ENGAGEMENT BY DESIGN STUDIO HANK Amsterdam-based Studio Hank is a young practice driven by a fresh group of creative designers who excel in the hotel and hospitality industry. At the helm of ‘Hank’ is interior designer Maureen Mak van Waay who gives her clients a wealth of experience with a variety of projects to her name.

How did you get into interior design? I sort of grew up with it. I started working as an interior designer when I was about 24. My mother had an interior design business, where I worked for six years before she sold it. After that, I decided to start my own company under the name Studio Hank.

Do you have a particular favourite designer or anyone who is a major influence? I actually look a lot at fashion designers, like Tom Ford and Alex Perry to draw inspiration. Alex Perry makes really wonderful dresses which I love. In fact, I’m trying to get my own wedding dress from him but they are almost always sold out! For interiors I guess it’s a bit obvious but probably Marcel Wanders and Philippe Starck.

You’re getting married. Who is the lucky man? His name is Micha. We are doing the official part in Holland at my parents’ house in May this year. They live near Amsterdam and have a beautiful house with a garden. Of course we then have a party planned for the end of the summer in Ibiza! What’s the attraction of Ibiza? Well it’s small and sweet and I really like the styling in lots of places. Tapas or Sushi? Sushi definitely! Essential items for Ibiza? Easy bikinis, sarongs and flip-flops.

You design lamps and other interior furniture… Can you tell us more about that? I just recently created my own line of furniture for the first time, using steel piping as a base material. It was a challenge to create something beautiful from such a simple, raw material, but so rewarding once we got to the finished product.

Where do you shop for essential Ibiza items? I hate shopping in hot weather so either in Amsterdam or online.

Do you intend to do more of this? Yes, we already made a new line with different designs in other colours, such as white and gold. The first designs were just black.

What’s your favourite eatery in Amsterdam? Well I live in Jordaan and there’s this great deli just around the corner called JWO Lekkernijen. They do the best sandwiches and pre-prepared food (which is ideal for me because I’m a bit of a lazy chef!)

What’s your favourite hotel in Holland? My favourite hotel in Holland at the moment is the Pulitzer Amsterdam. I love sitting in the garden there in summertime or at the bar in wintertime.

King’s Day or Gay Pride? I love both but let’s say Gay Pride because I love to dress up!
