The world’s first pictorial stamp types The first official British colonial stamps without a portrait of Queen Victoria, the design of the 1850 Sydney Views stamps was based on the Great Seal of New South Wales. Granted by King George III in 1791, the Great Seal emphasised the redemptive qualities of Britain’s new penal colony, with the personification of Industry greeting unchained convicts. When Postmaster General James Raymond decided that the colony’s first stamps would feature the motif found on the Great Seal, he ensured that the 1850 Sydney Views would not only be Australia’s first stamps – they would be the world’s first pictorial stamps as well!

The foundation stone of Australian philatelics, the New South Wales 1850 Sydney Views Stamp Series is also a genuine colonial era artefact.
