Music Notes… Rehearsal Recap for 10/7/19 and Plan for 10/14/19 First off, thank you for a great rehearsal this week. I appreciate your willingness to try out and apply new ideas to help everyone become better singers. The quality of the music we are able to produce together get better every week and it it’s because everyone is contributing and doing their part. We do have rehearsal next week just so you know even though it is Columbus Day and holiday for some. With our Christmas guest singer program in full swing and contest prep we need the time together to make both endeavors successful. For those attending contest, the order of appearance has been published and we are singing #11 out of 14. The time matrix hasn’t been published yet but as soon as we know our dressing room and warmup/travel/on stage time we will share that. Of course, most of us will already be there doing our assigned duties as host chapter for the contest. Our contest uniform will be black dress shoes, black socks, black tux pants, black belt, solid color dress shirt, colorful long tie and black vest. This is the same outfit as our other contest. Please make sure your uniform is clean and neat for the performance. DO NOT wear it while “on duty” at the contest venue. DO wear your short sleeve or long sleeve Downeasters shirt and khaki pants during the days you are helping as competitors will be counting on identifying us when they need help. I can hear a difference when we employ the word “blew” in place of the word “blue” in all instances. It gives a much brighter, freer sound and helps with keeping the “aye, lassie” inner placement that Debra has worked so hard to help us learn. Please continue to do that! Our Christmas Repertoire for this season will be as follows: These can all be found in the Christmas section of our members only music area. Angels we have Heard on High Do You Hear What I Hear Go Tell it on the Mountain Hark the Herald Angels Sing – note there is a separate sheet for the repeat and ending we have added Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas Jingle Bell Rock O Come All Ye Faithful Oh Holy Night Silent Night We Wish You A Merry Christmas Winter Wonderland New music: We should all be off the paper if you are on the risers for Nevertheless and From the First Hello. As it was mentioned from the risers this week we have not spent rehearsal time on these pieces but there has been a schedule running for learning them with the expectation that work is done outside of rehearsal. If you are only working on music as we sing it in rehearsal we won’t get very far very fast.

From my message two weeks ago we are scheduled to start “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” which is in the music section too with sheet music and tracks next week. I would like to start with the “tag” at measure 57 through to the end. Please be familiar with that section of the music (notes, words and rhythms from the sheet and tracks) and we will read through it together with sheet music later in the rehearsal. Next week: We will continue with Christmas music for the first half of the rehearsal Do You Hear What I Hear (George and Bill soloists) O Come All Ye Faithful Winter Wonderland – be sure to go over the middle section “ in the meadow we can build a snowman…” How Deep is the Ocean – recording (my apologies to those trying to record this week and I cut you short) Blue Skies (Blew Sk-eyes) – cleaning up the bass and tenor melody sections (for all parts) page 3 measure 30 through the middle of page 4 measure 60. From the First Hello Nevertheless Some really amazing things happened towards the end of the rehearsal when more people committed to responding (not just following) my directing gestures rather than just “singing the plan”. Singing the plan is a good tool to fall back on when you are unsure or get into trouble. Responding to my directing gives us a much more engaging and exciting performance when singers trust themselves and their fellow riser mates and explore the music with me. I really appreciate it when it happens and so will our audience. There are still singers holding back for various reasons and I encourage you to give it a try. Have a great week and we’ll see you soon.
