The concept for Nature’s Eye is to enjoy the site without the disturbance of the building. Nature’s Eye emerges from the site with its glazing near the berm. The shape of the building is organic, to tune in with its organic surroundings. By doing so, the green roof merges one with the berm and the site, to allow a slow and steady decline to enjoy a moment of stasis of the beautiful greenery. The structure of Nature’s Eye was heavily inspired by nature through orb spider webs and the skeleton of a snake. Wooden pathways connect different locations of the site, to enjoy its many views. The embed greenhouse is open to the public and away from the building to engage visitors to move throughout the site. Rammed earth walls were used to educate the public about vernacular construction methods and to give a sense of being underground.

Life is a journey with many paths to follow, and in these different paths you tend to experience stressful and fulfilling moments. Throughout these experiences you start formulating a story of your own, by the end of your life. Life is full of vibrations and can be found everywhere including in yourself; a heartbeat. The connection between the experiences and vibration of life can be expressed through compression and expansion. Expressed through spatial features, movement throughout the building and the facade, was the concept for the building.

The Net Zero College Park (NZCP) mission is to form a headquarters to inform area residents to see, understand and integrate sustainable living strategies into their homes and businesses. The NZCP will educate and support residents and businesses with work spaces and meeting spaces, to serve the community and enhance equity centered environmental stewardship to each individual. The new headquarters hopes to be the bridge between the City of College Park, the Sustainability Division of Prince George’s County, and the Office of Sustainability at the University of Maryland while supporting existing sustainability programs within the city, county and state.

Weaving Complex

The idea was to weave homes and green spaces together to engage interactions within the community. Jenga like massings and interlocking of the fingers were the drive to this design. The jenga like approach allowed for cave like outdoor spaces and a light well located in the center of the building. The light well also provides natural ventilation into the green spaces. The green spaces provide edible vegetation and open spaces for outdoor activities. Weaving takes place at the edge of the building with the push and pull of the facade on 14th street, swann street and the alley.
