DESIGN DISCOVERY AWARD WITH THE INAUGURAL DOMAYNE DISCOVERY AWARD, STUDENTS AT THE WHITEHOUSE INSTITUTE OF DESIGN WERE GIVEN THE TASK OF DESIGNING A ROOM BASED ON DOMAYNE’S THREE SUMMER THEMES. FIVE FINALISTS WERE CHOSEN FOR RELEVANCE, CREATIVITY AND INTERPRETATION IN BOTH THEIR INITAL DESIGN AND THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE PROCESS OF BRINGING IT TO LIFE. THE SUBMISSIONS WERE JUDGED BY DOMAYNE, HOME BEAUTIFUL AND WHITEHOUSE, AND THE COMPETITION WAS TOUGH!

AND THE WINNER IS… OLIVIA DANIELE, VIC

STYLE “My style is a mix between modern and edgy, I like to push the limits from a design perspective. Bringing nature in matters to me, so if I can include an eco story I’m happy. There was only one option for me from the themes – it had to be Green With Envy!”

ER WINN

CONCEPT “I was trying to achieve an overall green and eco-friendly atmosphere, not just with colour but by capturing the green using different plants and various green hues – even down to the moss on the table! My room has a European look to it, but also that distinct Australian summer feel for the Domayne customer.”

ASHLEA HAWKINS, VIC

RUBY KEDDIE, NSW

STYLE “Eclectic, elegant and exuberant. I like styles be adventurous, unpredictable and never, ever boring. I like a room to be playful and memorable without ever losing style. Unusual, timeless and utterly gorgeous pieces are always on my radar.”

STYLE “My style draws upon vintage elements and motifs. I’m attracted to the graphics of the Bauhaus era of the ’20s, but also the mishmash of colours from impressionist art. I like to combine the old with the new and use a neutral or organic base for my designs. This filters throughout my entire aesthetic, whether it’s art, styling or graphic design work.”

STYLE “My personal aesthetic and style is quite modern and minimal. I chose the citrus trend purely because it is so vibrant and fun. It’s the perfect representation of the upcoming summer months and I felt like I identified with it the most.”

STYLE “My style is quite masculine with small elements of my feminine side. I like rich, bold colours and statement pieces that can be softened with cute décor pieces and soft pastel colours. I chose the Green With Envy theme, as I thought it would be a challenge to work with colours and shapes that were so bold.”

CONCEPT “I chose the citrus trend because it meant I was able to play with bold colours and create a unique and unlikely room. I wanted it to feel zesty and eye-poppingly cool. This living room has a strong Parisienne feel inspired by the luxury of the Rococo era combined with some ’60s New York retro quirk, and it’s firmly cemented in the summer style of the modern Australian home.”

CONCEPT “I chose a nautical study space as it’s often overlooked. It’s nice to have a relaxed, thoughtfully designed working space – I felt the whole space hinged on the desk having a slightly lived-in feel that contrasted with the more contemporary chair.”

CONCEPT “I wanted a happy and bright space that encompassed the aesthetic of the concept and the summer trends. Through my own studies, I’ve seen a great deal of geometric shapes and patterns, vivid colours and lots of wicker. The bedroom is a sanctuary for some and being surrounded by open light with a generous amount of colour allows it to remain serene and comforting.”

CONCEPT “Quite a lot of the inspiration behind the bedroom came from international influences, such as Paris Fashion Week, the Art Deco Chrysler building and New York apartments. Pantone’s colour of the year, Emerald, was teamed with dusty pink and I used contrasting pops of black and white to add depth and masculinity.”
