Supplier Scoop

Chevy’s Silverado has potential for some types of towing duties.

Minimizing Range Anxiety

While most of the EVs we checked out at Work Truck Week had fairly limited range, Chevy’s 2024 Silverado EV has an expected 400-mile range on a full charge. While the truck is not quite suitable for light-duty commercial tow operators, with that mileage figure it might work as a roadside service rig for jumping batteries (even for other EVs) or tire changes. Two versions will be available, the RST First Edition and the fleet-oriented WT model. With 510 hp and 615 lb/ft of torque, the WT will offer 8,000 pounds of towing and 1,200 pounds of payload. After the initial launch of this commercial pickup, Chevrolet will later introduce a fleet model with up to 20,000 pounds max trailering with the max tow package. So stay tuned for a possible commercial towing application. Both the RST and WT feature public DC fast-charging capabilities of up to 350kW, enabling approximately 100 miles of range to be added in 10 minutes based on GM estimates. For roadside service, the Silverado EV is also capable of charging another EV using an optional accessory charge cord. WT customers also have access to Ultium Charge 360 Fleet Service, which offers comprehensive charging solutions for businesses, whether drivers take their vehicles home or return to a central depot. Customizable first-row storage on both RST and WT models makes the most of the interior space, provid38 • June 2022 | Towman.com
