Music Notes… Rehearsal Recap for 3/11/19 and Plan for 3/18/19 In an attempt to use some of the good teaching and rehearsal practices presented to me as a director at the numerous classes and seminars I’ve attended we started the evening off with a quick review of the key concepts from the previous week and what the members thought were important points that made a positive difference in the rehearsal and music. Several members presented good reminders of the concepts we worked on and there were good questions from members who were not present the previous week to clarify them such as “one and three” situations. The key concepts for vocal placement and using your breath and body in the Bel Canto style presented by Debra Lynn (who will be back Monday, April 1 by the way) continue to be employed and refined by our members. Those
that listened from out front were very impressed with the quality of the music created by the singers on the risers. We also tried a modified version of two part dueting where the other parts who would have been asked previously to perform at a volume zero were invited to “ooo” their part if not on the words. This was suggested by Fred as a means of keeping more singers engaged throughout the rehearsal and it seemed to work to that end. The challenge is that the “volume zero” allows me or whoever is working with the two dueting parts to hear JUST those two parts and more quickly and accurately discern if there are problems to address or not. For the modified version to meet the same ends then the “oooing” sections need to do so at full performance mode but volume “1” or “2” instead of full performance volume as we did this week. We will certainly do that again going forward. Another twist which was suggested from the risers was try a “shotgun” approach to riser placement instead of in sections. You may recall we were in a specific shotgun placement some time ago with the help of Steve Tramack and George but I made the decision to move to sections as there were many singers struggling to sing their part without the same voice part near them. At the break we did an “informal” shotgun and allowed members to choose the riser position of their choice and the results were very positive both for the singers on the risers and for me out front. It helped expand the sound of each section across the risers and created a more uniform wall of sound. Individual members were surprised and impressed with their ability to change their surroundings and adapt to it. I am very willing to continue towards a return to shotgun riser positions with the application of some of the concepts of “pods” and like voices (not necessarily voice parts) brought to us by Steve. More exploration is required! We spent a fair amount of time dueting How Deep is the Ocean with all the different combinations of tenor-lead-bass and bari with the intent of working out the word and phrase patterns for this song. The results are becoming more and more refined and defined. We currently have 25 members who will be participating in the Spring contest April 12, 14 members who will not be attending, 8 who might and 29 who have not responded one way or the other. Please be sure to indicate whether you are going or not so that registrations can be completed successfully. Starting next week we will take a portion of the rehearsal to work with those members who will be at the Spring contest so that we can work out riser placement and pitchpipe duties among other things. The desire to be positioned in a shotgun formation means that some people will have slightly different performance moves depending on where they end up on the risers. Nothing to be worried about, just a heads up to be prepared to adapt! For next week: Star Spangled Banner – we sing at the opening Seadog game April 4 Irish Blessing Wonderful Day Medley A Cop on the Beat Recording: Consider Yourself I’m Gonna Live till I Die New Music: How Deep is the Ocean A Most Unusual Day
Happy St. Patrick’s day everyone! Jay

Intersectional contest The intersectional contest is coming!. Baris and basses will combine to make one group, leads and tenors the other. Each group will learn one song in 4-part harmony (most likely a simple pole cat.) The object is to have as many people as possible sing a voice part they don’t normally sing. We are planning to devote three sectionals to learning the song for the intersectional contest contest, starting right after the spring convention. We will then plan to hold the contest on May 6 I will ask the section leaders to have the songs elected within a week. The song which the tenors and leads will be singing in the intersectional contest in 4-part harmony is Heart of my Heart. Our goal is to have everyone sing a voice part they don’t normally sing. Music and learning tracks are available on the web site. Kindly respond to Walt and I with your first and second choice as to which voice part you want to sing. We may ask some folks to try a part thy haven’t chosen if necessary to cover all four parts. For example, we will need several tenors to sing lead. Once everyone’s got an assigned voice part, please start learning it. We will devote three sectionals to the song starting the Monday after the spring convention, i.e, April 15, but we need everyone to be ready so we don’t spin our wheels. Thanks for listening In song, fred moore
