Principal’s editorial Welcome to the first edition of The Star for 2026.

This edition celebrates a significant milestone for MLC: the opening of Phase 1 of the largest capital investment in the College’s history, the Physical Education and Sport Precinct. It has been a pleasure to welcome the MLC community into these new spaces and witness the excitement of students, the pride of donors, and the enthusiasm of parents, staff and alumnae as they explored the facilities. Read more on pages 4–5.

While we celebrate this new chapter, we also honour an important part of our history. The Physical Education Centre (PEC), a much-loved building that served generations of MLC students over almost 40 years, concluded its service at the end of Term 2 before demolition commenced during the school holidays. Its legacy is celebrated on pages 6–7, while its replacement, the Indoor Sports Centre, will complete Phase 2 of the Precinct development.

Together, these stories reflect something that has long defined MLC: a willingness to continually evolve in response to the changing needs of girls while remaining true to our purpose. Our commitment to preparing students for a changing world extends beyond new facilities. It is equally reflected in how we strengthen our programs, enrich learning and create opportunities for every student.

Throughout this edition, you will see that commitment in action. Explore the development of the Year 11 VCE Core (pages 12–13), the Year 8 Digital Technology program fostering global citizenship (page 14), and the Reggio Emiliainspired glow room encouraging imagination and creativity in Kindle (page 11). You will also read about the many ways our community comes together to support and inspire one another, from Girls supporting girls (page 10) to our Celebration Morning and Evening events (pages 16–17), and the many moments captured in Around MLC (pages 8–9).

These stories also reflect the priorities guiding our work today: strengthening connections across our community, fostering growth, championing women and inclusion, and continuing to evolve so future generations of students can flourish.

As you read this edition, I hope you enjoy celebrating the many achievements, milestones and moments of connection that continue to shape our College community.

Principal Shea delighted in welcoming visitors to the new MLC Aquatic Centre on Discovery Day on Sunday, 21 June.

Ms Shea was an enthusiastic bi-partisan supporter of all Houses at the Years 7-12 House Athletics Carnival at Lakeside Stadium on Tuesday, 12 May.

Principal Shea welcomed delegates from across Australia, New Zealand and Asia to the MLC-hosted 2026 International Coalition of Girls Schools Symposium, on Monday, 20 April.

MLC turned 144 in 2026. Current MLC Founders’ Day tradition sees the Principal and other school leaders welcome all students coming through the Krome Gates before the start of the school day.

A milestone for MLC Celebrating the opening of Phase 1 of the Physical Education and Sport Precinct The opening of Phase 1 of the Physical Education and Sport Precinct marked a significant milestone for MLC. The Aquatic Centre and enhanced Junior School playground are the first completed elements of a long-term investment in facilities designed to support the wellbeing, learning and lifelong participation in physical activity of generations of students.

Speaking at the official opening, Principal Julia Shea reflected on the purpose behind the Precinct: “At MLC we know that physical activity plays an important role in confidence, wellbeing and learning. This Precinct has been designed to create more opportunities for every student to participate in ways that feel right for them.”

The new Aquatic Centre significantly expands what MLC can offer, allowing more students to learn, train and enjoy being active together in purpose-designed aquatic facilities.

Over several days, the MLC community came together to celebrate this significant milestone. The official opening brought together donors, project partners, staff and student leaders, with student reflections, a blessing and the unveiling of the donor recognition board recognising both the future of the Precinct and the generosity of those who helped bring it to life. Staff were then welcomed to explore the new facilities during a dedicated preview before Discovery Day saw more than 1,200 members of the MLC community tour the new spaces, with the day commencing with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Pallyan Hunter, son of Wurundjeri Elder Murrundindi. During the school holidays, alumnae also returned to campus for dedicated tours of the new facilities.

Designed with Students Also speaking at the official opening, 2026 Senior Prefect Zara Keogh acknowledged MLC’s longstanding commitment to girls’ sport, saying, “as young women in sport, it means a great deal to recognise the ongoing investment MLC has made in providing exceptional sporting opportunities. Their commitment to supporting girls and championing women in sport is reflected in this remarkable new aquatic centre.”

Students also played an important role in shaping many aspects of the new facilities, from the Aquatic Centre change rooms to elements of the enhanced Junior School playground. Zara described the significance of their involvement, “as students, we are immensely proud of this space and what it will offer to everyone who uses it. It is especially meaningful to know that student perspectives have helped shape its design and purpose.”

Supporting Every Student The Physical Education and Sport Precinct has been designed to create more opportunities for every student to participate in sport and physical activity, discover activities they enjoy and develop healthy habits that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Phase 1 includes the Aquatic Centre, featuring a 50m swimming pool, dedicated diving pool and the Shirley Hsieh Learn to Swim pool. Together, these facilities support every stage of a student’s aquatic journey, from developing water confidence through to training, diving and lifelong participation in aquatic activity.

Looking ahead to Phase 2 While we celebrate what has been achieved, work is already underway on the next stage of the project. Phase 2 will complete the vision for the Physical Education and Sport Precinct delivering the Indoor Sports Centre with multi-purpose courts, strength and conditioning areas, cardio rooms, PE classrooms and expanded gymnastics facilities, as well as completed outdoor multipurpose courts adjacent to the Athletics Hub and a new underground car park.

When completed in early 2028, the precinct will be the most significant capital investment in MLC’s history.

Community and connection are also central to the design of the Aquatic Centre. Level 2 includes a spectator viewing area overlooking the main pool and the flexible space of the Marjorie Nicholas Hub, designed for learning, connection and community gatherings, and serviced by a commercial kitchen. Just outside as part of the future outdoor courts, the Wong Family Athletics Hub featuring a sprint track, long jump and high jump facilities will open later this year. And connecting to the secondary campus, the Ferraro Family Wellbeing Garden is a landscaped space providing students with a place to relax and connect during the school day.

Also part of Phase 1, the enhanced Junior School playground features two adventure play zones connected by a landscaped nature walk, a grassed oval, several outdoor learning and gathering spaces, and the Ng and Wong Family Sports Court, a multi-use area that supports both PE lessons and informal sport and active recreation.

Honouring the PEC Enriching the lives of generations of MLC students With students now using the new Aquatic Centre and construction underway on Phase 2 of the Physical Education and Sport Precinct, the Physical Education Centre (PEC) has officially concluded its service after almost 40 years as one of MLC’s most significant and well-loved buildings.

Home to Physical Education classes, interschool sport training, House competitions, gymnastics, swimming and diving, health and fitness programs, and countless everyday moments, it formed a core part of the MLC experience for generations of students.

After considering whether to buy land in Richmond for outdoor sports fields or develop an indoor facility onsite, the College decided to make the most of our Kew campus. David Loader, MLC Principal 1979-1996 shared aspirations for the new PEC in The Star in 1987, “It is hoped that this centre will not only make school more attractive to our students, but that it will also help them to achieve a higher self-esteem and therefore enable them to cope more effectively with further studies, in the work force and with life in general.”

Echoing messages of today, a report on the commencement of construction of the new Indoor Physical Education Complex in the October 1986 edition of The Star describes why the College saw an essential need to upgrade and expand its sporting facilities: “With overwhelming evidence that physical education has far reaching beneficial effects on children’s development, and that in particular girls are disadvantaged because they tend to be less well catered for in this area, the College is convinced the complex will provide far reaching benefits for every student.”

Over generations, the PEC went on to fulfil these ambitions as it supported expanded Physical Education and Sport programs.

For students, it became a place closely associated with friendships, personal achievements, challenges overcome and memories that have lasted long beyond their school years.

For many former and current staff, the PEC was also a place where generations of students were encouraged, coached and supported, creating memories that extended well beyond the classroom and sporting arena.

To mark the end of an era, we invited alumnae, including one who was there on opening day in 1987, to reflect on what the PEC meant to them.

Their warm responses were all about the opportunity and community the facilities enabled for them and their peers.

Andrea Suttle (Trembath 1991) was part of the student demonstration teams on the day the PEC officially opened in 1987. She recalls, “I remember being in the gymnastics display.

We used the fully sprung floor. We did a routine to twisting by the pool. And I think it must have been a bit of a nod to the new pool as well, but we were really excited and happy to be involved in the gymnastics display.” While Andrea finished her MLC career as Rowing Captain in 1991, she recalls, “In that first year, I did a lot of gymnastics. I was in the gym before school, lunchtime and after school. I really enjoyed that time with my friends and having the opportunity to train in a gym like that was amazing.”

Claire Endersbee (Elton 2009), who was both Captain of Boats in 2008 and later returned to MLC as a Rowing Coach, is another alumna who has ‘spent countless hours’ in the PEC. Claire reflected, “the PEC delivered a lot of different opportunities to different people in different ways, and it was important to people for a variety of reasons. If it gave students

The Star, October 1986 the opportunities that it presented me, the love, the laughter, the joy, the opportunities, I think that’s something to be extremely proud of.”

Spending a lot of time in the PEC, Anna Palmer (Widdowson 2008) was both Basketball and Snow Sports Captain in her final year at MLC. She recalls the impact, “I came here and I could be confident. I could try new things and it also was a great way to build my community outside of my friendship group… I’ve kept a lot of those friends and we often touch base when we go skiing. I play basketball now with an MLC student who was three years above me and I used to play with her sister during school.”

The same sentiment of connected community is felt by Grace Cox, 2026 Swim Captain, who recently concluded her 10-year swimming career in the PEC pool. At the official opening of the new Aquatic Centre, she reflected on what has made the MLC pool such a special place for her: “Whilst swimming taught me discipline, commitment and resilience, some of my most meaningful memories came from the people around me. They came from watching learn to swim students grow in confidence as they developed skills they once thought were out of reach. They came from coaching and leading younger students at GSV carnivals and seeing the excitement, pride and sense of belonging that sport can create. They came from being part of a community that celebrates effort, encourages growth and supports one another both in and out of the pool.”

While the PEC has reached the end of its service, the values and sense of community it fostered remain unchanged. Encouraging girls to be active, build confidence, challenge themselves and find connection through physical activity will continue to be an important part of the MLC experience for generations to come. The buildings may change, but the experiences they create for students endure.

Strong showing in sport From House sport to GSV competitions, sporting clubs and the new adventure sport programs, MLC has many ways for students to be involved in sporting life at MLC. While House sport revolves around the major annual carnivals, termly lunchtime competitions offer students another way to support their House.

A powerhouse of activity that extends beyond the school day, MLC’s co-curricular sport programs see the College

field teams in the GSV weekly competitions and carnival sports, running successful sport programs and clubs such as MLC Aquatic, Stars Netball, Rowing and the newly formed MLC Diving Club. The new Adventure Sport portfolio continues the long running Snowsports and Kayak programs while adding surfing, skateboarding and indoor climbing to the mix!

Maths Week MLC came alive with curiosity and creativity as students across the College celebrated all things mathematical 10-13 March. Students took part in daily puzzles, challenges, competitions and games, bringing energy, teamwork and a shared love of mathematics to every event.

A highlight this year saw enthusiastic Year 4 and 6 students visit their secondary peers at lunchtime for a series of fun, hands-on activities. From designing a banner filled with as many mathematical symbols as they could, to building and racing paper aeroplanes, the session connected students across the College in a wonderful display of problem-solving and joy in learning.

Reconciliation Week From our youngest learners in Kindle to our most senior students, MLC’s extensive Reconciliation Week program reached across our community to connect us with Aboriginal history, culture and country. Special assemblies and lunchtime activities encouraged students to delve into Aboriginal artwork and design: Aunty Tarina Fanning hosted Art Symbols workshops, Jinibara and Bundjalung artist Natashia Corrigan-Ellis demonstrated her possum cloak burning designs, and Boon Wurrung woman Bianca Easton shared a workshop on traditional weaving.

Continuing with our annual AFL Reconciliation Round match, this year against Melbourne Girls’ Grammar, the inclusion of some of our current First Nations students was at the heart of the event. Guided by Aunty Thara and the Ngargee dancers, they created a special dance that represented all of their cultures, which they performed before the first bounce.

Year 10 play

PEC hosts a final House Cheer

Fitchett Hall was transformed into a 1940s munitions factory on Monday, 18 and Tuesday, 19 May, as our Year 10 Drama students presented the play Badger, written by American playwright Don Zolidis. Students thoughtfully brought each of their characters to life, creating an emotional and engaging piece of theatre. Strong ensemble work underpinned the production, driving the narrative and, supporting powerful individual performances.

On Friday, 20 March students and staff gathered for the annual House Cheer Competition, the last to be held in the PEC. With record participation, students displayed house spirit in abundance, putting on a dazzling display and supporting each other.

Music Mosaic On Friday, 12 June, 468 Music students proudly showcased their talent and hard work to appreciative families and friends over two sold-out performances at the annual Music Mosaic concerts. From the Junior School Concert Choir to Glenferrie Percussion to the full Concert Orchestra, students in all MLC’s large ensembles and choirs took to the Assembly Hall stage in this extraordinary annual musical event.

A wonderful opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate and appreciate the remarkable talent of our young musicians and are a testament to the talent and dedication of our students and the Music Department staff.

Girls supporting girls From flying solo around the country to representing Australia at the Winter Olympics, our students have delighted in championing each other as they accomplish some truly extraordinary things.

Rising before dawn on Friday, 20 February, over 150 students and staff were sitting in Flockart Hall, waiting with anticipation to watch Indra Brown (Year 10) compete in the Freeski Halfpipe at the 2026 Winter Olympics, held in Milano Cortina, Italy.

Proudly wearing their green and gold, Indra’s peers wrote messages of encouragement, made posters and cheered for their Olympian classmate.

At just 16 years old, Indra was the youngest member of the Australian team, which makes her achievement of fifth place in her debut games even more incredible!

She joined 19 Old Collegians who have competed across both the Summer and Winter Olympics, including gold medalist aerial skier and this year’s Chef de Mission for the Australian Winter Olympics Team Alisa Camplin-Warner (1992), and fellow gold medalist aerial skier Lydia Lassila (1999) who also attended the 2026 Games as an expert commentator for Channel 9.

In Term 2, Year 12 student pilot Rose Donald took to the skies, as she attempted to set the Guinness World Record as the youngest female pilot to complete a solo journey around Australia.

Departing Essendon Fields Airport on Sunday, 5 April in a Cessna 172, Rose’s trip around the country would take her over the Daintree Rainforest, to sunsets in Broome and beyond!

Her extraordinary journey also raised money for Little Wings, a children’s charity that provides free, professional and safe flight and ground transportation for sick children and their families living in regional and remote NSW, QLD and ACT. Meanwhile back in their classrooms at MLC, Junior School students followed Rose’s six week journey as part of their Interdisciplinary Studies unit that included learning across Digital Technologies, Geography and Science. Tracking and mapping Rose’s journey across Australia, they explored how weather conditions, visibility, and safety considerations impacted her route and decision-making.

After more than 15,000 kilometres, 25 airports and 41 days in the air, Rose touched back down in Melbourne on Saturday, 16 May, greeted by proud family and an enthusiastic group of MLC supporters who were holding aloft a poster created by Junior School students to celebrate her return.

Enchantment and imagination in early childhood education Reggio Emilia-inspired glow room In Term 1, a pop-up ‘Black Light Room’ invited Kindle children to explore light, darkness and imagination in a way that reflected the principles of the Reggio Emilia approach, prompting new ways of seeing, wondering and engaging with materials.

The space was designed as an immersive experience, filled with glowing materials and playful light sources that transformed the atmosphere from a traditional learning setting. From babies through to four-year-olds, Kindle students were invited to enter the space in small groups, to experiment, explore and respond to the unique sensory environment.

While the experience appeared magical and playful on the surface, it was grounded in thoughtful pedagogy. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia concept of the environment as the “third teacher”, the space was intentionally designed to spark curiosity, imagination and deep thinking.

they naturally began forming theories about how light behaves. These investigations supported symbolic thinking, storytelling, collaboration and creative problem-solving.

Importantly, the space encouraged educators to observe how children responded to an environment that invites mystery and fantasy. Darkness, rather than being seen as a limitation, became a provocation for inquiry, prompting children to experiment, imagine and communicate their ideas in different ways.

The project was part of Kindle’s ongoing research into enchantment and imagination in early childhood education.

By thoughtfully curating environments that inspire wonder, educators aim to nurture joyful, meaningful learning experiences for the youngest members of the MLC community.

For the children, however, the experience can be summed up more simply: a room full of discovery, curiosity, enchantment and delight.

The Black Light Room also explored the idea of light as a “language” for children’s learning. As students interacted with glowing objects, shadows and reflective surfaces,

Mursal Sadaat, a member of the Afghanistan Women’s National Soccer Team and a human‑rights advocate spoke to students about refugee experiences, social change and immigration policies.

Building transferable skills for the future

The big picture purpose of MLC’s VCE Core

As a teacher and a mother of two girls, I often think about what I want my students and my own children to know when they finish school — and I realise it’s not just about what they will know, but what they are equipped to do in a constantly changing world.

I want them to look at information and ask not just, “Is this real?” but also “Is this how it should be?”

More and more, I’m noticing a desire in students to simply be given the information — the facts they need to pass the exam. And while that’s understandable, it’s not enough.

And that’s where our work as educators becomes so important.

If we want girls to step into the world as active, capable citizens — young people who question, create and act — we must deliberately develop the skills they need to succeed and to lead.

One way MLC does this is through the Year 11 VCE Core, a year-long compulsory subject for all VCE students, developed through a multi-year partnership between MLC and La Trobe University. The subject aims to support students to understand and build transversal skills across three core areas: critical thinking, creative thinking and communication.

Understanding skills and self The year begins with the big picture, helping students understand the purpose of the subject and these skills matter for both their current lives and their future pathways — and then supporting them to identify these skills in themselves.

We begin by using a rubric to unpack the elements of each skill, helping students to understand what each skill is and to recognise them in practice. They then complete a self‑assessment questionnaire, administered by La Trobe, which provides a personalised snapshot of their strengths and areas for growth against the rubric. This bespoke assessment tool is unique to MLC. It uses a co-designed framework that was developed in partnership with La Trobe, and refined through extensive student feedback as the course has developed over the last three years.

While the reports are processed, students begin explicit skill development, completing practical activities centred on each of the three core skills, such as: For communication, how to effectively participate in small‑group discussions by speaking clearly, listening actively, using evidence, respecting others’ ideas, and making sure everyone has the chance to contribute.

Within critical thinking, explore concepts such as recognising confirmation bias, practising intellectual humility, checking sources, and avoiding common fallacies.

In creative thinking, learn how the brain generates ideas and explore strategies to train their own thinking.

Reflecting the principles of a growth mindset, these activities reinforce that skills are not fixed — they can be actively developed over time, with self awareness and practice.

Tim Johnston, CEO and Founder of Powrhouse, shared how he moved from finance to starting his own business helping families transition away from gas after becoming concerned about the future his daughters would inherit due to climate change.

Kit McMahon (1989), CEO, Women’s Health in the South East and Director of Tradeswomen Australia spoke about issues in gender equity through a real‑world lens, helping students connect their classroom learning with lived and professional experience.

“If we want girls to step into the world as active, capable citizens — young people who question, create and act — we must deliberately develop the skills they need to lead in an ever‑changing world.”

Goal setting for skill development Towards the end of Term 1 students receive their self‑assessment, identifying their current level on the rubric, and highlighting areas for growth on the next level up. For example, if they are currently working at Communication Level 1, they identify Level 2 criteria.

They set one goal per skill, focusing on an observable behaviour and outline actions to improve. For example, a student might choose the indicator “clarifying meaning” in Communication. They then identify the actions they will take to strengthen this skill.

In Terms 2 and 3, students are provided structures opportunities to practise, refine, and strengthen these skills.

Skills-focused learning Term 2 focuses on real-world issues, with skill development embedded in learning tasks designed around three key topics: gender equality, immigration policies, and climate change.

Students explore the issues through prescribed texts, supported by a Library Guide that helps them investigate their own questions about each topic. They record their thinking and research in a class workbook, allowing them to track their learning and reflections over time.

The aim is not only to inform students about major contemporary issues, but to develop critical thinking as they evaluate sources by questioning reliability, identify biases, compare perspectives, and make evidence‑based judgments.

Taking informed action In Term 3, students move from classroom-based learning and research to actively contributing to the world around them.

They identify organisations that support people affected by the issues they’ve explored in Term 2 and then think creatively about how they can contribute — whether by supporting those organisations or initiating their own independent action.

This year, students will take on a Service‑Learning Action Project, working with community partners to see firsthand how their efforts can create positive change. As part of this process, they will engage with organisations directly, and later present their work to peers, parents, and community members at a VCE Core Forum in September.

The capstone of the subject comes in Term 4, as students complete a second self-assessment to track their progress.

In this stage, we then connect the skills to who they are as Year 11 student and complete the VCE Core learning with workshops centred on maximising their level in each skill and enhancing their exam‑preparation techniques.

Next steps Now in its third year, the VCE Core continues to evolve. As it does, the question we keep asking is: what are we doing that is making a difference, and what might we do next? Small, intentional steps matter. Over time, they shape students into curious, capable and ethical young people — ready to engage thoughtfully with the world.

Guest speakers with lived experience on each topic strengthen real‑world connection. After each session, students review the speaker’s message and analyse how effectively they communicated their ideas, which then links back to the skills they are developing.

Digital Technology encouraging global citizenship From an MLC classroom to Nigeria, MLC students have benefited from an innovative opportunity to extend their skills while also giving back through an initiative developed by Digital Technology and Media teacher, Mr Christian Williams.

MLC’s Digital Technology course focuses on innovation, global citizenship, and authentic learning, providing students with strong foundational digital skills. Through his involvement in the Teaching Excellence Program, run by the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership (VATL), Christian identified an opportunity to create a structured extension pathway for highly capable learners in the Junior Secondary School (Years 7 and 8) who were ready for deeper challenge and real-world problem-solving.

Leveraging connections and partnering with Swinburne University of Technology’s School of Engineering, he devised a lunchtime extension activity in 3D Printing and Design open to all Year 8 students. The College had already implemented several 3D printers in collaborative classroom spaces, so Christian and his students could hit the ground running.

Targeted learning and explicit instruction in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) programs were crucial in setting students up for success. Supported by Swinburne experts in 3D-printed prosthetics, students first designed prosthetic components, such as finger splints, and were soon looking for a real-world application for their newly developed skills.

Amazingly, a connection halfway across the world provided the perfect partnership opportunity, benefiting both MLC students and a community in Nigeria. Drawing on a contact first made in 2016 when he was a finalist in the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize, Christian also had a blueprint for collaboration through a maternal health care initiative that he helped to establish in his previous school.

Having already seen the benefit of using digital technologies and skills to empower disadvantaged communities and improve health outcomes, Christian reached out again to explore how a new collaboration with MLC might create a similar impact.

Using the funds from his VATL Teaching Impact Fellowship, Christian arranged to buy and ship a 3D printer to a school in Lagos, Nigeria. MLC students were able to see their work come to life, watching over Zoom as students more than 14,000 kilometres away printed their designs into useful health tools.

The authentic partnerships created deeper connection for students, who became more active learners as they progressed through the project. Christian observes, “Engagement levels were consistently high, driven by authentic collaboration with Swinburne University experts and peer connections with students in Nigeria. Exposure to real-world industrial design environments and global health applications deepened students’ understanding of how digital technologies can create meaningful social impact. Student feedback indicated that they valued both the technical learning and the opportunity to contribute to a genuine problem-solving context.”

Year 8 student Emily reflected on how her learning translated to real-world outcomes: “Initially, I joined this project as a way to learn a new skill in design and 3D printing. It has turned out to be much more than just that. The 3D printing project has really opened our eyes to different and new technology, and it’s given us an insight into the real-life applications of 3D printing. We’ve learnt new skills in designing, and it has also been great connecting with school students from Nigeria.”

Following this success, Christian is exploring scaling the program, looking to trial a 3D printing lab in rural Thailand, partnering with the Senior School-linked Global Public Service Academies (GPSA) Study Tour in November. The tour is for Year 11 students interested in a career in health, and this initiative would extend the opportunity for more MLC students to benefit not only by developing skills in technology but also by helping to contribute solutions to real world problems.

Creating a home away from home Meet the new Head of Boarding Since joining MLC at the beginning of the year as Head of Boarding, Alana Murdoch has quickly immersed herself in the life and community of the boarding house.

Alana did not originally set out to work in boarding schools.

In fact, she says she “fell into it” early in her teaching career and immediately knew she had found the right fit.

Originally from North East Victoria, where her parents owned a local supermarket, Alana describes herself as “a country girl at heart” and says her upbringing shaped her understanding of the opportunities boarding can provide young people.

“I really feel like boarding would have opened up opportunities and experiences for me growing up,” she says.

“That sense of independence and everything these students get to experience through boarding is really special.”

Now in her 20th year of teaching, with 19 years connected to boarding, Alana says helping girls feel safe, supported and genuinely cared for is central to boarding life.

“We feel deeply privileged to be able to look after somebody else’s child,” she says.

“When girls know they are safe, supported and heard, they feel comfortable being themselves,” she says. “It’s often the small day-to-day moments, conversations and encouragement that matter most.”

Living onsite with her family, including her young daughters and much-loved dogs, Alana is already embracing the warmth and spirit of MLC Boarding. At the recent Boarders Birthday celebration, the boarders created an ‘op-shop wedding’ theme for the party before spontaneously deciding the family dogs should become part of the festivities.

“It was hilarious,” Alana says.

Asked what she hopes they will remember most about their boarding years, Alana’s answer is simple.

“That somebody cared for them,” she says. “That they felt looked after and knew somebody was always in their corner supporting them.”

She also hopes they remember “the moments that make them smile”.

“Probably some moments I shouldn’t know about,” she laughs.

Alana believes consistency, fairness and strong relationships help create a genuine sense of home for boarders.

National Boarding Week National Boarding Week is a time to celebrate the friendships and spirit that make boarding life so special. A highlight of the week was our Boarders Birthday Cakes initiative - a project that began at MLC in 2025 and has now grown into a national movement with the Australian Boarding Schools Association.

This year, we were delighted to host boarders from 10 schools with over 150 boarders on campus. Together, they created 107 birthday cakes to deliver to families staying at Ronald McDonald House Charities. Thank you to our partner organisations It’s the Little Things Community, Red Frog Foundation and Chartwells for their collaboration and to our partner schools for their enthusiasm and support.

Honouring community, growth and achievement at MLC The final weeks of the 2025 school year saw the MLC community come together for a series of end-of-year celebrations that recognised the many different ways students contribute to College life.

Last year also saw MLC expand its end-of-year celebrations with the introduction of two new events: the P–6 Celebration Morning and the Years 7–11 Celebration Evening. These two events complement existing traditions that bring our community together, such as MLC Founders Day, the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony, Year 12 Valedictory Dinner and Year 6 Valedictory Celebration.

The new events also marked one of the first times in recent history that the entire Junior School, and separately all

students in Years 7–11, had come together for shared endof-year celebrations. The occasions created opportunities for students across year levels to recognise and cheer on one another while strengthening connections across the broader College community.

Principal Julia Shea said the new events were created to celebrate more than academic achievement alone.

“One of my great joys last year was attending the P–6 Celebration Morning and the Years 7–11 Celebration Evening,” Ms Shea said. “I have championed these new events because I believe deeply in the power of celebration to bring a community together.”

The celebrations also introduced new awards: Academic Growth Award, which recognised students who had demonstrated strong learning progress and commitment

to achieving their personal best throughout the year, and the MLC Student Stars Award, which recognised the commitment of students to the MLC values as they interact with their community.

The Junior School Celebration Morning brought together Junior School students in Prep-Year 6, their families and staff in Assembly Hall to reflect on the year and recognise participation and contribution across many areas of school life, including learning, music, sport and service. The whole Junior School then joined together in a spirited singing of the School Song, A Vision Splendid, a tradition that was also one of the defining moments of the Years 7–11 Celebration Evening.

For students in Years 7–11, the inaugural Celebration Evening at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre created a very different style of event to traditional school presentations evenings. Bringing together students, staff, families and alumnae, the evening combined student performances, House spirit and recognition of achievement in an atmosphere both celebratory and distinctly MLC. In line with our strategic priority to enhance connections between our community, we were also delighted that a number of Old Collegians agreed to be a part of this

special evening. Thank you to Imogen Barnett (2013), Leah Columbine (2019), Enya Cai (2011), Tess Melville (2007) and Dr Tam Quinn (2002) for assisting us to present student awards in Academic Attainment, Academic Growth, MLC Student Stars, as well as excellence and attainment in Music and Sport.

Reflecting the strong connection between past and present students, and the enduring spirit of the MLC community, a stand out moment came as students joined together in a mass singing of A Vision Splendid, with many alumnae in the audience also rising to sing alongside them.

Across the events, students were recognised not only for academic achievement, but also for the many ways they contribute to the life of the College.

“What I love most about all these events is that they are not simply about awards,” Ms Shea said.

“They recognise effort, courage, contribution, kindness and personal growth. They bring our students together to support and cheer for one another.”

Together, the 2025 end-of-year events captured the spirit, pride and connection that continue to shape the MLC community.

Celebrating our Class of 2025 Even as they embraced the academic challenges of Year 12, the Class of 2025 took the time to make the most of their opportunities and immerse themselves in life at MLC. Along the way the cohort created special memories and lasting bonds that will continue long after their final walk through the Krome Gates.

“I am incredibly proud of the way the Year 12s have made the most of every opportunity,” says Principal Julia Shea. “I would particularly like to congratulate our VCE Duces, Grace Gonzales and Angela Yin, and our IB Diploma Duces, Nishka Khanna, Anna Wang, Eliza Zhang and Mary-Jane Zhang. I also extend congratulations to our VCE Dux Secunda, Shirly He, and our IB Diploma Secundae, Madeleine McGregor and Kaylene Tan.” “At MLC, we encourage a growth mindset, where our students see that their potential isn’t set in stone: it grows through continued effort, goal setting, reflection and the right support. When students are given that confidence, they embrace challenges, learn from setbacks, and develop resilience. These qualities not only lead to strong academic results but also prepare them for success well beyond Year 12.”

“When girls are encouraged and supported to take risks and lead, they achieve strong results and develop the self-belief that carries them well beyond Year 12.”

Madeleine McGregor acknowledged the support and guidance she received throughout the two-year program, crediting the MLC IB teaching team for their empathetic and supportive approach: “They’re just so good at checking in on you, especially in Year 12. They’ve been incredibly encouraging and helped me believe in myself.”

Grace Gonzales agreed, saying, “The network of support is something I love talking about. I’m immensely grateful for all the teachers—they’re so willing to make time for you.”

“I’m really happy that all the hard work this year has paid off,” shared Angela Yin. “I’m also really happy for my friends and seeing their amazing results as well.”

Madeleine is now studying a Bachelor of Science at Melbourne University, intending to major in Neuroscience.

Elise Nixon, a boarding student whilst at MLC, is preparing to study a Bachelor of Agribusiness at University of Armidale in 2027 - combining her lifelong love of the land with a newfound passion for business.

Completing Year 12 was a balancing act for Amber, quite literally as she managed her school commitments alongside an intense schedule as an elite gymnast.

In a testament to her success in the IB Diploma Programme at MLC, where she embraced every opportunity across science, leadership and co-curricular activities, she has continued her dedication to both her studies and life outside of the classroom as she settles in both study and life as a resident at Ormond College: “This new freedom to create my own routines and more actively pursue my interests has made me far more reflective about the direction I want my life to take. The breadth of opportunities offered in my degree and at college has been especially crucial ...

I wake up each day looking forward to opportunities for intellectual growth.”

Madeleine is a shining example of what it means to make the most of your school years, an attitude that she is fully embracing as she continues her tertiary studies.

“More than anything, I hope to continue discovering what genuinely motivates and fulfils me as I shape the next stage of my life.”

Taking a break after Year 12, Elise deferred her studies to do something she has always dreamed of doing – being a Jillaroo! After making the solo trip in February, she has settled into her station hand role at a station in Central West Queensland.

“It’s hard work and the days are long but it is such an amazing experience - something that will stay with me forever.”

Elise credits her mentors with helping her navigate her unique path through school successfully: “The support, guidance, and encouragement they provided, and their understanding of my agriculture background helped me immensely.

They knew the career path I wanted to do after school was different to other graduates, helping me throughout the tough times with my academics and boarding to keep my eye on the bigger picture at the end.”

Having represented Hong Kong on the international gymnastics stage, Amber has an intimate understanding of the science and committment that goes into competing at the highest physical level. This knowledge will continue to deepen as she embarks on a Bachelor of Science at Monash University.

With majors in Physiology and Anatomy and Developmental Biology, Amber is looking to give back to the sport that has given her so much success throughout her life so far: “I’m looking forward and planning ahead to a Master’s or Doctor of Physiotherapy to help people through injuries, rehabilitation, and improving physical condition - like I experienced when pursuing my sport.”

A different path, the same purpose Reflecting on 26 years of the IB Diploma

When MLC became one of Australia’s early adopters of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme in 1998, it wasn’t looking to replace the VCE. It was looking to provide students an alternative pathway through their senior years.

The adoption of the IB Diploma was a natural step for MLC, aligned with the College vision and mission and offering an intellectually challenging course that encourages students to think critically and communicate thoughtfully across cultures and perspectives.

Twenty-six years later, the considerations remain just as relevant.

At MLC, while every student follows her own pathway through Senior School, the purpose is the same: for students to walk through the Krome Gates equipped with an education that inspires them to be citizens the world needs. Today, alongside the VCE, the IB Diploma Programme continues to provide an important pathway option for students whose strengths, interests and preferred way of learning align with its distinctive approach.

Both are academically rigorous pathways that prepare students for university and life beyond school, but they do so in different ways.

For students who choose the two-year commitment to the IB Diploma, the experience extends beyond subjects and assessment.

Over their two years, students undertake the three core elements of the IB Diploma Programme: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS), while also studying six subjects across a deliberately broad range of disciplines. In their second year of study, students select three of their six subjects to focus on as ‘higher level’ subjects, supporting specialisation in areas of strength. Taken together, these experiences encourage students to think critically, identify their interests and strengths, undertake sustained research, reflect on different perspectives and apply their learning beyond the classroom.

What makes the experience distinctive at MLC, however, is not simply the programme itself. Within MLC’s all-girls learning environment, they are encouraged to challenge themselves, ask thoughtful questions and develop the confidence to pursue their own ideas.

Students also spend two years working closely with the same teachers, developing relationships that support them academically and personally. For IB Dux Nishka Khanna (2025), that support made all the difference. “I think the best part about the IB at MLC is that you’re never alone. It’s very, very supportive. The biggest thing that helped me through this year was constantly staying in contact with teachers and just leaning on that support.”

Her advice to future students is simple: “Never stop asking questions. Make sure that you are constantly communicating with your teachers because they are all experts in their subjects and they love their subjects.”

Many graduates describe those same relationships and habits as having shaped the people they have become.

Emily Bo Yi Austin (2000) was a part of the first graduating cohort. Now Counsel at Debevoise & Plimpton in Hong Kong, she says her experience in the IB Diploma developed the research, writing, presentation and critical thinking skills she continues to use as a lawyer. Just as importantly, it fostered intellectual curiosity and independent learning, giving her the confidence to pursue opportunities overseas.

For Gabriella Karge (2005), now Global Alliance Director at CBRE, one of the lasting benefits was learning to see problems from different perspectives. “The IB gave me permission to be curious across disciplines.” Today, she leads teams across multiple continents and credits the programme with helping her develop the ability to collaborate across cultures and remain open to different ways of thinking.

Founder and Venture Builder Betty Zhang (2018) reflects that the programme encouraged intellectual risk-taking and a genuine love of learning that continues to shape her career in science, medical research, innovation program management and venture capital. “I was valued as a well-rounded person, not just a student in a classroom.”

She also recalls the friendships she built with students from different backgrounds and the encouragement she received from teachers who challenged and supported her throughout the programme.

For Eleanor Doig (2010), who is now working as Assistant Director, Pacific Division in the Australian Government Department of Defence, the breadth of the IB Diploma has continued to influence her career. “The programme gave me confidence to know that I could specialise or diversify, depending on what my career required.”

Although their careers have taken them in different directions, the reflections of MLC’s IB Diploma graduates share striking similarities. They speak about curiosity, resilience, independence, thoughtful leadership and the confidence to embrace opportunities they may never have imagined while they were at school.

The strength of the program is also reflected in the expertise of the teachers who deliver it.

Many of MLC’s IB Diploma Programme teachers contribute well beyond the College as examiners, workshop leaders, programme evaluators and leaders of subject networks across Victoria and Tasmania. Their involvement ensures students benefit from educators who are not only experienced classroom teachers, but who also help shape the ongoing development of the IB Diploma courses they deliver.

As MLC reflects on more than a quarter of a century of offering the IB Diploma Programme, it is not simply celebrating an internationally recognised qualification.

It is celebrating generations of young women who have gone on to make their own unique contribution to the world.

Whether in law, business, science, public policy or countless other fields, they continue to demonstrate the curiosity, resilience and sense of purpose that have long been part of an MLC education.

Whether students choose the VCE or the IB Diploma Programme, the College’s purpose remains unchanged: to provide an education that inspires students to be citizens the world needs.

That confidence has supported a career spanning diplomacy, international policy and government, where she draws on the ability to adapt, communicate and think across disciplines.

Junior School Celebration for Mother’s Day on Wednesday, 6 May

We started the year with our annual Garden Party on Saturday, 31 January attracting record numbers. While we have photos from some of our events featured on this page, there are many more class and year level gatherings and parent-daughter events that all contribute to the incredible feeling of community we enjoy while our children are enrolled at MLC – and often beyond.

The PA is thriving in no small part due to the enthusiasm and dedication of our volunteers. Volunteering is an opportunity to role model the value of getting involved to our children. Your active participation demonstrates the importance and the impact that being an active member of the community can have.

Creating opportunity, building futures MLC Foundation update

Serving as Chair of the Foundation offers a unique perspective on the life of a school community, not only where we are today, but where we are heading and the legacy we are collectively building for future generations.

What inspires me most deeply is the very real difference generosity makes in the lives of young people. Over the past year, philanthropic support directed entirely towards our students has produced tangible and meaningful outcomes across our community. These include scholarships awarded, facilities improved, and with them, greater opportunities for students to learn, belong, and grow in confidence and capability.

One of the most significant milestones this year has been the opening of Phase 1 of the new Physical Education and Sport Precinct, encompassing the Aquatic Centre and enhanced Junior School Playground and a number of other spaces supporting student wellbeing, physical activity, and health. This outstanding project is a powerful testament and lasting symbol of what a community can achieve when guided by a shared purpose and long-term vision.

The Official Opening on Thursday, 18 June celebrated the community whose generosity has brought this vision to life, uniting donors, staff, students, and friends of the College.

Among the speakers was Jill Forsyth (Guerin 1968), who also reflected on the powerful legacy created by a united community, “When I was a student at MLC in the 1960s, the facilities were outstanding for their time. The opportunities available to us were made possible by the vision and generosity of earlier leaders and benefactors. It is inspiring to see what has been made possible through the strength

of our community. The opening of this magnificent space marks an important milestone, but it is only the beginning.

With continued community support, we can bring the indoor sporting facility to life.”

As we now look ahead to Phase 2, the future Sport Centre, we do so with a strong sense of collective ambition and genuine optimism. This next chapter is an invitation for our community to be part of something enduring. We continue to seek the support of our community to help bring this vision to life. Our focus remains on creating environments that will serve not only current students, but for those who will follow them for generations.

Alongside this, our Annual Giving Appeal remains vital to sustain and expand scholarships and help ensure that access and inclusion remain at the heart of our community values. We are also profoundly grateful for the increasing number of bequests being confirmed, as well as those already realised. These extraordinary acts of foresight and generosity represent deeply personal legacies, reflecting enduring confidence in the College and a commitment to its future.

The generosity of our donors continues to shape the future of the College in meaningful and lasting ways. Every gift makes a difference. In 2025, the generosity of our donors created opportunities for students through enhanced programs, expanded scholarship support, and improved learning environments. The impact of this philanthropy extends far beyond the year itself, helping to shape brighter futures and ensuring the College can continue to provide exceptional opportunities for generations to come.

Reconnecting with purpose Old Collegians’ Club update

There isn’t one way to be an MLC student.

It is something you only really understand once you leave.

At school, you move through a shared experience. After that, new opportunities open up. Paths diverge. Some are clear, others take time. Most are not linear.

Mine has taken me from Fine Art Photography, to Industrial Design, to Digital Product Design in tech. It has been shaped by curiosity, problem-solving, and a willingness to try things without always knowing where they would lead. I know that is true for many Old Collegians, and it is often through those shared experiences and unexpected directions that people reconnect later in life.

That is where the Old Collegians’ Club matters.

It exists to keep those relationships alive, not just to the school, but to one another. It creates space to reconnect, support each other, and better understand the many different ways lives unfold beyond school.

Following our Annual General Meeting in March, I was honoured to be elected President. We welcomed our 2026 Council, bringing together new and returning members who will help shape the year ahead. Thank you to Alex O’Keefe (1999) for her leadership as President, and to those who have contributed to the Club over time.

Our International Women’s Day event in March centred around the theme Balance the Scales, a reminder that every woman should feel safe, heard, and free to shape her own life. We were privileged to hear from Old Collegian Professor Christine Kilpatrick AO (Hogg 1970), whose reflections on family, education, opportunity and resilience spoke to the role MLC can play in shaping confidence and ambition. Her perspective reinforced something simple but important: you do not need a perfect plan, but you do need to back yourself when opportunities present. New Old Collegians’ Club Council

In April, we launched our 2026 Mentoring Program, continuing to foster relationships across year levels, industries and life stages. Often, it is simply an opportunity to speak with someone who understands the context you are coming from.

We are also proud to recognise Naomi Brockenshire (1999) as the 2025 Val Kerr Fellowship recipient, with funding supporting her project focused on improving treatment guidelines and outcomes for young people with anorexia in acute care.

The Chapel Service and Lunch earlier this term was a chance to pause, reflect and reconnect. Centred around the theme of women supporting women, we were privileged to hear from Helen Walker OAM (Price 1980), whose work with Prison Network highlighted the power of compassion, community and care in helping women rebuild their lives. We also thank Reverend Debra Saffrey-Collins (Saffrey 1979), former President of the Old Collegians’ Club, for leading a thoughtful and meaningful service.

Upcoming events including Celebration Evening and Golf Day will continue to bring Old Collegians together across the year.

Whether you are a student beginning to think about what comes next, a parent supporting that journey, or an Old Collegian reconnecting later in life, this is a community you can return to at any point.

Balancing the scales Lessons from International Women’s Day

Each year, International Women’s Day invites us to pause and take stock of progress in gender equity – not as a slogan, but as something lived, felt and shaped.

This year’s theme, Balance the Scales, asked us to look closely at the experience of inequality: how it is created, reinforced and shifted. At the MLC Old Collegians’ Club International Women’s Day event, guests were fortunate to hear from Professor Christine Kilpatrick AO (Hogg 1970), former neurologist and CEO and now Chair of the Royal Children’s Hospital Board, whose reflections anchored the theme in lived experience.

Imbalance is not always encountered through locked doors; more often, it is subtle, found in assumptions and conventions about “who should lead, who should wait, and who should be grateful simply to be included.” As Old Collegians’ Club President Alex O’Keefe (1999) observed, balancing the scales is not about lowering standards but “finally using the same ruler.” Talent is everywhere; opportunity is not, and the work lies in building pathways, networks and visibility so women can fully and equally embrace opportunity.

That work exists in the connections we form, because change is shaped not only by systems but also realised in human relationships. MLC Board Chair Lucia Cade (1984) distilled this into four deceptively simple questions: Who is in your corner?

In whose corner are you?

Where do you see the need for the scales to be rebalanced?

And what are you going to do about it?

Progress, she suggested, grows over generations through the commitment of individuals and of society. There is an architecture of equity: encouragement, advocacy and opportunity – the willingness to stand in someone’s corner as they rise, prompting the next step and paving the way. This is a strength of our MLC community, and is embodied in the Old Collegians’ Club, an intergenerational network of women supporting women, lifting one another as we move the scales toward balance.

Professor Kilpatrick’s address offered a long view of how these forces shape a career. From an MLC education that instilled confidence, to entering medicine when women were a minority, to becoming the first female Chair of the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) Senior Medical Staff and later CEO of both the Royal Children’s Hospital and the RMH, her journey showed how networks – both professional and personal – resilience and opportunity can balance the scales.

Together, the evening’s messages revealed a simple truth: balancing the scales takes commitment from individuals and society; none of this work happens in isolation. It unfolds through culture and community, through the choices we make about whom we lift, and through those who stand in our corner. This work is strengthened by networks like MLC and the Old Collegians’ Club, committed to a future in which every woman and girl can shape her own life with confidence and freedom.

Introducing Old Collegians Celebrating the diverse stories and achievements of our vibrant community of Old Collegians.

I started at MLC in Year 7 in 2016. My mum attended MLC and had such a positive experience that she wanted me to have the same opportunity. Being able to share that connection with her has always felt special and it’s something I’ve come to further appreciate even more over time.

Rowing was a real highlight for me. The early mornings, being out on the water, and the sense of teamwork are memories I’ll always value. However, the most influential experience I had at MLC was Marshmead.

The hands-on learning and the exposure to animals, plants, and the environment had a lasting impact on me. It was at Marshmead that I developed a genuine love for the outdoors and an appreciation for working with nature, which has ultimately shaped the direction my life has taken.

I always recognised that university and sitting behind a desk wasn’t the path for me. After leaving MLC, I began a carpentry apprenticeship where I enjoyed the physical hands-on nature of the work as well as the satisfaction of building something tangible. Whilst I found the work rewarding, I realised I wanted a path that allowed for

He had always hoped to send me to MLC from Prep, but as first-generation migrants, it wasn’t possible. Looking back now, it was one of the best decisions my parents ever made.

Joining partway through secondary school could have been daunting, but I quickly felt at home. The support I received, especially through the Deaf Integration Unit and my teachers, were transformative. They helped me find my voice and the confidence to be proud of who I am. That self-belief became the foundation for pursuing my dreams and developing the mindset of a global citizen, someone ready to engage with the world beyond the classroom After graduating, I followed a traditional path, completing an undergraduate degree and then a Juris Doctor. Yet, the growth mindset I developed at MLC encouraged me to think differently. While I’m a qualified lawyer, I chose not to pursue the conventional legal route. Instead, I’ve built a career in the financial corporate sector, applying my legal knowledge in new ways. I’m also

more creativity whilst still keeping me outdoors and physically active. This led me to landscape gardening, where I could combine practical skills with design and creativity. In the years since, I’ve worked across residential gardens throughout Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, developing my skills and experience before stepping into my current role as the Head Gardener at MLC. Returning to MLC has been one of my proudest achievements. It is incredibly meaningful to contribute to a place that played such a significant role in shaping who I am. Coming back in this way has been a full-circle moment and is something I am genuinely proud of.

Those lessons have stayed with me and continue to guide me toward work that feels like a natural extension of what I first discovered at Marshmead—being outdoors, creating, and working closely with the environment.

involved in alternative dispute resolution, which uses an impartial third party to help resolve conflicts outside the court system, an area that combines my passions for law, communication, and human understanding.

I have so many wonderful memories of MLC, both in and beyond the classroom. The MLC Euro History Tour was a standout: five countries in three weeks, creating lifelong friendships and opening my eyes to a world of possibilities.

Today, I’m proud to serve on the Old Collegians’ Club council. It’s my way of giving back to the community that shaped me. Working alongside extraordinary alumnae from multiple generations to deliver activities for our community is incredibly rewarding.

For me, the confidence MLC gave me defines success, the ability to connect with people from all walks of life, to listen, communicate, and lead with empathy. I entered MLC a quiet, shy student, and left through the Krome Gates with pride, confidence, and the courage to face whatever life brings.

MLC taught me to believe in myself, to work hard for what matters, and to value the strength of community. These lessons have shaped every chapter of my life.

adapting to new owners, new challenges and new expectations, but the constant has been my love for the industry and the people who make it what it is.

I joined MLC following my mum, her sisters and my great‑aunt. As a proud Fitchett member, I made friends through House sport, drama and music, even though I was a terrible singer who still loved Chorals!

During the pandemic, I led the Australian Ski Areas Association and learned a tremendous amount about community connection, government relations, collaboration and being resolute about what we could achieve against the odds, while staying mindful of the broader context. We may be a small industry in Australia, but we punch well above our weight, and recent results at the 2026 Winter Olympics prove that.

Rowing and skiing were defining parts of my senior years. Rowing taught me what it meant to be part of a team: to show up, pull your weight and trust the people beside you. Skiing became a passion as interschool snowsports were beginning. We trained at Hotham and competed at Buller and Perisher in our very cool Rip Curl‑designed uniform.

Sport built a resilience and tenacity I depend on today.

After MLC, I studied Commerce at the University of Melbourne while teaching skiing at Hotham on weekends and during holidays.

Several seasons followed, including time at Big White in Canada, before I eventually returned to the Australian ski industry. Over the years I’ve had to pivot many times,

Fifty years after leaving MLC, where I began in Junior School, I can look back on my experience with a perspective I didn’t have at the time. My school days weren’t always easy for me - something that makes far more sense to me now after being diagnosed later in life with ADHD and autism. Yet even then, I was learning to advocate for myself, to question expectations and to carve my own path.

Music was an important space for me.

I began with piano, Madrigals and choir before discovering percussion, which quickly became my favourite and is tied to some of my happiest memories. I also remember ballet classes in Junior School and listening to Dr Wood at assemblies.

After leaving MLC, I started to find my feet. I studied business administration and worked in a law firm before moving to GJ Coles, where I worked in a number of roles finishing in events management. I was eventually drawn to building and design, which led me to complete an Associate Diploma in Building and Construction - the only woman in my cohort and one of only six of the original 18 students to finish the course. My ability to excel in this field brought great educational results and a passion had finally been found.

From there, I built something I’m incredibly proud of: my own design and building

Today, at Whistler Blackcomb, one of the largest resorts in the world, I am Vice‑President and Chief Operating Officer. I love the scale, complexity and beauty of the mountains, and the passion of the people who work there.

My proudest achievement is building a life, family and career at Hotham and Dinner Plain, a journey that began at MLC and has come full circle as my own children began their journeys at Kindle, with Amy graduating in 2022.

I loved the creativity, the relationships with clients, and the satisfaction of seeing something I imagined become real.

At a time when female owned building companies were unheard of, it was incredibly satisfying to create a space where I could thrive on my own terms.

Becoming a mother reshaped my life again.

Both of my children were diagnosed with autism and ADHD, my son particularly impacted with an intellectual disability, and that experience changed the direction of my work. I built a career in disability support and became a strong advocate for families navigating the NDIS. I founded Disability Melbourne East, a Facebook community that now has more than 4,700 members. In searching for what my own children needed, I became a gatherer and sharer of information for thousands of others.

Although my school years were challenging, MLC was where I started to speak up for what I needed. Those early experiences helped shape my determination, resilience and resourcefulness. Looking back, every stage of my life, including my time at MLC, contributed to the person I am today.

Ruth Gollings (Pizzey 1945) died on 11 October 2025. Mother of Fiona Balfe (Gollings 1971) and Heather Velkov (Gollings 1973).

Susan Norma Green (1978) died on 28 July 2025. Sister of Janet Green (1977), Judith Green (1980) and Libby Lok (Green 1982).

Margaret Harvey (Scott 1955) died on 8 November 2025. Mother of Anne Harvey-Nagl (Harvey 1986).

Elizabeth Hildebrand (O’Neill 1956) died on 16 February 2026. Sister of Katharine Davies (O’Neill 1953).

Gwenda Hoad (Hughes 1938, MLC Elsternwick) died on 12 November 2025 aged 104. Mother of Janice Hoad (1973) and Carolyn Brown (Hoad 1976).

Genevieve Knight (McIntosh 1952, MLC Elsternwick) died on 28 August 2025.

Margot Overton (Cant 1958) died on 15 December 2025. Sister of Barbara Bordato (Cant 1955, deceased) and Yvonne Walker (Cant 1961).

Elizabeth Schilte (Armstrong 1956, MLC Elsternwick) died on 22 November.

Jean Smart (Bebarfald 1949) died on 12 August 2025. Sister of Hilda Bebarfald (1946, deceased), cousin of Deborah Bebarfald (1947, deceased) and Susan Bebarfald (Pincas 1951, deceased).

MLC Staff Barry Fry died on 21 October 2025. He was a dedicated staff member from 1974-1993, then casual exam supervisor until 2017. Honorary Associate Member of the Old Collegians’ Club. His students benefited from his passion for English and history subjects.

Joan Heywood (Shewan, staff 1955– 2009) died on 25 November 2025. A dedicated piano teacher for 54 years, Joan was appointed by Rev. Dr. Wood and Miss Ruth Flockart MBE. Alongside her teaching, she was an accompanist for MLC choirs and for generations of students undertaking their music examinations.

Carole Norman (Brien 1961) died on 16 April 2026. Mother of Fiona Woodward (Greenough 1990) and sister of Marcia Bennett (Brien 1958). Carole was a valued MLC staff 1981–2017 and a member of the Senior School office for 30 years.

She is fondly remembered by colleagues, students and families.

Tributes We pay tribute to the following community members and extend our condolences to their family and friends.

Jill Hobby (Price 1957) died on 10 December 2025. A student at MLC from 1952 to 1957, Jill remained deeply connected to the College throughout her life and treasured the enduring friendships she formed with her fellow MLC students. Jill was a highly valued member of MLC’s Stella Argentea Society and a passionate advocate for both the College and the education of girls. Reflecting her enduring connection with the College, Jill’s support of the Assembly Hall is recognised through a commemorative seat bearing her name.

Pearl Shue (1951) died on 8 May 2023.

Having attended MLC from 1946 to 1951, she maintained a close connection with the College. Through a bequest in her will, Pearl demonstrated her enduring commitment to MLC and its students.

Pearl has been honoured posthumously with membership of the College’s Stella Argentea Society.

Julia Sutton (Marcroft 1961) died on 8 March 2026.
