ANDREA BUCCI

SCULPTURE

ANDREA BUCCI Andrea Bucci was born in 1966 in Viareggio, Tuscany on the Italian coast, where he still lives and works. The son of an artist, but self-taught in his chosen medium of terracotta, he set aside a career in architecture to place himself within the critical public eye and follow the path of an artist.

His work reveals the spontaneity of youth; but also the determination of

one who has ambitions and wants to pursue them. Since 1986, Andrea has created his art on a professional level. He works both in clay and bronze in small and monumental sculptures. Andrea actively participates in Italian artistic life, in numerous collective and individual exhibitions, and at the same time maintains and exhibits in his personal gallery in Lucca, Tuscany. Andrea’s first international exhibition was held in 2000 in Montreal, Canada, with the sponsorship of the Institute of Italian Culture. From there other exhibitions have followed in the USA and Northern Europe. In 2008 he entered and won his first public art competition in Oslo, Norway, held by the Selvaag Gruppen for their Peer Gynt Sculpture Competition. The sculpture was entitled “The Wild Buck Ride” and was installed in [L1] autumn 2010. Andrea’s sculptures feature in public and private collections in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Korea, Lebanon, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Switzerland, the USA and the UK.

ARTIST STATEMENT “During the last twenty-five years of working in my chosen vocation as an artist, I have pursued the idea of giving form and shape to my imagination. I have the inner desire to share my deepest feelings, my aesthetical ideal of what a human being can do when fascination, attention, passion, and curiosity fill our lives.” “Remember when, as children, we used our curiosity and our creativity when we played? I recall having seen the most varied and bizarre shapes emerge from aspects of light and shadows within a cloud. I have continued to play with my curiosity and my creativity. I create to show the great connection between the infinite elements of the world we live in. Clay has taken the place of the cloud; and my hands shape it as the wind shapes the cloud, so the visualisation I create to share with you can remain longer in our minds. “I have a question for you: ‘Do you believe that the wind carries out its transformations for no reason?’”

PROFILE Andrea’s efforts are focused on developing his skills and his presence in the field of Public Art at an international level. He believes that art in the open, public environment represents the most democratic form of artistic discovery and experience. Public art surrounds us in our everyday lives, and it is available to a far wider audience than just the few regular visitors to exhibitions and galleries. It shapes us, gives us impulses and creates reactions. It becomes a vital part of our visual reality. In addition, he produces one-of-a-kind, and limited edition ceramic and bronze sculptures for his own gallery in Lucca, Italy, and for selected galleries and customers worldwide. His ceramic and bronze figures have a poetic simplicity: however, every aspect has a meaning.

Certain accentuations and imperfections bestow on his finished pieces an

everyday appearance, as if the reality is that represented by the sculptor, and not vice versa.

He has enormous daring in making us accept figures and situations that seem to

come out of a book of poetry, not out of a kiln. He has a light touch and a fantastic grace in all that he presents; but he also has the drive, the energy and a comprehension of the possibilities – the end result is mastery of his medium.
