May 2011 East Bethesda Schools Update by Monica Hayes EBCA will provide a complete update on schools at the May General Membership meeting. Please also check the EBCA local education webpage for ongoing and up-to-date information on the Elementary boundary study and new Middle School site. May 2011 East Bethesda Schools Update cont. from p1 Schools (MCPS) has stated that reassignments will likely be effective in 2015 at the earliest. MCPS divided the service areas for the four schools into 26 zones to build options. Zone boundaries were determined by factors such as school walk areas, major roadways, stream beds, and nothrough streets. East Bethesda is in two zones divided at the major no-through point in our community, with Chestnut Street and south in one zone, and South Chelsea Lane and north (Glenbrook Village) in another zone. MCPS has developed two possible Boundary Change Options listed on the EBCA website. Additional options may be developed. The committee developed criteria to evaluate boundary change options and implementation issues to consider. MCPS has developed information on the impact on enrollment, school utilization, and demographics of options. The committee will not vote on or rank options; they evaluate the options against the criteria. The final Committee Report to the superintendent and Board of Education (BOE) will be published in June 2011. The BOE will make a decision on boundaries and additions by the end of November 2011. See the EBCA website for more information, complete timelines, and information on how you can participate. A new middle school is also being planned for the B-CC cluster to address over-utilization at Westland Middle School, and to allow CC and NCC elementary schools to be reorganized from Grades 3-6 to Grades 3-5. See the EBCA webpage for the site selection final report and Middle School timelines.

President cont. from p1 actively participate in its success. Our elections for new officers is coming up on May 18th. Please contact Kurt Zimmermann at if you would like to run for a position. You can find a list of executive positions on our website. If an elected position is not your cup of tea, then please consider volunteering for one of the many committee chairman positions. This is an excellent opportunity to meet new neighbors and learn about what is going on around our community. Until next time, Greg Volz n
