about the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s new leader.

It helped that Derek Barrs, the first Senate-confirmed FMCSA administrator since Robin Hutcheson left in 2024, built his keynote address at NTTC’s North American Safety Awards luncheon around four-star Admiral William McRaven’s famous “make your bed” speech. McRaven first delivered his inspirational message about “doing the little things” in 2014 at my alma mater, The University of Texas, and I had the pleasure of hearing from the former UT chancellor in 2021 at the ILTA Operating Conference in Houston, so I enjoyed the reference.

I also appreciated Barrs’ message. He emphasized that achieving major safety goals requires a disciplined commitment to completing the “small tasks” and maintaining high operational standards. He highlighted the agency’s efforts under new DOT Secretary Sean Duffy to strengthen and enforce commercial vehicle regulations, such as improving driver training, reforming the ELD vetting system, and ousting illegitimate operators. He also stressed the importance of strong collaboration between regulators and industry leaders in reducing roadway fatalities. “Safety isn’t a concept,” Barrs said. “It must be a culture. At FMCSA, we must have a culture of safety. It’s in our mission and I know it’s in yours. You’re hauling the most sensitive materials in complex tank trailer equipment. And whatever you’re pulling, you are hauling materials that matter to the American economy. That means, from loading to transit to delivery, the margin of error is very thin. There’s no room for shortcuts on our roadways or in your businesses, so we must continue doing the small things.”

Then I got home and he “liked” one of my posts on LinkedIn. That may seem like a small thing to you (and yeah, it could have been a staffer), but to me it’s evidence he’s sincere about increasing engagement—with carriers and the media charged with dispensing critical information. A seasoned editor told me FMCSA bosses used to engage media “actively and routinely.” Not in my eight years. Then, as I was writing this editorial, the agency’s communications director reached out to offer our group the opportunity to speak with Barrs and four other FMCSA officials about Motus, FMCSA’s revamped carrier registration system. I was shocked.

Now I’m all in on Barrs—and his team’s efforts to fight freight-related fraud.

Before his confirmation as the eighth FMCSA administrator last October— which NTTC supported—Barrs spent nearly 20 years with the Florida Highway Patrol, including three as the chief of commercial vehicle enforcement. So I believe him when he earnestly insists he’s committed to cracking down on HOS abuse, CDL mills, and “chameleon” carriers like the one he alluded to in Baltimore.

Super Ego made “60 minutes” in April, but I wrote about them two years ago, so I know the problem is persistent and prolific—and somebody needs to finally fix it.

That’s why these are the words that clinched my optimistic approval: “At FMCSA, we’re focused on reinforcing that alignment [between government and industry] and having clarity and accountability,” Barrs professed. “That means consistent enforcement for everyone. We must enforce the laws. With the previous administration—and I don’t want to say too much about that—but I can tell you there wasn’t a lot of enforcement done consistently.”

Now if he could just talk to the president about enforcing lower fuel prices. BT

INDUSTRY NEWS Alaska West Express claims ATA’s prestigious President’s Trophy Alaska West Express recently claimed American Trucking Associations’ prestigious President’s Trophy in the under 25 million miles category.

The President’s Trophy, presented by ATA’s Safety Management Council to three fleets based on miles traveled, is the association’s highest safety honor, recognizing exceptional dedication to safety on the road and in the workplace. All award winners were recognized at ATA’s 2026 Safety, Security and Human Resources National Conference and Exhibition awards banquet.

“Safety and security in trucking are at the core of everything we do,” Chris Spear, ATA president and CEO, said in a news release. “They are what keep operations running smoothly and, even more important, protect every driver on the road. The professionals in this space play a critical role in the industry’s success.

Alaska West, part of the Lynden family of companies, which includes bulk haulers LTI, Inc., and Milky Way, provides heavy haul and bulk trucking throughout the United States and Canada, specializing in shipments to and from Alaska, where it specializes in transporting liquid and dry bulk products, hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals, and petroleum products.

Andrews Logistics wins Penske award Texas-based tank truck carrier Andrews Logistics is Penske Logistics’ top liquid bulk transporter for 2025.

The chemical and lube oil hauler received the honor during a recent ceremony at the Team Penske race headquarters in Mooresville, North Carolina. Andrews earned the award by performing well on an enterprise scorecard paired with customer, operations, and sourcing feedback, Penske reported.

“Congratulations to our 2025 award recipients,” Tracy Urbanski, Penske Logistics senior vice president of operations for supply chain management, said in a news release. “They have proven to be elite members of our carrier network.

INDUSTRY NEWS Quality Depot Solutions opens New Jersey facility Quality Depot Solutions (QDS) recently established a new depot in North Bergen, New Jersey, that is strategically located near the New Jersey Turnpike, Route 9, CSX’s Ridgefield Rail Yard, and the Hudson River.

“We are proud to bring QDS to New Jersey,” Joe Acevedo, QDS vice president, said in a news release. “Entering this market gives customers a viable solution in a very limited depot market.

“We know we are going to provide unrivaled service for this region.”

The facility, located at 2200 83rd Street, offers a number of services to customers, including staging (loaded, dirty dedicated, and empty), heating, tracking, and deploying inventory from a secure facility, QDS reported. The company also can conduct multiple tests on-site, including hydrostatic pressure tests, pneumatic pressure tests, internal and external visual inspections, safety relief valve tests, and leak tests.

“I’m excited to bring a QDS depot to the Northeast, especially to this location in New Jersey,” said Randy Strutz, president of QDS parent Quality Carriers. “The Newark area is one of the most

Trimac expands ISO network in Canada Trimac is expanding its full-service ISO tank depot network with a new facility in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The depot, which opened its doors on March 23, will provide a full range of ISO tank services, including cleaning and maintenance, secure storage for empty and loaded tanks, and drayage, Trimac reported.

“Establishing a presence in Edmonton strategically positions us to better serve clients seeking efficient transportation and export solutions,” Derek Gaston, Trimac director of product development, said in a news release. “The region’s established transportation network and proximity to key industrial hubs will enable faster turnaround times and reduced logistical costs.”

The new Edmonton location at 15410 Yellowhead Trailer NW boasts access to major rail corridors and is positioned to better support customers in the mining and drilling sectors, Trimac added.

The facility joins Trimac’s existing ISO tank depot network in Markham, Illinois; Montreal, Quebec; and Mississauga, Ontario.

INDUSTRY NEWS Hoyer develops training container for US market Hoyer is expanding its container training offering to the North American market following successful implementation of the concept in Europe. A training container unit developed specifically for the United States is complete and on its way to the country, the company reported.

The Euro concept, consisting of a modified tank container and corresponding chassis, has proven to be an effective tool for knowledge transfer since its introduction, Hoyer said. The idea originated in 2013, when the company set out to present technical aspects of tank containers in a more vivid and practical way for employees, customers, and users. Since then, the concept has become an integral part of training programs, including those for public institutions such as fire departments and police forces, as well as customer events and trade fairs.

“With the new training units for the United States, we consistently continue our international training activities,” Hoyer Group CEO Björn Schniederkötter said in a news release. “Our goal is to make our technical expertise available wherever our customers and employees need it. The concept supports them in handling tank containers even more safely and efficiently.”

Since the launch of the first Hoyer training container, the educational concept has set standards throughout Europe.

What originally began as a practical solution—using individual components to clearly explain application errors and typical misuse—has evolved into a new mobile training approach that was honored with the “Dangerous Goods Award” in 2017, Hoyer shared. The training container enables realistic and safe demonstrations of technical processes and clearly illustrates complex procedures with “great success.” From industrial companies to emergency services, authorities, and military organizations, a wide variety of institutions across Europe rely on Hoyer’s training modules.

For use in the United States, however, Hoyer did not aim to simply replicate the European equipment. Due to significantly different regulatory and technical requirements in the U.S. market, the company opted for a complete redesign. The experience gained from European operations, especially the expertise of long-standing employees, played a key role in shaping the new concept.

“A direct transfer of the European equipment to the U.S. market would

not have been technically or regulatorily viable,” said Niels Merettig, Hoyer senior manager for engineering equipment.

“That’s why we developed an independent training concept that meets U.S.-specific requirements while also reflecting the multimodal application possibilities of our tank containers.”

The result is a unique training setup tailored to the needs of the U.S. market: ■ A specially engineered tank container, primarily serving as a demonstration object ■ An additional purpose‑built box container, designed exclusively for training use Together, these elements form a training module that is unique in its design, Hoyer concluded.

“The initial feedback from our customers and partners in the U.S. confirms that we are on the right track with this new training approach,” said Christian Berlin, Hoyer Group executive director of operations. “The show container and the training box are important building blocks to expand our service and training offering in North America and to provide a comprehensive training concept with standardized modules in the future.”

Report: Serious crashes level off, but threats persist Serious crashes are stabilizing but persistent and emerging road safety threats remain, according to Lytx’s 2026 Road Safety Report. The analysis, drawn from more than 341 billion miles of driving data, delivers a “compelling” look at national collision trends, reveals the most pressing driving risks fleets face today, and arms industry leaders with advanced strategies to combat evolving challenges, Lytx said.

“The 2026 Road Safety Report spotlights not only the significant victories we’ve secured but also the formidable risks that persist,” Lytx CEO Chris Cabrera said in a news release. “As we reflect on this year’s findings, I urge everyone in the fleet and transportation community to recognize the life-saving power of collective action and the impact we can make. By harnessing data and driving change through technology, we can help deliver on our shared goal of bringing every driver home safely.”

The 2026 report marks a “pivotal moment” for road safety, Lytx maintained. Collision rates have begun to level off, rising just 4% in 2025, highlighting a noticeable shift after the post-pandemic surges. Most importantly, the rate of severe crashes per mile fell by 4%, and moderately severe collisions plummeted by a substantial 41%. The National Safety Council’s estimates reinforce this

progress, noting a 12% reduction in motor vehicle fatalities in 2025, despite Americans driving a record number of miles.

Yet the data issues a stark warning: less severe crashes are climbing at an alarming pace, with minor collisions up 5% and low-severity incidents up by 16%. The construction sector is faced with a 28% year-over-year spike in overall collisions, signaling an urgent need for industry-wide intervention. Report findings include: ■ Near collisions dropped 23% from last year’s all-time high ■ Coaching efforts on device use surged 40%, reflecting intensified focus on distraction reduction ■ The top four riskiest U.S. roadways are concentrated near major airports, amplifying urban hazards ■ July remains the deadliest month for drivers, underscoring seasonal risk patterns The full version of the report offers a deep dive into: ■ Industry-specific collision and near-miss data ■ Emerging risky driving behaviors and national trends ■ The most dangerous states, metros, and roadways for drivers ■ The highest risk days and times to be on the road ■ Insights into driver coaching programs and actionable steps to reduce fleet risk.

INDUSTRY NEWS FMCSA reforms DataQs review program The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recently updated its DataQs program in an effort to improve turnaround times for truckers awaiting safety record corrections. States must now meet strict deadlines and follow a threestep independent review process when handling requests to fix data on crashes, inspections, and violations, FMCSA reported in a news release.

The system is key to maintaining accurate safety data and ensuring fair treatment for law-abiding truck drivers, the agency said. In 2024, DataQs processed more than 71,000 requests, including at least 8,300 related to crash data. “Accurate data keeps our roads safe. America’s hardworking truck drivers deserve a system that treats them fairly,” FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs said in the release. “These updates guarantee due process by ensuring drivers who challenge an inspection or crash record receive an independent, unbiased, and completed review in a timely manner.”

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association indicated its support for these “critical” changes the association says it fought for “for years,” because the old system allows drivers to “dispute erroneous violations and correct their safety records.”

“For years, we’ve highlighted the frustrating lack of due process, which routinely made it impossible for owner-operators and professional drivers to correct clearly inaccurate safety data,” said Todd Spencer, OOIDA president. “Unlike larger fleets, a singular erroneous violation can have devastating consequences for a small trucking company, which is why we pushed so forcefully for these changes.

“By requiring an independent review process, adding clear timelines, and providing greater transparency, FMCSA has made the improvements that OOIDA pushed for and that truckers deserved all along.”

Upgrading the DataQs program is a key initiative outlined in DOT Secretary Sean Duffy’s “Pro-Trucker Package” unveiled last summer following President Trump’s Executive Order aimed at improving working conditions for America’s truck drivers.

carriers, commercial motor vehicle drivers, and other stakeholders to request a review of federal and state data they believe is incomplete or incorrect.

Updates to the DataQs system were informed by public feedback to the July 31, 2025, Federal Register notice. For more information about changes to the DataQs program, see the full notice submitted by FMCSA to the Federal Register.

Key enhancements to DataQs The revised requirements establish a more streamlined framework for handling Requests for Data Review (RDRs), specifically for states receiving Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP) funding from FMCSA. General requirements: ■ States must designate points of contact for crash and inspection RDRs. ■ States are required to review requests submitted within three years of an inspection and within five years of a crash.

■ All decisions, especially those where no data correction is made, must include detailed explanations, evidence reviewed, and clear next steps in the review process.

States must participate in FMCSA program reviews and follow established policies, including those related to adjudicated citations.

Tank truckers band together in Baltimore to tackle mounting challenges By Jason McDaniel

T

he tank truck industry navigated one of the most complex operating environments in recent history in 2025—a year shaped by economic pressures, policy shifts, and planning uncertainty. And succeeding in this environment isn’t growing any easier this year, with mounting tariff repercussions and surging fuel prices further complicating capital investment decisions.

But there are some encouraging signs.

“Fundamentals have begun to improve, capacity is tightening, and we’re seeing a bit of a surge in truck orders as of late. They’re up dramatically year-over-year,” National Tank Truck Carriers President and CEO Ryan Streblow said during his president’s report at the 2026 NTTC Annual Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.

“And there are some signals of us entering a recovery period. In the chemical and energy sectors, which are core to tank truck operations, we are seeing steady—if, at times, uneven—demand.

Energy investments, infrastructure activity, and data-driven industrial

growth are providing a stronger foundation than we experienced in 2025.”

Streblow also highlighted NTTC’s regulatory and legislative priorities, ongoing work on Capitol Hill, and the importance of the upcoming midterm elections. And he insisted the association is well-positioned strategically and financially to expand its impact and deliver greater value for members, pointing to growing engagement and strong attendance as evidence. Tank Truck Week posted its second-highest attendance number last October in Kansas City, Missouri, and the 2026 Annual Conference drew over 500 attendees to Baltimore for three days of committee

meetings, expert presentations, and solutions-filled exhibit hall booths.

“We face real challenges: elevated costs, regulatory uncertainty, geopolitical risks, and political complexity,” Streblow said. “But we also see real opportunity. Freight markets are stabilizing, demand in key sectors is strengthening, investment is beginning to return, and our industry—disciplined, safety-focused, and essential—is well positioned. The tank truck sector has always been resolved. We do not simply endure change, we adapt, we innovate, and we lead.

“And as we look into 2026, I am confident—not cautiously, but firmly—that the best days of our industry are still ahead.”

executive vice chairman, who received his crystal tank truck and chairman’s portrait during the board meeting.

Mairs grew up in the industry, officially joining Bakersfield, Californiabased Cox Petroleum—which his parents acquired in 1990—at 14 years old. He spent eight years in the shop and five years on the road, hauling lube oils and fuel across the Western U.S., before moving into the office. He bought the business from his parents in 2019. “This isn’t just what I do,” Mairs said in an introductory video.

“It’s what I know, what I care about, and what I believe in.”

Mairs laid out his agenda in the video: grow and strengthen membership, increase involvement in NTTC’s Political Action Committee, and build a stronger advocacy presence in Washington. Then he took the stage to thank NTTC members for their support before closing out the conference.

“As we look ahead, my focus is straight forward,” Mairs said. “I want to continue building on the momentum we created, I want to stay engaged on advocacy, invest in our people through education and development, and ensure that NTTC continues to deliver real value for our members. I’d also encourage each of you to think about others in your organization who would benefit from being more involved. That’s how we continue to grow and strengthen this association.”

Tank Truck Institute launch NTTC officially launched the Tank Truck Institute, a nonprofit foundation dedicated to advancing education, training, and workforce development, and fostering a positive image for the tank truck industry.

“We created this foundation for one simple but powerful reason: We want to ensure that the next generation is ready and proud to carry this industry forward,” said Dr. Gina Anderson, CEO of Luma Brighter Learning and first Tank Truck Institute chair. “We all know we need more highly skilled drivers. We need more highly trained technicians.

The foundation will support education by developing tank truck-specific curriculum; provide scholarships and learning opportunities; invest in training programs that elevate safety, professionalism, and technical expertise; and build new pathways that drive workforce development, Anderson said.

“This is our moment to invest in the future of the tank truck industry, not just equipment, not just our infrastructure, but in its knowledge and learning and skills, and our biggest asset—our people,” Anderson concluded.

WAA partnership NTTC this year is partnering with Wreaths Across America to help place wreaths on veterans’ graves at Arlington National Cemetery on Dec. 19 on National Wreaths Across America Day. “Our goal is to fund at least one full trailer load of wreaths [which is approximately 4,500 wreaths], giving our members a meaningful way to honor those who have served while supporting

NTTC’s advocacy efforts,” said outgoing NTTC Chairman David Price.

Wreaths cost $17 and NTTC will receive $5 back for each wreath sponsored through the program.

“To date, Wreaths Across America has given back $25 million to nonprofit organizations since they began the $5 payback program, so that they can use those funds to support their own veteran workforce or for their own programs,” said Elisabeth Barna, founder of EAB Strategies and long-time WAA advocate. “So, NTTC will use those funds to support and honor veterans in the association, including professional drivers, technicians, dispatchers, safety personnel, tank watch technicians, office personnel, welders, and more.”

“The Distinguished Service Award is one of NTTC’s highest honors,” Evans said. “It recognizes individuals who have given their time, leadership, and expertise to help move this industry forward.”

Following a 10-year stint as Bulk Transporter editor, Conley joined NTTC in 1989 and served as president from 2006 to 2013. “John’s been a key voice in the tank truck industry for decades,” Evans said. “From the time he led NTTC as president … to his work on communications, safety, and regulatory

issues, John has helped shape the way this industry operates and how it’s represented. His knowledge, leadership, and dedication have had a lasting impact that continues to be felt to this day.”

Rush grew up driving farm trucks.

After serving in the Air Force, he entered the trucking business, hauling everything before eventually making his way into the tanker sector, where he made his mark, Evans said. Rush became an owner-operator in 1969, founded Carbon Express in 1983, and rose to NTTC Chairman in 2010. He retired after selling Carbon Express to Kenan Advantage Group in 2022.

“Over the years, he’s been a leader in

this industry, remaining engaged with NTTC and actively involved at the national level throughout his career,” Evans said. “Even in retirement, his impact and legacy continued to be felt across the nation.”

PAC update NTTC’s Political Action Committee surpassed $100,000 in donations for the sixth consecutive year during this year’s Annual Conference, hitting $112,000. NTTC members donated a record $140,675 in 2025.

Executive Forum in February, moving emissions from Tier I to Tier II and the dry bulk axle variance from Tier II to Tier I, which includes tank truck-specific issues for which NTTC aims to lead the charge. “This is a top legislative priority, and we continue to push hard to have the language included in the [current surface transportation reauthorization bill, which expires in September],” said NTTC lobbyist Britton Clarke Mullen.

The other Tier 1 priorities are electronic shipping papers, Federal Excise Tax repeal, and workforce issues. And Delilah’s Law is one of the key legislative actions that will impact the tank truck workforce. The bill, introduced by Rep. David Rouzer, a Republican from North Carolina, would prohibit states from issuing CDLs to undocumented immigrants, ensure CDL holders demonstrate English proficiency, and place drivers who don’t meet the criteria out of service.

“I want to highlight an important NTTC victory here,” Mullen said.

“Earlier versions of this bill included a mandate requiring that every current CDL holder undergo a nationwide recertification within 100 days of the bill’s enactment. Obviously, this would have been a huge operational burden on

all of your businesses, so this was your advocacy at work. We were able to get that language stripped out of the bill and then continue to move the bill forward.”

freight rates to begin a modest recovery from the bottom, Clayton said. That’s welcome news for freight-recession survivors because operational costs grew 26% faster than freight rates over the last few years, creating an unsustainable environment for many operators.

The latest report also highlights slight gains in tank truck tonnage, revenue, and tractor counts from 2024 to 2025.

Tonnage increased from 2.08 to 2.09 billion tons, tractors went from 166,492 to 167,439 units, and revenue rose from $39.4 to $39.5 billion.

Fiscal policy and tax refunds provided some stimulus, but the Iran war severely impacted the industry by driving up diesel prices; and, while inflation has cooled from its 2022 highs, it remains elevated, and the “price level” of goods has surged nearly 30% since 2020, impacting consumer behavior and freight movement.

“Going into this year, we were anticipating two cuts to the federal funds interest rate,” Clayton said.

“Now [because of the Iran war] we are definitely not expecting that.”

More positively, the 42,000 motor carrier exits since late 2022 and a decrease in tractor counts is allowing

Driver compensation report Bulk haulers continue to enjoy a competitive advantage in driver pay and lifestyle compared to the broader trucking industry, according to Cottingham & Butler’s latest Tank/Bulk benchmark report, which includes data from more than 70 fleets. A major finding is the disparity in home time. While only 9% of dry van and refrigerated drivers are home every night, 33% of tank truck drivers make it home nightly—with another 33% home three or four nights a week. This is largely due to the prevalence of shorter hauls, with 83% of tank and bulk operations involving runs of less than 500 miles, compared to only 44% in all of trucking.

Regarding compensation, the bulk sector has historically paid better, and the gap is widening, the report suggests.

Tank truck drivers now earn 11.3% more than their peers in other sectors.

Median annual pay for drivers paid by the mile reached $83,500 in 2026, while those paid by the hour—often local or short-haul drivers—saw an increase to $84,000 per year.

“If you’re out there competing for drivers against the other segments of the industry, you have a great story,” said Kim Beck, Cottingham & Butler vice president of benefits consulting.

Superior pay and quality-of-life metrics result in the lowest turnover rate in the trucking industry. The voluntary turnover rate in the tank/bulk segment sits at 36%, which is much lower than the 52% average reported across all segments. “You guys get your drivers home more often, they drive fewer miles, and they make more money, so they’re job hopping less,” Beck concluded.

“So, inherently, with that comes a problem where IT is about technology, but this is more about how we work, how we organize ourselves, what work

you complete as a fleet, what work your customers complete, and what work your vendors complete. And rethinking that is a business exercise.”

To bridge the gap, Galland proposed a comprehensive roadmap focused on workforce reskilling, strategic vendor partnerships, and federal advocacy to secure tax incentives and regulatory modernization. BT

AI adoption survey A new survey from BeyondTrucks involving 50 responses from tank truck companies reveals that while industry leaders recognize the potential for AI to improve safety and load planning, a strategic vacuum still exists, as 74% of companies surveyed lack a formal implementation plan. The analysis identifies data integration and a lack of internal expertise as the primary obstacles preventing carriers from moving past the exploratory phase.

Heniff, Usher, and SWTO secure 2025 Heil trophies

BALTIMORE, Maryland—Dan Furth used to hand out Heil trophies. This year, he’s taking one back to the home office.

The former National Tank Truck Carriers president, now chief relationship officer at Heniff Transportation Systems, was in the Heniff contingent on hand to accept the carrier’s first official North American safety championship as the Harvison-division winner Wednesday during the 2026 NTTC Annual Conference at the Marriott Baltimore Waterfront hotel.

“Everybody kept telling me, ‘Hey, nice win.’ But I didn’t do anything,” said Furth, who made his first appearance at an NTTC event since serving as the association’s president from 2012 to 2020. “It’s our safety team and the folks who move our trucks around. And we’ve got a great thing going here.

We wouldn’t have won Grand awards three of the last six years if we didn’t.

“So, it’s very rewarding, and the focus should be on that award—not me.”

Heniff was one of three companies that collected Heil trophies in NTTC’s 2025 North American Safety Contest. Usher

Transport—which is on the cover of the April/May issue of Bulk Transporter in celebration of its 80th anniversary— won the small-carrier Sutherland division to secure its third trophy; and SWTO, the fuel-hauling fleet for 7-Eleven—which also had a Champion Finalist in the Driver of the Year contest—collected its first trophy in the private-fleet division.

“The drivers and companies being recognized today are setting the standard for operational excellence,” said Derek Barrs, administrator for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, who was the keynote speaker at the awards luncheon. “You’re demonstrating what is possible whenever you do things right, and that kind of leadership is pivotal to us at FMCSA and across the country, so we want to recognize that.

“It shapes behavior, and it shapes expectations.”

Heniff’s championship is the first for the company founded

by Bob Heniff in 1998 in Oakbrook, Illinois, that will go down as a Heniff win on the all-time list. But the operation boasts four other Outstanding Performance trophies obtained through acquisitions. Miller Transporters, which Heniff purchased in 2018, prevailed in 2006 and 2015; Superior Carriers, acquired in 2019, won in 2013; and Lemmon Transport, which Superior

absorbed in 1984, won in 1978. “This is a very proud day for the entire Heniff organization,” Heniff’s chief executive officer said in a release. “We’ve reached the top of our division three times in the past six years, which really speaks to the company’s ongoing commitment to safety. That commitment is our top guiding principle and one shared by our entire workforce.”

Heniff’s professional drivers combined to record a division-clinching DOT accident frequency of 0.160 while traveling 113 million miles in 2025, helping the Class 1 carrier edge out the other four finalists in the Harvison division for carriers whose trucks ran more than 15 million miles in 2025, including Grand award winners Oakley Transport, (Class 2, 1.168), Ergon Trucking (Class 3, 0.134), LGT Transport (Class 4, 0.116), and Tidewater Transit (Class 5, 0.191).

“This Heil award means a great deal to our organization because it validates that we do things the right way to stay safe,” said Leon Lupina, vice president of safety, who accepted

Heniff’s award. “At the end of every year, when we’re setting our safety goals for the upcoming year, every VP or safety director in the organization will bring a Heil trophy to one of those calls, so we all start off with high expectations and work hard to keep everybody safe. It takes a real team effort to evolve and maintain a culture of safety every day, and I’m very fortunate to be part of a tremendous group of professionals at Heniff Transportation and its companies.

“Safety is truly our top priority.”

Usher, a family-owned bulk hauler based in Kentucky, previously won North American safety championships in 2001 and 2012, both before the contest split into multiple categories in 2014. It’s a family-owned business, but you don’t need to have our last name to make a difference here. So, I’m proud to be part of this, and I’m proud to be part of National Tank Truck Carriers, and the environment this has created to keep striving for excellence.”

Mosley credited the company’s “unapologetically” high standards for operational excellence and integrity; and thanked God, his family, his safety team, and Usher’s leaders for putting people first on the good and bad days. “When I look at the Heil trophy—which is awesome to look at—it represents God’s goodness, his faithfulness and provisions, it represents the lives saved, collisions and injuries that didn’t happen, prospering families, and the men and women who drive our trucks getting to go home to their loved ones at the end of the day.”

SWTO’s Jarrod Alsobrooks didn’t take home the William A. Usher Sr. trophy. That award went to G&D Trucking/Hoffman Transportation’s Bruce Jones, the newly crowned 2025-26 Driver of the Year. But Alsobrooks did contribute to SWTO’s first team championship, helping the Class 2 contestant post a 0.237 accident frequency in the private-fleet division, which included Grand recipients Pilot (Class 1, 0.306), R.B. Stewart (Class 3, 0.000), Sapphire Gas Solutions (Class 4, 0.000), Poolsure (Class 5, 0.000), and Chevron Phillips Chemical (Class 5, 0.000).

“The leadership at SWTO, and especially Archie Wood, our [director of transport operations], have created and cultivated, and continue to maintain, a culture within our organization that makes safety our top priority,” said Ronnie McCoy, manager of fleet safety, training, and compliance.

“All operational decisions are made with safety in mind.”

Every contestant was rated on five critical factors, including accident frequency, as determined by DOT recordable incidents; safety record improvement; vehicle maintenance, driver training, and controls; personnel safety; and other contributions to the cause of highway safety, particularly as it applies to the tank truck industry. This year’s judges were David Heller (Truckload Carriers Association), Robyn Kinsley (The Chlorine Institute), Gaige Ash (Plastics Industry Association), and Bill Reese (Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance).

Pain into purpose Bruce Jones is the third driver from G&D/Hoffman to hoist the Usher trophy

BALTIMORE, Maryland—It’s not unusual to see an American flag

on Bruce Jones’ shirt sleeve. He’s a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and his employer, G&D Trucking/Hoffman Transportation, is a long-time supporter of Folds of Honor, which assists fallen soldiers’ families.

You can always find Jones’ heart pinned firmly to his other sleeve.

Consequently, the devoted husband, father, and driver was no match for the emotions that crashed over him, and threatened to steal his voice, after hearing his name heralded as National Tank Truck Carriers’ 2025-26 Professional Tank Truck Driver of the

Year on Tuesday during the 2026 NTTC Annual Conference. “I’m truly honored and humbled,” said Jones, who boasts 3.8 million accident-free miles in 28 years piloting a truck. “Recognition like this means something special because it represents commitment to professionalism, excellence, and most importantly, safety.

“Safety is the backbone of everything we do. Every mile we drive, every load we haul, every decision we make, carries responsibility; not just for ourselves, but for our families, our companies, and everyone sharing the road with us, so being recognized for that commitment is something I will always cherish.

“I’m proud to be part of this industry—where safety isn’t a goal, it’s a way of life.”

Jones emerged as the Grand Champion in his second consecutive year as one of eight finalists after convincing a panel of judges in January

in Arlington, Virginia, he was the right person to serve as the tank truck industry’s ambassador for the next year. Jones, who has over 1 million accident-free miles in eight years as a chemical and dry bulk specialist with G&D/ Hoffman, also won the Illinois Trucking Association’s Driver of the Year award in 2024; and was one of two recipients of the TravelCenters of America’s 2026 Citizen Driver awards in April.

“He’s such a deserving recipient,” Kevin Hoffman, G&D/Hoffman president, told Bulk Transporter. “He’s a great person, and he has an important story to tell. He’s a veteran, he has overcome personal tragedy, and taken all those things into the hours it takes to be a professional tank truck driver.

“I’m just so proud of him.”

Jones is now the third G&D/Hoffman driver to hoist the William A. Usher Sr. trophy, following Ron Baird in 202021 and Kenneth Tolliver in 2022-23.

No other company has more than one NTTC Driver of the Year in the award’s 13-year history. “All three of them are great people, but every great person has a special trait, and for Bruce it’s his sincerity when you meet him, and his passion for helping others. When you can take people into combat and bring them out alive—and always set such a high standard in your life—that is truly exceptional.”

G&D/Hoffman is exceptional, too.

In addition to three Usher winners, the Channahon, Illinois-based bulk hauler claimed NTTC’s North American safety championship for a third time in seven years in 2024.

“It’s unbelievable—but we’re just getting started,” COO Jerry Curl grinned.

Jones passion started with his father, who also drove a truck. But Jones spent 10 years with the Marines as a drill instructor and military combat trainer before finding his second calling and following in his father’s footsteps. He’s now a driver trainer, member of G&D/ Hoffman’s driver advisory board, and avid “Trucker Buddy.” And he still finds time to stay active in veterans’ organizations and his local community—though

he and wife Tammy have seven children and 10 grandchildren.

“When you picture the ultimate professional, Bruce Jones isn’t just a good example, he’s the example,” said Ryan Streblow, NTTC president and CEO. “His work requires attention, focus, and a deep respect for safety, and Bruce delivers on that every single day. And long before he was hauling tankers, Bruce was serving his country. … And if there’s one thing we know about Marines, it’s that they will bring discipline, toughness, and a commitment to excellence into everything they do.

Bruce is no exception.

“Those values didn’t stay in the military.”

Jones donned his new championship jacket with help from Grammer Logistics’ Mark Schroyer, the 2024-25 Driver of the Year, then thanked NTTC staff, G&D/Hoffman leaders, and his wife from the podium. “She’s been my rock through everything—all the long hours, early mornings, late nights, and time away from home,” Jones said through tears. “She’s always there with strength, encouragement, and unwavering support.”

The newly crowned Grand Champion also had the support of Usher Transport’s Dave Powell, the 2023-24 winner, and Illinois Sen. Sue Rezin, who both wrote letters of recommendation. Rezin said Jones’ influence extends “far beyond the June 2026 | BulkTransporter.com 23

road” and praised his ability to transform pain into purpose. “Five years ago, he tragically lost his son to suicide,” Rezin shared. “Since then, Bruce has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about mental health and advocate for suicide prevention, ensuring no other family has to endure the pain he experienced.”

NTTC’s Usher trophy annually goes to the driver who best demonstrates knowledge of the trucking industry, dedication to safety, ability to communicate the industry’s messages, and overall safe driving record. This year’s panel of judges included Rebecca Brewster, American Transportation Research Institute president and COO; Dan Horvath, American Trucking Associations senior vice president of regulatory affairs and safety policy; America’s Road Team Captains Ben Atkinson and Lloyd Howell, and Jason McDaniel, Bulk Transporter editor.

Bruce Jones should probably make a run to Vegas. The G&D

Trucking/Hoffman Transportation driver placed first in the combined antique combo and custom class (with co-worker Ron Baird’s 2000 Peterbilt 379 tractor and a Mac trailer) at the MidAmerica Trucking Show in March and earned a Citizen Driver award from TravelCenters of America in April—the same month he also clinched 2025-26 National Tank Truck Carriers Tank Truck Driver of the Year as the third G&D/Hoffman driver to secure the prestigious honor. And while it’s hard to compare, Citizen Driver might be the most meaningful.

“My wife nominated me for that,” Jones said. “And the feeling of having Tammy write up something about my career, and the man I am, was special because it was really something she did—not me or the company.”

Clearly, Jones’ life is charmed now.

But he wasn’t always so lucky. The diehard Marine accepted a medical discharge after an injury in Desert Storm forced him behind a desk; and soon after leaving he moved to Illinois to help his father, Jim, battle throat cancer. Then he

and Tammy endured the unimaginable in 2021, losing their son Cody to suicide at 26 years old. But Jones has always excelled at turning pain into purpose.

He obtained his CDL—and rediscovered his trucking passion—in Illinois and became a staunch advocate for suicide prevention.

Now he’s looking to pay forward his newfound good fortune.

“I want to be a mentor,” Jones shared.

“I want to take the positives from my job, and my life, and help others get to

this point, especially the next generation. And being 57, I would love to see a 27- or 30-year-old driver crowned NTTC Grand Champion because they, too, did what they were supposed to do— and did it right.” Before beginning his tenure as NTTC’s industry ambassador, the dry bulk hauler sat down with Bulk Transporter to talk about his past life in the 2nd Force Reconnaissance Company, dealing with grief by staying focused, the power of family—and the heartfelt emotions they inspire—and more.

Questions and answers are edited for length and clarity.

Bulk Transporter: What does NTTC Driver of the Year mean to you?

Bruce Jones: “Following all the amazing drivers who came before me, I’ve got some big shoes to fill. But having the company support we enjoy at G&D/ Hoffman is absolutely overwhelming.

And then being able to create a network through NTTC has been amazing. It’s great to see this side of trucking, and June 2026 | BulkTransporter.com 25

BT: You’ve won several awards in your career. Where does this one rank?

Jones: “It is way up there. I’m not going to lie. Especially with me, and our company, doing a threepeat in a short amount of time. G&D/Hoffman strives to produce champions. And it’s not just the company, it’s the people we have, and the training and the focus, and it’s contagious. You want to be part of that and help the company achieve its goals. And I’ve gotten so much help from [previous winners] Ron Baird, Ken Tolliver, and Dave Powell, and having that backing going into this was amazing.”

BT: How hard was it for you to maintain your composure after hearing your name announced as Grand Champion on stage?

Jones: “I thought for sure I wouldn’t be able to do it. I was in the Marines for 10½ years, so I’m supposed to have a bold look, but as I’ve gotten older, with the stuff my family has been through, including the loss of our son, I really do wear my heart on my sleeve now. And when I heard my name, I looked up and saw my wife’s face, and that was it. I lost it. But it was heartfelt. I’m not trying to be something I’m not, so I wasn’t afraid to ball like a baby in front of all those people. That’s me. Then I heard people’s responses, and they were congratulating me and saying my speech touched them.”

BT: Is suicide prevention something you plan to emphasize during your time as NTTC’s ambassador?

Jones: “Yes. My wife and I strive to make that our mission. I can’t tell you how strong Tammy is. She lost her brother to suicide. We lost our son to suicide.

She also lost her nephew in a tragic car wreck, and all those things happened in the first week of December over the years, so that week is tough. But she is always striving for excellence, putting together suicide walks, and being there for people, which is amazing. People call us when they are having a tough time, because we always have a shoulder to lean on, and we’ve been through it. You take a negative, turn it into a positive, and turn that positive into excellence.

“Here’s a story that will make you freak out. When we tried to check into our room on Sunday, they said, ‘Mr. Jones, your room isn’t ready, but we have another one for you.’ So we hauled everything up to that room, and the number was 2126. Cody, our son, was 26 years old when he died in ’21.

“We looked at each other, and Tammy said, ‘You won. Our son is here.’”

BT: What’s the most difficult part of your job?

Jones: “Being away from home all week, especially as I get older. Having a young child at my age, I miss my home. But the best part of my job is being able to support my family and give them the life they live. So I’m going to take this role,

and this positive outlook, and create a bigger positive to pass on, and hopefully give it to the next eight finalists.

I’m looking forward to going back to Arlington, getting in front of them, and helping them crack the code.”

BT: Your dad was also a truck driver. How much did that influence your decision to transition into trucking?

Jones: “Before I went into the military, I used to go with him on runs. My dad hauled swinging meat in a reefer back in the day, and I remember riding with him as we went by the Goodyear Blimp hangar in Texas, and we saw it pull out while we were driving by. And I remember thinking, ‘Man, I can see all kinds of cool stuff driving a truck,’ and that’s where it all started. And while I was in the Marine Corps, they gave me a license, so I could drive everything.

We drove the big ‘Dragon Wagons,’ and used them to load and unload maritime prepositioning ships. So my fascination with heavy equipment and trucks came from that—because it was so cool.”

BT: Do you see yourself doing this as long as Ron Baird, who was 76 when he won Driver of the Year in 2021?

Jones: “I would like to, but I don’t think Tammy will let me. She’s ready to retire.

And we like the whole Florida thing, so we’ll probably become the old snow birds who go down to Florida. And I really like to cook, so I’ll probably end up with a food truck or smoking barbecue.” BT

Grammer’s specialized 3PL subsidiary is stabilizing the bulk supply chain amid a shifting market

The trucking industry is finally recovering. The demand upticks are still sporadic across freight sectors, but capacity is tightening with carrier and driver exits and new regulatory constraints, rates are steadily increasing, and load boards are filling up—all welcome news for beleaguered bulk haulers.

Even better, the sector they serve is among the fortunate ones.

“Our freight business was up 17% in the first three months this year, compared to the second half of 2025, and everybody is feeling it,” said Heston Hodges, president and CEO of LMR, a bulk logistics specialist based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. “Volumes are going up, shipper networks are stressed, carrier lead times are growing, and we are seeing a total rate update.

“Carriers haven’t been able to ask for increases for three years—but they’re making headway.”

LMR, which manages more than $100 million in bulk cargoes annually, is uniquely positioned to help both producers and fleet operators adapt to evolving conditions, Heston asserted. Founded in 1981 by Terry Hodges, Heston’s father, LMR focused on liquid chemicals from the beginning, so it holds deep-rooted

which includes 400 tractors and over 700 trailers, to create a one-stop-shop supplier of bulk supply chain services that is primed for a long-awaited recovery.

“Grammer has always been strong in the ammonia and NGL spaces, but we’ve pushed hard on specialty chemicals, and we have grown in that area,” said Jeff Bullard, a logistics veteran who came out of retirement last fall to lead the Stellex and Mill Rock-owned company.

“And that market, specifically, is ripe for us to apply the combined Grammer-LMR portfolio. So, we’re actively pursuing new business and having success.

“This will be LMR’s best year since joinJeff Bullard ing Grammer.”

expertise and industry relationships; Terry previously ran a tank fleet, so the company understands and cares about its carrier partners; and, as part of Grammer Logistics since 2022, LMR can access the additional capacity shippers desperately require. “Without one or the other, we’re nowhere,” Heston said. “We provide a service, but the trucking companies must do what they do for us to matter. So, it’s always been about building connections and really accommodating carriers.

“We don’t treat them like a commodity.”

Now, Grammer’s new chief executive officer is intent on bolstering the combined operation’s position in the bulk sector by accelerating the integration of LMR’s third-party logistics capabilities, including managed transportation and freight brokering, with Grammer’s assetbacked truck and transloading business,

LMR, an acronym for Logistics Management Resources, started out as U.S. Comex, or CTX, which stood for Commodity Exchange and Committed to Excellence. The company obtained the first active brokerage license (third overall) from the old Interstate Commerce Commission in support of Uniroyal. Terry formed LMR in the 1990s—when he started working with Dupont and Dow, sold his 50-truck fleet to Schneider, and became the first 3PL in the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care Partner program— and eventually moved all his customers to the new logistics entity. “LMR’s team is unique,” Bullard emphasized. “They’ve been in this world for decades, and they focus on only one area.

“So, regardless of what the market does, we can help navigate it—and do so with reduced volatility and expense.”

LMR today serves hazardous-materials shippers and mid-sized bulk carriers with a dedicated team of 50 employees at offices in Louisiana and Michigan, and customer sites across the country. LMR oversees carrier compliance, capacity forecasting, rate negotiations, order tendering, and invoicing for shippers; assists carrier partners with insurance June 2026 | BulkTransporter.com 27

“We fill a unique role in the supply chain, so we understand both shipper and carrier viewpoints—and we consider both our customers,” Heston emphasized.

Working with LMR, carriers can “build a book of business” with leading chemical manufacturers; and shippers can access multimodal transport options, and a highly tailored transportation management system developed in house and easily customized for individual applications using EDI connections and system integrations with multiple platforms. “LMR’s experience level in bulk liquids transportation is second to none,” Grammer CCO Patrick Maher said. “That lends itself to keeping issues in house vs. passing them back to the customer. Carrier partners also value a hands-on approach and being able to speak directly with people. While simple, these things increase service levels and decrease unnecessary costs.”

Synergy in motion The integration of Grammer and LMR already is unlocking synergistic benefits for both businesses and their mutual customers. LMR expanded its capacity to handle ammonia and industrial gases, and its understanding of carrier pain points; and Grammer expedited its transition into a highly diversified provider of supply chain solutions by adding more specialty chemical services.

Bullard is committed to completing the transformation.

With a background in freight management and complex supply chain coordination at General Motors and Penske, the logistics veteran brings a new asset-light perspective to a truckbased enterprise. “We see LMR’s skillset as an under-leveraged proficiency,” said Bullard, who was lured out of retirement by the challenge, the timing, and the family values instilled by Shorty Whittington, who founded the company in 1968 in Grammer, Indiana. “I spent a lot of time in strategic consulting, and

supply chain strategy specifically, and they want to look at the challenges the market is throwing at us differently. So, my experience lined up with what ownership felt was needed at this point in the company’s growth trajectory.”

By fully embracing and incorporating LMR’s abilities, Grammer can attack logistics problems historically outside its purview, Bullard said. He also brings a fresh take on pricing, and how to leverage modern technologies like AI to augment supply chain efficiency, Heston shared. “Grammer is a legacy trucking company, so it many ways that’s how we still operated.

“Jeff has a much different view of logistics management. He understands that having assets in-house is a real advantage for LMR’s clients, especially as capacity tightens. So, we run separate platforms—but we can leverage each other’s strengths. It’s a win-win.”

Primed for recovery The company’s efforts over the last six months are well-timed, too.

As capacity is tightening and freight rates are rising, truck tonnage also is increasing, posting the largest yearover-year gain in nearly four years in February, according to an FTR report.

That combination has shippers wondering what’s next—and scrambling to strengthen “right-sized” networks, Heston maintained. “Grammer has a

strong geographic footprint, driver base, and equipment profile,” Maher added.

“However, customers continue to ask for our assistance in areas or products that may not be in our core offering, and LMR is allowing us to provide a capacity solution in cases where we had to say no previously.

“That’s really starting to take shape, especially with capacity tightening to begin the year. And, as we look at the near term, there are several opportunities for Grammer to introduce LMR’s managed services to customers as a strategic path to optimizing their supply chains.”

Grammer’s volumes rose year-overyear in the first quarter, Bullard said, giving him confidence the market is “coming back.” Heston is cautiously optimistic the upturn isn’t simply a seasonal surge—and certain rates will stay “inflationary,” which he says is good for all stakeholders. “It’s going to foster a healthier environment,” Heston insisted. “We’ve seen trucking capacity exit the market for a variety of reasons, including the financial wherewithal of a carrier base that’s been squeezed by rising operating costs and falling freight rates, leaving them unable to reinvest in their businesses, and that’s bad for everyone.”

Show me THE MONEY Understanding where AI delivers real value and where it falls short in tank truck operations By Hans Galland Tank truck fleets operate under different rules than most trucking operations. Equipment is specialized, and commodities must be handled correctly to avoid contamination. Dispatch decisions depend on tank compatibility, wash requirements, driver qualifications, and customer production schedules. In many fleets, those decisions still rely heavily on experienced dispatchers who understand how all these factors come together.

Risks for bulk transporters are focused in a few areas: specialized, underutilized equipment; labor-intensive operations; and errors in compatibility, compliance, or scheduling—all areas still heavily reliant on experienced dispatchers.

As artificial intelligence gains attention across the industry, bulk operators are asking a practical question: Where does it actually help?

Focus on the operational problems In bulk transportation, most inefficiencies stem from dayto-day business challenges. Dispatch planning is complex and time-consuming; equipment is often underutilized; and

manual billing and compliance processes increase delays and the potential for errors.

These are not new problems, but they are areas where technology is able to make a measurable difference when applied correctly.

One reason these problems persist is that many fleet systems were designed as systems of record. They capture what has happened (such as loads, miles, and invoices). But systems of record do little to help teams decide what should happen next.

AI delivers more value when it is applied within systems of action. Tools that support immediate decision-making inside dispatch workflows, where operational choices are made, yield the greatest benefits of AI.

Where AI delivers value Fleets are beginning to see value from AI and automation in a few specific areas, particularly when they are embedded directly into business processes. These include: • Dispatch planning: Planning loads for bulk operations requires managing multiple constraints at once. Systems of action that incorporate compatibility, availability, and timing into dispatch workflows can help planners evaluate options in real time and make faster, more consistent decisions, often saving dispatchers several hours per week.

• Error prevention: Pairing the wrong equipment with a load or missing a compliance step may result in substantial costs and risks. When validation happens inside the dispatch workflow, not after the fact, fleets can prevent errors before they occur.

INDUSTRY INSIGHT ■ Technology and document management cuts manual effort and improves accuracy, which helps fleets move more quickly from delivery to payment. When these processes are connected to critical data, they require less rework and fewer corrections.

• Equipment utilization: With significant capital tied up in specialized trailers, underutilization directly affects return on assets. Improving trailer visibility and data helps fleets reduce idle time and improve utilization.

Challenges to realizing AI value Despite the potential, AI initiatives do not always deliver expected results.

One of the largest challenges is data fragmentation.

Operational data is often spread across dispatch systems, telematics platforms, maintenance tools, and financial systems that are not fully integrated. Without reliable, unified data, AI tools struggle to generate useful recommendations.

Decision-making presents another constraint. Dispatchers rely on experience developed over time, which is rarely captured in systems. If AI tools do not incorporate implicit knowledge, they are often ignored or overridden.

In many fleets, AI is applied on top of current workflows rather than within them. Adding intelligence to a segmented or manual process does not resolve the underlying issue. It simply adds one more level of complexity.

Lessons from the field Recent fleet deployments show how fleets are applying AI to solve real business problems. Bulk carrier D.G. Coleman, which transports liquid and dry materials, encountered limitations from manual processes and disconnected systems. Dispatch decisions relied heavily on experience, with limited system support for evaluating current conditions. After digitizing workflows and introducing compatibility across loads, equipment and drivers, the fleet improved decision consistency, reduced errors, and accelerated billing and payroll.

For Odyssey Manufacturing, a chemical distribution fleet, the main challenge was data fragmentation. The data was spread across ERP systems, spreadsheets, and manual processes, creating delays and lower efficiencies. Uniting these systems delivered real-time visibility and allowed operational data to flow directly into decision-making, improving speed and equipment utilization.

In food-grade transport, Clasen Quality Chocolate needed to accurately manage tank washing, preloads, and product compatibility. Embedding these requirements into dispatch workflows improved coordination and reduced the risk of contamination, an area where errors are particularly costly.

These examples reveal a trend in technology adoption. Fleets are moving from systems that primarily record activity to systems that actively support decisions. That shift is where AI becomes practical, because it is applied at the point where work happens.

What fleets should consider Successful implementation depends on more than just the technology itself.

Data integration is critical. Systems must be able to combine information from dispatch, telematics, maintenance, and financial platforms. Without that foundation, even the best tools will struggle to deliver reliable recommendations.

User adoption is equally important. Dispatchers and planners need systems that reflect how they work and support their decision-making process. Tools that operate outside of core workflows are less likely to be used.

Fleets should also take a focused approach. Starting with targeted use cases—such as dispatch planning or workflow automation—allows organizations to build momentum and expand over time.

Moving forward Bulk fleets will adopt AI applications to solve practical and operational problems.

Fleets that focus on improving dispatch, decreasing errors, and increasing utilization will see the greatest benefit. By working with native AI platforms rather than those that layer AI on top of existing systems, they will be better positioned for lasting success. BT

The agreement with MAC includes the manufacturer’s dry bulk trailers and its liquid tankers, which previously ran under the MAC LTT logo. Global will stock MACs for sale and lease, and the orders are already placed, the company said. “We’re proud to partner with Global Tank,” Bill McKenzie, MAC president of sales, told Bulk Transporter. “This partnership strengthens our capabilities and positions us to deliver greater value and exceptional service to our customers.”

Scully Signal upgrades vapor recovery verification Scully Signal Company, which this year is celebrating 90 years of innovation, recently launched the Scully Vapor Connect Kit—a self-proving system designed for monitoring and verifying terminal-to-tank truck vapor hose or loading-arm connection as part of the loading permit.

The new system, which is available now, gives terminal operators the ability to confirm vapor connection before every load, closing a critical gap in environmental protection, operational accountability, and investment security, the company reported.

“Connecting the vapor hose is a crucial part of the loading process after connecting the overfill and grounding plug,” Scully stated in a news release. “Yet unlike grounding and overfill protection, vapor hose connection has historically relied on driver compliance alone in certain regions of the world. When the hose is not properly connected or bypassed entirely, vapors generated during fuel loading escape to the atmosphere rather than flowing to the vapor

recovery system, undermining both regulatory commitments and capital investments in environmental infrastructure.”

The Vapor Connect kit centers on the ST-46, a self-proving controller that can function independently or in tandem with existing Scully overfill and grounding controllers. The ST-46 incorporates vapor verification status as part of the loading permit so that a tank truck cannot receive a loading authorization until a proper vapor connection is confirmed, making verification a mandatory, tamper-resistant part of the loading process, Scully explained.

What sets Vapor Connect apart is its engineered resistance to workarounds or “cheating.” An integrated sensor and wiring are internal to the coupler and hose, and the system uses a proprietary signal that cannot be shorted to simulate a proper connection. For terminal operators who have invested in vapor recovery infrastructure, this technology ensures that investment delivers its intended return.

Key product features include: Maximum vapor capture using closed-system design with a poppet coupler adaptor ■ Trusted system that is difficult to “cheat” due to an integrated sensor and wiring internal to the coupler and hose, plus a proprietary signal that cannot be “shorted” to pass as a proper connection.

■ Provides an electrical output to TAS or batch controller as an option to include in the permit logic.

Efficiency meets flexibility: Paragon launches new blower Paragon Tank Truck Equipment recently launched the P858e pneumatic truck blower, a breakthrough in dry bulk transport technology designed to help fleets unload faster, save fuel, and minimize downtime.

The P858e introduces a new standard of efficiency with an extended RPM range of 600 to 3000, Paragon reported. The blower delivers higher flow at lower speeds for faster offloads and reduced fuel consumption. A special rotor coating minimizes trapped air, improves airflow, and lowers discharge temperatures, reducing the risk of downtime or product damage.

The new blower is available to order now with part number 601020e. Warranty coverage includes 12 months from first use or 18 months from shipment.

Key features and benefits include: ■ Fuel savings: Requires on average 7.1% less horsepower to achieve the same flow rates compared to non-coated blowers.

■ Performance: Up to 1020 CFM maximum flow, continuous pressure up to 20 PSI, and vacuum up to 18 in. Hg. ■ Flexibility: The extended performance range allows operators to run at more ideal flow levels across a wider set of product applications, improving fleet efficiency.

“The P858e allows you to increase the products you are capable of unloading efficiently, requiring less power with shorter unloading times, equating to thousands of dollars in annual savings,” the company stated in a news release.
