7:00pm – 9:30pm Chorus Rehearsal Song list for Monday: If I Loved You Tin Roof Blues A Most Unusual Day Consider Yourself ***************************************************************

Music Notes… Rehearsal Plan 3-12-18 Thank you to all of those who were able to squeeze themselves onto the Piper Shores stage this past Monday. I felt that was a very well done concert and we carried a lot of the ideas and concepts presented to us from Steve and Renee onto the show stage. You allowed me to be more demanding on staying with me and creating music together which ultimately allowed us to present a more entertaining concert for the audience. The afterglow was fun too! There were many points of great singing but a few points that show we still have note, word and rhythm issues on a few songs. Let’s address the ones we know about individually and as a group next week. Next week is out intramural quartet contest and I am excited to hear what our members have been working on. It should be a lot of fun. It will happen after the break next week so if you have friends and family joining you can let them know that we will be having our chorus rehearsal for the first part of the evening and then the contest. Talking to Steve a couple of weeks ago when he and Renee were here he had a few ideas for If I loved you that I want to implement. Next week we will take a slightly different approach to the introduction, interpretation wise, with a slight note variation for the harmony parts. What I am looking for is a more robust introduction with a word pattern spelled out as follows: “Somehaaoow-I-canseeee, (musical breath to propel the next section) Just exactly haow-I’d-Bee (Ah-eed Bee)! Then ALL parts in unison on the melody “If I Loved You” Then back to four parts on “Time and again…”. So, please learn the melody (lead part) the first “If I Loved You”. If it is outside your best quality vocal range then don’t sing it but still mouth the words. We’ll see if this can bring this introduction back to life. Make sure you have all your notes and the news ones mentioned if you are a harmony part.

We will also work on Tin Roof Blues to get better sense of “back beat” out of everyone. There are moments when it happens and other times when it stumbles. We need to identify those points and help each adjust them. We will also review the introduction and middle section of “A most Unusual Day”. I know some of you will be crying foul because we are supposed to be completely through this song by now but reality is otherwise. I’m not sure if this song is just too hard or if members aren’t really interested in it but progress has been disappointingly slow. What we have done so far has not been of the quality I expect either so more help is needed. Please keep trying and give feedback to your section leaders if you have ideas or need help. Song list for next week: If I Loved You Tin Roof Blues A Most Unusual Day Consider Yourself Stay safe in the stormy weather and we’ll see you next week. In two weeks we will have our first presentation coaching session with Diane Patterson so please make every effort to be at rehearsal. Jay

Downeaster Member survey on its way. Your feedback is needed! To all of our awesome Downeasters, you will shortly be receiving a members’ survey via survey Monkey. Mike Soper and Joe Baggs have spent considerable time putting it together, drawing upon a standard chapter survey developed by the Society and one developed by the Vocal Revolution. Our goal is to make chapter life as rewarding as possible. All answers will be kept confidential, so please be frank and honest with your responses. It should take you about 20 minutes to complete. Please spend time completing this survey. It will make us a better organization with happier members. On behalf of the Board, thanks for your input.

fred moore Reminder: Complete Downeasters Survey We have only 18 responses so far to the chorus survey. I suspect most of you are at home during the storm. This is a good time to fill out the survey if you haven't done it already. Link: Downeasters Survey -- Mike

American A cappella podcast pays tribute to Terry Clarke Host Mike Maino and special guest Matt Macolini share their remembrances of Boston Common's legendary bass Terry Clarke on the American A cappella podcast. The sudden loss of this barbershop icon reverberated throughout the BHS family and beyond, with many stories and musical tributes shared online, at chapter meetings, and at Harmony Hall. The outside world got a glimpse as well, with this piece by FOX News contributor and podcaster Tom Shillue and an article in the Boston Globe. In the words of Terry's son, Lawson, "if there’s any consolation to be had it’s knowing my Dad went out laughing and singing, which, if you knew him, was exactly how he went through life. And frankly, I can’t think of a more fitting end to such a magnificently funny and talented life."

Jim Henry's Barbershop Ministry Check out the YouTube link below. For those new to barbershop, and us old-timers too, I promise, this will be one of the most rewarding hours you can use in your day. Tonight I rewatched Jim Henry's speech at Harmony University in 2008. It is an inspiring tribute to what we do. I encourage all Downeasters to watch all 5 parts. Plan your night, sit down, relax, and go thru all 5. You will be filled with inspiration for even greater heights in 2018. YouTube Link: ~Mike
