Ain’t nuthin’ to f*** with

INGREDIENTS For the clams: 1kg / 35oz fresh live clams 25g / 1oz dried dulse (AKA seaweed) 1½ onions 1 leek 1 carrot 200g / 7oz streaky bacon 1 sprig of fresh parsley 1 sprig of fresh thyme 400ml / ¾ pint of water 200ml / ¼ pint of dry white wine 2 tbsp unsalted butter 1 stock cube dissolved into ½ pint of water 500g / 18oz potatoes 200ml / ¼ pint double cream (optional) SPECIAL EQUIPMENT Heat resistant bowl Metallic heat resistant colander Potato masher

METHOD

To make the chowder

To prepare and cook the clams

1. Put the stock cube dissolved in water in a pan and bring to a simmer. 2. Dice the potatoes into small cubes and add to the pan and simmer gently until cooked. 3. Slice the remaining onion and roughly slice the bacon then fry them in butter in a fresh pan over a low heat until soft. 4. Remove half the potatoes and mash them, leave the other half in the pan on a low heat. This will give you a thick, creamy mix that will thicken the whole chowder. 5. Mix the fried bacon and onion into the mashed potato. 6. Combine all the potatoes (both mashed and boiled) with the clams and vegetables in the cooked liquid to a pan, add the cream and bring the whole mix to a simmer. 7. Serve and garnish with the chopped parsley and if desired, an extra dollop of whipped cream.

1. Finely slice half an onion, the dulse, leek, carrot, parsley and thyme and add to a large saucepan. 2. Add the 400ml / ¾ pint of water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. 3. While the mix is simmering, thoroughly wash the clams under cold running water. 4. After the mix has simmered for 10 minutes, add the dry white wine. 5. Now add the clams to the saucepan, cover and boil vigorously for 1 to 2 minutes until the clams have opened. 6. Catching the cooking liquid in a heat resistant bowl or second pan underneath, drain the mix through a colander. Set the liquid aside and pull each of the clams from their shells. 7. Discard the shells, sprigs of parsley and the thyme. Return the clams and veagetables to the liquid in the heat resistant bowl. 26

THE G-WORD

FUTURE/MEMORY

FALL 2014 BY JACOB KIMVALL

SPRING 2014 BY SUPERBLAST & HELLERAU – EUROPEAN CENTER FOR THE ARTS

Why does the CIA praise graffiti as a colorful symbol of the optimism and hope of the Western World while officials in many cities describes the same phenomenon as a criminal activity and a representation of unsafety and social problems?

Future/Memory is a book about the exhibition with the same name, organized in Dresden, Germany at HELLERAU – European Center for the Arts Dresden, during the summer of 2013. Future/Memory shows the nature of artists that all stems from, and get their inspiration from street culture and urban environment.

Graffiti is a word used to denote a complex system of actions and things, which is often described as a singular phenomenon. Graffiti has been understood and evaluated in many ways, often opposing each other. Graffiti may therefor both be evoked as one of the most influential art movements on the planet, and dismissed as something that destroys private property and turns a neighborhood into slum. It is hailed as a modern day childhood adventure and denounced as gang related criminality.

Wasted objects in the street are turned into sculptures; images of children playing in the Bronx are transformed into timeless testimonies of the 1980s. Future/Memory condenses images of the past and the future taken from human urban surroundings and enlightens the importance of the artistic dialogues, their gestures and energy of street life. The artists featured in Future/Memory are Boogie, Martha Cooper, Horfée, Cody Hudson, HuskMitNavn, Cleon Peterson, Jay “One” Ramier, Skki and SuperBlast.

In his Ph.D. thesis The G-Word, art historian and former graffiti writer Jacob Kimvall studies different ways of describing and framing graffiti in four historical and cultural contexts: The graffiti writing on the Berlin wall; the Zero Tolerance on graffiti in Stockholm during the 1990s; The interactions between subcultural graffiti and the cultural and commercial interest of the institutional art world in the 1970s and 80s; The collecting, organizing and publishing of images by graffiti enthusiasts.

SCANDINAVIAN MOMENTS

A PLAYFUL INSIGHT AVIA TODAY IN D N A C S O T

SPRING 2014 BY MOMENT AGENCY

During the brightest time of the year, eight Scandinavian photojournalists jumped on separate trains and went on a collective interrail trip to explore Scandinavia. Seeking the familiar rather than the exotic, they went looking for stories in their own back yards: Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The eight photographers: Oddleiv Apneseth, Elin Berge, Johan Bävman, Pieter Ten Hoopen, Eivind H Natvig, Chris Maluszynski, Åsa Sjöström, and Knut Egil Wang formed new views of their home countries, sometimes challenging old stereotypes in the process. Letting their paths cross along the way, they explored and questioned their own ways of looking and telling stories as they for the first time worked side by side as photographers – making powerful use of their collective in working towards the common goal of the project. The result is a collection of photographic stories presented in the form of postcards from the road. A playful insight to Scandinavia today, signed Moment Agency. This first volume of Scandinavian Moments demonstrates the strength of working as a group of individual storytellers, and is the start of a series of group projects by Moment Agency, Scandinavia’s leading photojournalist agency.

TOO MUCH TOO YOUNG Lisa Lindqvist Liljedahl

THE FAITH OF GRAFFITI

UP is a Swedish graffiti magazine written in English. It’s one of the oldest graffiti magazines in the world and has since its start in 1992 been one of the most appreciated. UP gives graffiti writers a voice in society. It depicts graffiti from within, and documents a contested cultural expression for the future. Through interviews with artists, in-depth articles and carefully chosen photos UP gives an up to date view of the graffiti world of today, new trends and styles as well as historical facts and analyzes of graffiti’s place in modern society. Dokument Press eventually grew out of UP. The magazine has become a somewhat legendary voice from the street. UP is distributed internationally. For more info log on to upmag.se

WHAT IS GRAFFITI AND STREET ART? For almost thirty years, graffiti has been one of the most controversial topics in western society. Graffiti is a phenomenon that has both politicians, media and art dealers getting excited, out of anger over vandalism or the joy of sold art work. In Dokument Press lectures the participants will learn about graffiti, from its emergence in the United States to the current state of the Swedish graffiti movement and its discourse. The lecture deals with issues of taste, authority, moral panic and the important questions: How shall we share and organize our public spaces?

LECTURES - WHAT IS GRAFFITI? No other art movment has managed to stay as current and ever-controversial as graffiti. Love it or hate it. The lecture is 90 minutes long

GRAFFITI WORKSHOP A short lecture on graffiti history and current aesthetic styles provides participants with a background. To paint in large format, with the whole body, a physical effort that few other art forms offer. The workshop offers tips and tricks in the letter architecture to help the participants and to give their paintings attitude, dynamics and depth. The workshop is 4 hours long

STREET WALKS - CURIOUS ABOUT STREET ART? Who creates our urban signs and what do they mean? A street walk is a lesson in a social knowledge as much as a discussion on aesthetic, freedom of speech, public space, and moral. The tour is 120 minutes long
