RUE T North A Report From Canada

T

he Ottawa Kennel Club is a timehonored tradition here in Canada. Indeed as Canada’s oldest dog club established in 1887 the Ottawa Kennel Club has been there through the thick and thin of it all and is a must for anyone on the campaign trail. Ottawa KC’s annual shows this past November were held in the nation’s capital of Ottawa and while this is only a 4-hour drive from Toronto and their crack smoking Mayor things here are seemingly a world away. This kennel club has been a strong force in the Canadian dog fancy for a period that now spans three millenniums. If this club has had its share of hardships it doesn’t show in the organization and effort put in to put on a gala event. One of the reasons this is a Canadian premier event to attend is the Annual Show of Shows Competition, open to ONLY all breed best in Show winners. This year marked the 47th running of the Show of Shows. Top dogs from coastto-coast flew in to attend this gala event, judged at night. The secret crew of the Ottawa 92 Dog News

KC takes down the all breed rings immediately following best in show judging on the Saturday and puts up a whole new configuration, with lights, spotlights, music and grandstands. The evening is formal and judged by an international panel of judges including Mike and Ann Jackman, Patricia and Michael Lantot, Jim Reynolds, Francis-

co Chapa, Sandy Alexander, John Hodgkinson and Rita Walker. As the news crews filed in the dogs strutted their stuff and at the end of the night the group winners were the Pointer Ch Black Alder Sam Spade, the PBGV Ch Auriga’s Rock Star, the Sibe Ch Highlander’s Rumor Has it, the Airedale Ch Westchester Hill Boy, the Frenchie Ch Foxmoor Petite Cherie Raison d’Etre, the Aussie Ch Hearthside Riveredge Sure is Summum and finally it was the Affenpinscher Ch Champagne Charly V Tani Kazari aka “Charly” who was crowned this year’s “Show of Shows” winner. This little dog is the number one toy in the country and he is really rewriting breed history here in Canada with 31 all breed best in shows to date.
