10 System Design for Eco-efficiency

10.10 Virtual Station is a Brazilian company that offers its clients (independent professionals, commercial representatives, individuals or third sector entities) access to a “virtual office”. They offer complete office space, equipment, services and infrastructure; the customers only pay for the time and services they require. Sharing equipment and office space allows them to be used more intensively, and reduces the overall number of products necessary for individual users. Example 10.10 Virtual office, Brazil

10.11 A partnership between Ariston and Enel (Italy) has created a new payper-use washing machine service. It is based on a prepaid number of loads and includes: delivery of the washing machine (which remains in Ariston’s ownership), electricity supply (no direct costs), maintenance, upgrades, replacements and end-of-life collection. This innovative relationship among Ariston, Enel and the end-user economically motivates highly efficient equipment to be designed that is upgradeable, easily maintained and repaired, and recyclable.
