THE AI JUGGERNAUT
There’s no better testament to the transformative fait accompli on display at this year’s show than the normalization of AI in just about every facet of operations.
“From the AI Innovation Pavilion to sessions across the show floor, we’re highlighting AI’s role in content creation, workflow automation and audience engagement,” Chupka said.
“The AI Video Editing Workshops and expanded Creative AI track at Post|Production World will provide hands-on training with tools like Descript, Runway, Premiere Pro and Firefly, helping professionals integrate AI into their editing, VFX and animation workflows.”
Conference sessions hosting AI-related discussions about security, content integrity and copyright protection will be front and center.
For the rapidly growing number of TV station groups that have grown comfortable with their ability to validate and implement AI solutions in day-to-day operations, the show’s emphasis on AI will be right in stride with what they’re looking for.
AI is “saving time and enhancing workflows,” Christina Hartman, vice president of emerging technology operations at E.W. Scripps, said. “The big story about AI in the newsroom is it’s revealing how much time we’ve been wasting on processing, on versioning to take a story to multiple platforms, on reviewing large documents.”
WEST HALL PRESENCE FOR BROADCASTERS
Indeed, no sector is more affected by the transition to the new M&E reality than television and radio broadcasters. NAB Show has gone to new lengths to address their needs, starting with arranging a more convenient location for broadcast-related conference sessions.
This year’s lineup, including the Broadcast Management track, the Broadcast Engineering & IT Conference and the Small and Medium Market Radio Forum, as well as the NAB Member Town Hall and Member Lounge, will be located in the TV and Radio HQ on the second floor of the West Hall.
On the show floor below, Chupka said, attendees will find “the majority of radio exhibits, broadcast innovation discoverable in Futures Park and top-notch thought leaders speaking on the Main Stage, including the NAB Show Welcome session and We Are Broadcasters ceremony.”
NAB Show intensifies the emphasis on ATSC 3.0 under the NextGen TV brand with a major presence in the West Hall amid anticipation that the new administration in Washington will forge a regulatory climate more favorable to broadcasters. With ATSC 3.0 signals now available to 77% of U.S. households, the show will serve to “highlight how forward-looking policies can accelerate these
advancements and ensure local stations remain at the forefront of serving our communities,” Chupka said.
Many station groups will be doing all they can at the show to connect the benefits of new technology with their pursuit of regulatory goals. Sinclair Broadcast Group, for example, will likely be taking a “very strong public stance” highlighting the need for NextGen TV, said Sinclair Senior Vice President, Advanced Technology Mark Aitken, who also serves as president of Sinclair’s all-IP platform subsidiary One Media Technologies.
Sinclair will make the case that it’s time for the government to sunset ATSC 1.0, buttressed by the fact that the NextGen TV transition is essential to making the Broadcast Positioning System a national security backup to GPS. Aitken also notes Sinclair will highlight opportunities for broadcasters to exploit the ATSC 3.0 data delivery system with support from the new EdgeBeam Wireless joint venture formed by Scripps, Gray Media, Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair. ●
Navigating the 2025 NAB Show
With the long-running Las Vegas Convention Center rehab still underway, this year the Central Hall will be closed to NAB Show visitors. Show exhibits and floor events will be located in the West, North and Lower South Halls, with conference sessions convening in the West Hall upper-level meeting rooms and a Radio and TV HQ section serving broadcasters’ interests on West Hall’s second floor. Traversing the distances across the complex will again be greatly facilitated by underground transport provided by the Tesla fleet buzzing through the Vegas Loop.
HANDS-ON LEARNING

CineCentral Fuses Tools and Technique
Attendees gain practical experience to enhance storytelling
By Mark Hallinger NAB SHOW DAILY
Of the sea changes that have enveloped the media industry over the last several years, the concept that “everybody is a storyteller” looms large. While storytellers need tools, and the democratization of these tools gets an awful lot of attention, technique remains critical.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s shooting on an iPhone or if it’s shooting on IMAX, and everything in between, you need to know how to
get a story from script to screen,”
Kristin Petrovich, president of Createasphere and the producer of CineCentral, said.
“You still need to know how to block a scene. You still need to know how to use the camera to communicate emotion.”
CineCentral — located in North Hall this year — is designed to provide a bit of synthesis between tool and technique, with live demos, expert-led training and hands-on learning for storytellers, whether they call themselves cinematographers, directors, camera
operators or content creators.
Being “expert-led” is not posturing. “What’s unique about CineCentral is that we have instructors who are working professionals. They’re not professional instructors, they’re on set making content that we all see every day,” Petrovich said.
The hands-on nature of the CineCentral realm is robust. One improvement from last year is a doubling in the number of “craft clinics” to more than 20 this year. Craft clinics are open and free to anybody attending NAB Show.
They run for about 45 minutes and focus on production topics such as shooting with film, film loading, lighting and more. The clinics are generally hands-on, and you get to be part of a limited number of people who will learn a technique in less than an hour.
“If you’re attending NAB, you can just pop in, take a craft clinic, then come back the next day and take a different craft clinic or a workshop,” Petrovich said.
David Frederick
Distinct from the clinics, workshops predominantly are presented by Kodak and the Society of Camera Operators (SOC). These paid sessions are an opportunity for truly deep, immersive dives on a subject. There are four “labs” at CineCentral where workshops will take place. Petrovich said the labs will be used in a more dynamic fashion this year, with participants able to really touch gear, look at footage and talk to professionals.
DEEPER DIVES
“Last year was pretty darn dynamic, but we really stepped it up this year,” she said. While same-day registration for the paid workshops is available, these can fill up, so she strongly encourages preregistration.
David J. Frederick, SOC, provides an example of a speaker who brings significant experience. He is presenting at sessions that include “Designing and Executing THE Action Shot” and “Getting Cinematic Looks on a Tight Budget.” His decades of experience include shooting with every camera and format of film and digital, and more than 20 years as an active board member of SOC.
“The Society of Camera Operators will once again be providing valuable real-world craft skills at the in-depth workshops,” said Frederick. “The presenters are professionally accomplished and award-winning camera operators

at the top of the craft. It brings me great pleasure to continue paying it forward to the next generation of cinematographers.”
Shanele Alvarez, SOC, has extensive experience across genres that include scripted, unscripted reality, documentary and live shows. She’s part of the presentation team at sessions about remote head operation with a joystick and operating handhelds. She emphasizes skills that keep jobs coming.
Alvarez said that expertise with a joystick opens doors to
roles in live broadcasts, corporate events and sports television, as well as specialty shots in film and television. She said the handheld workshop is a “musthave” for handheld operating, no matter what genre an attendee works in.
“You will learn to master handheld camera techniques, essential skills like ergonomics, balance, and proper posture, how to shoot with multiple cameras and effective communication with your

team,” she said. “Learning these skills will provide longevity and success as a handheld operator.”
Alvarez and Dawn Fleischman, SOC, will present a session on women camera operators that seeks to give attendees real experience with the capture technology and techniques that can be found on any production from reality to features.
“The Women’s Camera Operating Workshop, open to all, is designed to empower participants with hands-on gear experience and the skills to communicate effectively with your camera team for smooth shot execution,” Alvarez said. “Through this course, you’ll gain the confidence and expertise needed to step onto any set and succeed as a versatile camera operator.”
Organizations supporting CineCentral include the Society of Camera Operators (SOC), PERG and ICG Local 600. PERG, Band Pro and Adorama are also hosting receptions. Many organizations including Adorama, Zeiss, Fujifilm, Tiffen, Kodak, Chapman Leonard, JL Fisher, Blackmagic Design and more are participating in craft clinics or in other ways. ●

TV SPORTS SHIFTS
Streaming has become a bigger piece of the distribution mix for top national sports properties like the NFL, even though traditional platforms like broadcast still draw more eyeballs.
How Cord-Cutting Is Changing The TV Sports Distribution Game
As cable regional sports networks face business challenges, properties are making a move to broadcasters and streamers
By R. Thomas Umstead NAB SHOW DAILY
The rise of streaming services in the TV sports distribution arena has ignited a fierce battle for rights, reshaping how sports content is produced, delivered and viewed across multiple platforms.
As the NAB Show Sports Summit gets started today, the acquisition and distribution of live TV sports content remains fluid as traditional TV distributors and streamers continue to volley for valuable properties.
“The projections are that more than $12 billion is going to be spent
this year on sports rights because there’s going to be a lot more competition among the biggest platforms for premiere [live TV sports] rights,” Cathy Rasenberger, co-founder of media consulting firm Rasenberger Media LLC, said.
Streaming services have aggressively gone after distribution deals for national live sports properties. A recent Nielsen Gracenote report documents the trend, stating that five leading SVOD services — Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, Netflix and Paramount+ — increased the collective volume of live sports programming available via their services
by 72% since the end of 2024.
“Live sports programming continues to be an important driver of user growth, retention and engagement for streaming services,” Gracenote Chief Product Officer Bill Michels said.
With Amazon scoring an 11year deal for NBA rights starting in 2025-26, and with Netflix securing exclusive U.S. rights to the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027 and 2031, industry observers say that streaming will remain a major player in the distribution of live sports programming.
Streamers are also expected to compete for MLB’s upcoming
slate of games available after the 2025 season, as ESPN in February opted out of its current baseball television deal, which otherwise would have run through 2028.
STREAMING ISN’T ENOUGH
But TV sports analyst Lee Berke said sports content distributors still can’t completely reach loyal and casual fans without broadcasters and other traditional TV providers.
“Streaming is absolutely critical as a complement to distribution on broadcast and cable,” he said.
“You’ve got to be able to reach them on streaming if you’re going to get younger demos from a team stand-
Candice Ward/Getty Images
point or a league standpoint, your next generation of fans.
“In addition, from a business standpoint, you want to be able to sell advertising and you need digital ad sales and digital sponsorship. So there’s money to be made if you can establish streaming.”
Meanwhile, the regional sports business continues to evolve as teams look beyond the struggling pay TV RSN model for the most cost-effective ways to reach their fans. Even as Diamond Sports in January emerged from bankruptcy and somewhat stabilized what has been a freefall for RSNs, pro teams continue to look for alternatives to the challenged cable-based outlets. Broadcasters such as E.W. Scripps, Tegna, Gray Media and Weigel have taken advantage of this, striking deals with major league teams in their markets.
Teams like the NBA’s Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz and the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights and Utah Hockey Club continue to supplement local broadcast coverage with streaming, an option that continues to remain viable for teams in local markets, according to Berke.
“The ongoing collapse of the regional sports network business
has led to an increasing amount of local sports being offered OTA on broadcast television, which potentially puts the games and advertisers for those games in front of more eyeballs than through subscription-based cable networks,” he said.
As has happened nationally, streaming will play an important role in increasing the value of local sports programming by offering content that goes beyond the on-the-field action.
“I think it’s imperative to provide a subscription service in addition to the regional cable service to access the growing group of fans who may have not subscribed to cable, or are cord nevers,” YES Network VP of Strategy and Business Development Matt Duarte said.
YES last fall joined forces with another New York City-based RSN operator, MSG Networks, to launch the subscription streaming service Gotham Sports. It offers direct-to-consumer access to YES, TV home of the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Nets; MSG, home to the New York Knicks and New York Rangers; and MSGSN, which televises New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils games.
Why This Matters
The heated competition between streaming and linear broadcast and cable will have major ramifications on consumption of live sports content as viewers watch their favorite teams across multiple platforms.
Once the purview of the traditional cable bundle, marquee leagues are seeing billions from services such as Prime Video, Netflix, Apple TV+ and Disney+ for the right to stream their games. That’s proven frustrating for fans who now must subscribe to even more platforms to watch their favorite teams.
A Hub Sports Survey reported that 69% of viewers watched at least some live games on streaming services, as more big sports properties struck deals with those plaftorms. Last year, more than 70% of viewers watched sports on broadcast and cable services compared to 62% for SVOD services.
While cable regional sports networks and broadcasters still distribute most live events, teams and leagues are exploring opportunities to distribute live local games via streaming. Major League Baseball will stream local games for 22 teams via its MLB.tv direct-to-consumer app this season.
Platforms such as FAST could further disrupt the sports distribution model by offering leagues an outlet to reach viewers with free, advertiser-supported shoulder content and eventually live event action. Already the four major leagues have dedicated services running on FAST platforms like Tubi, The Roku Channel and Pluto TV, and in February, Fox-owned Tubi TV aired the Super Bowl live.
“As viewing habits continue to evolve, to have a foothold both across the cable and the digital ecosystems to us is vital as we continue to grow that base,” Duarte said.
Free Ad-Supported Television channels are another emerging platform in sports distribution. An October 2024 Amagi Global FAST Report found that the hours of live sports content offered on FAST channels are up 65% from the prior year.
FAST TAKES THE FIELD
FAST platforms such as Pluto TV, The Roku Channel and Tubi have gotten in on the action, as well as
RSNs like Boston-area channel NESN. The NESN Nation FAST channel now offers 30 hours of live and original programming each week, even outside of the New England home TV territory of its teams, the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins.

Podcasting is undergoing some serious changes. Are you ready for them? And are you ready to benet? I take a closer look at the most important trends right now and what you really need to know.”
JOHN WORDOCK | FOUNDER, JOHN WORDOCK MEDIA LLC
“The fact that the NFL Super Bowl was live on Tubi and generated 13 million viewers indicates that there is a very large audience of viewers who want to get their sports content on free streaming platforms,” said Rasenberger, who co-founded the upstart FAST Sports service Free Live Sports. The service offers 100-plus FAST channels featuring such sports as boxing, tennis, cornhole, pro wrestling, soccer and motorsports.
“I think in many ways the Super Bowl performance validated the opportunity for advertisers and for sports leagues on the FAST platform,” Rasenberger said. “Distributors need to be ubiquitous in their distribution strategy, and free offerings are becoming increasingly dominant for many viewers’ television habits.” ●

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT NMOS IN AN IP WORLD
❱ W2831 Theater 3
If you’ve worked with NMOS, you know that AMWA’s Networked Media Open Specifications (NMOS) make it possible to control IP networks in much the same way you’re used to in SDI, such as router control panels and keeping track of video sources and receivers in the network. That said, you’ve also likely faced some of the challenges that can come up with SDP files within NMOS, such as getting all the receivers and transmitters to register themselves into the registry server and making that data available to the external control system so you can use your existing panels and equipment. Likewise, what do you do when you push Source, Destination, Take and nothing happens? How do you make sure that the SDP file is valid, formatted correctly and not malformed?
Join this session to find out:
• Why do you need NMOS and how can you apply it within your 2110 workflows?
• How can you spot and prevent common NMOS/SDP problems?
• What are the basics you need to know about NMOS?
• How to use analysis tools that will help you in monitoring NMOS?
• What do you need to know when it comes to NMOS troubleshooting and error reporting?

EVOLUTION OF NMOS FOR ST 2110 AND IPMX
❱ W2831 Theater 3
SMPTE ST 2110 and IPMX have emerged as key technologies enabling flexible and scalable AV over IP
infrastructures to be deployed for broadcast and ProAV. NMOS is the control layer that makes it plug and play. The latest advancements in NMOS take it to a new level, surpassing the level of control provided in SDI and HDMI while also adding a layer of security that has been sorely needed in control systems for quite some time.
It also addresses the needs of the system integrator and studio builder, enabling automatic discovery of important services required to configure endpoints automatically on startup.
More recently, features have been added to ensure stream compatibility, address compressed video of multiple types, support EDID management for IPMX, and the most radical advancement, extending to device configuration and control.
This session will dive into the details about what NMOS is, how it works and then look at where it is going and how it adds significant value to the system designer and integrator.

STATE OF STREAMING
A Maturing Streaming Business Pivots to Pro ts
As online video platforms consolidate and heavy up on sports, they’re shedding their growth-over-everything mindset
By Addie Morfoot NAB SHOW DAILY
It’s been a pivotal 12 months for the streaming industry. In addition to further consolidation and bundling, there has been a proliferation in live sports on streamers across the board. But arguably the biggest development is that legacy media company streamers (plural) have become profitable after struggling for years.
Hulu, Disney+, Paramount+ and Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max all reported profits in 2024. Up until now, Netflix was the only profitable streamer in the game.
Despite the competition, Netflix is still winning the streaming wars. In the fourth quarter, Netflix added 19 million subscribers and reported $10.2 billion in revenue, up from
$8.8 billion the previous year.
Hulu and Disney+, Paramount+ and Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max finally found their footing and broke through the profit barrier for various reasons, including international growth, content management and diversified revenue streams.
In the final quarter of 2024, Disney+ and Hulu made a combined profit of $293 million compared with a loss of $138 million the year prior. Overall streaming revenue for The Walt Disney Co., owner of both platforms, totaled $6.07 billion, a 9% increase. And while Disney+ lost 700,000 customers worldwide, Hulu gained 1.6 million.
In the fourth quarter, Paramount+ gained 5.6 million new subscribers.
The streamer’s revenue soared in Q2 with a gross profit of $26 million and nearly doubled in Q3 with $49
million. Paramount+ parent Paramount Global said its merger with Skydance Media should close in the first half of 2025.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Discovery added 6.4 million global streaming subscribers in Q4, while the company’s fourth-quarter streaming revenue, led by SVOD platform Max, totaled $2.65 billion, up 5% year to year.
“These streaming services are finally getting to profitability, and that’s big,” said Dan Rayburn, a streaming media expert and chairman of the NAB Show Streaming Summit. “But we have to watch that because not all of them are making money. Peacock is still losing a lot of money, and some of the ones that are cash-flow positive are only by just a little bit. So having one or two profitable

quarters doesn’t mean that’s a profitable business.”
One of the key factors in streamers’ newfound profitability was price hikes across all platforms, including Netflix, which increased rates on all three of its subscription plans, including its advertising-supported tier.
Raising pricing allowed the streaming industry to shift from a growth-over-everything approach to a maintainable, profit-driven model.
But, according to Shasta Cafarelli, senior vice president of media investment at digital performance marketing agency Tinuiti, it’s going to take more than raising prices to maintain profits.
“The platforms best positioned for long-term success are those with robust and high-quality libraries, global reach and diversified revenue streams to help fund the expensive content costs and sports rights that draw in viewers and mitigate churn,” Cafarelli said.
“Live sports are a key driver of engagement and retention, and this development further accelerated the existing trend of audiences migrating from linear to streaming. It has fundamentally changed what the audience composition is on streaming, where the channel is strategically utilized in the media mix, and how our media deals are negotiated, executed and measured.”
PLAYING THE FIELD
Last year began with a landmark streaming-only NFL Wild Card game on Peacock, which was the tip of the spear in what would become a flood of sports-rights deals across
the board for streaming services.
Later came the NBA’s $76 billion megadeals with Amazon Prime Video, Disney’s ESPN and NBCUniversal, along with Netflix’s “NFL Christmas Gameday Live,” which garnered a broadcast network-level audience with 65 million U.S. viewers sampling a portion of the Kansas City Chiefs-Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens-Houston Texans games. Netflix subscribers in more than 200 countries tuned in.
“You see all of the [streaming] players at all the different levels trying to renegotiate sports packages and breaking up sports packages in all kinds of ways as a means of driving acquisition and also driving engagement because sports are one of the very few pieces of content that expire,” said Robbie Kellman Baxter, a subscription-based business model
consultant and host of the “Subscription Stories” podcast.
“People think, ‘I don’t know why these leagues are doing this. Why aren’t all the games in one place? It would be so much better for fans.’ But I don’t think that they care. The money is so big.” Rayburn agreed.
“If you’re a sports fan, you are going to be frustrated for the rest of your life because as long as Amazon and Google and Netflix and these other companies are willing to pony up big dollars to get this content, it is going to be extremely fragmented,” Rayburn said. “What they are doing is forgetting who the fan is and what the fan wants. So, what they’re doing is a money grab. But in doing so, they are alienating fans.”
Cafarelli predicted that leagueowned platforms, team-specific services and major streamers like

Amazon or Apple will play an increasingly large role in sports distribution. “Long-term, streaming will likely become the primary delivery mechanism for this type of offering and consolidation will occur in a similar fashion to what we’ve already seen in the TV landscape at large,” she said.
BUNDLING UP
According to Cafarelli, along with streamers becoming the primary place for live sports, bundling is a trend that’s also here to stay.
“Skinny bundles played a pivotal role in the migration of audiences from linear to streaming, particularly for households looking for more cost-efficient and flexible ways to access traditional live television,” Cafarelli said. “This is still a meaningful part of the landscape, but as the space has evolved, so too have these offerings.
“Streaming originally gave viewers the content they want on their own schedules, and it’s become important for these bundles to address two sides of the same coin, providing both live TV and on-demand viewing,” she continued. “Consumers are gravitating toward all-in-one offerings, highly reminiscent of cable packages, which drives cost back up and makes strategic partnerships between platforms incredibly important.” ●

Rapidly-growing $250 billion sector has a greatly expanded presence in Las Vegas
By George Winslow TV TECH
One of the biggest themes of this year’s NAB Show is the growing impact of the creator economy. Today, with millions of creators producing content for digital and social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok and generating billions in revenue, it is one of the largest and fastest-growing trends in digital media.
“This year, NAB is doubling down on its commitment to the creator economy,” said Gigi Raskin, head of business development, Virtual Events Group, an NAB partner. It helped build the Creator Lab, which offers sessions, hands-
on experiences and other programming in the South Hall.
“We’ve expanded Creator Lab to more than twice its original size and relocated it to a more central position on the show floor — further proof that NAB sees creators as an essential part of the industry’s future.”
One high-profile example of that expanded presence is a Main Stage session, “The Power of Positivity: Building the World’s Largest Digital Scripted Studio — Dhar Mann Studios,” on Tuesday, April 8, at 3 p.m. It will feature Dhar Mann, founder of a studio with 128 million followers and 1 billion monthly views across platforms, and its CEO Sean Atkins.
5 KEY TAKEAWAYS
A variety of panels and training sessions at NAB Show will highlight technologies, strategies and skills needed for success for creators and broadcasters.
1 New Ways to Monetize Content. Branded content and new crossplatform strategies are helping creators build close ties to major brands.
2 Thriving on Audience Fragmentation. Creators offer important insights into ways to engage niche audiences.
3 Low-Cost, HighQuality Production. New technologies on display at NAB Show make it possible for creators to produce high-quality content on shoe-string budgets.
4 Authenticity and Engagement. Successful creators are experts in building personal brands that engage audiences.
5 Cross-Platform Strategies. Creators show the importance of working across multiple platforms.
After that Main Stage session, Mann and Atkins will also take part in a Q&A in the Creator Lab.
The decision to place more emphasis on the creator economy here comes at an opportune time, said Jim Louderback, CEO and editor of “Inside the Creator Economy.” He will moderate a separate session with Mann and Atkins on Tuesday at the Creator Lab.
“The world of creators and traditional media is merging, as creators lean into TV, [and] YouTube now streams more minutes to the TV than mobile,” Louderback said. “What better place to learn about … this new media world than NAB Show?”
As with most relatively new, rapidly growing tech and creative
trends, the contours of the creator economy remain fluid. In one analysis, Goldman Sachs estimated that it involves some 50 million people around the world creating content for YouTube, TikTok and a variety of digital/social media outlets, producing some $250 billion in revenue in 2023. In another report, Coherent Market Insights valued the sector at more than $191 billion in 2024 and predicted it would hit $528 billion by 2030. The creator economy traces its origins to social media influencers producing short-form content for digital media using relatively low-cost consumer technology. But the sector now includes a large and growing number of creators and

AI in 2025: Less Hype, More Helping
Media & Entertainment players are drilling down to see how the burgeoning technology can be a problem-solver
By Phil Kurz TV TECH
Media and entertainment industry players are coming to this year’s NAB Show with a bit more experience leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence for a variety of tasks, from content creation and improving media supply chains to personalizing content and analyzing data. They’re also bringing a desire to get past some of the hype to discover how these technologies can solve problems.
“Everybody says they do AI these days, and obviously that’s not true,” said Peter Docherty, founder and chief technology officer at ThinkAnalytics, which has just
launched a unified AI-powered platform supporting contextual advertising and content monetization, curation and bundling.
“First, it’s AI; then it’s GenAI [generative AI]. There’s always a new algorithm. I call that the ‘hype cycle.’ For us, it’s really about having the right business capabilities for the business problem or opportunity you’ve got.”
That is not to say broadcasters and other M&E companies aren’t taking advantage of what AI can do. For instance, Sinclair comes to the show having completed an AI trial to generate real-time Spanish-language audio translations of newscasts at four of its local stations for distribution via
YouTube. Gray Media is attending with a newly refreshed group-wide AI policy that emphasizes innovative uses of the technology within the bounds of human oversight and control and CBS News and Stations is attending with a newly renewed and expanded contract with Veritone to leverage AI to make its vast content library more accessible and marketable.
“Over the last few years, as more content has been processed and as models have been refined, the level of search accuracy and specificity has increased,” said Sean King, general manager of media and entertainment at Veritone.
“Content creators like CBS can leverage that level of transparency
4 KEY TAKEAWAYS
1
While there is a good deal of hype around AI in the media and entertainment industry, the technology is being used for real in a range of applications from rich metadata creation and archival searches to content recommendation and language translation.
2
Broadcasters like CBS News and Stations as well as Sinclair have deployed AI to improve stories, monetize archives and offer real-time speech translation of newscasts via YouTube.
3
Generative AI is automating mundane tasks and helping the creative process at production and postproduction companies.
4
One out of five people feels comfortable with their data literacy, but Gen AI can offer a solution, making it easier for businesspeople to understand and use the data derived from their platforms.

to get into their archives — to their content, frankly, their IP (intellectual property) — offering … operational efficiency in the media supply chain and taking advantage of potential tertiary revenue opportunities,” King said.
ARCHIVAL ASSISTANCE
AI is already helping content owners extend the reach and value of their libraries and to create richer metadata to make archives searchable, said Ian McPherson, head of global M&E business development – Media Supply Chain and Generative AI at Amazon Web Services. At NAB Show he expects to see many examples of how the technology improves media workflows.
“We’ll continue to see generative AI incorporated into tools to automate mundane tasks and assist creatively, especially for companies in the production and postproduction verticals,” he said. “More companies are releasing foundational models that can have meaningful applications in media and entertainment, like Amazon Nova, and we’ll see these types of models increasingly integrated with productivity tools.”
Generative AI algorithms designed to achieve a “deep un-
derstanding” of what is happening in video frames offer content owners a path to monetize content shorts cut from footage of longer duration, said Quickplay Vice President of Product Management Naveen Narayanan.
“Shorts are becoming the No. 1 medium for people to find what they are likely to watch from a long-form point of view,” he said. “We are heavily leveraging generative AI in multiple steps … to understand the key moments in long-form content, find them to the millisecond and create short clips that have the potential to go viral and engage users.”
Attracting viewers with relevant shorts is only part of the

battle. Content owners also need to serve up the right programs and help viewers quickly determine what they’ll be watching. Here, too, AI is improving workflows for broadcast, FAST channels or simulcast playout, said Matt Smith, chief evangelist at Akta.
“Here’s where AI can help,” Smith said. “You can tell AI to schedule 24 hours of drama shows. Then an operator can remove a show that’s not [a drama] and drop another in. That just saved you 10, 15 or 20 minutes.”
Similarly, AI can automatically generate program descriptions in multiple languages and — even allowing for operator intervention to make corrections — cut the time needed to write descriptions by 80%, he said.
BETTER KNOW A SUB
AI is helping streaming distributors tackle other key issues such as subscriber lifecycle management and better understanding the ocean of data available to distributors about their subscribers, said Damien Organ, vice president of product marketing at Cleeng.
“Understanding groups of users on your platform more intelligently at a hyper personalized level is a key dimension of something that machine learning
and AI will do better than any other system, without a shadow of a doubt,” he said. “Being able to act intelligently based on understanding different groups of customers is critical.”
Only about 20% of people are confident in their data-literacy skills, Organ noted.
“GenAI is changing how people can work with data, and how they understand the data that their own platform is producing. The ability to tell stories revealed from that data with the help of GenAI is something that’s a real game-changer for the businesspeople who run these platforms,” he said.
NAB Show attendees can expect to see AI developments on several fronts, including service enhancements, such as algorithmic optimization of content delivery network (CDN) traffic, as well as viewer experience-centric enhancements providing real-time content analysis to support interactivity, according to Julien Signes, senior vice president and general manager, video network, at Synamedia.
“You have to scratch a lot of surfaces to see what’s just hype vs. what is real,” he said. “The good news is we are seeing things happening, and I think the future is bright.” l

PRODUCTION ADVANCES
How AI Is Changing the Shape of Postproduction
Technology changes are transforming workflows and bolstering cloud-based solutions
By Matthew Corrigan TVBEUROPE
Over the last 12 months, the pace of change has been relentless. Since the industry last gathered in Las Vegas for NAB Show, it seems as though an evolutionary boost has taken place. Across all aspects of production, technological advances are having a transformational effect, as the benefits of cloud migration are at last beginning to be realized.
Of course, as elsewhere, many discussions have revolved around the progression of AI, a subject that raises almost as many ques-
tions as it answers: What exactly can it do, how can it be controlled, will it affect my job?
To borrow a phrase that will resonate with fans of Ridley Scott’s classic “Blade Runner,” will AI be a benefit or a hazard? In short, what happens next?
As one of the foremost companies working in the postproduction field, Blackmagic Design is ideally positioned to gauge its impact. Simon Hall, business development manager, postproduction at Blackmagic, offered insight into how AI is making a difference.
“AI is already reshaping postproduction, particularly in areas
where it can improve efficiency and streamline workflows,” Hall said. “Features like audio transcription, Magic Mask, facial recognition, and Object Removal in DaVinci Resolve’s Neural Engine help editors and colorists work faster and more efficiently, ensuring they spend less time on repetitive processes and more on creative decisions.”
Familiar with the industry hive, Hall acknowledged some common concerns, adding: “At the same time, the industry is still figuring out the right balance between automation and craft. While AI makes some processes more accessible, there are ongoing
discussions about how and where it should be applied. Rather than replacing creative roles, the real potential of AI lies in handling time-consuming technical processes so that editors, colorists and VFX artists can focus on storytelling and craft.”
The key, he said, will be to ensure that AI continues to enhance the post-production process rather than diminishing the craft input of the creatives who drive it.
“AI will undoubtedly remain a major talking point, though the conversation is shifting toward how it can best complement creative workflows rather than replace them,” he added. “The most valuable AI-driven tools are those that automate time-consuming tasks, such as transcription, object isolation, metadata entry or media organization, so that users can focus on the creative aspects of post-production.”
So what are the other talking points likely to be overheard at this year’s NAB Show? Hall

anticipates several subjects will be echoing through the halls.
“One of the big conversations will likely be the increasing acceptance of cloud-based workflows,” he said.
“Over the past year, more productions have explored how cloud collaboration can enhance efficiency and flexibility, particularly in postproduction. While traditional workflows are still widely used, there’s a growing recognition that cloud-based solutions can help speed up collaboration, streamline media access and reduce reliance on slower, more linear processes.”
Another big talking point will be where immersive content goes next.
“High-resolution capture and spatial video are evolving fast, and there’s a lot of curiosity about how these formats can be used in actual production environments.
The challenge now is making it practical, ensuring workflows are scalable, efficient and accessible, rather than something that only works in controlled environments or niche projects.”
VP MARCHES ON
productions achieve their sustainability goals while ensuring the bottom line remains healthy.
Chris Nash, senior software engineer, leads the camera and calibration team at Disguise, a visual experience platform provider. He considered the main technological developments that are powering growth across the VP sector.
“Recent virtual production growth has been driven primarily by the combination of LED volumes and real-time content,” he said. “Unlike green screens, LED volumes immerse actors
virtual scene creation,” he said. “Traditional 3D scene production is costly and time-consuming, while 2D plates lack flexibility. Disguise’s 2.5D workflow adds depth to video plates, enabling realistic camera movement with less preproduction effort.”
Once again, AI raises its head. Nash continued: “AI also presents new possibilities, allowing studios to automate processes and develop new technological innovations. At NAB Show, Disguise is showcasing an application for digitized performer capture from video footage, using AI depth and segmentation models. This will enable a range of new previsualization and postproduction workflows, expanding creative possibilities in virtual production.”
HUMAN TOUCH
While the surge in innovation is largely welcome, technology is only ever as good as those whose imagination makes it possible,
artists who can create real-time virtual scenes, requiring investment in training. Experts in virtual production are also required to plan shoots carefully and ensure scenes are captured correctly. Color management is particularly crucial, as productions must account for content, screen and camera specifications to ensure captures are suitable for modern displays with high dynamic range.”
There is, as ever, much to discuss at this year’s NAB Show. l
Why This Matters
Now more than ever, keeping a finger on the pulse of change is vital. Not that long ago, the subject of IP migration was esoteric. Few understood the potential it offered. Some thought its promise would never be delivered, forever remaining just over the horizon.
Yet here we are.
IP has arrived and is transforming production as we know it, rewriting the rules at a rate that can scarcely be believed. For an industry that can sometimes be slow to react to change, IP was a wakeup call that nobody wanted to miss.
Virtual production is another area that is undergoing a rapid process of change.
Studios are meeting the growing need for ever-faster turnaround times, with budgetary constraints ever-present. Additionally, development is being driven through convergence with other industries, notably gaming. Advances in VP also help to reduce environmental impacts, helping
and directors within virtual environments during filming, reducing postproduction work and improving captured lighting and reflections. Real-time engines enable this by using camera tracking to adjust perspectives dynamically, while virtual elements can be modified instantly for creative flexibility.”
Looking forward, Nash sees further potential as VP continues its growth journey.
“There are opportunities in virtual production to streamline
the humans. It’s essential to bridge the skills gap quickly to ensure that creators, operators and innovators are able to work with the latest developments. Nash concluded by looking at how VP can ensure skills are developed and maintained.
“Embracing virtual production requires a change in mindset from studios, as visual effects must be considered early in the process so they can be filmed in-camera,” he said.
“The industry needs skilled
And now there’s a new kid on the block — AI. No longer a mysterious concept for academics, AI is not just coming, it’s already here. It’s changing the way we live and work right now. In production, we’ve just scratched the surface. New and innovative ways to harness its power are being found as fast as they can be imagined. The industry is standing at the top of the slope and the ride is about to begin. In this article, we’re talking to those who are already on their way.
For the field of production, what they have to share is defining the future.

WHY THIS MATTERS
Traditional hardware used in broadcast functions including audio processing and RDS encoding are being run as software applications on virtual machines, on-premises or in a cloud computing environment. Among the bene ts:
• IP-based work ows allow more options for device placement to modernize operations.
• Working across multiple encoding systems eliminates separate units for each program stream.
• Streamlining air chains reduces points of potential failure.
• Con guration is simpli ed, requiring only a network connection between systems.
powerful AI technologies,” said Brandon Cassidy, chief technology officer at Super Hi-Fi.
“There are lots of ramifications of this new model … how it affects a broadcast group in terms of how they structure themselves, how they operate, how their talent works and how they can improve the quality of their stations for listeners and advertisers.”
VIRTUALIZING EAS
There is a movement to virtualize the tools broadcasters use to support the Emergency Alert System. The National Association of Broadcasters itself would like the FCC to allow EAS participants to use software-based encoder/ decoder technology in place of a hardware box; it says such a move would improve cybersecurity and make EAS more robust.
But how to do it is complicated. EAS involves a complex matrix of regulatory, security and operational considerations.
The NAB session “Broadcasting Without Boundaries: Seamlessly Integrating EAS Into Virtualized Air Chains,” takes place today (Sunday) in W220-W221 of West Hall.
Bill Robertson, vice president at Digital Alert Systems, will discuss an architectural approach supporting virtualization that involves distributing tasks between advanced EAS edge devices, virtualized applications and centralized cloud servers.
The technology supplier has teamed with Telos Alliance and Nautel to present the solution, called EAS at the Edge. They contemplate a software-defined mechanism located at the edge of a broadcast’s operation; it would continue to operate even if internet or cloud connectivity is interrupted. Radio World has reported that the companies have met with FCC officials about the proposal, which they say addresses the AoIP and virtualization challenges while working within the FCC’s current regulatory framework.
“Television air chains have rapidly evolved to accommodate IP interfaces, and modern radio technology has finally caught up,” Robertson said. “Digital Alert Systems has pioneered this type of integration in the cable and television industries and our DASDEC supports this evolution in the radio industry with enhanced AoIP for hybrid-virtualized or fully virtualized air chains.”
Its proponents say the EAS at the Edge approach simplifies issues for broadcasters, in terms of cost, complexity and compliance.
“It essentially reduces the radio station footprint to two devices,” according to Digital Alert Systems.
In NAB’s own meetings with FCC officials, the association has said it appreciated the DAS proposal but differed with it in some important respects. Yet NAB also said it remains “agnostic” regarding the development of such software and prefers that trusted vendors of EAS equipment take the lead in developing such a product. ●

TIGHTROPE MEDIA SYSTEMS MEDIASCRIBE CAPTIONING
W2615 | Tightrope Media Systems is demonstrating its new MediaScribe media accessibility and transcription service at NAB Show 2025. Designed to make government meetings more accessible, MediaScribe offers real-time text transcriptions and translations that can be displayed on dedicated on-premise displays, personal mobile devices, and cable channels. Currently powering in-room displays for large city and county operations across the country, MediaScribe will be available for pre-order at the show.
MediaScribe is a hybrid service that combines a hardware interface and cloud-powered AI services to provide a flexible, user-friendly workflow. Live meeting footage is ingested into the on-prem, 2 RU gateway appliance via SDI. Then, via Gigabit Ethernet, Cablecast’s cloud-based captioning engine uses automatic speech recognition (ASR) to cost-effectively convert speech into text.
With three SDI outputs, MediaScribe can be configured to deliver three types of displays, presentations, or outputs. Closed captions can be inserted into live broadcasts by downstream systems.

With its intuitive control interface, the eMotion LV1 Classic offers the reliability and speed essential for high-stakes live broadcasts.
STREAMGUYS AI SERVICE
W1743 | New for NAB Show 2025, StreamGuys’ first AI service removes the tedious responsibility of when, where and how to tag transition points in podcasts and on-demand audio streams where ads would appear. StreamGuys’ application of AI for ad marker tagging is an extension of the company’s workflow conversion tools for metadata related to ad insertions.
The addition of AI eliminates the monotony of manually inserting markers at the precise second where each ad break should be triggered. The AI application is trained to recognize the natural point of transition between the end of the segment and an ad break. The application is especially valuable for StreamGuys customers that use its SGrecast service to convert live broadcasts into podcasts with the intention of monetizing that content, allowing production staff to focus on what’s important: creating content that is both compelling and monetizable. StreamGuys is exhibiting at the ENCO booth in the West Hall.

Yet it’s allowed almost eight years to go by since many companies held out the promise of Advanced Emergency Alerting to secure FCC approval of ATSC 3.0. Disaster after disaster proves the need for a geo-targeted alert system that provides a lifeline when cellular and the electric grid go down. But very few companies have even tried to use the technology that is uniquely theirs to ll that enormous need: NextGen Broadcasting.”
