WISDOM FOR THE NEW YEAR “We, of course, have plenty of wisdom to pass on to you once you get your feet on firm spiritual ground, but it's not popular wisdom, the fashionable wisdom of high-priced experts that will be out7 of-date in a year or so. God's wisdom is something mysterious that goes deep into the interior of his purposes. You don't find it lying around on the surface. It's not the latest message, but more like the oldest— what God determined as the way to bring out his best in us, long before 8 we ever arrived on the scene. The experts of our day haven't a clue about what this eternal plan is. If they had, they wouldn't have killed the 9 Master of the God-designed life on a cross. That's why we have this Scripture text: No one's ever seen or heard anything like this, Never so much as imagined anything quite like it— What God has 10 arranged for those who love him. But you've seen and heard it because God by his Spirit has brought it all out into the open before you. The Spirit, not content to flit around on the surface, dives into the depths of God, and brings out what God planned all along.” – 1 Corinthians 2:610 (MSG)

One of the problems Paul was facing in the Corinthian church were those who were convinced—even followers of Christ—that everyone should be able to understand the wisdom of the gospel message with their own human intellect. Unfortunately, that’s not the way spiritual things work. Just as Christ came as a revelation of God’s love, the Spirit of God (Love) must come to open our minds and hearts to the gospel. But, he can only do that as we allow him to (free will)… In 2012, we must be about what God has called us all to—here at the Grace and Dodgeville UMCs. We must first be about ‘loving God.’ That’s the first step of God’s vision for our mutual ministry here. We will be a people who—without question—love God! That will be our witness to the world; our everyday lives will reflect that truth! But, the mistake we make all too often (like those in Corinth)… is that we can do that on our own— understand what it means to ‘love God’ on our own, in our own wisdom.

What Paul is clearly telling the church at Corinth is that unless they are intimately connected to God’s Spirit—having allowed God’s Spirit to reveal God’s wisdom to them, they’ll never understand the mysteries of God—things like ‘how to love God.’ Only God’s Spirit in our lives will make that possible! So, as we begin this new year together, let me ask you this: Are you open to the Spirit of God inhabiting your life—taking up residence in you—so that you’ll begin to understand the mysteries of God—things like ‘how to love God’ with your whole life? If you are, then we can all get excited together about God’s promise to us in this verse from above (1 Cor. 2:9, NLT): “That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, ‘No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.’” Are you ready to allow God’s Spirit to work in and through you, that you might begin to understand the wisdom of God—‘how to love God.’ That’s where we have to begin. Then, we can look forward to all that God has prepared for us! And it sounds like something this ol’ world has never seen before… Lookin’ forward to learning together in the New Year,

Pastor Rom THE HOLY LAND IS ON THE HORIZON! It is not too early to begin thinking about a possible trip to the Holy Land one year from now! Pegram-Hosted Tours is announcing that they will be going to the Holy Land in January of 2013. It will be a 13-day tour, th th leaving on the 12 of January and returning home by the 24 of the month. On this tour, we will be traveling the length and breadth of the Holy Land—from the Red Sea in the south to Mount Hermon in the north, and from the Dead Sea in the east to the Mediterranean in the west. There will be new stops on this tour that we’ve not seen in the past (always a surprise!). And Malcolm Cartier, the best tour guide that Israel has to offer, will once again be guiding our tour while in the Holy Land. Please do prayerfully consider this very important opportunity—a great way to grow in your personal walk with God … by walking the land where Jesus walked! More information will be coming out soon! If you have any questions, please make sure that you ask Pastor Rom (pastorrom@dodgevilleumc.org or 608-417-0060)…

PLEASE NOTE: ADVANCED PREREQUISITE FOR TAKING THE ESSENTIAL TRANSFORMATION (E.T.) CLASS – FALL 2012! If you are interested in taking the Essential Transformation (E.T.) Class beginning fall of 2012, a prerequisite to this class—even before you get to the organizational meeting in August—is to have been active in the life of the Dodgeville United Methodist Church (UMC) for at least one year prior to the start of E.T. (i.e. regularly worshiping at one of our Sunday worship celebrations, as well as getting involved in studies/ministry of the church). [If you want to participate in E.T. this fall, since this is a new prerequisite, we will be looking at your activity in the life of DUMC starting in January 2012.] The bottom line is this: If you are seeking either to be confirmed or join the Dodgeville UMC in any way, we need to know that you are serious about living out your baptismal vows in the life of the local church [what membership is all about]. That’s why this prerequisite is so important. Thank you for considering the Dodgeville UMC as your home congregation. We look forward to growing in our knowledge and understanding of the Christian faith with you in the months ahead… Pastor Rom & Beth Schlueter, E.T. Co-Teachers

Please come to Culver’s on Monday, January 9 to support our Stephen Ministry program. Culver’s will be donating a portion of their proceeds for the day to our Stephen Ministry program to help with funding for the coming year.

PRAYER MINISTRY TEAM TO SPONSOR OPERATION SHOEBOX Happy New Year and I believe that 2012 is going to be a marvelous year as we work together for the glory of God in all we do. The Prayer Ministry Team is sponsoring the “Operation Christmas Child, Project Shoe Box” a little bit differently. We would like to have you join us as we start preparing for Christmas 2012 every month. Preparing Shoe Boxes is a time intensive activity that the entire church family can share. Our wonderful youth group and the Outreach & Mission committee have given us their support. Each month we will set before you a goal to aim at for preparing the Boxes. Here is a quick summary of some of the upcoming events. January’s emphasis will be praying for the project. In February we will give you a complete list of items

we will be collecting and we will begin collection. March, April & May we will begin the collection of small gifts for the boxes. During the summer we will evaluate what we have against what we still need. October will see us packing the boxes and preparing them for shipping. We will also have a fund raiser, date still to be determined, to help cover the shipping of each box. In 2009 we had 82 boxes, at $7.00 a box, in short $574.00

January 2012 A STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE FOR YOUR CHURCH #274

The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; Those who help others are helped. Proverbs 11:26-27 The Message

God grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the courage to change the one I can, and the wisdom to know it’s me. -Author Unknown

January is the season for New Year’s resolutions. We want to start out the New Year on the “right foot,” taking care to improve ourselves and our habits. Getting out of debt and saving money are generally two of the top ten resolutions made each year. Cuts in income seem to be the norm these days, so how do we remain faithful and generous as we set priorities in the New Year? It seems counter-intuitive but it begins by giving. Generosity breeds a positive, “can-do” attitude in us. It’s good to say thank you, even in tough times. Therefore as you make moves toward financial freedom from debt, consider: 1. Making the first payment from your check every week or month a “thank you” gift for the many blessings you’ve received. 2. Save an equal amount in an emergency savings account you can use when you truly need to overspend your regular budget for medical needs, car repairs, house repairs or emergency family travel. Some folks find that giving 5% of their income to the church and saving another 5% each week or month in an emergency fund can be a helpful spiritual tool as they take responsibility for their finances. If you’d like help in meeting your financial New Year’s resolution, sign up today to attend the two-hour Freed Up From Debt Workshop sponsored by the Foundation on January 29th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm or January 30th from 3:00 – 5:00 pm in Room 305 of the Conference Center in Sun Prairie. Cost is $8.00. Everyone is welcome! Call us to register and to get more information: 1-888-903-9863 or wumf@wumf.org

WHY ARE FEELINGS SO IMPORTANT IN OUR COMMUNICATION? Did you ever notice how you react when your spouse walks in the door with a wrinkled brow and a sad or angry look? You might think, “What did I do now?” Or, “What is bothering him or her?” The point is we see the behavior and we react to it; not understanding what caused the behavior. The Marriage Encounter Weekend helps you to understand why. The trip is being planned by Divine Savior UMC in Madison and will be their fifth mission trip to Mexico. To find out more about the mission activity you can visit the mission's website http://www.gytte.org - pay particular attention to information about the A.W.A.R.E. program. Mentors needed for Homeless Shelter The Iowa County Homeless Prevention Coalition is looking for volunteers to mentor families/individuals who are living in the homeless shelter and/or transitional housing. If you would like to assist a family in their efforts to find consistent and safe place to call home, this may be an opportunity for you to serve. Mentors would plan to meet at least weekly with their mentee over a period of 2 - 6 weeks. One could expect to work with 2 to 3 families over a course of a year. The primary responsibility would be to provide moral support and assistance in moving beyond the issues that cause homelessness. Training and resource will be provided.
