International Door & Operator Industry™

Floyd Phelps began working as a door technician for Crawford Door, Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1958. He was the very first full-time employee hired by RT and Tancil Horne (Tancil Horne later became president of DODA). This year he celebrates 50 years as a key employee of the company. Phelps has installed virtually every type of product the company has handled including sectional doors (residential and commercial), rolling steel, sliding doors, hurricane shutters, loading dock equipment, electric and hydraulic door openers and awnings. He has constructed sliding fire doors, cut glass for wood and steel doors, and built high-lift track from scratch. For most of his career, he used manual tools like a speed handle, ratchet wrench, and a hammer driven masonry chisel. In the days preceding OSHA, he sometimes used scaffolding with a ladder placed on top, and preferred carrying his tools in his hip pockets. No tool belt for him! Standard tools included a folding stick ruler, and a block of paraffin wax for lubricating jambs. In recent years, Phelps has become the company resource for techniciangenerated questions. Referred to as the firm’s “Shell Answer Man”, he is extremely helpful to the installers and has trained almost all of the company’s core technicians. In his spare time, Phelps is a beekeeper. As a matter of fact, people from all around call him if they have a swarm of bees to catch.
