dear, built my life upon All this world reveres and wars to own, All I once thought gain I have counted loss, Spent and worthless now compared to this. Knowing You, Jesus, knowing You; There is no greater thing. You’re my all, You’re my rest, You’re my joy, my righteousness; And I love You, Lord. Now my heart’s desire is to know You more, To be found in You and known as Yours; To possess by faith what I could not earn, All surpassing gift of righteousness. Oh to know the pow’r of Your risen life, And to know You in Your suffering, To become like You in Your death, my Lord, So with You to live and never die. Knowing You, Jesus, knowing You; There is no greater thing. You’re my all, You’re my rest, You’re my joy, my righteousness; You’re my all, You’re my rest, You’re my joy, my righteousness; You’re my all, You’re my rest, You’re my joy, my righteousness; And I love You, Lord.

Lord Jesus Christ, Be Present Now

Beautiful Scandalous Night

Lord Jesus Christ, be present now; Our hearts in true devotion bow. Your Spirit send with light divine, And let your truth within us shine. (Chorus) Oh Holy Lord – be present now Righteous Lord – shine through us now

At the wonderful, tragic, mysterious tree, On that beautiful, scandalous night you and me, Were atoned by His blood and forever washed white, On that beautiful scandalous night.

Unseal our lips to sing your praise Our souls to You in worship raise Make strong our faith increase our light; That we may know your name aright.

On the hillside you will be delivered, At the foot of the cross, justified. And your spirit restored by the river that pours from our blessed Savior’s side. Ah, you carried the sin of mankind on Your back, And the sky went black.

Until we join the hosts that cry, Holy are you, O Lord Most High!" And in the light of that blest place We then shall see you face to face. All glory to the Father, Son, And Holy Spirit, Three in One! To you, O blessed Trinity, Be praise throughout eternity!

Corporate Prayer

Benediction4 Prayers of Meditation for Those Not Communing Rev. Steve Coward

Offering Sermon3

Matthew 5: 1-12

Go on up to the mountain of mercy To the crimson perpetual tide; Kneel down on the shore, be thirsty no more. Go under and be purified; Follow Christ to the holy mountain. Sinner, sorry and wrecked by the fall, Cleanse your heart and your soul in the fountain that flows For you and for me and for all.

Rev. Rob Bailey

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper A Word About Communion – The bread and juice you see on the Communion table may not look like much to the casual observer. In fact, it is merely bread and juice. What makes this meal special is that the Lord Jesus Christ is spiritually present in a unique way. This sacrament is not something to be taken lightly but neither is it a time to be somber; rather, we should be filled with thankfulness and joy. Our Savior, out of His great mercy, bids His people to come to this meal. If you are a member of a church who embraces the Gospel of Jesus Christ and are at peace with your fellow Christians, we welcome you to this table. Come and consider with us our Lord’s body and shed blood symbolized in the bread and juice. Rejoice with us in our union with Him and with each other as His Covenant people. For those not taking Communion today, we encourage you to carefully think on the prayers found in the section entitled: “Prayers for Those Not Communing”, and we look forward to the day when you may join us in this meal.

Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I owed. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Him as Savior. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

Just as God has the first word in worship, he also has the last word. For those who are in Christ Jesus, these are always words of blessing. We look up and extend our hands out in a posture of receiving the blessing of God. 3

4, 5, & 6-year-old children may be dismissed before the sermon to Godly Play in room 173.
