Aruba is one of the largest and busiest restaurant and bar in the region, situated right on the gorgeous Bournemouth seafront.

Have you visited Christchurch’s new restaurant and lounge bar, which goes by the name of Blushh?

Boasting a sun terrace, outdoor seating, tropical palm trees and an island cocktail bar, the cosmopolitan venue also has outstanding panoramic sea views of Bournemouth Pier, the golden beaches and the Purbecks.

We went down to the launch night and loved the fusion of modern and funky décor combined with more casual, comfy seating areas. You’ll be spoilt for choice… we recommend the Pink Lady cocktail – vodka, cucumber, muddled strawberries, topped with cranberry juice and served in an iced Martini glass.

We’ve teamed up with Aruba to offer a meal for 4 and an Aruba cocktail on arrival! There’s something for everyone on the fusion international menu; all dishes are prepared with the finest ingredients.

TOP 5 FILMS

THE SHINING (DIR. STANLEY KUBRICK)

Despite being released back in 1980, there is something about the Stephen King adaptation that, to this day, remains dark and haunting. Perhaps it’s the music, perhaps it’s the slow slip into madness, or perhaps it’s the unexplainable happenings in an abandoned hotel.

Iconic Quote – “All work and no play…”

4

EVIL DEAD II (DIR. SAM RAIMI)

In Evil Dead II, Raimi takes his story from the first film which started a whole chain of ‘video nasties’ and turned it on its head with some dark comedy and OTT gore, while simultaneously creating one of the most iconic Horror Heroes of modern cinema in Ash Williams with his chainsaw arm and boomstick.

Iconic Quote – “Groovy!”

3

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS (DIR. DREW GODDARD)

Just as Scream wrote the rules to surviving Horror films, Cabin in the Woods goes a step further and tears up the book altogether. Cabin has everything that a good horror film needs – practical effects, spooky Latin books, a cabin, pain-worshiping undead cannibal rednecks… a Merman…

Iconic Quote – “Good job, Zombie-Arm!”

2

THE EXORCIST (DIR. WILLIAM FRIEDKIN)

Upon its original release, this film was seen as so horrific and terrifying that the celluloid the film was made on was deemed to be evil. It may not be as truly terrifying by today’s standards, but there is no denying that this is still one of the scariest horror films in the history of cinema, so turn out all the lights and watch this if you want some scares.

Iconic Quote – “The Power of Christ compels you!”

1

HALLOWEEN (DIR. JOHN CARPENTER)

If you want a true Horror film, this is it! I first watched this film when I was 12 after my parents told me not to watch it. To this day, I check my car’s back seat for masked, psychotic killers when driving at night. John Carpenter’s original slasher movie started an entire Horror phenomenon and inspired many other films after it.

Iconic Quote – “Death has come to your little town, Sheriff.” SEE ALL LISTINGS ONLINE AT WWW.DOMOREMAG.COM/FILM 9

Enjoy spooking out passers by!

SPOOKY NAILS Being a crazy nail art junkie, my thoughts first turn to what I’m going to do with my nails now that Halloween is upon us…

Pinterest is a great site to get inspiration from. You’ll be overwhelmed with all the Halloween nail ideas, from pumpkins to skulls; spiders to blood, there are so many to choose from! Instagram is another great site to find nail art ideas, or you can get extra creative and design your own from scratch!

RE-ORANGE

YOUR WARDROBE

By Jodie Simpson

MAKE THIS SPOOKY SEASON A STYLISH ONE!

FREAKY FASHION 3 1

Unleash the Halloween spirit this October. Monochrome is still an on-going trend for A/W 13, and orange is this season’s colour to be seen in. Combine the two together and you’ll create a striking contrast.

JACKETS

I suggest teaming a pair of black lace tights with a monochrome stripe dress (for that Halloween convict vibe) and a black leather jacket. Finish your look with orange heels and a witch’s hat for the trendiest dress-up ever!

TYNEHAM: NO SMALL SACRIFICE

PAUL MERTON & IMPRO CHUMS

IMPRO CHUMS IS A TERRIFIC IMPROVISED SHOW WHICH HAS BEEN WOWING AUDIENCES ACROSS THE UK FOR YEARS. WE CHAT ABOUT THE SKILLS OF IMPROVISATION, THE FISH BOWL GAME AND THEIR ‘ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN’ ATTITUDE

Impro Chums is brought to you by a quintet of inspired improvisers - Paul Merton, Richard Vranch, Lee Simpson, Suki Webster and Mike McShane. The Chums are able to conjure out of thin air the most breathtaking routines. Is the show totally unplanned? Paul: I haven’t written a joke for 25 years! That’s the great thing about doing this show – there is no stress involved whatsoever. We don’t have any scripts or props. Now other comedians like Phill Jupitus and Marcus Brigstocke have started doing impro with us. ‘Hang on,’ they say, ‘you don’t have to write any jokes and you do it with your mates? Where do we sign?’ What’s the key to good impro? Paul: Planning doesn’t work because it throws the other performers, who don’t know what you’ve planned. It sounds very difficult and crazy to go on stage with nothing planned, but that is actually the show’s strength. We have all worked together for a long time and know we can rely on each other. Suki: The only skill you have to learn for impro is: don’t plan and don’t worry. The key is simply listening and reacting to what the other person has just said. How do you ensure you play to each other’s strengths? Mike: We have a common language. We know how to play to each other’s strengths. If it goes belly up, someone will cover you. Someone will stick their neck out for you.

How do you keep the show fresh? Paul: As a performer, you can never be bored because you’ve never heard it before and you’re doing something that five seconds ago you didn’t know you were going to do. Why do you think audiences get such a thrill from the show? Lee: Audiences lap it up because they can see we’re really enjoying ourselves. We take risks for fun, drop each other in it and mercilessly ridicule each other. Richard: People love the sheer fun and the teamwork. They can see that the team is more important than the individual. Throughout the success of the show, are there any stand-out routines that you particularly remember? Richard: Someone will describe to you a scene that you did in a previous show, and you simply don’t remember it. People come up and say, ‘you were so funny as a penguin that time.’

16

ANe SC for mor facebook.com/DoMoreMagazine @DoMoreMagazine www.domoremag.com

Will the fun ever end? Paul: It’s such a joy performing with the Chums. Our motto is: if it’s funny, it’s justified. That spirit of ‘anything can happen’ will continue. With good health, we can carry on for years. With this show, there is no inbuilt obsolescence – apart from our own inbuilt obsolescence! Richard: I think we’ll have longevity because our humour is not niche, it’s universal. Suki: The show will go on. It’s just enormous fun! We get paid to go on tour in a lovely big bus with all our mates. What could be better than that?

Suki: I was in the ladies the other day, and a random woman came up to me and sang me a song in its entirety that I’d improvised a year earlier and had forgotten about! Why do you think the troupe has such a loyal following? Paul: You never see tired impro, and that’s what audiences love. At the Comedy Store Players, we’ve had the same people in the front row for years. We’ve even had marriages between fans! You play lots of games on stage. Do you have a favourite? Mike: A particular favourite of ours is ‘the fish bowl’ where we read out audience suggestions plucked from a fish bowl and have to perform them. I remember someone once suggested ‘pig semen,’ so we did a musical about harddrinking porcine sailors!

You can catch Paul Merton’s Impro Chums at Bournemouth’s Pavilion Theatre on Tuesday 22 October. Call 0844 576 3000 or visit www.bic.co.uk to book tickets. Also coming to The Anvil in Basingstoke (Sunday 20 October) and The Octagon Theatre in Yeovil (Saturday 09 November). By James Rampton

THE FIRST CUT – PAPER AT THE CUTTING EDGE @ SOUTHAMPTON

images: (left) James Aldridge, Thirst, 2009 (right) Money Dress by Stockwell

11 OCT - 12 JAN

The First Cut is a major exhibition featuring work from over 30 international contemporary artists who radically re-think the possibilities of working with paper. It explores how established and emerging artists transform the humble scrap of paper, through cutting, folding and sculpting, into amazingly powerful creations that could be destroyed with a single tear. Installations tumble out of the walls, a paper garden appears to grow up through the floor, a ten foot oak tree sprouts thousands of paper leaves as visitors experience a walk-through forest created entirely from hand-made paper. The artworks vary dramatically in size and form, from the miniature to the fully-immersive, but all transform a basic material into fantastical works of art with high levels craftsmanship and obsessive detail. Gazing at the stunning sculpture, Janis said, “ Yes, that’s my baby.” Local artist Linda Joyce had the idea to create the sculpture when she heard of Amy’s untimely death a few years ago. Linda wanted to help The Amy Winehouse Foundation with their work of educating and supporting young people affected by drug and alcohol misuse and supporting those seeking help in their recovery. Twelve bronze casts of the sculpture will be sold and proceeds donated to the charity.

The Art Trail also offers an educational programme called pARTicipate. Aimed at all ages there are workshops, demonstrations and the chance to meet creatives.

Residents of the London borough of Camden have dedicated the whole of October to fundraise in memory of Amy. For more information visit www.amywinehousefoundation.org

MUSIC INTERVIEW

FRIGHTENED RABBIT JANE BAKER CATCHES UP WITH GRANT HUTCHISON, ONE FIFTH OF THE MESMERISING QUINTET, AHEAD OF THEIR UPCOMING GIG IN SOUTHAMPTON For those who don’t know you, how would you describe your sound? I’d say we are definitely a part of the Scottish Miserablism Movement. Your fourth studio album ‘Pedestrian Verse’ broke into the top ten earlier this year. How did that feel? It was a great feeling, and gives us a goal for album number five! Where did the name Frightened Rabbit come from? Who came up with it? The name comes from Scott’s childhood insecurities. He was never really a fan of hanging out with other children and our Mum used to describe his look as ‘the frightened rabbit.’ You’ve performed at a number of festivals this year including Glastonbury. How does the vibe differ from a concert and which do you prefer? I definitely prefer touring headline sets, as there is at least some sort of routine involved. That makes me sound rather boring! If you could recruit anyone (dead or alive) to join Frightened Rabbit, who would it be and why?

James Graham from The Twilight Sad will always be welcome, as long as he promises not to play The Smiths all day in the van! Come November, you’ll be performing at Southampton University. Are you looking forward to singing to a crowd of rowdy students? Rowdy students are always the most fun! They do make me feel pretty old… but you can never fault them for their enthusiasm! Have you performed along the south coast before? We have played in Southampton before but I’m afraid it’s a gig we’d rather forget. We were on tour with ‘We Were Promised Jetpacks’ and nobody came to see us! This one will be different though; I have faith in Southampton! You can catch Frightened Rabbit at Southampton University on Sunday 10 November. Visit frightenedrabbit.com to book your tickets in advance. Their album ‘Pedestrian Verse’ and latest EP ‘The Woodpile’ are out now.

NEWTON FAULKNER THE LAIDBACK DREADLOCK GENIUS CHATS TO ALICE ROOK ABOUT NEW ALBUM ‘STUDIO ZOO’ AND PONDERS WHAT ITEMS HE WOULD CHOOSE TO TAKE TO A DESERT ISLAND Why did you decide to live stream the entire recording process of ‘Studio Zoo’ 24/7? I thought it was an interesting way of bridging the gap between playing live and studio recording. How does it feel to have made history by live streaming it? Do you think there will be other artists that follow suit? It feels pretty damn good! I’m sure someone will, just can’t wait to find out whom. It’s very intense once the process starts. Did you ever feel a bit like Big Brother was watching you? Was it invasive or was it more of a case that after a while, you forgot about the cameras? I never forgot about the cameras, in my head they stopped being cameras and became people after about a week. It was strange, it took much less time to get my head around it starting than it did when it came to it stopping! How is the album being received so far? I’m delighted; it’s going down better than anything I’ve done before. What’s the inspiration behind Studio Zoo? What sets it apart from your previous albums? It’s got a very different feel; it’s raw and unprocessed and just is what it is. Before, I was trying to get on the radio and trying to fit in with certain things. This time I just stopped and did exactly what felt right and didn’t take anything into consideration. You’ve chosen ‘Losing Ground’ as the first single from the album, is this your personal favourite? To be honest, there isn’t a track I’m not proud of on this album.

With two number one albums and world tours under your belt, how do you keep yourself so grounded? I don’t know; as far I’m concerned I’m still just getting started! You’re coming to Bournemouth in February next year, we can’t wait to have you back! What’s the best gig you have ever done and why? Ooooh, that’s tricky. I just love gigs, I’m not very fussy - I’ll pretty much play anywhere! We saw you recently at Night Air at the Piers performing on Boscombe beach… did you enjoy the experience? Was that the first time you’ve performed to a beach crowd? No, I’ve done a whole bucket of beachy gigs all over the place. I had a great one at Boscombe though, the crowd were awesome. What did you listen to as a kid that inspired you to pick up the guitar? It was all my parents’ record collection, everything from John Martyn and Joni Mitchell, to Steppenwolf and ELO. If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and were allowed to take three things with you, what would you pack and why? Umm… Three guitars, obviously! I’m sure you get asked this a lot, but would you ever consider anything other than dreadlocks? (Not that we don’t love them!) Who knows, it’s hard for me to imagine not having them after this long. I’ve had them for 14 years... What’s next for you, what does the rest of the year hold? A bit of writing for other people and also some computer game music. I might try and actually take a little bit of time off, it’s been a while.

BESTIVAL

05-08 SEPTEMBER

You can always count on Bestival to round off the festival season with a bang! r Frankowski Photographer credit (inset): Victo Hats off to Rob and Josie da Bank and all the Get Involved team for such an awesome 10th birthday spectacular! Despite the occasional rain, HMS Bestival thrilled each and every attendee. Headlining acts included Fatboy Slim, Snoop Dogg (or is that Snoop Lion?) and Sir Elton John. Personal highlights included the confident and smooth Jessie Ware, the enthusiastic Bastille, musical triumph The 1975 and Chic ft. Nile Rodgers who brought true disco fever to Robin Hill Country Park. On top of an impressive line-up, I was captivated by The Port – a new arena for this year which saw the likes of Carl Cox and Annie Mac Presents DJing to hardcore ravers until the early hours of the morning.
