Getting Familiar with the Field of Respiratory Therapy When you know that you want to go into respiratory therapy, it is important that you understand how to develop the personality traits that will help you be successful. Many people graduate with a degree in respiratory therapy, but it is important that you know how to go a step above that.
Patience and Communication First, you should make sure that you take time to develop your patience. You will be working with a variety of patients and you need to understand that each patient will have different needs and it is your job to be able to assess those needs and meet those needs. Patience can be hard to develop if it is something that you are not naturally inclined to, but it will help you throughout your career. You should not be afraid to really master your emotions and learn to work with a variety of people to ensure that you are versatile. Second, you will need to understand how to communicate clearly. There are many people that will come to you scared about their condition and you want to be able to communicate what is happening and what treatment plan you are going to prescribe. Although you may not be able to use technical terms with your patients, you should be sure that you do not treat them like they are not smart. You should explain to them their condition and make sure that they are fully aware of what is going on in their body. After they fully understand what is going on in their body, you will then want to explain to them the treatment plan that you have laid out. When you talk with your patients, you want to be able to develop trust and this requires you to be completely honest. If you say that you are going to follow through with a specific treatment plan, you should make sure that the treatment plan is what you are going to do. If you decide that you are going to change your treatment plan or if you want to veer off the path from this plan let them know. The more open you are and the better job you do at communicating, the easier it will be to ensure that your clients trust you and that you are able to have an honest relationship with them. This will facilitate their treatment in a more effective manner as well.
Getting the Schooling Needed to Become a Respiratory Therapist Finally, you should be sure that you understand how you are going to get the schooling and the experience that you need to set yourself apart from other applicants. Getting the required education will be necessary, but you will want to get experience as well. Take the time that you need to intern or even volunteer to get the experience that you need to set yourself apart. Not only with this experience help bolster your resume, but it will also be a beneficial way to see if this career is something that you know you will enjoy for many years to come.
