Courses that will aid your career in Gerontology Gerontology is the study of the aging population. This includes anything from how they feel about it to what happens to their physiology to helping improve their final years. Colleges educate health care administration majors on all of these subjects. The following is a list of courses—offered at Stevens Henager College—that are very helpful in becoming a successful gerontologist.

Social Gerontology The first is to Social Gerontology, or how your age will affect the social dynamics in your life. These courses will help you understand how the family dynamics change for a person as they age. What new roles they fulfill and what old roles are passed on to someone else. It also teaches students what the aging an expect from their social environment, health, elderly care, retirement and economics. This education will help you understand and identify end-of-life issues that come with growing old. One of those major issues is how the body stops working the way it used to. For an adult that has been active for many years, one of the hardest things to accept is not being able to do the things you used to. The body degenerates in an almost predictable way. Taking a course on The Aging Body will help you understand what changes are normal, and what are pathological. Students come away with an understanding of what body systems will change and how to identify disorders with each of them—including diabetes, dementia, and cancer. Medications and nutritional considerations are also covered in regards to these systems. As the elderly lose certain functions that enriched their lives for so many years, they lose purpose and pleasure in life. Stevens Henager offers a course on enhancing the life of the older adult. This course will help students identify certain physical and emotional needs and fill those needs with positive social interactions, proper exercise and healthy habits. Students come away understanding what it is to enhance the life of an elderly adult. The education continues to show aspiring gerontologist what options are available for long-term care, should one of their visitors need it.


The class Long-Term Care Options for an Aging Population teaches the broad scope of long-term care options available for the coming generations—including what the world is prepared for and what they aren’t. Topics covered include: retirement homes, Medicare, assisted living, social security, etc.

On-Site Externships Finally, the last course required for the emphasis includes an externship in a real world setting. The externship requires that the student spend a majority of their hours on-site. This means that they spend a minimum of 80 hours in an on-site clinical experience. There, students get to learn on-the-job from experienced professionals. They get invaluable experience that will help them land their first job. A professional will observe on a weekly basis to rate the student’s performance and to give experienced feedback. The other 20 hours are spent in class learning the professional’s perspective from a professor. These are the courses that Stevens Henager College offers its gerontology students.
