A Brief comparison between Geodesic Dome and Hylozoic Ground
The Geodesic Dome was designed by Buck Minster Fuller in 1976, which was an early example of improvement of human shelter. And the Hylozoic Ground was designed by Philip Beesley in 2010. Although there is 50 years difference between the two designs, the architects both show the attitude to design futuring. The basic idea of Geodesic Dome was to solve the problem of serious housing shortage after war. Inspired by natural gravity and spider net, Fuller applied modern technologies and new materials to build a more comfortable and efficient shelter for a larger population within smaller budget. However, Fuller regarded the Geodesic Dome only as a semi-finished product as it still exists several installing difficulties and in-house problems. The design of Geodesic Dome can be described as an innovation of human habitation. First reading pointed out that Design Futuring adopt the metod of adding mobilization and design intelligence. Therefore, the Geodesic Dome can be seen as an approach to future design, which is light-weight and moveable although it is uncompleted.
To compare, Hylozoic Ground will be analysed as a new 21st century design. The construction applied transparent acrylic meshwork covered by interactive mechanical fronds, filters, and whiskers. This design also adopted contemporary new technology, digital fabrication. Different from Geodesic Dome which was designed to solve population problem, the Hylozoic Ground was more likely to be an experience to explore contemporary wilderness. This design idea was called speculation design, which focus more on creating spaces for discussion as well as debating multiple ways of existing, also encouraging people’s imaginations (reading 2). If Geodesic Dome can be described as an innovation of human habitation, the Hylozoic Ground would be the pioneer of a “living” structure. This is because the artificial sensor can react to human presence and environments, which open up a new method of approaching future designing.
Dolphin Embassy: the new ecological approach to design futuring
The Dolphin Embassy was designed by Ant Farm in 1974, which was a famous research project and never been built due to the insufficient fund after the ant farm dissolved. The overall idea of this project attempted to analyze the relationship and communication between human being and dolphins. To find the way of co-existing of human being and dolphins, the architects spent half a year doing research of dolphins. The Dolphin Embassy incorporated ecological theory. It was reported that, in the decade of the 1980â€™s, new interfaces with nature was taken into consideration. This is because with the rapid growing population, more humanâ€™s inhabitation would be discovered not only on the flat earth but closer to the nature without damaging. Although the project was unbuilt, it still contributed to future design as it expands more future possibilities. The design method can be summarized as a probable design, which defines what is likely to happen in the future (reading 2). Since before, numerous scientists believed other creatures in the world like dolphins and mammal have intelligence which is equal to humans. Therefore, the Dolphin Embassy applied the scientific exploration to architecture, which is a revolutionary process in design futuring.
To analyze the design, the proposal was to create a space for intelligent sea and land animals to communicate. Ant Farm designed the Dolphin Embassy as a floating system on the ocean. The plan is in triangle shape with two pods and one galley at the three points, and a cetacean pool in the middle. In this way, both species are able to communicate without isolation. Unlike in the past, human have own colonies, the new attitude to a co-evolution of human and animals need to be carried on in the future. Although the budgets of this design is extremely high contemporary, designers are believed to find a more efficient way to achieve this harmonious co-existing idea in the future.
