Biofertilizers

Biofertilizers, what are they, how do they work, where can you use them and what good does it do for me to use them? Biofertilizers are not your conventional NPK formulations like a 20-10-10 that contain forms of mined or reacted nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These minerals basically dissolve and are made available through the soil solution within the root system. Biofertilizers are made up of ingredients that are in the world of micro-organisms. These organisms may be active or dormant These small organisms that can be added to the plant or soil help not only conventional nutrients become more available but the organisms themselves become a source of nutrients for the plants. When these organisms become active on the plant or in the soil, they enhance soil mineral availability. The microorganisms involved can be bacteria, fungi, or algae, depending on the purpose of the product. They may be alive or dormant, in which case they will become active upon application. When applied to the soil or growing media, these organisms colonize the soil and/or root, leaf surface (and sometimes even the inside of the plant!). How these products work is bacteria, fungi, and algae are more efficient at breaking down, releasing, and harvesting both organic and mineral nutrition than plant roots are. In agricultural soils, turf, hydroponics, and other “man-made settings, we need to add new microorganism populations to the soil/grower media to reinvigorate the microbial population and support the creation of these beneficial associations in our crops and landscapes. Some organisms release nitrogen, others phosphorous, and still other release metal cations + (such as zinc, calcium, or iron). Some are better at breaking down organic materials, such as compost, leaf litter, turf thatch, and manure. Other microorganisms go to work altering the soil structure, creating better tilth, aggregation, aeration, or water-holding capacity, among other things.

Depending on the purpose, biofertilizers can be applied as seed coatings, to the soil, or to the plant canopy ranging from turf, to nurseries and green house production. Applied correctly, biofertilizers can help to reduce nutritional inputs, create favorable soil characteristics, help with stressful conditions, benefit soil and plant health, and increase plant health. The key is to match the right biofertilizers to the purpose, crop, and location. Illinois: (815) 872-1190 6

Soil Amendments

Soil amendment products are used to improve soil porosity and aggregation, increase or-

ganic matter content, or change some biochemical property, such as pH or salinity. Different products, both liquid and dry, each made of different chemical or biological components, are needed to impart the necessary changes to the soil. A good starting point in choosing what soil amendment to use is to understand the physical and chemical makeup of your soil, often with a soil test as a guide. What is the texture of your soil? Is the structure adequate and balanced, or does your soil contain too much sand, silt, or clay content? Perhaps your soil is compacted, saline, low in organic matter, too high or low in pH, or lacking in beneficial microbes. Ideal surface soil should be loose and aerobic with the look and feel of ground coffee, generally around neutral pH, low in dissolved salts, and with a balanced nutrient profile. Deeper soil should provide pore space that allows both drainage and capillary water movement. The goal is to create a rooting environment which allows adequate root exploration and a soil solution which is rich in balanced nutrients and biology. The right soil amendment will allow you to improve any of these characteristics, should they be out of balance in your soil. Healthy, balanced soil will help you grow healthy plants. When soil conditions are optimal, seedling emergence is faster, roots are bigger and more efficient, disease and pest pressure is lessened, stress is ameliorated, and yields are increased. Additionally, optimal, healthy soils are often easier to work, potentially decreasing labor costs. Choosing the right soil amendment requires a detailed understanding of your soil’s natural characteristics. Douglas Plant Health has the right products and experience to assist you with identifying the correct soil amendments and application techniques to improve your soil.

Fertilizers

Fertilizers are inputs of plant nutrients which are essential to maintain plant growth and health. Plants which do not have adequate nutrition are more susceptible to environmental stressors such as drought, frost, wind as well as to opportunistic insects and pathogens. To add complexity to the matter, plants require different combinations of nutrients at different growth stages, leading to the kaleidoscope of fertilizing products on the market. Fertilizers are available as granules (fast or slow-release), water soluble powders, or liquids, depending on the plant, growing environment, or application method. Liquid fertilizers can be chelated or complexed, allowing for a better shelf life and more efficient transfer of nutrition to the plant. While most liquid fertilizers are quick-release, some offer slow-release sources of nutrition. Liquid fertilizers can be applied directly to the soil or to the canopy, depending on the plant, season, environment, or growth stage. Fertilizing substances, which provide principally nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), and potassium (K), as well as macro- and micro-nutrients can be synthetically or naturally derived. Synthetic fertilizers are created as part of an industrial process, and often offer highly concentrated nutrition. Natural fertilizers are derived from plants, animals, composts, or other sources, and are often less concentrated nutritionally but often much healthier for soil and environment. Choosing the right fertilizer can be a complicated undertaking, and a good place to start is with a thorough understanding of your soil and your plant’s needs. The choice of fertilizer will depend on soil characteristics such as pH, CEC, and soil nutritional content, as well as the plant, growth stage, climate, application equipment, and environmental concerns, such as potential for runoff or leaching. You will want to reach out to your agronomist or technical sales representative to help you make the wisest choice. Choosing the right fertilizer will help you achieve better plant and soil health, higher yield, and more efficient production.

Cal Mag Max 7-0-3

Calcium and Magnesium are very important secondary nutrients and part of the chlorophyll molecule which is necessary for sugar formation. Inadequate amounts of Magnesium will first appear as a general loss of green color at bottoms of older leaves (interveinal chlorosis). Calcium and Magnesium deficiencies occur mostly in soils with a high pH over 8 and acidic soils with a pH less than 6.5. High levels of calcium and potassium will also reduce Magnesium uptake. • • • •

Micronutrients

Micro-nutrients are elements needed by plants and other living things in very small amounts. While macronutrients (nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg), are required in large quantities, micronutrients are needed in small amounts but are still essential to plant health. The micro-nutrients include boron (B), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), cobalt, (Co) and chlorine (Cl). Each micro-nutrient has a distinct function within the plant, but they are all interrelated, and often depend on each other, macronutrients, and other compounds within the plant to function. Some micro-nutrient deficiencies are visually obvious, causing stunting, discoloration, and abnormal growth, but some may be elusive and cause the effect of a “hidden hunger”. This hidden hunger may put the plant into stress, making the plant more susceptible other environmental and biological impacts. When addressing the importance of recognizing the “hidden hunger” and why it occurs one needs to know that some micro-nutrients, although they may be picked up on a soil test, may not be truly available to the plant because of soil chemistry, poor soil structure or poor microbial activity. Micro-nutrient deficiencies can be addressed with ground or foliar applications. With ground applications, certain soil characteristics may cause the applied nutrition to become “bound up” and unavailable to plants. Because of this, often the most efficient method for providing micro-nutrients is through a foliar application. Foliar applications of micro-nutrients can be applied in a general treatment regime, or at specific times of the plant’s growth cycle, depending on the plant, season, or other needs. Understanding how to apply micronutrients efficiently depends on a thorough understanding of your soil, plant, environment, and other factors. Douglas Plant Health knows how to address your micro-nutrient issues with agronomy support, product support and research to connect all the functions of soil chemistry, soil structure and biology for the best return on your investment into plant health and overall profit.

BioPesticides

Biopesticides are plant-protection products which contain either living organisms (microbial pesticides) or substances derived from living organisms and certain minerals (biochemical pesticides). Microbial pesticides are living bacteria, fungi, algae, or viruses which can control plant pests, pathogens, or weeds. Biochemical pesticides are substances derived from plants, animals, or microbes which serve the same functions. In both cases, biopesticides can target either specific pests or act in a more broad-spectrum fashion by helping plants upregulate their own defense systems. Both classes of biopesticides differ from conventional, synthetic pesticides in several crucial ways. Biopesticides are often significantly less toxic to plants, humans, and the environment than conventional pesticides, and rarely affect non-target organisms. Biopesticides are often effective in small quantities and degrade quickly in the environment, leading to less pollution. And importantly, when incorporated into Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs, biopesticides help to combat pesticide resistance and can sometimes lower conventional pesticide use or extend the useful lifetime of conventional chemistries. Because of their nature, choosing the right biopesticide requires a keen understanding of the problem, plant, soil, climate, and environmental factors. Microbial pesticides, as living things, require care in their use to ensure that the microbes survive and thrive. Biopesticides are most effective in a coordinated program which optimizes soil and environmental conditions for optimal health of both plant and microbes. Despite these complexities choosing the right biopesticide will aid in controlling pests, increase plant and soil health and maximize conventional pesticide inputs. Biopesticides may also decrease resistance to conventional pesticides possibly lengthening their lifespan. To maximize your investment, contact your agronomist or technical sales representative to work through your biopesticide and IPM options.
