YOURS MAGAZINE

Hello Members Welcome to the Autumn edition of YOURS. Since my last report to you via this column Christmas and New Year have come and gone, however I can still wish you good health, happiness, and prosperity as we move into 2021. Since December, restrictions inside our club have continued to change under the direction of NSW Health. At the time of writing this I am pleased to let you know that the capacity of 300 has increased and entertainment has resumed. Members now only need to wear face masks inside gaming areas. DOOLEYS Board supports Management in implementing these measures as recommended by NSW Health.

FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN Hello Members Welcome to the Autumn edition of YOURS.

I would like to acknowledge our CEO David Mantle and his Senior Management Team and Staff in the professional manner with which they have conducted the business around COVID-19. From the management of members entering our club sites, to ensuring their comfort around restrictions in movement within our club rooms, including the constant cleaning of all high touch surfaces to ensure they are COVID clear. This is an expensive exercise but necessary to ensure the health of all persons within our club sites. I would like to thank members who supported the club over the Christmas New Year period and in particular those members who have been strong supporters of the club since COVID-19 entered our lives way back in March 2020. Without this member support, our club would be a very different place. We understand that some members, particularly our older members are reluctant to venture out to our club sites during this pandemic, and that’s understandable and we welcome them back when they are comfortable in doing so.

FROM THE BOARDROOM

At the November Board Meeting Board Members again elected me as Chair of the Board for the 2020/21 period. I thank my colleagues for the confidence they place in me to lead the board during this critical period of the club’s history. Kevin Morgan was again elected as Vice Chair and together with our Board colleagues we will endeavor to bring home the Board’s strategic plan for 2021. The road ahead will be “bumpy” with uncertainly around the economic climate and strict operating conditions placed on clubs around COVID-19. Despite those deterrents, your Board considers that an anticipated start date in early 2022 is a probability for stage 1 of the Concourse of Lidcombe project. Our determination and ability to press ahead with this start date validates the extensive due diligence and planning carried out by the club.

YOURS | MARCH – MAY 2021

May I remind members that an election for three Board positions will be called for later in 2021.Nominations will open on 23 August 2021 and close on 6 September 2021.There are three current Board Members retiring and are eligible for re-election. Directors Terry Kenny, Kevin Morgan, and Michael Renshaw will contest the election if further nominations are received. I urge members to exercise your right and vote if an election is called. The full profile of the three retiring directors will appear in the Winter edition of YOURS. The Board is not in a position to endorse any candidate or potential candidate.

ANZAC DAY 2021

Members would be aware that this year’s ANZAC Day is again an important occasion to commemorate the sacrifice of our service men and women of our armed forces past and present who have served and those who are still serving, and especially those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defence of what we stand for. 2021 is an important year as we commemorate the 55th anniversary of the battle of Long Tan in Vietnam on 18 August 1966. The battle was Australia’s most costly single battle of the war where 108 men cut off and outnumbered by at least ten to one withstood massed Viet Cong attacks for three hours inflecting heavy losses on the enemy. Eighteen Australian soldiers were killed and 24 wounded. Eleven of the dead were National Servicemen and seven were Regular Army soldiers, their average age was 21 years. Australia’s military involvement lasted almost 11years from July 1962 to June 1973. More than 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam, and more than 500 died. The Lidcombe RSL Sub Branch will conduct the ANZAC Dawn Service at the Cenotaph in Remembrance Park Lidcombe and later in the day an ANZAC Commemoration Service will be conducted at DOOLEYS Regents Park Sports Club for all Members and visitors to attend. Both services will be conducted under strict COVID-19 regulations. I urge members to support the RSL in commemorating these important occasions. As Easter fall within this Autumn Edition, may I wish you all a safe and Happy Easter. In the meantime please enjoy the facilities of your club. Best wishes to you all, and stay safesee you around the club.

John Munce Chairman

YOURS MAGAZINE

Happy 2021 to all members and families. At the time of writing, I am pleased to advise that your Clubs are slowly getting back to normal with the most recent easing of COVID restrictions. Fingers crossed for a more certain and positive 2021 after such a tumultuous 2020.

and we invite all members and guests to come along to either of these services. With COVID restrictions changing and attendance numbers potentially capped, we will be live streaming the service via the DOOLEYS Clubs Facebook page to ensure members can be involved.

MEMBER NOTICE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING (EGM)

DOOLEYS IN THE COMMUNITY

In summary, the Club received an unsolicited offer to purchase the site which subject to member approval, will be accepted.

Since 2017, DOOLEYS has supported St Vincent De Paul's Sydney Night patrol service through donations and the volunteering efforts of our people. While at this time we aren't able to physically volunteer, our commitment to donate continues. St Vincent De Paul are seeking support with demands increasing as a result of the Covid environment. See Page 19 for more information.

An EGM will be conducted to seek member approval for the sale of the Waterview Club site at Silverwater. A detailed information pack will be sent to all members outlining the rationale and proposed financial arrangements.

FROM YOUR CEO Welcome to the Autumn edition of YOURS.

The plan is to then relocate the Club license to a new site within Olympic Park, where there is an expanding membership and population. The second matter is a proposed amalgamation with NSW Leagues Club, with a view to “joining forces” within Olympic Park precinct. Your board has unanimously recommended both items of business however both are subject to member approval. Lidcombe Update Members will be aware that the DA for Stage 1 at Lidcombe has been approved. Detailed plans and documentation are now underway for a tender process later this year. We are still hopeful that there may be some stie works undertaken in 2021. More information will be forthcoming, and members are urged to keep up to date on the Clubs development website. www.concourseatlidcombe.com.au

We are proud to continue our sponsorship with the Youth Development Program, Max Potential for both the Cumberland and Parramatta districts. Good luck to the students participating in 2021 - we are excited to see your personal development and projects come to fruition.

Until the next edition, please enjoy your Clubs.

David Mantle Chief Executive officer

Regents Park Masterplan This continues to progress, albeit very very slowly. The Club was required to undergo a “Design Excellence Panel” review with a view to maintaining the scale of the plans. Without the scale, the plan is not viable. This design excellence process will take a few months and members will be updated if and when there is any news. Anzac Day On April 25, we stop to remember those service men and women who have served lost their lives in wars, conflict, and peacekeeping operations. DOOLEYS will be hosting two local Anzac Day services (5am Dawn Service at Remembrance Park, Lidcombe and 1pm Service at DOOLEYS Regents Park Sports Club)

CLUB CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE As I write this message, I reflect on the year we have left. 2020 started with many areas of our continent still facing ragging bush fires. It was not long before we had a new challenge to deal with, Covid-19. By the end of the year, there were 4900 confirmed cases and over 50 deaths in NSW. This virus has disrupted the lives and livelihood of many individuals and families in our community. It is only by following the rules and caring about those around us that we can get through this pandemic. On 8 December 2020, Pope Francis declared a Year of St Joseph in honour of the 150th anniversary of the saint’s proclamation as patron of the Universal Church. The decree said that Francis had established a Year of St Joseph so that “every member of the faithful, following his example, may strengthen their life of faith daily in the complete fulfillment of God’s will”. In addition to the decree, Francis issued an apostolic letter dedicated to the foster father of Jesus. The Pope explained in the letter, titled Patris Corde (“With a father’s heart”), that he wanted to share some “personal reflections” on the spouse of Blessed Virgin Mary.

“My desire to do so increased during these months of pandemic,” he said, noting that many people had made hidden sacrifices during the crisis in order to protect others. “Each of us can discover in Joseph – the man who goes unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden presence – an intercessor, a support and a guide in times of trouble,” he wrote. “St Joseph reminds us that those who appear hidden or in the shadows can play an incomparable role in the history of salvation.” (Source CNA) We can celebrate St Joseph on his Feast Day on the 19 March 2021. This year, Holy Week starts with Palm Sunday on the 28 March and ends with the Resurrection of our Lord on Easter Sunday, 4 April 2021. Two events in May are the Ascension of the Lord on 16 May and Pentecost Sunday on 23 May 2021. Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ. In these troubling times the Holy Spirit is our hope for the future as well. May I wish you all a Happy and Holy Easter Fr. Eduardo Orilla Club Chaplain

ccording to the latest Australian census data in 2016, Cumberland local government area has the fourth highest number of homeless persons across Australia.

With COVID-19, this need has only dramatically increased.

Since 2017, DOOLEYS has been providing monthly donations towards St Vincent de Paul’s Sydney Night Patrol service. DOOLEYS support goes directly towards providing a meal, hot drink, blanket, toiletries, referrals, and most importantly companionship to the most vulnerable and at risk of homelessness. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has seen demand for the service almost double, servicing many new clients including young families and the elderly who travel from all across Sydney. St Vincent de Paul Society are always looking for donations – financial or goods – to support this initiative. Particularly supporting those from Cumberland. Volunteering opportunities are also under review due to COVID-19 and will be launched shortly. If you are interested in supporting this service, particularly in Western Sydney, please contact Josie Charbel josie.charbel@vinnies.org.au or 0490 282 121.
