TAMIL INSCRIPTIONS ON COINS In the present day, Sri Lanka and Singapore are the only countries which release coins with Tamil inscriptions. These nations are releasing Tamil scripted coins (TSC) to respect the feelings of the local Tamilians living there. Going with the current trend, these TSCs will perish from Sri Lanka in the near future. This can be concluded from the happenings based on the following incident: Earlier, the Tamil text on the cash notes was visible to naked eye. Cut to the present day scenario, it can be read only when seen through a magnifying glass. This trend may continue with coins too. At the moment, India which has a 7 Crore Tamil population has no coin with Tamil script over it. The only exception is the recently released five rupee coin on the occasion of Anna centenary year with Annadurai’s signature engraved on it. On the flip side, how many of us noticed it as an issue of concern? Under these circumstances, what ‘TAMIL INSCRIPTION ON COINS’ refer to, is a subject many couldn’t have a clear perception. TSC means, the coins which date back to1000s of years ago, through till the era of the British rule in India. Generally, the texts on these coins indicate either the value of currency or the name of the King. Tamil script on coins? It is a surprise to know. World’s oldest coins have only 3 languages on them a. Greek b. Chinese c. Tamil In spite of that, Tamil script varies from that on the coins to present day’s script. We were ignorant about this for long, which is a reason; we are still lagging in numismatics (study of coins). World historians say that till 1984, ancient Tamils didn’t use coins and they used to trade only through barter system; implying that Tamil ancient society was not an educated society and not well trained. In 1984, a coin was found in the name of King Pandiar Puvvelthi belonging to the period before Christ. Through this it is proved that Tamil is one of the oldest and earliest civilizations. Language on these coins is in old Tamil script named Tamil Brahmi. After the discovery of that coin, many such TSCs were found. We shall look at them in the coming editions. by Mannar Mannan

PRE-CONCEPTION TO 1ST TRIMESTER HEALTH IS WEALTH Indeed staying healthy is a vital part of life itself, whether you want to get pregnant or not, simple tips to stay healthy. DIET • A healthy diet is important for both partner fertility and for maintaining a healthy pregnancy. • Elimination four months before you start trying to conceive will help to correct the nutritional deficiencies. Both of you may have protein rich foods such as chicken, fish and pulses. • Drink 8 glasses of water a day, instead of tea and coffee. Extensive studies have also shown that folic acid, found naturally in citrus fruit, green leafy vegetables should be consumed to reduce the risk of neural tube defects, such a spina bifida. • A daily supplement of 400 mg of folic acid should be taken for at until the 12th week of pregnancy. If you are taking anticonvulsant medication, are diabetic or have previously had a baby with spinal defects, and then a larger dose of folic acid (5mg per day) is recommended. This should be taken for 3 months BEFORE conception and for 3 months after conception. This medication has no side effects and is safe, so it is better to take it for some time as it may be difficult to plan the pregnancy very precisely. • In general, any medication that you need for your general health should be continued (for instance, if you have epilepsy, your anti – epileptic medication should be continued). The exact dose and type of medication should be reviewed by an expert. WEIGHT Being significantly under or over weight can affect your fertility and cause complications in pregnancy. If you are underweight, there is a risk that your baby will be small and obesity is linked to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, which results in an ovulation and thus, difficulty in conceiving, develop Diabetes in pregnancy or High blood pressure during pregnancy. Regular exercise, such a brisk walking, will get you fit before conception and help your body cope better with the demands of pregnancy. STRESS Make sure you have plenty of rest and relaxation and try to avoid high stress levels. Too much stress can upset sex under stress more likely to have poor sperm quality and may suffer from premature ejaculation or have problems. WHEN DID THE PREGNANCY HAPPEN? To become pregnant an egg needs to be released from ovaries. That is called ovulation. Ovulation occurs 14 days after the first day of your last period.

y’s tummy... Forever in her heart... An egg lives for about 12 to 24 hours after it is released. A sperm must fertilize the egg within this period for pregnancy to occur. WHEN TO DO PREGNANCY TEST? Pregnancy test can be done from the first day of the missed period, if the cycles are regular. If not sure when the next period is due, pregnancy test can be done 21 days after the unprotected sex. WHAT IS BEING TESTED IN PREGNANCY TEST? Pregnancy test, check for the presence of the pregnancy hormone, human chorionic gonadotropins (HCG) in the urine. As fertilized egg starts growing, it secrets the hormone. Around two weeks after you conceive, there is enough HCG for most pregnant tests to detect it. Around seven days after you conceive, HCG might be noticeable in urine. But the concentration is achieved after 14 days to give positive urine pregnancy test. A positive result is almost certainly correct. If pregnancy test is positive on the first day of your missed period, it’s probably conception occurred 2 weeks back. Due date is calculated by adding 7 days and 9 months to your last menstrual period provided your period is regular and once in 28 day cycle. Blood test is more accurate. But it will be used in special situation. SYMPTOMS OF PREGNANCY The onset and degree of pregnancy symptoms vary within women. The onset of symptoms within days to few weeks and few may not have any symptoms at all. We will go through each symptom now. Continued in next issue…

TRADE MARKS LAW A tricky affair to protect uniqueness
The first Indian Trademarks Act was passed in 1940; this corresponded with the English Trademarks Act. There was an increasing need for more protection of Trademarks due to major growth in Trade and Commerce. This led to the replacement of this act as the Trademark and Merchandise Act, 1958. This act was further amended as Trade Marks Act, 1999 to enable easy registration and better protection of trademarks and to prevent fraud.
A Trade Mark is a visual symbol in the form of a word , a device ,or a label applied to articles of commerce with a view to indicate to the purchasing public; that, it is a good manufactured or other wise dealt in by a particular person as distinguished from similar goods dealt or manufactured by other persons. Registration A Trade Mark can be registered in the Trade Mark Registry at five places in India i.e Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Ahmedabad .The application for registration of trade mark is filed first. The application is then examined for any conflicting marks, after which a hearing is called for and the trade mark is published in the Trade Mark Journal. After a period of three months if there is no opposition, the Trade Mark proceeds for registration.
Under modern business conditions, a trade mark performs four functions: • It identifies the goods or services and its origin • It guarantees its unchanged quality • It advertises the goods/services • It creates an image for the goods/services
Term of registration of a trademark is ten years, which may be renewed for a further period of ten years on payment of prescribed renewal fees. Nonuser of a registered trademark for a continuous period of five years is a ground for cancellation of registration of such trademark at the behest of any aggrieved party.
The registration of a trade mark confers upon the owner the exclusive right to the use of the registered trade mark, by using the symbol (R) in relation to the goods or services in respect of which the mark is registered and as well seek the relief of infringement in appropriate courts in the country. The exclusive right is however subject to any conditions entered on the register such as limitation of area of use etc. Further, when two or more persons register identical or nearly similar mark, due to special circumstances such exclusive right would not operate against each other.
REMEDIES FOR INFRINGEMENT AND PASSING - OFF Two types of remedies are available to the owner of a trademark for unauthorized use of his or her mark or its imitation by a third party. These remedies are: • an action for infringement’ in case of a registered trademark; and • an action for passing off’ in the case of an unregistered trademark While the former is a statutory remedy, the latter is a common law remedy. In an action involving infringement or passing off, a court may grant relief of injunction and/or monetary compensation for damages for loss of business and/or confiscation/destruction of infringing labels and tags etc. Conclusion The famous American historian and educator Daniel J Boorstein quotes “An image is simply not a trademark, a design, a slogan or an easily remembered picture. It is a studiously crafted personality profile of an individual, institution, corporation, product or service” .So, every mark denotes an individualistic persona that has to be respected and the goodwill maintained. “Hence know your rights and protect your Rights” Author: Dr.Nirmalatha Ramesh Kanna Phd Law Send in any of your queries related to Law and get the clarifications published in Doorstep. email@example.com 044-23631984

Restoring historic Gingee fort
t was memorable that how our sightseeing trip to historic Gingee fort, changed to a debris and strewn clearing day, around the dilapidated temple and its ruins. As we stood at the foot of the impressive and steep monolithic rock outcrop with the fort at the hilltop, the long history that went before the hill came to our mind. Starting from the Jains who used to live around the hill from before the Christian era and the Pallavas, the Cholas, the Hoysalas, the Vijayanagar Kings, the Nayaks (Marathas), the Mughals, the French and the British who followed them in the region ignites inside your memory. The Gingee Fort is always however identified with the heroic Raja Thesing, a Rajput Satrap of the Mughals from Bundelkhand, who rebelled and was killed in battle with the Mughals heroically leaving his Rani to commit Suttee (sati). The ruins of the fort with the handiwork of several dynasties of Hindu, Mughal and foreign rulers showed us the tempo- wariness of all power. The visit to the hill top fort and back in excruciating heat was however followed by a heavenly dip in a spacious country well followed by a heavy lunch.

On reaching the Devanoor temple, we learnt that our temple work has to be postponed to the next day as that day being Chitra Pournami, the local villagers will be assembling for their pongal ceremony and after evening puja will have a night-long utsavam, to which all of us were invited. After visiting the temple sanctum with a large Siva Lingam, we retired to a nearby school for rest from the hot afternoon sun. In the evening a few of us visited the temple again to see the puja ceremony in progress and returned for dinner and retiring for sleep under the open sky on the school playground. The temple work started in right earnest from 6:30 am the next day morning onwards with all the teammembers lending hand in loosening the debris with crowbars, picks and shovels and transferring the loosened debris in metal basins along a human chain to be thrown beyond the area of ruins, so that the space around the temple can be cleared of all debris for future repair, reconstruction and renovation work by experts. After a late breakfast the work ended around noon and the team retired for a quick bath. And with that when we were returning back to Chennai, we were satisfied that we have contributed towards preserving our country’s history – for the very thing we pride ourselves on is buried beneath the rubble of our own negligence.
