Supreme Court of Van Diemen’s Land Hobart Town document detailing the charges against Robert Jarvis of Hobart Town of theft by deception “with intent to cheat and defraud and to obtain goods by means of false pretences, to the evil example of all others, and against the peace of our said Lord the King, his Crown and Dignity”, extensive detail of the charges hand written on a printed velum document 7th March 1837 and signed at the bottom by Alfred Stephen, the plea “Not Guilty” hand entered in the upper left margin, notation on the back “Verdict Robert Jarvis – Guilty. Sentence 20 March 1837. Robert Jarvis – to be transported beyond here(?) for the term of Seven years”, spiked in the left margin and heavy folds but a good clear document and scarce Internet biographical research on Justice Alfred Stephen included with the lot Est. $300

Inside the front cover are nine handwritten signatures, amongst them are those of W.R.Birdwood (General William Riddle Birdwood, Commander of the AIF), R.A.Carruthers (Brigadier General Carruthers, ex Indian Army, Head of General Staff, AIF), R.G.Chirnside (Captain Robert Gordon Chirnside, Aidede-Camp to General Birdwood), C.B.B.White (Hon Lt General Sir Cyril Brudenell Bingham White, founder of the AIF and the genius responsible for the evacuation of Gallipoli), C.H.Brand (MajorGeneral Charles Henry Brand, Divisional Commander, the first DSO awarded on Gallipoli), S.S.Butler (Lieut Colonel Butler, GSO 1 Anzac Intelligence, AIF), and J.S.Churchill (Major Churchill, AIF Camp Commander). Tasmanian ticket of leave issued at Campbelltown January 1848 for the prisoner Thomas Mills, crudely tape repaired with leaching of the adhesive into the paper, Poor-Fair, comes with research notes Thomas Mills of Manchester was convicted of burglary at Salford in January 1842 and sentenced to ten years of deportation. He was transported to Van Diemen’s Land on the Marquis of Hastings 15th July 1842, arriving at Hobart Town 7th November 1842. He was granted a one week ticket of leave in 1848 for good behaviour Est. $500

Beech/Dunbar, John; sketch book containing original hand-drawn sketches in pencil, pen & ink and watercolour by Pte. John Beech with some newspaper cuttings pasted in, inscription penned in the front “In Grateful Remembrance – Pte J. He enlisted with the AIF 1st January 1915 and was with the 13th Battalion at Gallipoli where he was wounded. He was sent back to Egypt for convalescence where he was infected with a transmittable disease and returned to Australia where he was discharged as Medically Unfit. Using the assumed name John Beech, he re-enlisted and served with the 34th Battalion until he was gassed at Passchendaele, eventually being invalided back to Australia with Trench Foot in August 1918. He suffered difficult consequences from his assumed identity and died a pauper at Cheltenham (Vic) Asylum in 1925, aged just 35. Australian War Memorial and National Archives records reflect that Dunbar and Beech are the same man.
