DUNSTABLE PLAYS HOST TO NEW ITV DRAMA

Earlier in the year we made our TV debut after welcoming BAFTA award-winning TV Producers and an all-star cast to our Dunstable depot for the production of an ITV drama, The Level.

location for such an exciting project, and I know Steve and Debbie are excited to be making their TV debut. There were many challenges juggling our delivery and filming schedules which demanded absolute silence, Our Dunstable depot was selected as a filming but we’re glad to have been able to accommodate location due to its similarity to Brighton, where the the film crew.” drama is supposed to take place. As our depot is tucked neatly away from the main road, TV Producers had little concerns over prying eyes whilst filming took place - although we’re sure to have raised a few eyebrows during the explosion scenes! Once the TV producers had their way, the major hub was almost unrecognisable as it transformed into Le Saux Haulage. Dunstable Depot Manager Tony Mills said “It was an absolute pleasure to have been chosen as a filming 4

FOOTBALL'S COMING HOME

More than 60 players across Downton’s UK network flocked to Coventry on Saturday 17th September to play head to head against their peers in a fivea-side football tournament. Split into two groups, dedicated tournament manager Sean Teeling kicked off the tournament at 12pm with 30 continuous 10 minute games to reach the knock-out stages. Downton’s North West Team, Barely Athletic, went head to head in the final against the Gloucester Warehouse Team, Real Moreton Valencia, with the latter taking home the title. With a case of beer and a trophy for the winning team, finalist medals and a complimentary football t-shirt for each player, the tournament was a great success, bringing together employees from across the country to strengthen working relationships. APPRENTICESHIP TRENDSETTERS ATTRACTING YOUNG BLOOD INTO THE INDUSTRY

GLOUCESTER DRIVER TRAINER ANDY HEAVEN AND RECRUITMENT MANAGER DAVID LELEU

We first launched our HGV apprenticeship scheme in September 2014 because we wanted the future of our workforce to be in our own hands, and as a result pledged to employ 20 new apprentices each year. Our HGV apprenticeship scheme has been a tremendous success, with amendments to the syllabus due in 2017 to enhance the training further. Our success can be attributed to the dedication of our recruitment and HR teams, our driver trainers and training providers and of course the driver mentors. We place great emphasis on encouraging our apprentices to work alongside experienced professionals. Our 'buddy system' is unique to our apprenticeship scheme and one we believe is crucial to preparing our young drivers for life on the road.

AWARD-WINNING Having excelled in apprenticeship recruitment whilst facing one of the worst skills shortages ever faced by an industry, we received the commendation of Large Employer of the Year in the Gloucester Citizen and Gloucestershire Echo Apprenticeship Awards. 6

Despite narrowly missing out from the title, it was a true accolade to have been shortlisted as an Apprenticeship of the Year finalist in the prestigious Motor Transport Awards alongside Volvo Group, Cemex UK and the eventual winners, The Cartwright Group. We rounded off the year by receiving the Grow Gloucestershire Showcase Awards for Outstanding Business Contribution.

BEYOND THE STEERING WHEEL We have been active in supporting home-grown talent for over ten years in the offering of our HGV Vehicle Workshop Technician apprenticeships. Our Gloucester HGV Workshop is a honeypot for knowledge with around 50% of our employees having started apprentices. Workshop Manager Dave Knight is a true source of inspiration having joined Downton as an apprentice fifteen years ago. We hope to extend apprenticeships into our finance, marketing and administration departments.

APPRENTICE SPOTLIGHT CONNOR PARSONS, APPRENTICE HGV DRIVER One of our brightest talents this year has been Connor Parsons, who made company history as our youngest apprentice and HGV driver. Despite leaving Sixth Form with good grades and a promising future, Connor Parsons ignored the advice of his peers and teachers to pursue his dream career as a HGV Driver. At just 18 years old, Connor achieved one of the fastest acquisitions of the C+E licence on file and was driving 44-tonne vehicles unsupervised earning a full wage. Since qualifying, and nearing the end of his apprenticeship, he has gone from strength to strength becoming a respected member of the national driving team. With an average driver age of 45 years old, Connor offers a fresh perspective to operations and a new lease of life within our older drivers who are compelled to offer words of wisdom to our younger member. Connor is always willing to help by any means possible, including discussing his experiences with media reporters to attract more young people into the industry. Because of this love of transport, he has become one of the faces of the Downton apprenticeship scheme.

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY DOWNTON HELPS KEEP GLOUCESTERSHIRE YOUTH WORKERS ON THE ROAD

COLLAB WITH SOFAB

Downton has donated a van to Young Gloucestershire to help the charity’s essential work with disadvantaged young people across the county. We handed over a Fiat Fiorino van so the charity’s youth workers can continue to support almost 20 youth clubs. The cost-effective van will help the charity save about £1,200 a year to put towards its mentoring programme and mental health consulting. In addition, we have offered to provide work experience placements that could transform the lives of young people throughout Gloucestershire, with an opportunity to join our award-winning apprenticeship scheme.

Downton has committed to buying 300 branded high visibility waistcoats a month from Sofab Sports – the sports retailer that provides employment opportunities and training to young adults with physical and learning difficulties.

The services provided by Young Gloucestershire are in increasing demand, with more young people requiring help from the charity, many of whom are disadvantaged by personal problems and challenges.

As well as providing valuable income for Sofab, the monthly order for 300 branded waistcoats will create two new part-time roles through which young, disabled people in Gloucester will be able to develop vital new skills for the future.

CHARITY CHAMPIONS WITH £10,000 RAISED FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK

KATE DOWNTON WITH CANCER RESEARCH UK GLOUCESTER FUNDRAISING MANAGER JAMES ROGERS

Our employees from across the country have raised £10,000 for Cancer Research UK meeting the target we set ourselves at the start of the year. Our employees from up and down the country took part in running, swimming and endurance events to raise the money. Kate Downton says: “Each year our employees nominate a charity which ensures it’s something everyone here can get behind.

GREAT NORTH SWIM

This year it has been Cancer Research UK and we are all delighted to achieve the phenomenal pledge to raise £10,000. In an industry criticised for its lack of health and fitness, it was encouraging to see so many of our staff signing up for physically demanding sporting events.” In addition to the individuals and teams taking part in the running, swimming and endurance events many employees opted to do their own fundraising. These included Lisa Hough's 10,000ft parachute jump and Sharon McCarthy's 100-mile sportive cycle ride across the demanding Yorkshire hills and moors. Every employee who took part during the year was presented with a special sports jersey detailing the national events in which they participated.

EXPANSION CONTINUES OVER THE WELSH BORDER NEW CHEPSTOW FACILITY SUPPORTS SOUTH WALES CONTRACTS We have purchased a three acre depot with a 50,000 square foot warehouse in Chepstow to support our growing business in South Wales. It will not only add capacity and flexibility to our growing national network, but it will also underpin our service offerings to both AB InBev at Magor and Rockwool at Bridgend. The facility is ideally located in the M4 corridor on the welsh side of the River Severn, close to the Severn Bridge with excellent connections to the UK motorway system. For AB InBev, the warehouse is storing empty glass bottles manufactured by another Downton client Encirc ready for in-bound delivery to the company’s Magor brewery. We also manage the delivery of filled bottles and other AB InBev products direct from Magor to customers nationwide. Whilst awaiting the final fixtures to decorate the office walls, the famous five have ensured they have the essentials covered - tea and coffee. The Chepstow Team, pictured below, in order of appearance are Warehouse Operative Gareth Jones, Depot Manager Terry Carter, Administrator Anu Watkins and Traffic Planners Richard Speke and Steve Johnson.

DOWNTON DRIVER VOTED 'UK' BEST MAGOR DRIVER NAMED UK’S BEST LONG DISTANCE DRIVER IN THE MICROLISE DRIVER OF THE YEAR AWARDS Kevin McLeod beat off competition from more than 100,000 original entrants to be crowned the UK's best long distance driver 2016. The competition is held every year, with commercial drivers from across the country assessed based on data gathered from Microlise telematics systems installed in their vehicles. Analysts from the University of Nottingham assessed tens of thousands of drivers against a range of criteria such as harsh braking, idling and speeding, choosing finalists in three categories: short, medium and long distance. As a finalist, Kevin won a day at the Porsche Experience 14

Centre at Silverstone and was crowned the overall winner of the category at a VIP awards ceremony. Kevin was one of two finalists selected in the long distance category from the company. Clive Hussy was also shortlisted, however it was Kevin who made it through to the final stage of the competition. Kevin McLeod said: “This was a fantastic surprise. I’m sure I was up against some strong competition for the big prize, but just to be named as a finalist would have been a real honour!”

NEW SHARPNESS SUPPORTING OUR DISTRIBUTION FORCES CENTRE SUPPORTS GROWTH We have added a new 15,745m2 (169,478ft2) warehouse at Sharpness, Gloucestershire. Located on the Severn Distribution Park, close to junctions 13 and 14 of the M5 with excellent links to the South West and UK motorway network, it is the perfect location to support the sustained growth of our business by strengthening our capacity in the south west. The new warehouse will serve as the UK distribution centre for our latest client Fever Tree. Depot Manager David Serle and his team have been working tirelessly to become fully-operational in preparation for the busy Christmas period. David Serle said: "While we face a few challenges in getting ourselves settled in and preparing for the impending rush, I'm honoured to have the opportunity to build and expand a successful team and operation here in Sharpness." Since the featured image below was captured, racking installation has begun and is expected to be completed by the year end.

HER MAJESTY'S LORD LIEUTENANT FOR THE COUNTY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE, DAME JANET TROTTER DBE, PRESENTING THE AWARD TO COMPLIANCE MANAGER STUART BROOKS

We're delighted to have received an award for the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Award (ERS). We were awarded the silver award for having demonstrated support towards members of the Armed Forces community in our employment. The presentation of HM Lord-Lieutenant’s Awards for the County of Gloucestershire were held at HQ AARC, Imjin Barracks in Gloucester. A WINNING STREAK OUR PHILOSOPHY TO DELIVER NO MATTER WHAT THE REQUEST HAS SEEN US WIN PRESTIGIOUS CONTRACTS IN 2016. A real asset to the organisation, Head of Business Development Dave Hutchings has facilitated over 10 contract renewals and contract wins in 2016 alone. A keen cyclist, Dave brings his competitive streak on and off the bike. ROCK 'N' ROLL WITH ROCKWOOL We have recently taken on a contract to store and distribute insulation products for Rockwool. The contract will be managed from our new Chepstow location which is close to Rockwool’s production plant near Bridgend, South Wales. We secured the contract, which covers around one third of Rockwool’s output, following a competitive tender process. The manufacturer approached us because of our strong reputation in the market and the scale of our operations. Working together with Rockwool, we identified the most suitable regions for deliveries and proposed a highly efficient and cost-effective solution. 18

The operation delivers a consistent average of 15 full loads each day and, unlike many other Downton contracts, is subject to very limited seasonality or variations in volume. David Hutchings, Head of Business Development said: “We were able to configure a highly effective solution utilising high cube trailers to maximise the loading of tall but lightweight pallets. This contract is a good example of how we work with customers to provide a local solution to meet their national distribution requirement.” ROCKFON We have also recently been selected as the logistics partner for Rockfon, attributed to our exceptional performance in serving Rockwool. A subsidiary of Rockwool, Rockfon is the leading supplier of ceiling and wall solutions. Our Runcorn warehouse will undertake a significant storage and distribution operation, managing Rockfon's entire UK requirement.
