BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW by Dick Wheeler -----------That the Society's highest membership total was 55000 and change. -----------That our chapter's highest membership total was 81. Thanks to Bill Ringwall. -----------That the most men we ever put on stage in a contest was 64. -----------That Everett Nau and Ronnie Menard both addressed the chapter about twenty some odd years ago on separate occasions and both predicted the demise of the Society within two decades. -----------That a member of a guest quartet assaulted a woman in a local hotel and was put into the slammer. The chapter president had to go to the station and get him released. This was sixty years ago. I don't know the name of the guy and you don't need to know the name of the quartet. -----------That a member of a NED champion quartet from the fifties liked Portland so much that he gave up barbershopping and sang in local bars for several decades. He used to drop in on our meetings once in awhile. I believe he hailed from the New Bedford area. -----------That political correctness reared its ugly head in the chapter around 1999. Chorus members were considering adding "Christopher Columbus" and "I'll Be Standing On The Pier

Handing Out Doughnuts When They Send The Girls Over There". The first one had been a popular part of our repertoire years before and the second song was sung with some success by one of this writer's quartet some time back. A vote was taken and the PC side outvoted the opposition. Both songs were scrapped !! If you're curious as to how this writer voted, I was on the losing side and quite unhappy.
