Desk report:

Funeral director admits preventing 30 burials and theft

A funeral director who gave grieving families the wrong ashes while their loved ones' bodies were left in his parlour for months has pleaded guilty to 30 counts of preventing a lawful and decent burial.

Officers found 35 bodies and more than 100 sets of ashes when they raided Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, in Hull, in March 2024. One of the bodies had been there for a year.

Bush also pleaded guilty at Hull Crown Court earlier to one count of theft from 12 charities, including the Salvation Army and Macmillan Cancer Support. He previously admitted presenting families with the ashes of strangers and fraudulently selling funeral plans. He will be sentenced on 27 July.

Bush, 48, who arrived at the court carrying a large black holdall, stood in the glassfronted dock as the clerk spent 10 minutes reading out 31 charges.

Wearing a dark grey threepiece suit with a white shirt and mauve tie, he clasped his hands in front of him as he said "guilty" to each count in a quiet voice. About a dozen members of the victims' families remained composed in the

public gallery throughout the 24-minute hearing. Judge Mr Justice Hilliard told Bush a "custodial sentence is inevitable in this case" before releasing him on bail. Bush was charged after a major investigation into human remains found at

the premises, including four babies lost in pregnancy. Humberside Police said all the charges dated from a period between May 2012 and 6 March 2024.

Prosecutor Chris Paxton KC told the court there would be up to 240 victim impact

UK says Iran holding world economy 'hostage' with Hormuz attacks

statements from people who had been affected by the case. These would be provided before the sentencing hearing.

"The fraudulent trading relates to funeral plans involving over 150 individuals," he said. Leaving court, Bush made no comment as he walked briskly away carrying the holdall.

Some of the victims' families pursued him along Chapel Lane, shouting "you're a pig" and "you're a monster, Bush". Michaela Baldwin's stepfather, Danny Middleton, was in his 70s when he died in November 2023.

The family was told his body was one of the 35 found at Legacy's premises. They were given ashes by Bush who claimed they were those of their loved one.

Karen Dry, who trusted Bush with her parents' funerals in 2016 and 2018, organised monthly vigils for the victims since the investigation began.

Desk report:

Iran has been able to "hijack an international shipping route to hold the global economy hostage", UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper told a summit convened to address attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.

Representatives from more than 40 countries attended the virtual talks on Thursday, which were billed as the beginning of efforts to assemble a coalition capable of ensuring security in the Gulf shipping channel. Iran has attacked several vessels in the Strait in response to the war waged against it by the US and Israel, disrupting energy exports and sending global fuel prices soaring.

The summit would focus on diplomatic measures as opposed to military options, Cooper said at the beginning of the talks.

The foreign secretary said:

"We have seen Iran hijack an international shipping route to hold the global economy hostage.

"This is hitting the trading routes for Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Saudi, Oman, Iraq, but that means

liquid natural gas for Asia, fertiliser for Africa, and jet fuel for the world.

"That Iranian recklessness towards countries who were never involved in this conflict, which we and 130 countries across the world have strongly condemned at the United Nations, is not just hitting mortgage rates and petrol prices and the cost of living here in the UK and in many different countries across the world, it is hitting our global economic

security."

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said it was for other nations to "build up some delayed courage" and reopen the route.

Trump said allies "should have done it" earlier, adding: "Go to the Strait and just take it. Protect it. Use it for yourselves." Washington has repeatedly accused allies of not doing enough to secure the shipping route or to support

its war effort, leaving the UK and other nations weighing how to contribute to securing the strait without becoming involved in the wider war.

French President Emmanuel Macron said it was "unrealistic" to reopen the Strait using military force, saying: "It is never the option we have chosen."

Speaking during a visit to South Korea, he said: "This can only be done in concert with Iran. So, first and foremost, there must be a

ceasefire and a resumption of negotiations." Downing Street has not released a full list of attendees at Thursday's talks but the US was not expected to send a representative.

Countries which signed a joint statement in midMarch calling on Iranian forces to halt attacks against commercial ships were expected to take part, including some Gulf nations, as well as France, Germany, Japan, Australia and others.

The statement says: "We express our readiness to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait. "We welcome the commitment of nations who are engaging in preparatory planning."

The talks come a day after Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the UK was "exploring each and every diplomatic avenue that is available" to reopen the route.

He also said British military planners would consider what could be done in the future to "make the Strait accessible and safe after the fighting has stopped".

Desk report:

The government has withdrawn an offer of creating 1,000 more doctor training posts in England after the British Medical Association (BMA) refused to call off a six-day strike next week.

The extra posts were part of a wider package of measures put forward by ministers earlier this year to resolve the long-running dispute with resident doctors, previously known as junior doctors.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer set a 48-hour deadline on Monday evening for the walkout to be cancelled if the union wanted to keep them.

The strike was called last week when talks between the two sides over pay and job shortages broke down.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said doctors had been offered a "generous deal", but said it was now not possible to give the go-ahead on the training posts.

"These posts would have gone live this month, but as systems now need to prepare for strikes and more uncertainty, it simply

Doctors lose new jobs package as strike to go ahead

won't be operationally or financially possible to launch these posts in time to recruit for this year."

The government said the move would not impact the overall number of doctors in the NHS as the posts were going to be created from existing short-term posts.

Resident doctors fill these when they cannot get official training posts.

Dr Jack Fletcher, BMA resident doctor

committee chair, said the announcement was "extremely disappointing".

"It is genuinely disheartening to be at this point after what had been constructive talks up until a few weeks ago when the government moved the goalposts.

"It is simply wrong that the development of the doctors of the future is being used as a pawn like this.

"We have consistently maintained that we are

willing to postpone industrial action should a genuinely credible offer be provided."

Alongside the extra training posts, the government had offered to cover some out-of-pocket expenses such as exam fees as well as ensuring faster pay progression through the five salary bands that span training.

But the BMA ended the talks saying the deal - and in particular its pay progression

element - had been watereddown at the last minute. It also coincided with the government accepting the recommendations of the independent pay review body that all doctors, including resident doctors, should get a 3.5% pay rise from this month.

The BMA called it a "crushing blow", pointing out that inflation was set to rise because of the Iran war. While the pay rise means resident doctor pay has risen by a third over the past four years, the BMA argues it is still a fifth lower than it was in 2008 once inflation is taken into account.

The union uses a measure of inflation - RPI - that is higher than others. It says it does this because the government uses that measure of inflation when adding interest to student loans.

The training posts that were offered are the ones doctors move into after the first two years of training. This is the point at which they specialise in areas such as general practice or surgery.

London Pride boss sacked after allegedly spending donations on perfume

Desk report:

The boss of Pride in London, one of the world's largest pride events, has been sacked after he was accused of making personal purchases with thousands of pounds worth of vouchers intended for volunteers.

Christopher Joell-Deshields, who denies the allegations, was suspended as chief executive last September when allegations about his conduct came to light.

BBC News understands he has been paid his full £87,500 annual salary while suspended for seven months until his departure in March.

It comes as the 55-year-old is in an ongoing legal dispute with Pride in London after he was accused of trying to frustrate the investigation into his conduct.

Joell-Deshields has been approached for comment.

A group of volunteer directors for London LGBT Community Pride, the community interest company which runs parts of the annual pride event in

the capital, accused JoellDeshields of spending £7,000 of vouchers donated by a sponsor.

The vouchers were reportedly intended as raffle prizes and gifts to volunteers, but Joell-Deshields spent them on luxury perfumes and Apple products, the directors said.

In a whistleblowing

disclosure, the volunteer directors also claimed there was a "bullying culture" at Pride in London.

Following an independent investigation into these claims, Pride in London said on Tuesday it had decided to sack Joell-Deshields. He had been chief executive since 2021. He appealed the decision

but it was upheld by an independent council, the organisation added. Pride in London, which has around 100 year-round volunteers and two paid members of staff, said its interim chief executive, Rebecca Paisis, would be "implementing a new governance structure to ensure Pride in London

operates at the highest standards".

This year's celebration is due to take place on 4 July, with sources at the organisation telling BBC News it will go ahead "as usual".

The event costs around £1.3m a year to run and relies on around 1,000 onthe-day volunteers. It's largely funded by corporate sponsors but receives around £175,000 a year from the Mayor of London's office, the Greater London Authority (GLA). Leaders of London's pride event will be hoping news of JoellDeshield's dismissal could help steady what has been a rocky few months for them. The investigation into him also led to a legal battle in the High Court, which is due to conclude in the coming weeks.

In September 2025, a High Court judge ordered Joell-Deshield to relinquish control of Pride in London property, including bank accounts, internal systems and equipment.

Macron hits out at Trump for Brigitte insult

Desk report: Emmanuel Macron has criticised Donald Trump after the US president mocked him for being shoved by his wife.

In a speech in which he attacked Nato allies for not joining the Iran war, Mr Trump said Brigitte Macron had treated the French president “extremely badly” and that Mr Macron was “still recovering from the right to the jaw”.

Mr Macron said Mr Trump’s reference to a 2025 video that showed Mrs Macron shoving her husband in the face, was “not elegant, nor up to standard”. He said the White House’s call for allies to take military action in the Strait of Hormuz, which has been closed by Iran, were “unrealistic”, adding: “It is not our operation.”

The US and Israel started the war on Feb 28 without consulting allies, he said, adding: “They then complain that they are not being helped in an operation they decided on alone.”

He said Mr Trump could not keep “contradicting” himself every day on Iran.

In a prime-time speech on

Wednesday night, Mr Trump told the American people that the “hard part is done” and said he was “very close” to ending the war.

He urged allies to “take the lead” in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, telling them to “build up some delayed courage”.

Yvette Cooper, the Foreign Secretary, stressed the “urgent need” to reopen the strait on Thursday, as

she convened a meeting of some 40 countries on the vital shipping route. She said Iran’s “recklessness” in blockading the waterway was “hitting our global economic security”.

On Wednesday, the US president told The Telegraph that Nato was a “paper tiger”. He said he was reconsidering American membership of the military alliance after allies rejected his demand that warships be sent to reopen the waterway, which serves

Weight-loss jabs will be

as a conduit for about a fifth of the world’s oil.

Mr Macron said those comments risked undermining Nato, which has guaranteed European security since 1949. During the speech, Mr Trump claimed he had asked Mr Macron to send French warships to the Gulf, saying he had urged France to deploy vessels “immediately” but that the president had refused, offering instead to

help “once the war is won”. Mr Trump said: “No, no, I don’t need them when the war is over, Emmanuel.”

Before he described calling Mr Macron, Mr Trump mentioned Mrs Macron and the shoving incident last year, which went viral on social media at the time.

Mr Macron told reporters in South Korea during a state visit to Seoul: “I am not going to respond to them [the comments] – they do not deserve a response. What we must do is work towards de-escalation, a ceasefire, and the resumption of negotiations.

“We are talking about matters of grave importance – we are talking about war, about the men and women fighting on the front line, about the men, women and civilians who are being killed.” Mr Macron said the war would not resolve the issue of Tehran’s nuclear programme, and that only “in-depth negotiations” could.

“Targeted military action, even for a few weeks, will not allow us to resolve the nuclear issue in the long term.

offered on NHS for people at risk of further heart attacks

Desk report:

Weight-loss jab Wegovy will be offered for free on the NHS to more than a million people in England at risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The watchdog NICE, external says people with these health issues, or serious circulation problems in their legs, and who are overweight, should have the weekly jab "as an extra layer of protection".

A GP or specialist will check if it is the right option for those already taking other heart medicines, such as statins, and alongside a healthy diet.

Drug trials suggest Wegovy can help slash the risk of future heart and circulation problems.

Cutting heart risk

In tests on tens of thousands of people, external, the jabs - alongside existing heart medicines - were linked to a 20% reduced risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Importantly, benefits were seen early in the clinical trial, before significant weight loss occurred, suggesting the drug works directly on the heart and blood vessels, not just through weight loss, says NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).

Each year in the UK, there are around 100,000 hospital admissions due to heart

attacks, another 100,000 people experience a stroke and around 350,000 people live with peripheral arterial disease.

People who have already had one of these health issues are at higher risk of experiencing more problems and stand to benefit from medicines that can cut that risk.

Disease might be prevented in around seven in 10 cases, experts estimate, based on best evidence.

Helen Knight, from NICE, said: "We know that people who have already had a

heart attack or stroke are living with real fear that it could happen again.

"The evidence from the clinical trial is compelling. It showed that people taking semaglutide alongside their existing heart medicines were significantly less likely to have another heart attack or stroke.

"Today's decision gives thousands of people in that situation an extra layer of protection, on top of the medicines they are already taking."

Patients prescribed Wegovy will be able to self-administer

the drug at home using a special pen injector device. It is recommended for those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) classed as overweight or obese - higher or equal to 27.

Rollout should begin this summer. The drug, also known as semaglutide, works as an appetite suppressant by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1 that makes people feel fuller, which can help them lose weight. It also slows down how quickly food is digested. Some people may

experience bloating, nausea or discomfort as a side effect.Doctors should also prescribe lifestyle changes that include eating healthily and getting enough exercise to help people keep the weight off.

Currently, treatment with Wegovy is limited to two years on the NHS through specialist services and its long-term risks are still being studied. Many say the treatment should be considered life-long, given the risk of relapse.

NICE says the NHS has reached an agreement with the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk that makes the treatment, ensuring it will be costeffective.

Dr Sonya Babu-Narayan from the British Heart Foundation said she hoped the injections could be made available to everyone who could benefit "as soon as possible".

Prof Robert Storey, an expert in heart health at the University of Sheffield, warned GLP-1 drugs could reduce muscle mass as well as fat.

"Physical activity, such as resistance training, is important to counteract potential negative effects on muscle strength," he added.

Desk report:

Becoming a parent is one of life’s greatest joys but it can also bring plenty of questions.

From pregnancy to preparing your child for school, every stage of early parenthood can come with new decisions and uncertainties: I’m pregnant, what should I do first? Am I feeding my baby the right foods? Can I get financial support with childcare? How can I help prepare my child for school?

In many families in our community, parenting is very much a shared experience. Advice often comes from parents, grandparents, aunties and friends. While this support is invaluable, it can sometimes leave parents feeling overwhelmed when different people offer different guidance.

The truth is, many parents are navigating these questions every day.

That’s why the Best Start in Life website brings together information and advice from NHS and government in one place – helping families find reliable information about pregnancy, feeding, childcare and preparing their child for school.

Starting your pregnancy journey

If you’ve just found out you’re pregnant, the first step is to book your first midwife appointment. This is known as the booking appointment and should happen before you’re 10 weeks pregnant, where possible. To do this, you just need to selfrefer online to your local maternity service. They will then contact you to arrange your first appointment and kickstart your pregnancy care. If you are already more than 10 weeks pregnant and have not yet booked this appointment, it’s not too late. You can still self-refer, and your local maternity service will support you with catching up on the care you are entitled to.

Looking after yourself in pregnancy can help give your baby the best start,

When you’re a parent, every question is a good one

but it can be confusing if you get different advice from different people. Some women don’t know what to expect at their appointments and this can make them feel worried, too.

The Best Start in Life website offers week-by-week guidance on how to have a healthy pregnancy, including diet, exercise and what to expect at appointments. You can also sign up for free weekly emails for tailored advice throughout your pregnancy and up to your child’s 4th year. Plus, the emails are also available in different languages.

Benash Nazmeen, UK midwife and Assistant Professor of Midwifery explains:

“The information on the Best Start in Life website can help women prepare for appointments, know what to expect and feel more confident raising questions. The NHS is there to support you every step of the way. Because giving your baby the best start in life means feeling informed, confident, and able to make decisions that are right for you and your baby.”

Weaning your baby

Introducing babies to solid foods as they grow can feel like a huge step and it’s perfectly normal for parents to have lots of questions

about how and when to start weaning and what foods are suitable. The NHS recommends waiting until your baby is around 6 months old before you start introducing them to solid food, alongside their usual breastmilk or formula. Weaning is all about introducing your baby to a varied diet and getting them used to different textures and tastes – so it’s perfectly OK if it takes several tries.

Many family meals can be adapted for babies by mashing or softening them- just make sure there is no added salt or sugar. However, there are a few foods babies should avoid, such as honey before the age of one.

For guidance on what foods to start with, what foods to avoid and weaning recipe inspiration, visit the Best Start in Life weaning Hub.

Benash Nazmeen, UK midwife and Assistant Professor of Midwifery:

“Weaning is about helping babies get used to a range of foods, textures and tastes from around 6 months. Families can use the flavours they already cook with, adapting meals so they are softer and milder to start with, and gradually increasing flavour as babies become more used to them. Just make sure there is no added salt or sugar in their

meals.”

Early years education and childcare

Formal childcare can help children to build confidence, communication skills and friendships. It also offers parents greater flexibility to work or make time for other important activities. Depending on their child’s age, parents may be eligible for up to 30 hours of government funded childcare each week for 38 weeks of the year. This can save a family an average of £8000 in childcare costs. To find out what you may be entitled to and how to apply, visit Best Start in Life.

An early year’s childhood education expert said:

Rachna Joshi, Early childhood teacher:

“It’s really great to see the impact of the funded childcare available to families. I have seen children develop their language, social, emotional and play skills which are vital to learning. Nurseries, and childminders have inclusion at the heart of their practice, this means they are carefully thinking about how they respect and celebrate a wide range of cultures and religions, to help you and your child have a sense of belonging to the setting.”

There are so many things that you can do that help

your child to learn. Many schools recognise the role that the family plays in being the child’s first teacher. The Best Start in Life Hub is the place to go for information about the simple everyday activities that you can do at home that will help.

Rachna Joshi, Early childhood teacher:

“Starting school is an exciting point in a child’s life. Families can help by playing with their child, speaking to children about what they like and sharing songs and stories together. All these activities help children’s language and communication skills. Songs and stories are a great way to develop early literacy skills but it also develops your bond with your child too. There are so many everyday activities that you already do that can link to what they will be doing when they start school, such as sitting together during mealtimes, becoming independent when using the toilet, putting their coat and shoes on to go outside”

Advice, all in one place Parenting comes with plenty of questions and that’s completely normal.

Bangladesh the first casualty as energy crisis spreads globally

Desk report: Bangladesh could become the first foreign casualty of Donald Trump’s war in Iran as it faces running out of oil and gas within weeks.

After weeks of rationing, the government in Dhaka is struggling to formulate a plan and is becoming increasingly desperate at the prospect of running out of fuel, sources have told The Telegraph.

However, the south Asian nation is not the only country facing an escalating energy crisis.

As a result of Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, India’s industrial output has slowed. At the same time, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand are rationing dwindling fuel supplies, while South Korea is considering limits on public consumption.

In some cases, it has forced countries to open talks with China for fuel imports, with Beijing leveraging the crisis. Forecasts suggest that shortages could start biting in Britain in as little as two weeks should Mr Trump’s military operation in Iran continue.

But Bangladesh, a country of 170 million people, is expected to become the first to run dry. Around 80 per cent of crude oil and oil products shipped through the Strait of Hormuz are exported to Asia, as is nearly 90 per cent of liquefied natural gas (LNG). It imports 95 per cent of its oil and gas needs, with two-thirds of that coming from Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq. This month the country has imported about 170,000 tonnes of crude oil and diesel. This is down from 332,000 tonnes in the same month last year, as crude imports dried up almost completely.

“The government there is getting increasingly desperate, not sure what to do and how to plan,” a Western source briefed on the country’s woes said.

In late March Bangladesh had 80,000 tonnes of crude oil stored at its Eastern Refinery, enough to keep the country going for about 17 days. Its stocks of diesel and petrol are equally tight. Bangladesh is struggling to secure more crude and its authorities are frantically scouring the world for new sources of refined products such as diesel and fuel oil. Officials have asked the

US for approval to import 600,000 tonnes of Russian fuel oil, and they have also received 60,000 tonnes from Indonesia. The price is likely to be much higher than Bangladesh was paying before the war.

India was contracted to deliver 60,000 tonnes of diesel to Bangladesh in the first half of this year. But India has its own supply worries, and Dhaka has had to fight to get this pledge honoured. In Dhaka, its capital, motorists have been queueing for hours at petrol stations, universities have been shut and civil servants have been told to limit their electricity consumption during daylight hours.

“I’ve been in this queue for four hours and still don’t know if I’ll get fuel,” Abul Kalam, a cab driver told The Telegraph. “If I go home empty, my family doesn’t eat tonight. It’s that simple.”

Commuters abandoned journeys, delivery workers sat idle beside their vehicles and public transport thinned across parts of the capital.

The shortages have brought daily life close to a standstill in one of the world’s most congested cities. An oil industry source said reports had shown that Bangladesh could have just “10-21 days of key fuel stocks” remaining. Despite the worrying figures, they cautioned that new shipments were expected to arrive in the country, meaning depletion was not inevitable.

Industry insiders and transport workers alleged that informal syndicates were exacerbating the crisis by diverting supplies and holding back fuel from the market.

“There is already a severe strain on fuel availability,” a senior official said. “If the Iran war drags on and fuel supplies remain disrupted, Bangladesh could effectively grind to a halt within weeks.”

The government insists there is no shortage. Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, the energy minister told the country’s parliament on Monday that supplies remained stable.

“Let me state clearly, there is no fuel shortage in Bangladesh at this moment.

In fact, we have increased supply compared to last year,” he said.

The minister blamed a surge in consumption.

Motorcyclists, he said, were buying three-to-four times their usual daily amounts, while sales at some filling stations had nearly doubled.

The government has launched a nationwide crackdown on illegal storage and is offering rewards for

After the last page

information on hoarding. In India, gas shortages have prompted manufacturing to slump to its lowest levels in four and a half years.

Its ministry of petroleum and natural gas has been forced to counteract claims that the country’s oil reserves could run out within the week.

Officials said New Delhi maintained a readily available 60-day supply to quell panic buying prompted by the rumours.

In South Korea, the government is considering imposing driving restrictions on the public for the first time since the Gulf War in 1991. The country imports roughly 70 per cent of its fuel needs from the Middle East.

Companies are being encouraged to persuade their employees to cut back on car use to ease pressure on supplies.

Separately, Seoul has been forced to warn the public not to hoard plastic bin bags because there is no risk of a shortage, as feared.

Kim Sung-wha, the energy minister, said that more than half of local authorities had supplies to last more than six months, and Korea would allow the use of regular bags for waste in the “worst-case situation”.

The Philippines and Vietnam are also exposed, importing more than 80 per cent of their crude oil from the Gulf. Vietnam gets most of its supply from Kuwait. Its imports of crude oil roughly halved in March from the previous month and it has not been able to replace this supply with shipments from elsewhere.

The country’s strategic reserve would last the Vietnamese economy about three weeks. The nearest source of diesel is China. But Beijing earlier this month imposed a ban on petroleum exports.

Still, Bloomberg reports that a Chinese tanker delivered 100,000 tonnes of distillate fuels to Vietnam over the weekend.

Johannes Rauball, from analysis firm Kpler, said Beijing had seen an opportunity to boost its influence with sometimes fractious neighbours such as Vietnam and the Philippines. He said: “China is exporting diesel and clean petroleum products to countries like the Philippines and Vietnam through bilateral government arrangements, strengthening Beijing’s leverage over neighbours with whom it already has ongoing territorial disputes.”

The Philippines became the first country to announce a

national energy emergency last Tuesday. The country, which is almost entirely reliant on the Gulf for crude oil, has more than a month of fuel left (40 days), forcing its government to start talks with Beijing.

It has received two Chinese tankers carrying 260,000 tonnes of diesel and has about six weeks of the fuel remaining. Like Bangladesh, it is seeking Russian cargo. But an initial 700,000-barrel diesel shipment from Russia would only buy a few days’ grace.

Japan began its largest ever release of emergency reserves last week (80 million barrels of of oil, which will last approximately 45 days).

In Myanmar, soldiers are cruising the streets with loudspeakers telling people to stay home and avoid panic buying. Many people have been forced to wait for hours in line at petrol stations only for them to sell out. The junta has implemented an “odd-even” rationing system, where odd-numbered plates can buy fuel on one day and even numbers the next.

In Cambodia, a third of the petrol pumps have been shut down.

Meanwhile, Iran appears to be profiting from the rising energy prices, with the price of oil as high as $116 a barrel.

An anonymous source, cited by the Economist, said the Islamic Republic was exporting up to 2.8 million barrels and other petroleum products a day, which was the same, if not more, than it did before the war.

Many of its exports end up in China, which either exchanges them for goods Tehran needs to import or simply deposits money into a shadowy network of sanction-busting bank accounts. Much of this money, an estimated $6bn$7bn, has been removed from known accounts and sheltered elsewhere to protect it from the war. These new accounts are often found in East Asia, Britain, Germany, Georgia, Italy and Romania, according to the Economist.

Special JS body recommends laps of referendum ordinance

Desk report:

A special committee formed to review the 133 ordinances issued during the interim government's tenure has not approved around 20

ordinances, including the Anti-Corruption Commission Ordinance, the National Human Rights Commission Ordinance, the Police Commission Ordinance, the Prevention and Remedies of Disappearances, and the Referendum Ordinance.

Of these, four ordinances, including the Supreme Court Judge Appointment Ordinance and the Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance, have been recommended to be allowed to lapse. For the remaining 16 ordinances, it has been recommended to submit new bills in parliament that lawmakers can examine and further legislate.

Committee chairman Zainul Abedin placed the report on all 133 ordinances in the Parliament on Thursday.

The 133 ordinances issued during the interim government's tenure were presented in the first meeting of the 13th Sangshad (March 12) as per the rules. Later, the parliament formed a special committee comprising members of the government and opposition parties to examine them and submit a report. The committee submitted its report on Thursday. Out of the 133 ordinances issued during the interim government, the special committee has recommended that 98 ordinances be passed in their entirety and 15 ordinances be introduced in the parliament through the relevant ministry in amended form.

Out of the remaining 20 ordinances, 16 ordinances should not be introduced in the parliament as bills now, but should be further strengthened and revised later. It has been recommended that a bill be introduced in the parliament now for the repeal and preservation of 4 ordinances.

That is, 20 ordinances issued during the interim government are not being approved by the parliament. As a result, their effectiveness will lapse after the specified period. The constitution states that if an ordinance is not approved within 30 days of its introduction in the parliament, its effectiveness will lapse.

Of these, three members of the opposition party Jamaate-Islami have given notes of dissent to the special committee regarding a total of 20 ordinances.
