Beech/Dunbar, John; sketch book containing original hand-drawn sketches in pencil, pen & ink and watercolour by Pte. John Beech with some newspaper cuttings pasted in, inscription penned in the front “In Grateful Remembrance – Pte J. Beech, 34th AIF, Winchcombe Jan 4, 1918”, a group of war-time illustrations without combat views; instead, a group of delightful studies of men and women including soldiers, nurses and civilians during the time of war, some humorous such as “Dressed to Kill: Two Styles” showing a crusty soldier and a dapper gent face to face, others show battle weary soldiers at rest, relaxation and rehabilitation, a unique view of life and humanity during war by an artist with a keen eye and a good hand, from first hand ‘on the spot’ observation, some pages coming adrift but the pictures bright and clear ex Harrower Collection of Australian Militaria (honouring the sacrifice and commitment of Australian war service personnel) See online catalogue HTML version for additional images of the sketches See also lot 280 for a YMCA Gift Book with signatures of prominent WWI officers, also ex Harrower Collection 2035 Pte John Beech, 34th Battalion AIF, real name Ernest Dunbar, the son of Charles and Elizabeth Dunbar, born Scone NSW 1890. He enlisted with the AIF 1st January 1915 and was with the 13th Battalion at Gallipoli where he was wounded. He was sent back to Egypt for convalescence where he was infected with a transmittable disease and returned to Australia where he was discharged as Medically Unfit. Using the assumed name John Beech, he re-enlisted and served with the 34th Battalion until he was gassed at Passchendaele, eventually being invalided back to Australia with Trench Foot in August 1918. He suffered difficult consequences from his assumed identity and died a pauper at Cheltenham (Vic) Asylum in 1925, aged just 35. Australian War Memorial and National Archives records reflect that Dunbar and Beech are the same man. Another of his sketchbooks bearing the name 1533 Private John Dunbar 13th Battalion is housed in the Australian War Memorial Collection (ART19520) Est. $750 More images viewable on website
