MIXED-USE HOUSING ANKARA, TURKEY D’ ARCHITECTS, 2018 M.S.ARCH ORÇUN KÖKEN DESIGN, 3D MODELLING, VISUALIZATION

Located at the end of one of the big parks in Ankara, Vadi Node project focused mainly on this intersection and enhanced the relationship between the green valley and residents. Main di direction of the living spaces and balconies are oriented towards this green axis, and additional plantation pots are provided on balcony slabs as if this greenery had a vertical expansion. On street level, the building is adjacent to an important transportation node. However, due to high elevation differences the neighbourhood has limited access to the green valley. Therefore, another decision was to create a passage bet between the valley and the neighbourhood, improving access to the park and providing a lively axis for shops on street level. The focus on the building was to emphasise a green verticality, therefore the form is designed as 2 simple interlocking masses which are separated with a vertical glass layer that expands on top and becomes differentiated housing units with la larger spaces and a panoramic view of the city and valley.

The local municipality in Erzurum asked for a culture and congress center to serve for the local community’s social and cultural activities. Erzurum, being one of the highest highe and coldest cities in Turkey, experiences harsh and cold weather in winters, hot and arid weather in summers. This extreme climate conditions were regarded as main design parameters. First of all, having a large footprint Fi area, the roof will face heavy snow loads in winter. In order to minimise this, triangulated roofs with high pitches which will direct the snow to the ground was considered. Also, heating coils are placed along ridges where whe necessary. In addition to that, the pitched roof overhangs to the front facade to reduce direct midday sunlight. Secondly, the front facade is designed as a multi-story double skin facade which contains a mechanical ventilation system. winters, the air heated by the In win mechanical system is trapped inside the air cavity. In summer, the cavity is ventilated by opening the exhausts on the roof which allows the heated air to escape and the cooled air stays between the glazings.

The project is located in the organized industrial site of Ankara, which is not far away from the city center and covers only light industry. The client asked for an office building that will accommodate different companies and serve to the area. The main design app approach arose from the existing tissue. Since it was an industrial area, most of the buildings were covered with rigid and monolithic facade elements. The initial idea was that the new building should fit within this context, yet st stand out in its own way. Therefore 2 main interlocking masses were designed, one being solid and the other transparent, both standing as monolithic masses. The transparent block is placed within the solid one in order to make it perceived as if it emerges within. This notion is enhanced at nights with light bands running along the intersections. The solid block is covered with corrugated and perforated metal sheets in reference to the context. However, to ensure contrast it has huge yellow openings distributed through out its facade and nests vertical gardens which will diminish the indu industrial perception and bring a green touch to the texture.

In the next 30 years, humanity will face difficult challenges. World changing challenges that we have never faced before in the fields of energy, climate change, food supply, gene modification, automation, future of the internet, economic disparity and city planing. However, we are survivors and we are explorers. We also want to expand our horizon by discovering and inhabiting other planets. LENT is a project for 2050s Valencia, where humanity uses rockets to travel between planets and continents. It is a future transportation hub, but also a public park, carbon dioxide capture center and an energy plant. We want to leave the earth, but also leave no trace. Within the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the space investors. The investor number has grown from 20 to 180, with an investment magnitude reaching up to 3,000 million USD. Many start-up companies are founded and adopted the re-useable rocket technology to reduce cost per flight and make commercial rocket transportation feasable. Two of the leading companies, Blue Origin and Space X are planing to start their intercontinental travel within the next decade. Our proposal takes place in 2050, where all these developments are speculated to a point where rocket travel has become a part of daily life.

EACH OF THE UNITS IS UNROLLED TO VARIOUS STRIPS AND PRODUCED AS A SINGLE PIECE TRIPLE-LAYERED TEXTILE FABRIC. EACH LAYER HAS A DIFFERENT PURPOSE SUCH AS INSULATION POCKET, INSERTINGS FOR STRUCTURAL ATTACHMENTS AND OPENINGS.

SEAMLESSLY ATTACHED PIECE WITH ITS INTERIOR SUPPORTING CABLE-NET FALSEWORK SYSTEM IS PLACED INSIDE A SCAFFOLDING FRAME AND TENSIONED WITH CABLES TO GIVE ITS FORM.

A MINIMAL SURFACE HAS THE SMALLEST POSSIBLE AREA THAT SPANS THE BOUNDARY OF THE SURFACE. SUCH AS A SOAP FILM.

PRE-DEFINED OPENINGS ON THE TEXTILE IS TENSIONED WITH CABLES AND MARKED. STRUCTURAL ATTACHMENTS ARE INSERTED INSIDE THE INTERIOR LAYER OF THE TEXTURE.

PELLETS ARE FILLED BETWEEN THE INTERIOR LAYERS OF THE TEXTILE TO INSULATE THE STRUCTURE.

THEY NECESSARILY HAVE ZERO MEAN CURVATURE. MOST OF THE MINIMAL SURFACES ARE NAMED, IN THIS CASE GYROID IS CHOSEN AS THE PRIMARY CELL.

POCKETS LOCATED ON THE EXTERIOR LAYER ARE INFLATED WITH BALOONS TO FORM A WAFFLE SHELL AND REDUCE MATERIAL USAGE.

EXTERIOR LAYER OF THE TEXTILE IS SPRAYED WITH CEMENT TO HARDEN THE FORM AND PREPARE IT FOR CONCRETE APPLICATION.

A LAYER OF CONCRETE MIXED WITH GRAPHENE FOR ADDITIONAL STRENGTH AND WITH BINDER MADE OF FLY ASH FOR FASTER CURING IS APPLIED TO EXTERIOR LAYER OF THE TEXTILE.

SOME MINIMAL SURFACES HAVE A CRYSTALLINE STRUCTURE, WHICH MEANS THEY REPEAT IN THREE DIMENSIONS, ALSO REFERRED AS TRIPLY PERIODIC.

The task was to design a faรงade for a medium story office building in a climate zone outside Europe. A challenging exercise outside ones comfort zone as a preparation for working on international projects. My chosen location was Muscat, the capital city of Oman. Muscat has a hot desert climate where hours of sunshine per day is relatively same. Throughout the year mostly cooling and dehumidification is required to reach comfort zone.

The inspi inspiration for the project is found in the surrounding landscape and vernacular architecture. The idea is to use massive clay walls as exterior thermal mass, with a pattern from the desert dunes. These panels are integrated with wooden Mashrabiyas as solar shading. Concept Image sand dunes

Production CNC clay milling

The parametrically designed surface is divided to panels for ease of production. Each panel is carved out of clay blocks with CNC machines, a similar technique being used in automotive industry. To reduce external loads on the façade, a pa parametric weight optimization is done on the back side of panels. Support attachment locations are kept untouched for structural rigidity, resulting in a waffle grid. Volume 0.155 m³ Density 2.0-2.4 g/cm³ Weight 311-373 kg

Education is commonly perceived as scholars and tutors gathering together in a certain place for knowledge and information exchange. However, I believe that an important part of self-improvement and schooling occurs within informal student spaces. spaces enhance the education These spa process and therefore is an important part of campus life. Unlike a suburban campus where this interaction occurs effortlessly between broad circulation areas and green spaces, urban campus concept lacks these student spaces. The idea is to create these informal student spaces by radiating them from a central circulation system. This concept is realized as a grand staircase passing through the mass which connects studios with lecture rooms and creates these informal spaces in between. bet
