uring the course of my travels I have visited virtually every corner on Earth, yet Huka Lodge, on the banks of the Waikato River, took me by total surprise with its sheer presence. Recognising this as one of the world’s few remaining gems, and having fallen in love with not only the Lodge but also the North Island’s volcanic plateau, was just the beginning. In 1984 we committed to the renaissance of Huka Lodge and its once famous hospitality. Since then, our guests have experienced service designed to be complete yet unobtrusive, accommodation and cuisine exceeding every expectation. Huka Lodge now has proudly taken its place as one of the world’s finest retreats, its reputation and awards richly deserved.

Enter through the gates of Huka Lodge and leave the real world behind. Guests journey the length of the drive, encounter the parklike grounds, and feel the peace and tranquillity envelop them. That first glimpse of the deep turquoise waters of the Waikato River brings further affirmation of the potential that awaits.

Experience crisp clear air, birdsong, dew on the forest floor, 17 acres of perfect peace and quiet and an attentiveness to our guests as palpable as the force of the mighty river itself.

Trophy Room

he main Lodge building draws guests like bees to honey. Come the evening, candles are lit, lights dimmed and the drinks set out. n the 1920s, Irishman Alan Pye, discovered the incredible fly fishing on the reaches of the Waikato River and realised his dream to build a fishing lodge. Before long, the fame of Huka Lodge had spread to every corner of the fly fishing world. As its reputation spread the Lodge attracted such famous anglers as HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother; Charles Lindbergh; James A. Mitchener (who wrote part of Return to Paradise there) as well as many famous film stars and public figures of the time. Today the clientele and the aura of Huka Lodge are much the same. Though the standards of the original accommodation have changed dramatically, the spirit of its hospitality remains.
