PAVILION AS ORIENTATION FILTER The “Pace Pavilion”, an entry to the London Olympics competition to design a kiosk for the Stratford station transit hub, acts as a connecting filter between the town, bus station, train station, mall, and the 2012 Olympic Site. As the visitors interact with the pavilion at three different paces [fast, moderate, & slow] it serves to orient, direct, nourish, and provide shopping and resting spaces.

FAST: MOVEMENT REFLECTION Large-scale information disseminates transit and event information quickly. At the fast pace, the Pavilion disseminates large-scale information to masses of people. Movement is minimally impeded—as if reflected off the surface of the pavilion and on to one’s destination. The face of the pavilion acts like one large “Solari” flap departure display board; movement and sense of destination are reflected off the surface of the Pace Pavilion. The north-facing LED “Solari” Departures board posts arrivals/departures, set in a PVB laminated insulated glass façade.

MODERATE: MOVEMENT FILTRATION At the moderate “filter” pace, one cuts through the Pavilion in both sight and movement. The inverted dual-radially arrayed structural ribs filter the view through the transit hub, visually connecting commuters between the four different origins: bus station, train station, parking/shopping mall, and the Olympic Site. A corridor between the two reverse axial grids contains the TfL information/ticket kiosk and filters movement these sites. SLOW: MOVEMENT ABSORPTION At the slow “absorb” pace, one fully engages the Pavilion, waiting, interacting, buying, and ascending to the roof. Stepping up into the Pavilion, the visitor is relieved from plaza currents. The awaiting passenger, suspended in time between connections, rests in the cafe, the exhibit space, the plaza seating or on the roof.

DOUBLE SPIRAL Belgrade’s Science Museum is woven into the science park to intersect educational and scientific facilities. A double spiral is used throughout the program and circulation of the museum to where working science laboratories and interactive exhibits swirl side-by-side towards the center, directly mixing the practice of science with the exhibition of science. At the center of the double spiral is the entrance, exit, and iconic planetarium. From the center of the museum, the double spiral extends into the landscape to create a multi-tiered science park, open to the public, and also contains a high-school, a vocational school, and biotech labs & offices.

the accumulation of waste on the streets are due to several factors including too little space in the favella units, so residents opt to put their trash in the street for trash pickers to collect. cassambas (dumpsters) are unconveniently located towards the periphery of the favella and overflow with trash. municipal solid waste management recycles less than 1% annually of all materials.

These live/work typologies offer a larger repository for informal collection & immediate payment for materials to catadores. Limited storage capacity means that materials are sold when maximum capacity is reached regardless of flucations in material market value and are succeptible to lower profits, creating disincentive to pay higher values to catadores. mechanical limitations on breakdown of material makes for inefficient packing of space

grain silo (recycled intervention)

a minimalist storage typology with minimal footprint impact and offers potential for vertical connections to other infrastructure. recycled materials can be broken down into high quality nurdles and stored like compactly like grain. this offers the informal/formal recycle collection network to store higher quality material for longer and more-controlled lengths of time such that the cost of materials may be leveraged against the fluctuting market and sold at appropriate times/seasons. catadores and ferros velhos alike may share percentages of profits by weight. the grain silo typology itself may be from a repurposed/reycled from old-unused grain farm silos or other industrial silos.

outdoor theater + collection hub

this makes use of the favella’s irregular twisting road network where corner spaces are often unuseable or innefficient. beneath this prototype is a recycle treatment facility that has heavier equpment to process more difficult materials. the theater aspect can be used as a community organizing space.

catadores no longer have to store recycled material in their homes. they become part of a formal/ informal network with collective bargaining leverage over the recycle industry & market

live + work

the superstructure grid housing the silos is an opportunity to graft other programs such as residential and commerical

This project was conceived during the William Kinne travel fellowship at Columbia University to study solid waste management and recycling in favelas in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Research methodologies included surveying waste management zones, interviewing formal and informal waste collectors, and parsing vast amounts of GIS data collected by HABISP. From this I proposed strategies to incorporate informal (catadores) waste pickers who vastly outnumber and formal MSW recycle collectors. The Favela Recycle Bank scheme utilizes several nodes across the favela as recycle stations that monetize materials in the form of profit shares while a centralized recycling center acts as the major processing facility, stores the processed materials to sell when the market is favorable, and then distributes the profits accordingly to recycling-participants. Green Sky Tubes—these protrusions act as both light-well and as air particulate remediation strategy by incorporating indigenous plants that absorb carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, as well as filter other harmful particulates from processing recycled materials.

Thickened Roof—the roof widens and narrows depending on the performance required by the

program that inhabits it. At its thinnest it is just an enclosure, at the thickest it contains air quality control equipment and inhabitable space.

Industrial Air Filtration—some processes require venting during specific parts of refining into higher quality materials.

Recycle Bank Silo Repository—the safety deposit box storing precious processed recycled

materials into tiny nurdles (small beads) that are higher in quality and stack, store, and slide more efficiently.

Community Meeting Rooms & Classrooms—public/private partnerships in the recycle

community requires education, community programming, and empowerment through selforganization & activisim.

Municipal Solid Waste Administrative Offices—since the SP MSW agency currently recycles

less than 1% of all materials, this can act as a headquarters to promote the movement towards recycling throughout Sao Paulo.

Postal Boxes—informal recycling is treated as a type of unemployment fallback for faveladores on the margins, several of whom do not have permanent addresses. These mailboxes would provide them a mailing address and more importantly, where they can pickup their paycheck.

Mesh Screen Wall—Sao Paulo’s subtropical climate sees heavy rains and hot humidity. The rain screen allows for massive natural ventilation to keep the air changing for the particulate-emissions involved in processing recycled materials.

Vehicular Circulation—garbage trucks, dump trucks, and cargo hauling trucks are constantly moving product to and from the site. The center of the site hosts bike lockers and enclosed parking for catadore pushcarts.

CHRISTOPHER GEE ARCHITECTURE | RESEARCH | DESIGN This competition required designing a disaster relief and low-income housing solution with rapid and massive deployment for under $300 per unit. The “Rumah” (house in Indonesian) used corrugated steel (or recycled plastics) and basic prefabrication techniques to ship in flat sheets and be dropped wherever disaster may strike. Geometric configurations of the units acting together allows for several different program to occur including public/ private space, commercial & residential space, as well as community building and security enhancement. Combinations of these programmatic configurations allows for different types of community functions to be created ranging from commercial shops, classrooms, or even soccer fields.

“NOW PLAYING”, SAN FRANCISCO, CA COMPETITION: San Francisco Arts Comission First Place WITH CHRISTO LOGAN & GAYLE STRANG 2011

“Now Playing” was the winner of this single-image competition entry to install a public art piece as part of a revitalization effort of the 6th/Market Street area in San Francisco. A semi-permanent drum-wall installation of 487 reclaimed polycarbonate food-storage barrels was initially proposed. The city awarded us with money to build a stand-alone prototype and hosted an exhibition party for public-involved performances of the drum structure. A skeletal frame was constructed to wrap the barrels, each cut in half like flower-petals, to create a self-supporting tensegrity structure made only of spidering barrel cutouts, rivets, aircraft cable, and ferrels. The frame was then deconstructed, leaving the structure, named “bulbous” to stand on its own for public play.
