THE LONDON PROJECT Dominic Dickens Unit_20

THE LONDON PROJECT London, with a population of over 8 million is one of the world’s most ethnically diverse cities. As of 2007, there are over 300 languages spoken in it and more than 50 non-indigenous communities with a population of more than 10,000. The London Project explores ideas of modern immigration and human migrant movements between cities. It also explores the meaning of identity and satirically questions the idea of a ‘True Londoner’. The London project is a test of ‘Londoness’ for future Londoners entering the city. It is located just off the Isle of Grain in the Thames Estuary, at the true historic entrance to the city. It is a processing centre and government facility located at this important threshold which uses the language of the city of London in it’s architecture. formed by abstracted components and elements taken from the city such as the BT tower and 2012 olympic stadium, and also incorporates iconic London symbols.

“ I declare that the library is endless. Idealists argue that the hexagonal rooms are the necessary shape of absolute space, or at least of our perception of space” “The universe, with its elegant appointments-its bookshelves, its enigmatic books, its indefatigable staircases for the traveler, and its water closets for the seated librarian-can only be the handiwork of god.” “There are official searchers, the ‘inquisitors’. I have seen them about their tasks: they arrive exhausted at some hexagon, they talk about a staircase that nearly killed them” “I will be bold enough to suggest this solution to the ancient problem: The library is unlimited but period. If eternal an eternal traveler should journey in any direction, he would find after untold centuries that the same volumes are repeated in the same disorder - which, repeated, becomes order: The Order. My solitude is cheered by the elegant hope.

Grain Tower, about a quarter of a mile off-shore and accessible at low tide via a stone causeway, was built in 1855 during an age of rapid costal fortification and improvement as a French invasion was expected. It was fortified with the addition of an upper level in 1912 to house two 4.7inch quick-firing guns. In 1914 a floating boom comprised of a chain was strung across the Medway to prevent enemy ships from entering it. Part of this chain is now wrapped around the bottom of the tower. In 1940 the Tower had a further refit to accommodate a twin 6pdr quick-firing gun. 29 men were posted here during that time. The tower was finally disarmed and decommission in 1946. The date stone set over the entrance to Grain Tower Battery reads 1855, the tower itself was modelled on the earlier Martello towers, built along the south and east coasts to guard against invasion from Napoleonic France. The original battery was constructed from bricks encased in granite. The battery formed part of the Chatham defences protecting the Thames and Medway rivers and was flanked by two other forts, Grain fort itself on the western headland and Garrison Point fort on the eastern headland. A four storey Battery Observation Post was also constructed from reinforced concrete, with range finding apparatus mounted on the top floor. A barrack block was also added to the north side of the original tower to accommodate the increased presence necessary. The Tower was manned by 56 men and 2 officers in 1954 and closed in 1956. It was bought by local entrepreneur Simon Cooper in 2000, with the intention of using it as a hub from which to moor house boats but has since been put up for sale yet again with an asking price of £500,000. At low tide the tower can be reached by a causeway, but at high tide it is completely surrounded by water. There are five ready-use ammunition lockers in the base of the gun pit and the top of the ammunition lift is located at the rear of the emplacement, five feet below the level of the pit. urther modifications to the tower were made in July 1940 when a twin 6-pounder QF gun was installed. This was to fire on the high speed German ‘E’ and ‘S’ motor torpedo boats and Grain was one of the first sites to employ one of these recently developed guns. The gun had a very high rate of fire (60 - 120 rounds per minute) and was electrically powered with a search light mounting and director tower. The generator house was located on shore and connected to the tower by cables.

Route of shipping lanes

The south of the Isle is an important industrial area. Until 1982 it was home to a major oil refinery. Construction of this facility for British Petroleum took from 1948 to 1952, and it suffered flooding almost immediately when the North Sea flood of 1953 breached the sea wall. The site is now part-occupied by Thamesport, the UK’s third largest container port. The remainder is allocated for industrial and warehousing use under the Thames Gateway project. Yantlet Creek at the south of the Yantlet Line is the downstream limit of the City of London’s ownership of the bed of the River Thames. It is marked by a London Stone beside the mouth of the creek. Its successor for navigation purposes, the Port of London Authority also owns the river bed up to here but has navigation policing rights on a debatable area of estuary of sea to the seaside resort of Margate which is of completely normal sea salinity.
