Biofertilizers

A bio-fertilizer is a product which contains selected, living micro-organisms that colonize the

root rhizosphere, or the interior of the plant, and promote growth by increasing the supply or availability of plant nutrients. Some sequester and release nitrogen, others solubilize tightly bound phosphorous, and still others release metal cations such as zinc, calcium, or iron into the soil solution for plant uptake. The reason these products work is because bacteria and fungi are more efficient than the plant itself at releasing nutrients that are bound up by the soil. Plants naturally evolved these beneficial associations thousands of years ago. Commercial Crop production is plant growth that we do not leave to chance, so we add microorganisms to the crop to invigorate their microbial populations, accelerate the natural processes, and provide those plants with the advantages needed to maximize development and yield. Other Bio-fertilizer products excel at breaking down organic materials, such as crop residues, compost, leaf litter, thatch, and manure. During this process, our microorganisms go to work improving the soil structure, creating better tilth, aggregation, aeration, and water-holding capacity. In other words, they improve a soil’s fertility. Biofertilizers are applied to whatever part of the plant that we are seeking to influence. They can go directly on the seed or transplant, be injected into the active area of the root zone. They may be directed at the plant canopy, or they may be inoculated onto residues and soil amendments. They are living organisms and have similar requirements to any living thing. They need food, water, air to breathe, and a habitable environment. Applied properly biofertilizers can help reduce nutritional inputs, increase favorable soil characteristics, reduce stress, improve soil & plant health, ultimately leading to increased yield. Because the purpose and longevity of each microorganism is different, please consult the product label and your DPH representative to make sure you are applying biofertilizers in a way that gives you the greatest opportunity to succeed.

Soil Amendments

Soil amendment products are used to improve soil porosity and aggregation, increase or-

ganic matter content, or change some biochemical property, such as pH or salinity. Different products, both liquid and dry, each made of different chemical or biological components, are needed to impart the necessary changes to the soil. A good starting point in choosing what soil amendment to use is to understand the physical and chemical makeup of your soil, often with a soil test as a guide. What is the texture of your soil? Is the structure adequate and balanced, or does your soil contain too much sand, silt, or clay content? Perhaps your soil is compacted, saline, low in organic matter, too high or low in pH, or lacking in beneficial microbes. Ideal surface soil should be loose and aerobic with the look and feel of ground coffee, generally around neutral pH, low in dissolved salts, and with a balanced nutrient profile. Deeper soil should provide pore space that allows both drainage and capillary water movement. The goal is to create a rooting environment which allows adequate root exploration and a soil solution which is rich in balanced nutrients and biology. The right soil amendment will allow you to improve any of these characteristics, should they be out of balance in your soil. Healthy, balanced soil will help you grow healthy plants. When soil conditions are optimal, seedling emergence is faster, roots are bigger and more efficient, disease and pest pressure is lessened, stress is ameliorated, and yields are increased. Additionally, optimal, healthy soils are often easier to work, potentially decreasing labor costs. Choosing the right soil amendment requires a detailed understanding of your soil’s natural characteristics. Douglas Plant Health has the right products and experience to assist you with identifying the correct soil amendments and application techniques to improve your soil.

Seed Treatments

A seed treatment would be a liquid or dry product that is intended to be applied directly to the seed, as opposed to in the soil or canopy. Seed treatments vary widely in their composition and claimed benefits. Seed treatments can contain nutrients, fungicides, insecticides, biologicals, or any combination of these. Seed treatments have the unique advantage of being able to impact the plant from its very earliest stages. Protecting and providing for the young seedling from its earliest stages allows that seedling to express it’s full genetic potential. Although the plant will still require protection and provision the rest of the season, seed treatment can prevent early season loss of productivity that can never be regained.

Biological seed treatments, which contain bacteria or fungi, give the unique opportunity to colonize roots with beneficial organisms at seedling emergence. Once established, these organisms continue to live in association with the plant’s roots all through the growing season, carrying out their vital roles in plant health and growth. In fact, root exudates feed the microbes and allow the plant to act as a microbe incubator, multiplying the effectiveness of the seed treatment itself. Some of the major benefits of biological seed treatments include increased yield, faster emergence, increased nutrient cycling, stress resistance, and disease suppression. Additionally, seed treatments offer an economical, easy to use method of increasing biological diversity of soils, leading to improved overall soil health and the creation of favorable growing conditions. Seed treatments may be applied to the seed prior to or at planting. Commercial seed treatment application equipment is available for treating large quantities of seed. Hand mixing can be done for smaller volumes. Seed treatments can play an integral role in the grower’s overall efforts of improving soil health and increasing nutrient use efficiency when incorporated into an overall fertility program. Because of the many types and uses of seed treatments, it is important to reach out to your agronomist or technical representative to learn how to harvest the most benefit from each application.

Myco Seed Treat

Myco Seed Treat® (MST) is a dry blend of bacteria and fungi that support the soil microbiology, the under-cover crop, during establishment. As a seed treatment, MST contains 7 different species of microorganisms. MST provides a beneficial zone of microbes surrounding the seed which form a symbiotic relationship with the plant’s roots. The amount of water and nutrients available to the plant increases with the use of Myco Seed Treat. An active rhizosphere contains beneficial fungi. These fungi act on and degrade organic materials and water insoluble compounds and store found nutrients in their hyphae and mycelia which reduces leaching. The fungi bind soil particles together and form stable aggregates therefore increasing water infiltration. This process actually increases water holding capacity by improving tilth and sequestering carbon. With MST’s micro-organisms and an initial food source, the microbes start to grow immediately at planting. The microbes in MST colonize the rhizosphere of each planted seed while the food sources and nutrients help the microbes get established. The crop benefits by the microorganisms freeing up nutrients - with an end result of better nutrient cycling. MST treatments increase Microbial Activity, Nutrient Availability, and Nutrient Cycling. • Beneficial micro-organisms • Increases microbial activity, nutrient availability, nutrient cycling • Improves water holding capacity All Crops General Rate: 4 - 12 oz per 100 lbs of seed (depending on seed size) *For other info & applications please visit www.douglasplanthealth.com.

Fertilizers

Fertilizers are inputs of plant nutrients which are essential to maintain plant growth and health. Plants which do not have adequate nutrition are more susceptible to environmental stressors such as drought, frost, wind as well as to opportunistic insects and pathogens. To add complexity to the matter, plants require different combinations of nutrients at different growth stages, leading to the kaleidoscope of fertilizing products on the market.

Fertilizers are available as granules (fast or slow-release), water soluble powders, or liquids, depending on the plant, growing environment, or application method. Liquid fertilizers can be chelated or complexed, allowing for a better shelf life and more efficient transfer of nutrition to the plant. While most liquid fertilizers are quick-release, some offer slow-release sources of nutrition. Liquid fertilizers can be applied directly to the soil or to the canopy, depending on the plant, season, environment, or growth stage. Fertilizing substances, which provide principally nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), and potassium (K), as well as macro- and micro-nutrients can be synthetically or naturally derived. Synthetic fertilizers are created as part of an industrial process, and often offer highly concentrated nutrition. Natural fertilizers are derived from plants, animals, composts, or other sources, and are often less concentrated nutritionally but often much healthier for soil and environment. Choosing the right fertilizer can be a complicated undertaking, and a good place to start is with a thorough understanding of your soil and your plant’s needs. The choice of fertilizer will depend on soil characteristics such as pH, CEC, and soil nutritional content, as well as the plant, growth stage, climate, application equipment, and environmental concerns, such as potential for runoff or leaching. You will want to reach out to your agronomist or technical sales representative to help you make the wisest choice. Choosing the right fertilizer will help you achieve better plant and soil health, higher yield, and more efficient production.

Micronutrients

Micro-nutrients are elements needed by plants and other living things in very small amounts.

While macronutrients (nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg), are required in large quantities, micronutrients are needed in small amounts but are still essential to plant health. The micro-nutrients include boron (B), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), cobalt, (Co) and chlorine (Cl). Each micro-nutrient has a distinct function within the plant, but they are all interrelated, and often depend on each other, macronutrients, and other compounds within the plant to function. Some micro-nutrient deficiencies are visually obvious, causing stunting, discoloration, and abnormal growth, but some may be elusive and cause the effect of a “hidden hunger”. This hidden hunger may put the plant into stress, making the plant more susceptible other environmental and biological impacts. When addressing the importance of recognizing the “hidden hunger” and why it occurs one needs to know that some micro-nutrients, although they may be picked up on a soil test, may not be truly available to the plant because of soil chemistry, poor soil structure or poor microbial activity. Micro-nutrient deficiencies can be addressed with ground or foliar applications. With ground applications, certain soil characteristics may cause the applied nutrition to become “bound up” and unavailable to plants. Because of this, often the most efficient method for providing micro-nutrients is through a foliar application. Foliar applications of micro-nutrients can be applied in a general treatment regime, or at specific times of the plant’s growth cycle, depending on the plant, season, or other needs. Understanding how to apply micronutrients efficiently depends on a thorough understanding of your soil, plant, environment, and other factors. Douglas Plant Health knows how to address your micro-nutrient issues with agronomy support, product support and research to connect all the functions of soil chemistry, soil structure and biology for the best return on your investment into plant health and overall profit.

BioPesticides

Biopesticides are plant-protection products which contain either living organisms (microbi-

al pesticides) or substances derived from living organisms and certain minerals (biochemical pesticides). Microbial pesticides are living bacteria, fungi, algae, or viruses which can control plant pests, pathogens, or weeds. Biochemical pesticides are substances derived from plants, animals, or microbes which serve the same functions. In both cases, biopesticides can target either specific pests or act in a more broad-spectrum fashion by helping plants upregulate their own defense systems. Both classes of biopesticides differ from conventional, synthetic pesticides in several crucial ways. Biopesticides are often significantly less toxic to plants, humans, and the environment than conventional pesticides, and rarely affect non-target organisms. Biopesticides are often effective in small quantities and degrade quickly in the environment, leading to less pollution. And importantly, when incorporated into Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs, biopesticides help to combat pesticide resistance and can sometimes lower conventional pesticide use or extend the useful lifetime of conventional chemistries. Because of their nature, choosing the right biopesticide requires a keen understanding of the problem, plant, soil, climate, and environmental factors. Microbial pesticides, as living things, require care in their use to ensure that the microbes survive and thrive. Biopesticides are most effective in a coordinated program which optimizes soil and environmental conditions for optimal health of both plant and microbes. Despite these complexities choosing the right biopesticide will aid in controlling pests, increase plant and soil health and maximize conventional pesticide inputs. Biopesticides may also decrease resistance to conventional pesticides possibly lengthening their lifespan. To maximize your investment, contact your agronomist or technical sales representative to work through your biopesticide and IPM options.

Companion Biological Fungicide WP Companion® Biological Fungicide is a broad spectrum biological fungicide [and bactericide] for the prevention, control or suppression of many soilborne and foliar diseases on many agricultural crops. Apply as a foliar spray or as a soil drench alone or in an alternating spray program with other EPA-registered crop protection products.

Companion® Wettable Powder contains the active ingredient Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain ENV503, a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium that quickly establishes beneficial colonies on the plant’s roots and leaves. It protects the roots from invading pathogens, stimulates healthier roots and improves nutrient uptake. Companion® can be used on all plant material and is most effective when applied prior to the onset of disease. Use in combination and/or rotation with chemical fungicides and bactericides to enhance disease control and reduce the occurrence of resistance. For use on field-grown agricultural crops including vegetables, herbs, small fruits, berries, and fruit trees as well as in greenhouse production and hydroponics. • • • • • •
