From your President 2015 has been a great year for the Helensburgh Tigers. Our club was able to field five sides this season, first grade, reserve grade, under 19’s colts and this season two women’s teams, one in the Illawarra and a side in the NSWRL competition based in Sydney. The Illawarra Ladies team developed throughout the season with Colin Doran as coach and made it to the grand final. It was a tough year for the girls as the majority had never played rugby league before. It was excellent to see how the experienced players supported the new players to the club. As a club we couldn’t be prouder of the girls who came and gave rugby league a go this year and the way they fought all year is a true credit to how far they developed. The NSWRL ladies with Daniel Robberds coaching had a competitive season. When the competition split into two divisions the girls were in the top division. Once again our club saw how good these girls really are and many new girls got a taste of representative footy. There was a lot of travelling but they represented not only Helensburgh but also the Illawarra and showed that this region is more than competitive. Unfortunately their season ended in the semi finals to a very strong and powerful Redfern team. The colts side this season only had one player returning from last season, with the side predominantly been made up of last year’s under 17’s team. Added to that some new players joined the club and fitted in straight away. Under the guidance of Jarrod Potter the boys really developed this season and made the final. Some of the boys got a taste of first grade and reserve grade this season and I am sure the boys will be back bigger and better next season. Reserve grade coached by Gavin Lennon once again had a great season. With a mix of youth and experience the boys found their groove and put together some great performances. Finding it hard to play constant footy, with the weather and the draw, the boys managed to put some great footy together and saw them reach yet another grand final. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and not the end to the season the boys were hoping for. First grade had an outstanding season. Coach Ryan Powell put an extremely competitive squad together this season which saw first grade take out the minor premiership. The new players got on board to our clubs culture from the get go. The depth of our club was tested during the season and everyone that stepped up into the top grade did a great job. ϮϬϭϱWƌĞƐĞŶƚĂƟŽŶHelensburgh TIGERS

This season’s success saw many of our players reach representative honours. The club saw the rewards for the on field success with Steve McCallum, Wayne Bremner, Azan Turoa, Jarrod Boyle, Chris Lewis, Blake Phillips and Jokatama Dokonivalu all representing the Illawarra in the country championships. Steve McCallum and Azan Turoa gained selection in the country seconds side and travelled to Darwin while Jokatama Dokonivalu, Jarrod Boyle, Wayne Bremner, Chris Lewis and Azan Turoa all travelled to Fiji to represent country 1sts and played two matches against the Fiji residents’ team. Sam Hammond, Ruan Simms, Kezzie Apps, Alanna Ferguson, Maddison Studdon, Shani Sleeman and Corbin McGregor played for NSW against Queensland. This season we had four players who represented our club on the international arena with Sam Hammond, Ruan Simms and Kezzie Apps playing for the Australian Jillaroos while Blake Phillips represented Malta. From me, a massive thank you to everyone who helped with the off field running of the football club this season. The on field success cannot be gained without the tireless work from the backbone of the club, canteen workers, the bbq workers, raffle sellers, bar attendants, event and function organisers, time keepers, call box operators, score board attendants, team managers, water runners and strappers who all sacrifice many hours to contribute what they can to the club they love. Without you none of our success this year would have been possible. To long time club strapper Daz Watt who isn’t returning as he is taking up a full time roll with the Illawarra Cutters, I wish you all the best in your future endeavours while a special mention has to be made for Dorian (Dodge) Cobb who will not be returning as Treasurer for season 2016. Dodge’s effort and commitment to the Tigers has been a major reason why the club has been able to remain competitive, so thank you Dodge. All of our five sides made it to the finals this season and to finish a First grade Premiership, Minor Premiership, Club Championship and the inaugural challenge cup has made this season one to remember. It will be hard to top the effort and achievement from this season but like always the Tigers will be back, bigger and better next season.

Daniel Robberds – Women’s Coach (Sydney Met) After years of domination in the Illawarra, we accepted the challenge to take on the best women’s teams in Sydney. With a new look team and a new coach we went in with the hopes to make our presence known. And we did just that. The season started off positively with a win over Redfern in the Corrimal 9’s. Our speed and skill were too much for their big pack, but it was our defence that was most impressive. This gave us all the confidence in the world as we headed into the regular season. Despite narrowly going down to last season’s runners-up Redfern in Round One, we knew we were going to be in the mix despite obvious differences to the other teams. At times we struggled to field a full side and the girls were forced to defend relentlessly and this proved quite testing. To the girls’ credit, they matured as defenders and made sure the teams worked for every single metre. Big wins against Maitland, Berala, Forestville, Penrith and Berkeley Vale took us into the top of the ladder and we were placed nicely for a crack at the title in our first season. Many of our girls were rewarded with representative honours midway through the season with Allana Ferguson, Corban McGregor, Ruan Sims, Shani Sleeman and Samantha Hammond selected in the NSW Women’s Origin side – who recorded a draw with Queensland! A huge effort by our girls. As we headed into the business end of the season, the games became tougher and tougher and unfortunately, we went down narrowly to Redfern in the elimination semi-final and this brought out season to an abrupt halt. Despite this, the girls were extremely proud of ϮϬϭϱWƌĞƐĞŶƚĂƟŽŶHelensburgh TIGERS

6

themselves and the way they played throughout the season. Their ability to match their speed and skill with dogged and aggressive defence was what made this season such a positive one. Congratulations to all the girls for accepting the challenge, for playing with guts and determination every single week and for letting the Sydney doubters know that we are a team to watch out for. Good luck to all the girls selected in off-season representative squads. You are all extremely talented players and we wish you all the best.

Finally, a big thank you to everyone who made this season possible. To the committee, my assistant coach Corey Whitaker, my stand-in water runners Maddie Studdon, Samantha Hammond and John Piper, my stand-in managers Brooke Robberds and Emma Tonegato and to all the family and friends who supported us this season. My biggest thank you, however, must go the heart and soul of women’s rugby league in our community – Georgie Brooker. Without this girl this team would not have existed, they wouldn’t have bonded and they wouldn’t have believed in themselves. She is everything you could want in a captain and a Helensburgh Tiger through and through. Thank you for everything you bloody star!

Col Doran – Women’s Coach (Illawarra) What a great year these bunch of women achieved. We lost the grand final 20-16 to Corrimal, finished with no fit reserves and played at stages of the game with only 12 players. The Tiger Lillies fielded two teams this year with the majority of the team from last year’s premiership winning side playing for Helensburgh in the Sydney competition. We started the year not knowing what to expect, only 6 girls were left from the previous year and 11 women who have never played rugby league. Firstly, I cannot thank four special players enough (Kezzie, Erin, Jasmin & Georgie) for the way they held this team together and helped develop the 11 new players. KEZIE APPS, she travels 5 hours from Bega each week to play, her presence on the field inspires everyone, the qualities she displays as a person and team player are exceptional. ERIN BLACKWELL is one of the most dedicated players I have seen, the do or die effort she displays on the field is outstanding, she never misses a training session. JASMIN SARIN was the Captain, her leadership on the field was inspirational, she always led by example and never avoided the hard stuff. GEORGIA BROOKER, is a remarkable person, she played for both teams each week, helped with the coaching and nothing was ever too hard for her. Not only is she a talented footballer she is a tireless club person.

I believe every one of the eleven new players improved each week especially Cassidy Smith, Monique Hasuik, Lizzy Astill, Chloe Spajic, Nikeah Pearce and Franzi Hass. Emily Smith, Melissa Rogers & Larrissa Muldoon experience from having played the previous year was very helpful. Donna Thwaite, Tayla & Tiffany Temminck played their best football towards the semis. Unfortunately we lost players (Chaq Davis, Jess Worthington & Tiarnne Lightowlers) through injury and personal reasons but the team still remained positive. A big thank you to Georgie Booker who played 9 games for us and every game for the Sydney team and Kate Mullaly for helping out when needed. Thanks John Piper for all your help at training and on game day. Big thank you to our manager Kerrie Blackwell for being so efficient and organised. Adam Thwaite & Ryan Powell for water running. Congratulations to Kezzie Apps and the Sydney girls mentioned on representing NSW & Australia this year and Erin Blackwell for winning the Illawarra Player of the Year. 2016 will be another successful year for these girls if they stay together and encourage their friends to play. Lastly thank you to all the people who contributed off the field resulting in a very successful year. Col Doran

Jarrod Potter - Colts Coach I would firstly like to start by congratulating the Helensburgh Tigers Club on a great year. Winning a first grade premiership and a Club championship, along with all the other team and individual player achievements is a huge credit to all involved in the club. A big thankyou to all the committee, helpers, strappers, trainers, coaches, managers and everyone else who has contributed to this great club. It is greatly appreciated by the whole under 19’s squad. The under 19’s are a very hard working group of young men. Never shying away from a hard training session or a quality opposition, the boys produced a high standard of football this year. This was rewarded with the team advancing to one game shy of the grand final, a huge achievement in a competition that is of the highest standard. Congratulations on achieving this feat boys, it is something you can all hold your head high about as every single player has contributed to this success.

There is plenty of talent in this under 19’s football team. There are players here that have the potential to play at a very high level. With three boys selected throughout the year to play at stages with the first grade squad, and another five to play with the reserve grade team, there are defiantly the makings of handy footballers within the team and I hope every player of the under 19’s continue to keep playing rugby league as they all have a lot to offer. A big thankyou to the under 19’s support staff in Lewis, Tim, Tira, Magoo and John. You all have contributed to this team in a huge way and not only are I thankful for your help but the boys are too. Thank you to also Ryan Powell and Gavin Lennon for helping myself throughout the year it was greatly appreciated.

When taking on the Job as the under 19’s Coach, I was certain in my own mind I would have one or two boys in the team that would cause me some headaches, whether it be through attitude or just young boys being boys. This was far from the fact however. I can honestly say I have never met a better group of young men. The boys are a credit to their families in the way they conduct themselves on and off the football field and I truly hope to see these men running out for the Helensburgh Tigers in Future years.

Gav Lennon – Reggies Coach 2015 was a season that we can look back on and be pretty proud of in reserve grade. We certainly made the most of what can best be described as a very disrupted year. Once again the draw was very unfavourable with way to many weeks off dispersed throughout the season making it very tough to find any rhythm - not to mention the amount of injuries throughout the club and the loss of players to first grade, cutters and 20's. Firstly, a massive congratulations and thank you to Powelly and the guys from first grade firstly for getting the reward you all deserve and also helping us out all year with players never afraid to put themselves out to play for us before backing up for first grade. A big thank you also to Potts and the Colts boys who were also willing to help out whenever needed. There was no shortage of talent in that team and with you guys coming through the future of the club is certainly in good hands. Finally, the biggest thank you must go to the committee, sponsors and all the helpers in and around the club. The work you guys put in is truly amazing and without you not only would we not have the success we have had this year, we simply would not exist. In particular I'd like to thank the guys who have been getting us on the park since the day I turned up at this club 13 years ago in Daz and Clav. To our guys. To put it bluntly, we were ripped off at the end of the year and should have finished as minor premiers which was a massive achievement in a reserve grade competition that would undoubtedly trump majority of first grade competitions in any other region. Unfortunately we were beaten on Grand Final day by a team that simply out played us. Considering the level of talent in that team (including an international), not to mention the money that these guys were getting paid, we can certainly hold our heads high knowing we gave it everything we had.

ϮϬϭϱWƌĞƐĞŶƚĂƟŽŶHelensburgh TIGERS

I couldn't be prouder of the guys who took the field for us this year. We had a real mix of experience levels in the team this year with a number of guys who hadn't played since juniors, boys who weren't even old enough to drink and other guys who were coming back from 1st grade and representative levels. Each and every week everyone really bought in to what it meant to be a Reggie boy and had a lot of fun out there with their mates which is the greatest part of footy. It would have been easy for the inexperienced guys to take a back seat and let the season pass them by, but they didn't. They gave it their all every week, continually improving with each of you carving out really impressive years. It would have also been easy for the experienced guys to remove themselves from the newer guys and create their own little click, but they didn't. They took real pride in helping the inexperienced guys become better players and in turn making us a better team. One game that summed up the character of this team was the win against Berkeley where we went into the game short on numbers and a majority of the boys playing out of position. We had half backs playing in the front row. Front rowers on the wing. It didn't phase us though. We threw caution to the wind and backed ourselves. It has been a real pleasure coaching this team over the past 4 years. We have had more success than I ever imagined and I have been lucky enough to make friends that I will have for the rest of my life. Hopefully most of you will be back next year to go one step further and win our trophy back. To those of you who are retiring or moving on, thanks for everything you have done for this club. Whether it was one season or 10, you are a massive part of this club and will always be one of the Reggie Boys. Last but not least. Thanks to my support crew. Without you guys I would have lost the plot ages ago. My assistant coach Muz, manager Gator, right hand man Johnny Muscles, mood lightener Chrisso, leader of the bunch Grovey and his sidekick Fitz. Ryan Powell - Head Coach First off for this year to be such a success I need to thank all that's been involved both on and off the field, from players, trainers, committee , coaches, BBQers , managers and all those people that got us home back in September. Our supporters!!! Not starting till January was the break the boys needed after their disappointing finish to 2014. But once again it wasn't until that Canberra trip that people got the urge to go one better. Our trial form was a pretty good indicator of the year ahead and the boys didn't back off in the early rounds scoring some amazing try's and averaging just 8 against. Rnd 5. A third of the season down and our form was off but what would hit us harder was the injuries. From broken jaws , collar bone, sternums, wrists, knees, hands, fingers and everything in between. We had them all. Through all grades. This is where the outsiders doubted us but we had player after player take to the field and get the job done and the team was to go on an 11 game winning streak, winning everything there was to win. First the challenge cup then with 3 games left wrapped up the minor premiership as well as club champions and getting ready for the finals. With some players returning to the field at this crucial time there were some very tough calls to be made but the way the guys worked off the field made my choices for me. Going into first semi definitely felt the pressure but the boys seemed to be relaxed. In patches we played well but just not in long enough periods and Wests got the points JUST in a game where we knew we could HAVE done things better but with that loss now we needed to face Thirroul. The way the week went who knew how that Saturday night was going to play out. Boyle was back which was a massive gain but on Thursday we lost smith to suspension, and Keelan was in NZ for a

18

wedding. Turns out our club had too much depth for Thirroul with Macca blowing them off the park (not with goal kicking) and we were set for the GF in 15 The week was low key with most of the boys injured but all new there roles and were committed to get them done regardless of how their bodies felt. The game was tight and on the back of our poor completion rate Wests had all the field and the early points. But with all the field they had they didn't score enough for our team to drop their heads. The inclusion of rapes was a huge boost to our good ball. Half time was the break we needed to take a breath, fix a couple small things in D and get confidence from each other we had the points in us, from then on it was some very committed players and a million very vocal fans that got us home!!! We had an unbelievable season and we had great success which was capped off with some individual reward with Brem, Zun, Boyle, Lewis , Boof , Jok, and Tower in the Illawarra team, tower and Zun in country 2s and Brem , Zun, Boyle , Lewis , Jok travel to Fiji with the firsts team, plus the Illawarra player of the year was Grant warrior Smith It's been a great year for the Tigers right through the club.2 girls teams that both did themselves and the club very proud Our 19s led by Potts who had a mixed year but when push came to shove a great team and only just fell short of the big one. Reggies led by the great Gav had a up and down year with so many injuries at the club and going 2 months with no footy still found themselves in the GF and fought till the final whistle. Turns out 2015 really was the year of the tiger and I look forward to the challenge of the 2016 season ahead

PERPETUAL AWARDS

Rookie of the Year Women’s Auxiliary trophy

To Qualify for Rookie of the year, the player must have played as a Local Junior in the Helensburgh JRLFC. Rookie of the year is awarded to a local Junior who has distinguished himself in a Grade team during the current season for the first time in his career. This does not include U18s, U19s/Colts. The decision to nominate and award the Rookie of the year award is to be made by a sub-Committee comprising ‘on-field’ Coaching staff and ‘offfield’ Committee members. If no players qualify for this award for a particular season, the award will not be given.
