She said classes are one hour and are an all encompassing full body workout. “It has a bit of a cardio component to it but it is not like a high impact aerobics class. It is really about muscle engagement and how you use those muscles. It is a really good program to supplement with a cardio program. You will get muscle definition and lengthening of your muscles.” Carl said ballet barre based workouts have been toning and shaping celebrity bodies for years and now it is available for everyone. “It started with the celebrity culture. Various trainers adapted programs for their famous clients who want the ballerina body... long and lean,” she noted. Working ballet exercises into a regime doesn’t require ballet slippers... you can go barefoot or wear socks. Carl said stretching is a big part of the class with the barre being used as support and a

tool for stretching. “It is like a ballet class put into a fitness format and is set to upbeat not classical music.” If you want to step up to the barre and challenge yourself Carl is offering complimentary classes on Monday, January 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 21 from 10 to 11 a.m., Friday, January 23 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and on January 24 she is adding a special Saturday class from 11 a.m. until noon. ne of the West Coast’s most exciting new musical voices will be presenting a collection of unique jazz arrangements at the McMillan Arts Centre (MAC) January 16. The Erika Phillips Quartet was originally scheduled for the JAZZ at the MAC concert series last August but was unable to appear when the Island Highway was shut down due to a serious car crash. The much-anticipated jazz group based in Nanaimo features the rich, soulful vocals of singer, composer and arranger Erika Phillips. Phillips is a graduate of Vancouver Island University’s Bachelor of Jazz program, where she studied under Canadian jazz icons such as Brad Turner, Ken Lister, Pat Coleman, and Bryan Stovell. Her gorgeous vocals, original compositions and updated standards set her and her talented band mates apart. Performing along with Phillips are Rob Wilkinson on piano, Andrew Cullen on bass and Jesse McNeill on drums. While the quartet performs mainly original songs, Phillips said she also likes to put her own spin on original arrangements of jazz standards and gifted composer and lyricist Cole Porter is at the top of her list of favourites. “I have always loved his writing and I sing Old Devil Moon. It is a very old standard but I do an updated version of it,” she stated. Phillips said she likes to search out songs that are a bit less known and make them her own. “There are some hidden gems if you dig a little deeper. I bring the obscure ones out and update them and introduce them to people. We like to blend a lot of different styles and that is what makes us unique.”

The band’s fresh new take on traditional favourites, along with the sensitive playing of some of the Island’s most skilled young jazz artists, gives the quartet a true voice of its own. Since its formation in 2010, the Erika Phillips Quartet has been constantly developing an ever-expanding repertoire of original compositions and arrangements. Drawing on their diverse musical backgrounds members of the group have developed a unique sound that blends traditional jazz elements with blues, funk, Latin, and world music influences. With an award-winning EP There Goes Love under their belt, a full-length CD of all original compositions in production stages, and more new tunes being added all the time, the Erika Phillips Quartet continues to grow musically. Phillips who is also an accomplished pianist said she finds inspiration for her work in a wide range of musical styles, including jazz, blues, classical and contemporary salsa music. She and her husband who is the sound engineer for the band met while attending music classes at VIU. The two also teach salsa dancing and she said there are plans in the future for a salsa band, … so stay tuned. Tickets for the January 16 show at 7 p.m. are $15 and $12 for OCAC members and are available at the McMillan Arts Centre, 133 McMillan Street in Parksville. FOR MORE INFORMATION

Discovery Community College Real story, real success. Marc has wanted to be a nurse since he was a teenager. When he was in his mid 20’s (late 80’s, early 90’s) living back east, he called around interested in Health Care and was turned away as, at that time, they had just laid off 50006000 Health Care workers. For the next 2 decades, Marc was selfemployed in the public service sector, worked in manufacturing and finally construction, until the late 2000’s when the recession hit. In 2009, at the age of 45, Marc decided it was time to re-visit his dream. He started with the HCA program at DCC and found employment right away between a local private seniors home, private surgical unit and the hospital. In 2011, Marc decided to take it one step further and came back to DCC to take the Practical Nurse Access Program (shortened track for people who are already HCA’s). Marc graduated in 2012 and found employment right away. Today, Marc is employed full time at New Horizons in Campbell River as a Practical Nurse. Marc is living his “teenage dream” and says “I don’t call it work, I am doing what I want to do, it is my passion, it is a dream come true” - Marc Rondeau, Aug 27, 2014
