Cited by some as the original Ibizan Rockstar, Diego Calvo is an island native and owner of the Concept Hotel Group which includes hospitality standouts Santos, Tropicana, Dorado, Cubanito and, our personal favourite, the Paradiso Art Hotel. As the man behind Rock Nights, he produces the rock & roll parties which recreate the epic social scene of the 80s and 90s. We sat down with Diego to get all the insights about the island’s rock & roll scene, the greatest moments in his career so far and how the music genre inspired his businesses.

What can you tell us about the history of rock & roll on Ibiza? In the 70s there was a boom in Ibiza when rock stars from all over the world chose the island as the place to party, record an album, spend their holidays or perform live. There are many anecdotes and stories of great stars linked to Ibiza – Nina Hagen got married on the island in 1987 in a punk-themed wedding which lasted two days, Freddie Mercury celebrated his famous 40th birthday at the legendary Pikes hotel, and the list just goes on. What were some of the inspirations behind your hotels? Many of the ideas and inspirations for the hotels came to me from the things that have influenced my way of life, such as Route 66 roadside motels, art deco architecture from South Beach Miami and the vintage world in general. I’ve been working in the hotel industry since the age of 17 and have managed to combine it with my other passion, that being rock & roll of course. My party business Rock Nights, which was created in 2005, was also inspired by individuals in the hospitality business such as Ian Schrager, creator of the first boutique hotel group Morgans Hotel Group – he took the industry to another level by making hotels not just places to sleep but also social spaces. You’ve made it clear how much rock & roll plays a role in your life. How does the music genre influence your business spaces? Each hotel has its own concept, essence and history to tell, and the rule-breaking attitude of rock & roll is present in some more than in others. Our office design was inspired by the TV series Vinyl by Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger, set in the 1970s New York record label world. We have an American Wurlitzer II from 1968 that works with francs, an original Azkoyen tobacco machine from the 1970s and a bourbon bar. So, rock & roll plays an everyday role in my businesses. Can you elaborate on the sources of inspiration behind your Dorado Ibiza Suites? The Dorado Ibiza Suites were created with the idea of opening an exclusive hotel where the theme was revolved around the history of rock & roll. There are 14 suites, each of them paying tribute to a gold disc. In addition, there are books about each

room’s featured artist and a golden headboard in the shape of that artist. We have the ‘I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll’ suite by Joan Jett, ‘Good Vibrations’ by the Beach Boys, and the honorary gold disc by Loquillo – one of the biggest rock & roll stars in Spain who dropped by last year to inaugurate it personally. What is the future of rock & roll on the island? Rock & roll will always be global; it is a style that has and will continue to endure over time. There are many genres like electronic dance and reggaeton that are still fads, but rock & roll is forever. We have managed to take our Rock Night parties to the island’s biggest clubs, and since then have opted for smaller venues, holding weekly parties at the Pikes hotel. I cannot be prouder of being able to continue with this adventure that initially began with the desire to listen to music that we used to listen to in our car when we went out to party. How has live music developed on the island? At the end of the 1970s Ibiza saw huge artists such as Bob Marley and Eric Clapton come to perform live. The Ibiza ’92 festival, promoted by Pino Saglioco, was responsible for bringing some of the biggest stars to the island, and it was Ibiza Rocks who later took up the baton of live music on the island between 2005 and 2017. Each summer they played host to great bands such as Arctic Monkeys and Primal Scream, which was the last big concert that Ibiza Rocks celebrated. The after-party of this concert was held at our Rock Nights in Pikes and was attended by the band led by Bobbie Gillespie along with Kate Moss, who partied until the early morning. You live and breathe rock & roll – why is it so important to you? For me personally it’s important because it’s part of my lifestyle, I could not conceive my life without music. Ibiza will always continue to exist, and Rock Nights will continue to fight for different sounds with the support of the people who follow us and the fantastic collective of local bands, musicians, artists and rock stars who continue to choose Ibiza as the place for their recordings or simply as a place to party or live. Long live rock & roll in Ibiza, baby! concepthotelgroup.es/hotels 9

Lifestyle

THE IBIZA DREAM

Vanessa and Oddy

The journey that Vanessa and Oddy adventured on with their two daughters to eventually call Ibiza home is one of many sacrifices, immense determination and a strong desire. Living a life on the island that they could only imagine a few years ago, we sat down with them to get the full details behind their story and the lifestyle they’ve adopted since making the big move four years ago. How and when did you two first meet? Over 12 years ago on a rooftop overlooking Bondi Beach in Australia. I was still skiing professionally while Vanessa was modelling.  What was your main drive behind settling down in Ibiza? On a conscience level we wanted to find a place where we could be fully present with our new-born daughter, Luca. We wanted to get out of the city and out of Australia, as we wanted to be back in Europe to be closer to Vanessa’s family in Germany, and initially the plan was to call Ibiza home only for around 12 to 18 months. We got married on the island in 2013 and had previously travelled here whilst feeling a little lost in our relationship and had found each other again, so the energy we felt from this place was undeniable. Once Vanessa got pregnant with Evie and after she was born in our Casita home, we began to call Ibiza home rather than just somewhere we were living for a brief period of time. What do you love most about living on the island? The thing we really love is that Ibiza is the perfect environment to create the life that we want to live. We love that we can live in the countryside in an old farmhouse on an island and have all the beauty and benefits of that type of life, and yet still have

all the great aspects about a metropolitan life at our disposal. Being able to visit good friends, having an array of great restaurants nearby and accessibility to the rest of the world make this place incredibly special. Can you share with us how you manage such a hectic and travel-filled schedule with two children? For Vanessa, working full-time after Evie was old enough to attend nursery meant an intense schedule including constant travel to places such as Australia, South Africa, India and Canada. She is the sole income provider in our household, sacrificing an incredible amount of energy in order to be able to give as much to our family as possible. I draw energy and inspiration to take on my role at home with the girls while Vanessa is travelling, and I know that she draws her energy and willpower to pack a suitcase and leave her family and home for work when she knows that everyone is healthy, happy and living the best life we can both provide for our children. We are very happy with the balance and environment in which we live in at the moment and are extremely proud to have created the life we live as a family on our favourite island. Are there any cool projects that you are currently working on that you would be willing to share with us? Since the birth of our first daughter we have dedicated our lives to our children entirely. We packed up the lives we had in Australia and sold Vanessa’s apartment in New York in order to move to Ibiza. We also took some time off work, focusing our full attention and energy on our girls. Today, we still live with the same mentality as it is what makes us truly happy, however, reality means that one of us has to work. Now that the kids are a little older and in nursery and school, we have begun to open our minds to doing some projects for ourselves. The first project we are working on is happening because of Vanessa’s Instagram account, which is flooded with messages for tips on Ibiza. We are going to put together an e-book with all of the information we want to share about our life and tips on the island. It will describe all the beaches, restaurants, hotels and other hidden gems we like to visit. Additionally, we hope to create a clothing line which reflects our lifestyle here on the island – simple and organic. The collection would use predominantly neutral tones alongside free-flowing, soft and sustainable materials. Can you share any Ibiza secrets with us?  The low-season is the best kept secret! You can do so much more on the island when it is not as hot and not nearly as busy. We walk a lot during the spring and autumn months as the walking trails that cover the whole island are incredible and also great for mountain biking. The water is definitely cold but is still a beautiful site to take in when walking and relaxing on one of the many beaches. 15

At least 27,000 species of plant and animal life die out every year – a rate unprecedented since the disappearance of dinosaurs. The strain we are putting on the planet’s eco-system cannot be ignored, which is why we are supporting another fantastic initiative born out of Ibiza, a non-profit organisation called Music Against Animal Cruelty (MAAC).

MAAC was conceived by Johnny White of infamous electronic music act Art Department, alongside his friend and founder of Pulse Radio, Wade Cawood and Jack Baucher, founder of bespoke wildlife travel and conservation company Tears for Tigers.

selecting various grassroots initiatives as beneficiaries. For Baucher, there are clearly some big plans for 2019, asserting “I can’t go into too much detail other than we’ll be coming to New York, London and I hope Amsterdam, as well as Ibiza of course”.

MAAC acts as a broker between musicians, the music industry and music fans to support organisations working to save animals facing diminishing populations and/or extinction. It’s a simple mission statement – to aid wildlife conservation – but with a big vision. As White puts it, “This isn’t just techno against animal cruelty. This is music against it.”

MAAC’s primary focus to date has been on two amazing projects, those being Lion Guardians and Rhino Conservation Botswana. Lion Guardians is a conservation organisation that promotes the coexistence of people and lions in Africa. For almost a decade it has worked to improve community conservation by blending traditional knowledge with culture and science. MAAC’s other focus, Rhino Conservation Botswana, helps to increase and protect populations of black and white rhinos in Botswana through intensive monitoring and by engaging local communities in their protection. Another key focus of the organisation is a charity called Guerilla Tactics, which supports more urgent initiatives where a small donation can save the life of an animal in need.

Since its launch event in Nairobi back in 2017, MAAC has been gathering pace with 2018 events in Toronto, Canada – White’s home city – and Ibiza at the International Music Summit (IMS) and its own ‘Wild’ event at Ushuaïa, headlined by legends such as Adam Beyer, Bedouin and DJ Sneak, in addition to special guest Black Coffee. The MAAC Ambassador programme allows artists and promoters to get involved in everything from social media support and donating exclusive productions and/or mixes or memorabilia, to playing at MAAC events and organising their own MAAC fundraisers. The industry response has already been hugely positive and MAAC has a growing list of ambassadors that regularly grace the top spot on flyers around the world. Ultimately, MAAC’s objectives are to curate its own largescale events, raising funds for its own projects. In the interim it operates as a fund, using events to raise exposure and

To sign off it seems fitting that the final word should come from Johnny White, who is relentless in the pursuit of MAAC’s vision of a world where wildlife has a voice and the right to thrive and survive. “This is going to be a powerful movement when we realise its full potential. We need to be clear that this goes beyond just our community. This is a global force against treating animals like they have the same right to be here that we do. For now, we’re looking to our sector of the industry for support as we build the foundation, but the bigger picture is garnering the support of the music industry at large.” savethemwithsound.org 19

Title Meredith Bonnie

FROM LONDON TO IBIZA Bonnie Meredith, interior designer as well as creative director and founder of her own company Bonnie Meredith Interiors, fulfilled a long-term plan of moving her home base to the Balearic island, and enlisted Domus Nova London to sell her Notting Hill maisonette in order to facilitate buying an unmodernised gem of a finca, overlooking Xarraca and Portinax in the north.

How did the move to Ibiza come about? Guy and I had only recently met when we discussed moving to Ibiza. We decided to go for it and rented a house for a year, whilst renting out my west London flat through Domus Nova. Soon after arriving and feeling totally at home on our new island, we fell in love with this ancient finca with sea views and plenty of land. Although it seemed unliveable with a long and complicated restoration, we decided to do a quick update, make it homely and live there while we waited for planning. For me it was a template for a new, more exciting, stylish, witty and eclectic approach to interiors in Ibiza – I sometimes call it maxi-minimalism. Now that the place is so cosy, we never want to move out. In what way was Domus Nova truly part of your story in moving from London to Ibiza? Having realised we really needed to sell up the flat in London in order to make the move happen around the time of the White Island Classic sailing regatta last year, we discussed this with the founders of Domus Nova themselves, who practically guaranteed selling the property even though the market conditions were rocky to say the least. They did this quite quickly, so Domus Nova were involved in every part of our transition from London to Ibiza. 23

Interior Design

Bonnie Meredith

Having worked with leading names in the interior design industry for 17 years and even starting your own company, what are your next plans? It was an amazing experience to work with both Jonathan Reed and Martin Brudnizki on projects ranging from a Jordanian palace to Scott’s and The Ivy Club. In 2010 I set up Bonnie Meredith Interiors, focusing more on high-end residential projects. I now work between Ibiza and an office in London’s Soho and am busy manifesting my dream client on the island. All of my clients have been word of mouth so far, and it is very important to me that there is an instant rapport. Projects are very much a collaboration; the client has their vision and likes as well as dislikes. It’s my responsibility to realise these through a series of educated, holistic and creative choices. Naturally issues will always arise, as this is the very nature of design. However, as the team are forward-thinking and passionate, we come to the right solution seamlessly and with the process unfolding right beneath us. Creating a dream home takes serious dedication. The client must ultimately be thrilled, considering that their island home is where they spend their

most quality time with their loved ones. This gives me great pleasure in what I do. Can you tell us a secret about your work process? I love to sketch, and I find that this process is golden in terms of helping the client or contractor visualise, whether it’s a space, detail or bespoke furniture piece. It’s surprising how many get away with not doing this! What inspires you on the island? Inspiration is all around. Houses range from soulful old fincas or a finca-style, to clean, crisp and modern. I like a little juxtaposition between the architecture and furnishings, where contemporary spaces really come alive with a more rustic and mid-century look and vice versa. La Granja, Los Enamorados and the restaurant & bar at Hotel Montesol, whilst all different, all successfully reflect sides of the island’s natural environment and cultural heritage that inspire me. bonniemeredith.com

WAT E R B O R N Zoë Van Straalen and Jo Hepworth are the brains behind their business Children of the Water, which tackles the common and global tragedy of young children drowning by offering self-rescue swimming courses. Their mission and devotion to minimize the possibility of such a tragedy occurring has been the drive behind the business for the last three years, which has rapidly developed and expanded to a global scale. We caught up with Zoë and Jo to understand more about the philosophy behind their business and what their plans are for the future. Can you elaborate on your technique in teaching children a potentially lifesaving skill? The base of our teaching is self-rescue, a highly specialised technique that teaches babies from crawling age to six years old how to rescue themselves should an accident occur in the water. We have developed and evolved this technique over the past few years with our own holistic approach. What approach do you take during a course? The journey we take families on during our course is one far greater than just swimming for survival. Through trust, devotion and courage the child and parents learn to overcome fear and grow together in the water. It can be a life-changing experience with foundation learning for the child that stays with them far beyond the course. Any clues about the company’s future? This year we have started to train practitioners of our techniques globally to be able to reach even more people and grow our instructor family. We continue to get requests from all over the world and have recently opened in mainland Spain, Holland, Curacao, London and we are even heading to Australia in November this year. The Children for the Water Foundation will also launch in 2019, which aims to teach underprivileged children in communities where there are large areas of water, yet where most of the local families and children do not know how to swim or save themselves if they happen to fall into the water. childrenofthewater.com

La Paloma Family

Prasuna first came to Ibiza from Italy in 2000, bringing her Italian palette and passion for food with her. Stumbling upon a little house located in a tiny village in the heart of the island, she took the leap and opened her own restaurant, La Paloma, in 2004. The main drive behind her divine food preparations? Fresh food using local and organic ingredients and only sourcing the very best to serve to hungry guests. Of course, there are some exceptions – like the award-winning olive oil Prasuna insists on using from the Catalonia region of Italy, because some ingredients truly only taste the best when brought over from home. The bohemian atmosphere exuded from the intimate and effortless setting of the restaurant creates a magical mood for guests to enjoy their lunch and dinner. The summer months call for cosy candlelit dinners in the beautiful garden, complete with baby blue tables and gypsy lights hanging over the restaurant. It really does feel like sitting in the back garden of your own home, and every guest of La Paloma is seen as part of the family. If you’re lucky, you’ll get the extra treat of live music to create an even more homely atmosphere where all the dining guests and staff feel like one big family – or famiglia as Prasuna would say! Food and presentation go hand-in-hand here, and everything from the carefully selected ingredients to the way that the food is plated is executed with love. Choose from an array of healthy but comforting dishes such as risottos, roasted chicken, homemade pastas and juicy grilled meats – the list just goes on. Prepared with only the very best ingredients, and even more importantly, with the strongest passion for food, La Paloma family has created not just a place to enjoy some delectable food, but they have produced a special experience that has all of the island coming back to this San Lorenzo delicacy. While it may be all fun at Amorevore’s food and arts festival, the organisation additionally voices an important message regarding the island’s environment. Our planet’s climate change is a continuous challenge which must be met with positive solutions and a regenerative mindset. Amorevore is an organisation that places value on locally-grown and sourced foods as the main form of sustenance – all from Ibiza’s very own farmers and producers. This vision extends globally but particularly on the island where 90 per cent of the food is imported when that really does not have to be the case, considering that Ibiza holds a truly incredible heritage in the food and agriculture practises. Showcasing the Mediterranean hub’s abundant food scene, the festival aims to bring awareness to the way that we grow, produce and consume food, as it holds a substantial amount of power to change our current environmental circumstance. The ultimate goal is to place Ibiza on the global map as a destination and source for sustainable food habits. Behind La Bella Verde’s promise to offer a one-of-a-kind sailing experience across the Balearic archipelago lies an even more important message that the company hopes to expand, namely, to educate the public on the current problems about pollution in order to give future generations the possibility to enjoy clean waters as well. Love Ibiza Now

NO PLASTIC PEOPLE

Embodying the philosophy that a small action can make a big impact, the non-profit organisation Love Ibiza Now (LIN) has been set up to educate and encourage locals, businesses and tourists to make more eco-conscious, sustainable choices in their daily habits, and to ‘tread more lightly on our island before it’s too late’. Summers undoubtedly attract an astounding number of people to the go-to holiday destination, accommodating an additional four million tourists along with the island’s 150,000 residents. Unfortunately, the resulting pressure on the infrastructure, as well as the direct impact on Ibiza’s environmental health are all too clear. Love Ibiza Now, co-founded by Ana Lui, Matias Alexandro and Hjordis Fogelberg, has the primary objective to rid the island’s shorelines of plastic and any other harmful waste, with the final aim to move towards a plastic-free Ibiza. Throughout the winter months, the organisation brings together the local community to clean the island’s beaches and shores but encourages everyone to adopt the responsibility in collecting any waste to combat the constant battle against plastic. The events have particularly attracted Ibiza’s youngsters by educating and raising awareness about the global issues regarding plastic pollution, in addition to advocating the importance in keeping a clean environment on the island. In the hopes of spreading the message in a quick and productive fashion, Love Ibiza Now has and continues to join forces with a number of organisations to discuss easy solutions regarding how to replace, reduce, reuse and recycle plastic products. Ibiza Preservation Fund (IPF) and the Marilles Foundation are just two movements actively uniting to assist in coordinating and launching a campaign towards an Ibiza that is free of plastic. Head to the Love Ibiza Now website, set up as a resource for anyone interested in improving their eco-footprint on the island, including receiving useful advice and recommendations. In particular, the website’s Take Action page has a tailored section for villa owners, providing some fantastic steps that any responsible owner should strongly consider in order to preserve the iconic beauty and nature that make Ibiza the island that it is. loveibizanow.com 53

Katrina Klerks

A B S T R ACT TA K E OV E R Katrina Klerks

Boy are we in love - mark our words, this is the next big thing. Going by the name of Kat, Katrina Klerks is a Dutch native and Ibiza local as well as an up-and-coming artist in the world of expressionist and poetic styles of painting. Having recently taken her passion for the practice to turn it into a rapidly growing business, Kat’s work is distinguishable by her contemporary take on geometric and abstract painting, which gives off a Picasso-like vibe using predominantly neutral tones across her various collections. Raised by a surrealist and creative father, Kat uses an abstract framework to create different artistic techniques, all while encompassing a similar style which makes her recognisable as an artist. Kat herself asserts that her interest in expressionism and fauvism, and moreover, the difficulty in finding such pieces of art for her own home, sparked the interest to start painting art that was seeking a balance in imperfection - both in colour and form. Her work has proven to be a success, having her collections displayed in various well-established hotels and restaurants across Amsterdam including, but not limited to, The Hoxton Hotel, Libertine Café Café and the Morgan and Mees Hotel. This artist’s contemporary takes on abstract art is a growing favourite back in the Netherlands, as well as on the island of Ibiza, where Kat fits in perfectly amongst the other artists, interior designers and creative enthusiasts calling the island home. Her lifelong passion for art, and specifically for expressionist and abstract forms of the practice, are evident in her beautifully crafted work and which will undoubtedly turn the talented artist into a household name amongst Ibiza’s residents. katklerks.com

Tara Nash

AGE OF AQUARIUS WORDS BY TARA NASH

On planet earth for the last two thousand years we have been in the age of Pisces which was represented by hierarchy, control, war, machines, the patriarchy and powerful information being held in the hands of few. In the last 50 years we have started the transition into the age of Aquarius which has the spirit of revolution and is symbolised by traits such as freedom, information, awareness, energy, community and connection. Like with any transition, there will be those who resist change and cling on to the old ways and the radicals that want to stamp out the old and bring in the new. In 1978, a congress of Astrology was held in San Antonio where it was decided that the sign of Ibiza is Scorpio. This is fitting since it is an island surrounded by deep blue waters. Scorpion energy is dark and mysterious, esoteric, sensitive, erotic and divine which sums up the beloved island perfectly. The energy of Ibiza is deeply transformative and you will often hear stories how Ibiza captures or changes people’s lives. It is almost as if the energy allows people to peel off certain layers of their ego and discover new parts of themselves which they were not aware existed before. A newly discovered inner freedom can be unveiled and experimented with. The magnetic ley lines running through Ibiza supports transformation and makes it a powerful place for healing technologies like reiki, chakra balancing, yoga, meditation and many more. However the polarity of Scorpion energy is darkness and death so there can be a destructive element which can be felt in the hedonistic party scene. Ibiza is a fascinating experimental hub, it is like a bed of soil to grow the New Age of Aquarian. People come, perhaps 63

first interested in the party scene, but something deeper happens, the soul searching and the emotional egoic cleansing. The age of Aquarian is an intellectual energy, the age of ‘knowing,’ the spread of knowledge will be widespread and there will be a blending of the material and the spiritual. We see that now in luxury homes with yoga pavilions and meditation sanctuaries. Lunches at Cala Bonita with rose and fresh Marsico’s are accompanied by talk of crypto currency which in itself is a very Aquarian concept - a new economy that is not controlled by the elite. Arguably, the greater economic capacity you have, the more time and freedom you have to become aware of your life purpose on the material plain and be able to develop lifestyle choices to elevate your consciousness. We are in the age of Aquarius and this edition has featured articles on food trends and animal sanctuary’s which reflects this new age consciousness of an increasingly compassionate culture. Healing modalities like yoga and meditation are essential ancient technologies which are of great benefit during this time as we are over stimulated and exhausted by the technology of our smart phones and jet-set life styles. We will all differ in how we respond to the rapid changes in our imminent future. Now more than ever, the call to action to take space in your life and slow down, whether it is for a fiveminute daily meditation or buying a second home in Ibiza where you can recharge. Our lives are saturated with choices, but we need to cultivate and elevate our capacity to make good choices. [Do ya self a favour and buy a bloody house in Ibiza.] DOMUS NOVA IBIZA

Anders Enkvist

T I M E TO W I N E D OW N ANDERS ENKVIST Located in Ibiza’s central region of Santa Gertrudis is owner and sommelier Anders Enkvist’s speciality wine shop and distribution SOMM. Shifting his full focus towards his passion for wine following a twenty-year long career in party promotions and DJing back in Sweden, as well as eight years of experience in the wine import and distribution industries in both Asia and Europe, Anders saw the potential to add a fine wine store to his dearly loved Balearic island. His constant yearning for sunshine and personal connection to the island since the first visit in the summer of 1989 further persuaded Anders to combine his devotion to and knowledge of the beverage, turning it into a successful business. For Anders, Santa Gertrudis was the location for his ideal vision of opening a quality wine store in Ibiza, as the demographics of the region proved to be promising, and moreover, the small village was not only saturated with the island’s rich culture and traditions, but also continues to be a place that many residents from the European mainland call home, including Anders’ closest friends. Supporting local wine producers and stocking up on domestic Ibiza wine, gin, beer, as well as olive oil and the island’s native Hierbas liqueur was an essential aspect for SOMM in standing out as a wine shop and distributor, and Anders has managed to include highly-rated wines from Italian, French, and Austrian wineries to the staple local selection. Besides developing itself to be a successful wine shop in one of Ibiza’s most sought-after locations, SOMM also accommodates a tasting room where wine tastings for up to twenty people can be hosted, in addition to attending to pop-up dinners and destination wine tastings. What initially was just a passion for Anders during his early DJing years quickly turned into a business opportunity and eventually an accomplished brand and store, and most importantly, continues to be the drive and dedication for the Swede. wineshopibiza.com

M Y DA U G H T E R AND ME Ibiza-based Dutch stylist and mother Renu Kashyap has built an impressive career in the fashion and production industries throughout Europe, as well as co-authoring the ‘Ibiza Bohemia’ book published by Assouline, which manages to capture the visual and spiritual vibe of the Mediterranean island. For Renu, given that the fast and demanding lifestyle of a parent is an everyday occurrence, she desired to create a quality retreat for mothers and their daughters to reconnect and reflect on the special bond they hold, opening the doors of her own Ibiza home as the location for the refuge. Renu advocates for a nourishing relation between a mother and daughter, saying, ‘your daughter grows up so fast, sometimes it feels as if it is too fast,’ and thereby hopes for the retreat to be a unique experience that creates lifelong memories. Taking place four times a year between April and October, the retreat aspires to strengthen a mother and daughter’s bond away from the commotion of daily life in Rene’s magnificent home in Ibiza’s countryside. The villa is tucked away in the small northern village of San Lorenzo, secluded from the island’s infamous party scene and thereby providing the perfect environment for a quality getaway. Just some of the many activities during the retreat include physical exercises such as partner yoga and hiking, cooking courses revolved around wholesome recipes, mother and daughter photoshoots, and picnics in the woods featuring healthy and delicious vegetarian meals. It is the perfect blend of laughter, creativity, health, self-development and fun. The months of May through October are ideal to spend on the island, providing temperatures and opportunities for outdoor activities that are never entirely certain to be possible in the spring and autumn months on Europe’s mainland. Ibiza has become the destination for escape, tranquillity, and revitalization from the everyday hustle and bustle, operating on its notoriously serene island schedule. IG: @renukashyap_stylist 73

The Hub

THE HUB It was only a matter of time before Ibiza would introduce its very own co-working space for the island’s many freelance-based and independent workers. Offering a professional working environment, theHUB caters to individuals who can inspire, connect and motivate other like-minded creatives. We had the pleasure in meeting Kellie and Sam, the creators of this space, to discuss their journey in envisioning and eventually executing what has become theHUB.

The Hub

How did you guys actually meet? Kellie: The island is a small place, especially when you’re an expat! Sam and I actually had a lot of friends in common but our paths had only briefly crossed once and we didn’t really engage in conversation. My 30th birthday was approaching and a few friends decided to rent a villa for that weekend to celebrate, which happened to be Sam’s home. Once the dust had settled on my birthday celebrations, Sam got in touch with me and asked me out to dinner. It may have been a different story if we had wrecked the place!  How did you both end up in Ibiza? Kellie: I first came to Ibiza in 2007 on holiday with a big group of friends. We came back every year until 2012 when I decided I wanted to live here permanently and moved over for good in April 2013. I’m a musician and wanted to be in a more creative environment where I could develop myself as an artist, and was fortunate to secure a steady job in the music industry which gave me the financial security to do this whilst staying in Ibiza year-round. Sam: My first Ibiza holiday was in 2007 for the closing parties, which then turned into coming back for six or seven more long weekend trips across 2008 and 2009! Needless to say it was love at first sight, and I eventually moved to the island in 2011.

What do you love most about Ibiza? Kellie: It’s beauty and hedonism. I’m discovering new corners of the island all the time and I genuinely feel most at peace when I’m exploring it. Whether it be on land by foot or under the water during a swim, it is an amazing place to call home and attracts a lot of great things in many aspects of my life. Sam: It is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Initially it was the partying that brought me here, but that has since changed! I’m very proud to call Ibiza home - the mix of people here, a strong expat community and being able to crack a joke about things with Ibicencos in a number of cafés across the island. This place is truly special! Where did theHUB idea come from and how has the journey been to get to where you are today? Kellie: As I mentioned earlier, I was lucky enough to have work here as soon as I arrived, however, this involved working mostly remotely from my apartment. I did this for about three years and I found that it was very counterproductive. More so in a creative sense, as I would work eight hours per day from my ‘studio’, which actually was the spare bedroom in my apartment, and after a long day of sitting at that desk I would feel like I wasn’t in the frame of mind to create music in that same space. Often, I wouldn’t get dressed or leave

the house unless it was to go shopping. When Sam and I met three years ago, we spoke about the idea of creating a space where we could grow a community of like-minded people on the island who could collaborate. With my skillset being in personal assistance and office management, and Sam’s in entrepreneurial background and key connections on the island, we decided to start seeking out a suitable space and the investment needed and within a month, we created the space we now call theHUB. Sam: Kellie and I saw an opportunity to create a proper coworking space on the island. Kellie is a perfectionist when it comes to getting things to work and has had some experience in working in shared spaces before. I was also very keen on the idea of having an office where I would be surrounded by other hard-working and passionate individuals. Ultimately it was our ambition to bring people together who could collaborate and add value to each other’s propositions. Is there a plan to expand theHUB?   Kellie: Well, our business is just under two years old, with the first of June this year marking our official second birthday. We’ve already expanded physically into a new space within the existing premises to increase our member capacity and our intention for this year is to explore expansion in other ways including bespoke events, ‘work-away’ weeks for corporate company training and a schedule of regular activities steered toward health and well-being launched before the summer. Sam:  In the immediate future we want theHUB to be the best co-working space possible. This includes maintaining and improving the current great working environment and improving upon our social, business and learning events schedules along with all the facilities needed to make that possible. If we were to do another space I think Thailand and Peru would be on the list! thehubibiza.com 79
