Featuring Robert DeWees What got you into your line of work? Are you involved in any other enterprises? After college at the University of Louisville and the Marine Corps, I started in pharmaceutical sales. I enjoyed selling and changing the behavior of my customers. Later, I learned to appreciate and enjoy the business aspect of what I did. I went back to school part time and received my MBA from DePaul University in Chicago and moved into sales management. In business school, I was exposed to business law. I found that I had something of a passion for the intersection of business and law and that led me back to law school and into private practice where a large part of my practice involves small business litigation (enforcing contracts, collections, bankruptcy). Issues with real property often come about in business dealings, so I also litigate real property matters (landlord/tenant, home owners’ associations, etc.). My law partner, Jeff McClain, also had varied path before becoming an attorney, working as an electrician and later in the music industry. We both worked for larger local firms before starting our practices. Talents, hobbies, family: I have a wife and two children, a girl who is 6 and a boy who is 2. We enjoy camping, going to the zoo, bike riding, and other outdoor activities. Jeff has a wife and a daughter, age 3. Typical kinds of services you provide: My law partner, Jeff McClain, has a large immigration practice and was recently named by Louisville Magazine as one of the top immigration attorneys in Louisville. In addition to immigration (both employer and individual), he handles business transactional matters and criminal defense. Part of the immigration practice includes I-9 audits ensuring that employers are compliant with applicable federal law as it pertains to employment eligibility verification. This is an area in which many employers are inadvertently non-compliant which can generate substantial fines and sometimes criminal charges.

litigation (contract disputes, collections), bankruptcy, and divorce. I am licensed to practice law in Kentucky and Indiana. Any special features that are unique to your business? My law partner and our staff are all fluent in Spanish. I try to speak Spanish. How far reaching is your business? My practice is generally based in Louisville and the surrounding Kentucky and Indiana counties. My partner, Jeff McClain, has an international practice, representing people and business in the U.S. Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. How do you think NELBA will help you in your profession and as an individual? Not only is NELBA helpful in getting clients, but NELBA, by putting us in contact with other small business people, helps us become better business people. A small law firm has the same basic business problems that a printer, a restaurant, and any other small business has. It is very helpful to see how my colleagues in other industries are handling these issues. Anything else you would like the readers to know about you or your business? My law partner and I realize that what the small business person needs in an attorney is someone who is responsive to his or her needs, skilled, and affordable. We strive be that law firm. Robert W. DeWees III Attorney at Law MCCLAIN DEWEES, PLLC 6008 Brownsboro Park Boulevard, Suite H Louisville, Kentucky 40207 Tel: 502.749.2388 Fax: 888.779.7428

My practice is a general civil litigation practice, with significant areas in real property litigation (landlord/ tenant and homeowners’ associations), small business 4

What’s New In NELBA Westport Middle School – Success in the Making! The Westport Debate Team competed in the Middle School Debate League Final at Spalding University on March 30. After receiving many compliments about their preparation, personality, and passion, the team came in second place and will compete against a debate team in Leeds, United Kingdom through a simulcast before the end of the school year. The Westport Math Department has been representing the district in PD360, which is filming of an 8th grade math model to use nationwide as teachers begin to implement the new Common Core Standards. The Westport Orchestra received straight Distinguished ratings at KMEA. Ms. Drake, our new orchestra instructor, is following in the footsteps of previous instructors by continuing the tradition of excellence. Westport Orchestra has earned Distinguished ratings at the KMEA large group contest eight out of the last twelve years, and consecutively from 2008 to 2012. The orchestra also has a student that is a member of the Louisville Youth Orchestra! The Westport Band and Chorus also represented well at KMEA with Proficient ratings. Amber Lindsey, a Westport Montessori student, was recently accepted to be published in the Creative Communications Spring 2012 anthology! This writing competition recognizes young writers with great talent in the art of writing. She wrote an essay entitled “The Land of the Lost” where she analyzed the theme that you can’t lose something that you never had. We appreciate her Language Arts teacher, Paige Houston, for making opportunities like this available to her students! Last year the 7th and 8th grade Japanese classes submitted a video about Westport (in Japanese!) to the state Japanese Language Festival held in Calloway County. We were the only middle school in the entire state to enter the competition. This year four eighth grade students (Arnazia Matlock, Prince Owens, Megan Kapur, and Martimique Dorsey) came back for a second year of Japanese and have been doing the same challenging assignments that are given to high school students. They will be able to enroll in a Japanese 2 class *as freshmen* at Eastern, Ballard, or Atherton High School next year. Westport athletic teams have enjoyed much success this year! Our baseball team is currently undefeated. After an extremely successful football season, our football coach, Phillips Hawkins, and two of his players represented Kentucky in the FBU National Tournament. Lamarius KinslowYarbrough, All-State Defensive End, led the Kentucky team with 6 sacks and 20 tackles during tournament. Aubrey Larue, All American Running Back, was selected to play on Kentucky team as well. Kentucky finished 3rd in National

Championship. Aubrey rushed for over 500 yards in the 5 games of tournament and had 9 touchdowns. We are extremely proud of Mr. Hawkins for not only leading our Westport team to a winning season, but also for representing Kentucky on the national stage! Kentucky team beat Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Massachusetts, and lost in SemiFinals to Oregon. Finally, the Westport Montessori Program received the honor of being voted WLKY’s Best School Crib! We are proud of the growth and accomplishments of our staff and students, and look forward to the bright future we see for Westport Middle School! Staci Eddleman, Ed.D.
