Australian Military Medals

Naval General Service Medal 1793-1840 bar “Blanche 19th July 1806” impressed to John Patterson Asst Surgn, contact marks and edge bruising otherwise gFine or better with interesting and important Australian links John Patterson joined the Royal Navy as an Assistant Surgeon serving aboard HMS Magnanima from 14th November 1805 to 24th April 1806. He then served aboard the H.M.S Blanche when it engaged and destroyed the French frigate Guerriers off the Faroe Islands. On 4th March 1807 the Blanche was wrecked off Ushant, and Patterson and many members of the ship’s company were made prisoners of war. Having been exchanged or escaped, Patterson returned eventually to England and he served aboard H.M.S Gloucester which he joined ‘per warrant’ 1st April 1812 as an Assistant Surgeon,– being superseded on 18th April 1813 at the Downs. He then joined H.M.S Volontaire, and was discharged due to invalidity 19th December 1814. After a period ashore, he was warranted once more, this time to H.M.Hospital Ship Batavier lying at Woolwich, joining her on 13 August 1814, being discharged to shore 4th August 1815. He was promoted to Surgeon on 1 April 1816 whilst ashore, but only served at that rank twice in H.M. Vessels – in 1821 for one year six months three days on H.M.S Sappho, and H.M.S Hyperion as a supernumerary surgeon from 20th May 1829 to 23rd March 1831. In October 1838 he “requested permission to emigrate to Australia for the benefit of his health” which was granted by Captain Berkeley. In July 1839 the Colonel Secretary, Sydney promulgated in the Government Gazette that on 1 July 1839 the New South Wales Medical Board certified that “John Patterson, R.N. of Melbourne having submitted the necessary testimonials of qualifications, it was declared that the was entitled to be a legally qualified Medical Practitioner in terms of, and according to the provisions of the aforesaid Act”. On 31st December 1840, he requested that the address to which his “half pay” should be sent was Melbourne, Port Phillip, New South Wales. He conducted a practice in Melbourne’s Collins Street in the 1840s Est. $7,500

Waterloo Medal 1815 medal only impressed to Francis Moran, Hospital Asst. Royal Staff Corps, lightly toned, light surface marks and several edge knocks and scrapes else a bold Fine and rare. Sold with a quantity of research incl London Gazette and Army List, and copious material sourced from the website “Free Settler or Felon” as regards his later life in Australia Assistant Surgeon Francis Moran MD was born in Ireland, and after studying medicine at Edinburgh University he attested for service as a hospital assistant with the Royal Staff Corps 22nd April 1813, and subsequently served in the Peninsula Wars from June 1813 to April 1814. Whilst his name is not recorded on the Waterloo Medal Roll, he is believed to have been present at the Battle of Waterloo on 18th June 1815 and to have submitted a successful late claim. In his role as hospital assistant on that day we can assume he was faced with the treatment of a seemingly endless number of casualties in the days that followed, many of whom suffered horrific cannon, gunshot and small arms wounds. The ‘Army List’ of 1821 shows that he was promoted to the rank of Assistant Surgeon 17th August 1815, soon after this famous battle, and was later placed on half pay from 25th December 1818. He went on to take a position as Assistant Surgeon in the Colonial Medical Establishment of New South Wales, Australia, arriving there 15th August 1822 and remained in this position for a number of years, largely based at Port Macquarie and Newcastle – having become a land owner at Hunter’s River, in particular the Duck River Farm. During his time there he appears to have played a prominent role in treating an outbreak of whooping cough, amongst other numerous examples of medical practice. He retired from the position and moved to Sydney for a time, where he was involved in saving the lives of a father and daughter from drowning, before travelling to India. He was mentioned in the London Gazette on 18th November 1831 as transferring at Madras into the 54th Foot Regiment as Assistant Surgeon, however after several years he returned to Australia, residing in Pitt Street Sydney. At this point he appears to have run into trouble with authorities, and was imprisoned for ‘an impropriety of conduct in the Police Office’. He was soon released, but was immediately struck down with illness and delirium, and was found dead 30th March 1839 with the cause of death considered ‘disease due to ill–temperance’ which given his symptoms and life in the tropics seems somewhat harsh Est. $7,500

In 1819 during a hydrographic survey of the Greek archipelago, he became aware of the recent discovery of the masterpiece ‘Venus de Milo’ and his keen observation and effort to ensure its acquisition for France earned him the title Chevalier of the Legion d’Honneur. In 1826 he undertook his most famous voyage, a three–year scientific circumnavigation to the South Seas during which he skirted the coast of southern Australia, prepared navigation charts of New Zealand, the Loyalty Islands, the Caroline Islands and the Moluccas and explored the coasts of New Guinea and Solomon Islands. During this voyage he identified the cultural differences that make up various island groups and invented the terms Micronesia and Melanesia to distinguish those people from the Polynesians. He returned to France in 1829 with a wealth of zoological, botanical and mineralogical specimens and reports. His later voyages brought him again to the South Seas where he sailed into Hobart and was received by Governor Franklin before turning south to Antarctica, in what was to become the last of the great French exploration voyages. In 1840 he was promoted to Rear Admiral and became President of the Societe de Geographe. He perished with his entire family in the fire of the Versailles Rail Disaster (8 May 1842) and is buried in Cimitere Montparnasse in Paris Est. $900

A letter was read from Messrs. Bingle and Son, dated Newcastle, New South Wales, 11th December, 1858, enclosing papers relative to the wreck of the Timandra, on the night of the 23rd October “It appeared that the Timandra grounded on a shoal off Cape Keppel, Australia, on the night of the 23rd October, 1858, that at daylight in the morning Captain Morrison, discovering the wreck and the perilous position of the crew and passengers, immediately weighed and proceeded to their assistance, and placed his vessel at considerable hazard, though having 130 passengers on board, so as to get the people from the wreck, which was then fast breaking up; the hull not being visible, the foremast and bowsprit standing and the mainmast gone, the whole crowded with human beings clinging to them for safety in a very exhausted state, the sea washing over them. By the admirable conduct of Captain Morrison all were saved, 90 in number; his courage and skill united with great presence of mind being, under god, the means. The passengers further set forth the gratitude of the rescued persons, for his kind and benevolent conduct to them after he got them on board” Copy of a letter from the Government thanking him, and stating that the Captain of the Isis had represented his conduct as highly praiseworthy; “The Committee being fully impressed with the courage, seamanlike skill, and humanity displayed by Captain Morrison on the occasion before recited, do hereby award him the Gold Medal of the Institution” Est. $10,000
