headlining provision for tank truck industry stakeholders. National Tank Truck Carriers and American Trucking Associations both back the measure, which would grant haulers of shifting dry bulk products flexibility on axle weights without altering the gross vehicle weight limit for loaded tanks.

But that was only one of many investments and reforms in the five-year, $580 billion surface transportation reauthorization bill, which cleared a key House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee markup by a 62-2 vote May 22, but (when this issue went to press) still needed to pass both chambers of Congress before the current transit program lapses Sept. 30. Fortunately, NTTC leaders went through the 1,000-page bill with a fine-toothed comb, so we don’t have to. “To sum it up, the bill isn’t perfect, but it is overwhelmingly positive in favor of our industry,” Will Lusk, NTTC director of education and government relations, told Bulk Transporter.

NTTC indicated support for 17 sections of the bill, including Section 1302, which amends vehicle weight limits. Other noteworthy provisions NTTC supports include forming a rulemaking committee to evaluate pulsating light systems (Section 4012), extending hazardous materials special permit periods (10604), updating hazardous materials registration fee distinctions for small businesses (10602), creating a workforce development program to support drivers and mechanics (5407), enhancing the DataQs appeals process (5203), and extending the Safe Driver Apprenticeship Program through Sept. 30, 2031.

NTTC opposes changes related to safety placards and hazmat endorsements.

Section 10607 would require “costly” rulemaking for placards designed to survive extreme fire conditions and remain legible during uncontrolled burns, “despite a lack of data-supported evidence demonstrating meaningful safety benefits,” NTTC reported.

And Section 10608 would necessitate a “burdensome” study on commodity-specific hazardous materials endorsements on commercial driver’s licenses, adding “unnecessary complexity for carriers and driver licensing agencies while reducing flexibility for drivers,” NTTC maintained.

The association is “monitoring” terms and conditions for exemptions (5005), oversight for predatory lease-purchase programs (5101), and an exception for intrastate transportation of diesel fuel for logging operations (10610). “NTTC will continue engaging with lawmakers and federal agencies as the BUILD America 250 Act advances through the legislative process and will provide members with additional updates as new developments occur,” NTTC concluded.

A May 20 release from the House T&I committee boasted BUILD America 250 Act endorsements from over 100 organizations—over 100!—including ATA, AGC, CVSA, IFDA, NTTC, OOIDA, SIGMA, TFI, and TCA. That confirms my conviction that there’s a group for absolutely everything under the sun, moon, and stars, on this planet and every other planet. But it also suggests this highway bill enjoys overwhelming support, and Congress must decide on something soon, right?

“Many NTTC members are small businesses, as defined by the Small Business Administration, and play a vital role in supporting American manufacturing, construction, agriculture, and supply chain operations,” Streblow summarized.

“We look forward to working with [Congress] to advance the BUILD America 250 Act.” Still, my breath is unabated.

NTTC leaders were confident they’d secure a dry bulk axle variance before, but those efforts died out. And our divided Congress has difficulty doing anything other than funding itself these days—and even that’s a daunting task. But maybe common sense will finally prevail.

INDUSTRY NEWS KAG, Talke USA earn 2026 Career Catalyst recognition Bulk haulers Kenan Advantage Group and Talke USA recently collected 2026 Career Catalyst Awards from the Next Generation in Trucking Association for making meaningful contributions to developing and supporting the next-gen workforce in the trucking industry.

KAG also earned a Career Catalyst award in last year’s inaugural program.

“We created the Career Catalyst Awards because there are companies across this industry doing incredible work to invest in people, but many of those efforts are not always seen or recognized,” Lindsey Trent, NextGen Trucking president and co-founder, said in a news release. “These awards were designed to spotlight organizations that are building real career pathways, partnering with schools, creating opportunities for young people, and helping position trucking and transportation as a first-choice career field for the next generation workforce.

“We also hope these stories inspire other companies to explore new ways to engage, train, mentor, and invest in the future workforce so we

NextGen Trucking previously celebrated KAG’s apprenticeship program. This year, the North Canton, Ohio-based tank truck carrier was recognized for its focus on developing professional drivers through hands-on training, safety-centered onboarding, and career advancement opportunities designed to support long-term success, the association reported.

Presented in partnership with The National Transportation Institute (NTI) and Engine, the Career Catalyst Awards celebrate companies taking intentional action to strengthen the future workforce through training, mentorship, apprenticeships, school engagement, leadership development, and longterm growth opportunities in trucking and transportation.

“Workforce development is one of the most important conversations happening in trucking today, and the companies being honored through the Career Catalyst Awards are leading by example,” said Leah Shaver, NTI president and CEO.

Arcwood Environmental acquires Safeway Industrial Services Arcwood Environmental recently acquired Safeway, an Alabama-based environmental services business. Safeway operates through two coordinated divisions: Safeway Industrial Services, focused on specialized hazardous and non-hazardous waste transportation, and Safeway Environmental Services, focused on field and environmental services. The acquisition adds to Arcwood’s capabilities and its operational presence across the Southeastern United States.

“We continue to expand the breadth and depth of our field and environmental services platform with the addition of Safeway,” Arcwood CEO HP Nanda said in a news release. “Their expertise in specialized hazardous and non-hazardous waste transportation, combined with strong customer

relationships and an experienced team, strengthens our ability to serve customers nationwide. Just as importantly, we share a commitment to responsiveness and service excellence.”

Safeway employs approximately 60 people and operates a fleet of more than 100 tagged assets, including tankers, roll-offs, end dumps, vacuum trucks, and specialized trailers supporting both transportation and field operations. Safeway provides hazardous and non-hazardous waste hauling, industrial and chemical cleaning, tank cleaning, lab packing, remediation, emergency and spill response, and waste brokerage services.

The entire Safeway team, including management, will join Arcwood’s growing team,

Arcwood said. Safeway operates from three primary locations across Alabama.

“We have long admired and respected Arcwood and its leadership in the environmental services sector,” Safeway CEO Andrew Wood said. “Through this acquisition process, we’ve confirmed that our two companies have similar values: delivering for customers, advancing innovation, leading with safety, and working together as a team. Colonial acquires Atkinson Oil Colonial Oil Industries, a division of Savannah, Georgia-based Colonial Group, recently acquired Atkinson Oil Company, a distributor of fuel and lubricants based in Sandersville, Georgia, in a deal expected to strengthen Colonial Oil’s presence in the Southeast U.S. and expand its ability to deliver essential products in the region.

“Atkinson Oil is a highly respected, relationship-driven business with deep roots in the communities it serves,” said Christian Demere, Colonial Group president and CEO.

“The Sandersville and Macon markets serve as a natural extension of our growth strategy. We are proud to welcome the Atkinson team to the Colonial family and look forward to continuing their legacy of trusted service.”

Operations will continue in Sandersville and Macon, Georgia, with all existing facilities remaining active, Colonial reported.

“Atkinson Oil is pleased to transition its operations to Colonial Oil Industries, a highly respected leader in the fuel and lubricants industry,” Atkinson CEO Clint Hancock said.

“This transition reflects a shared commitment to safety, service excellence, and

The acquisition adds 14 Atkinson team members to Colonial Oil as part of an integration process designed to maintain continuity and support long-term growth.

“Customers and partners of both companies can expect uninterrupted service,” Demere concluded. “The combined organization is focused on maintaining existing relationships and over time, customers will benefit from expanded resources.”

KAG, Schneider Bulk win ACC Responsible Care awards Kenan Advantage Group took home two 2026 Responsible Care and Sustainability Leadership Awards and Dan Wright, KAG vice president of safety and security, earned a Spotlight Award during the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care and Sustainability Conference held April 27-29 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

KAG won TRANSCAER Responsible Care Partner of the Year and one of three Product Safety awards.

“As a company with safety at its core, it’s been an exciting and pride-filled week of recognition for the KAG team,” the company said in a LinkedIn post.

Additionally, Schneider National Bulk was one of four recipients of ACC’s Responsible Care Initiative of the Year award, which recognizes ACC member and Responsible Care Partner companies that have implemented a specific program or activity that demonstrates leadership in employee health and safety, security, or environmental protection.

Chevron Phillips Chemical, a private-fleet Grand Award winner in National Tank Truck Carriers’ North American Safety Contest, also claimed an Initiative of the Year award, along with Arkema and Climax Molybdenum.

ACC’s Responsible Care and Sustainability Leadership Awards spotlight outstanding people, organizations, and initiatives advancing safety and sustainability with vision and innovation.

“America’s chemical manufacturers are the backbone of a competitive U.S. economy,” Chris Jahn, ACC president and CEO, said in a news release. “The companies we’re recognizing demonstrate how Responsible Care strengthens that

foundation—developing essential products while protecting our employees, our communities, and our environment.

“Their leadership is powering a stronger manufacturing sector and reinforcing the vital role chemistry plays in America’s economic success.”

The Responsible Care Partner Company of the Year winners this year are Trinity Industries, Total Quality Logistics, and Material Logistics and Services, a division of WSI. These companies involved in the distribution, transportation, storage, use, treatment, disposal, and/or sales and marketing of chemicals posted “superb performance and safety records” ACC reported.

Chevron Chemical (large company), TotalEnergies Petrochemicals and Refining USA (medium company), and PQ Corporation (small company) are ACC’s 2026 Responsible Care Companies of the Year. These awards recognize members’ outstanding leadership and performance in environmental, health, and safety stewardship and dedication to continual improvement.

INDUSTRY NEWS Quality Carriers reaps rewards for outstanding service Quality Carriers continues to collect awards this year.

The CSX-owned tank truck carrier recently claimed Uber Freight’s 2025 Bulk Carrier of the Year honor, and three Quality Carriers drivers secured P&G Carrier Driver of the Year awards. The latest honors arrive only two months after Quality Carriers won Unilever’s 2025 Bulk Carrier of the Year title.

Uber cited the bulk hauler’s consistent on-time performance and service quality; strong collaboration across pickup, transit, and delivery; adoption of tools that improve visibility and reduce manual work; and its contributions to more efficient and reliable network execution as the key factors in its decision.

“I believe that Quality Carriers is the best fleet in the industry,” Randy Strutz, Quality Carriers president, said in a news release.

“We are committed to our drivers, our customers, and our communities. This award acknowledges the incredible strength of our operations, and I am proud of all of our teammates who make us worthy of this recognition.”

The newly crowned P&G Drivers of the Year are long-time independent contractors Eric Hartman, Hector Martinez, and Olivia Alfarano, who were recognized for their commitment to safety, quality of service, and miles driven for P&G, Quality Carriers reported.

“Our professional drivers are the heart and soul of our company,” Strutz said. “I am pleased that P&G saw fit to recognize Eric, Hector, and Olivia for their exceptional efforts. The work they do for

P&G is remarkable, and I am proud to have them on our team.”

Nicholas Ceffalia, Quality Carriers’ T-173 terminal manager, called Hartman a “pro’s pro.”

“In an industry where variables constantly change, Eric provides a rare level of reliability, evidenced by his perfect 100% on-time delivery rate for P&G this past year,” Ceffalia said. “But his impact on my team goes far beyond the metrics. As a fleet owner, Eric leads by example, often stepping up to mentor other drivers on complex technical issues. He doesn’t just deliver loads; he elevates the standard of our entire fleet.”

TaraAnn Goodney, a driver operations specialist at Quality Carriers’ T-139 location, said Martinez is a “true example” of a professional driver who takes pride in representing the company well. “Hector is always willing to lend a hand, often assisting fellow drivers with guidance and sharing valuable tips for other drivers going to P&G plants and customer locations,” Goodney said. “His easy-going nature, strong work ethic, and positive attitude make him a respected and trusted teammate. Over the past four years, it has been a pleasure to work alongside him.”

Joshua Albert, T-158 terminal manager, called Alfarano a “phenomenal” team player.

“She is an extremely dependable driver, but more importantly, she is a phenomenal person,” Albert stated. “She has a great work ethic and can always be trusted to get the job done.

“I’m grateful to have her on our team.”

Dry bulk axle variance makes newly unveiled $580B highway bill The BUILD America 250 Act, a five-year, $580 billion surface transportation reauthorization bill, includes language that would allow a 10% axle weight variance for haulers of shifting dry bulk materials—a long-time National Tank Truck Carriers priority.

The provision would enable a variance by increasing the maximum weight allowed on either axle in a tandem-axle trailer to 37,400 lbs., while maintaining the current federal gross vehicle weight limit of 80,000 lbs. NTTC called the measure a “common-sense” solution that reflects the operational realities of transporting dry bulk commodities like feed, grains, and sand, improving operational flexibility for carriers while reducing unnecessary overweight citations.

“The inclusion of dry bulk axle variance language in this legislation is an important step forward for the tank truck industry,” NTTC President and CEO Ryan Streblow said. “This targeted fix recognizes the unique characteristics of dry bulk transportation and provides practical flexibility for carriers while maintaining the existing federal gross vehicle weight limit.”

American Trucking Associations echoed NTTC’s assessment of the inclusion of the bipartisan VARIANCE Act, which Sens. Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.) and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) first unveiled last summer, calling it a common-sense approach that accounts for load distribution changes when a vehicle brakes or accelerates. The measure now is part of Section 1302 of the 1,000-page BUILD America 250 Act, which also amends weight limits for emergency, heavyduty tow and recovery, and hydrogen vehicles.

A dynamic father-daughter duo is keeping bulk haulers on the road in a key chemical market. by Jason McDaniel

G

reg Ballard always wanted to wield a welding torch. So his first job was with Slade’s Industrial Services in 1980, when he was still a sophomore in high school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. But his parents, who dreamed of seeing their son attend medical school, weren’t thrilled with his selection. “My dad and the guy who hired me were buddies, so they tried to work me to the point where I would hate manual labor, and I’d quit and go to college,” Greg recalled.

“But it just wasn’t happening.”

Nearly 40 years later, he took a similarly gruff approach with his daughter, Ashton, when she decided to join the tank trailer maintenance and repair business he founded in 2015 in nearby St. Gabriel, insisting she work her way up from the shop floor, understand cargo tank anatomy inside and out, and go to industry events and workshops on her own. And as it turns out, she’s as passionate about the work as her old man.

“I’m behind her, and if I see she’s struggling with something, I give her a little

nudge,” said Greg, 62, who now serves as president. “I’m there to make sure she understands all aspects of the business.

And I’m not saying she doesn’t call and ask questions. It’s not 100%. But it’s a good 80%—and I’ll take 80%. Some of my competitors have been in the business much longer than her and still can’t do what she does.

“You’ve got to have the will and want to, and she definitely has that drive.”

relationships and Ashton’s energy and enthusiasm to transform the small operation into an essential provider of cargo tank services in a region that’s teeming with chemical manufacturers and haulers. “I grew up around up it, but I always thought, ‘I’m never getting involved in this.’ I didn’t want any part of it,” Ashton recalled. “And then about nine years ago, I was looking for a change, and he asked me to come help, so I jumped aboard.

“We’ve grown and grown the company ever since then.”

Now LBS is eyeing a milestone expansion into MC-331 services—and filling a critical role for leading tank truck carriers.

Rooted in tank repair Greg spent nine years with Slade’s and a local competitor after studying welding at ITI Technical College. And he was the first person Penske Corp. hired in 1989 to help establish Penske Tank in Baton Rouge, where he worked in the same facility through two name changes— first Pentron and then Polar Service Center, which later relocated to Port Allen, Louisiana.

He stayed with PSC until 2014—when he decided a change was in order.

“A friend from Polar, who was the director of maintenance for Service Transport at the time, said ‘Why don’t you go into business for yourself? I’ll give you everything I’ve got,’ and I thought, ‘Why not?’ So that’s how I got started. I went to the bank with a briefcase, and a folder with a business plan, told them I needed ‘x’ amount of money, they gave it to me, and here we are now.”

After 37 years serving the tank trailer industry—and 46 years overall—Greg is still the person in the front row at inspection workshops, absorbing as much information as he can, and hoping to pass on all he knows to the next generation, including his little girl. “Greg’s been in the industry a long time,” said Josh Noworatzky, Sprint Transport president and CEO. “He knows what he’s doing, and more importantly, what not to do.

Sometimes, especially in our industry, the key is understanding what not to do, whether it’s in repairs, regulations, or anything else.

“And Ashton has done a great job of learning from her dad, as well as continuing to get more education, and

making sure that she knows not only the historical way things have been done, but also that she’s very in touch with new processes, procedures, and technologies.”

Passing the torch Greg initially was reluctant to bring Ashton on. After witnessing her ascent to highly capable vice president, he’s thoroughly convinced LBS is in good hands going forward. And Ashton, now a DOT-certified HM-183 inspector and the last word on LBS tank repairs, credits her

industry success to the three years spent in the shop—which she still considers a refuge from often-hectic office life.

“You see what these guys go through, and learn some jobs aren’t as easy as we may think,” Ashton said. “Until you’re the one doing the job, you don’t realize what it takes to fit everything together just right. That really made me appreciate our guys.”

Ashton inherited Greg’s thirst for knowledge, too. She studies the “regs” religiously, frequents new classes, and utilizes services like Sentry Road and

“She’s become a go-to source on regulatory issues.”

Ashton’s also committed to maintaining a family-oriented environment. She’s always willing to track down an elusive answer, or even watch a desperate driver’s dog, and her 10-year-old daughter, Hope, is a regular visitor to the shop— where she’s already starting to show interest.

“We’re always willing to go the extra mile,” Ashton confirmed.

‘Extra-mile’ express care With three bays for maintenance and repairs and external positions for inspections, testing, and light work, LBS can handle up to eight trailers at once. And due to its growing reputation for consistently providing quality repairs big and small—and responsive, safety-focused service—they stay busy, turning out 30-plus tanks per month from a 2-acre location on Hwy. 30, where Sprint, Service Transport, Andrews Logistics, Dana Transport, Groendyke Transport, Heniff Transportation

Systems, and Quality Carriers all have nearby terminals.

“Louisiana is a unique market,” Ashton said. “Here, we do business with people—not companies—and after 30-plus years in the industry, dad knows everyone.”

Chemical tank trailers, primarily stainless-steel DOT 407s, account for 95% of LBS’s business, so the R-stamp shop’s most common heavy repairs involve jacket damage, staining, and pitting—from which Greg says no tanker is immune, whether it’s made of 316L, 2205 lean duplex, or even composites. “They’ve tried over the years to improve the alloys for better corrosion resistance, but nothing is bulletproof,” he said. “There are chemicals that will eat through anything. So pitting is still a big issue, and there isn’t a lot of tolerance for it because the barrels aren’t that thick to begin with. So anytime we see pitting, we weld them up, polish them off, and hydro the tank, because one pit is going to turn into a hundred.”

“Express” work, like repairing fenders, ladders, landing gear, and walkways, is the company’s most popular service, Greg said. They can turn around small jobs faster than big shops, keeping trailers on the road; and pull-up customers with leaky valves or blocked vents are always welcome. “I see more cosmetic issues today than I’ve ever seen in my

life,” Greg said. “And a lot of it is just carelessness in parking lots or plants, like forgetting to lock the kingpin.”

LBT also can work inside local plants, where most carriers aren’t authorized to repair trailers; and “extra-mile” services include helping new carriers set up in the area, painting frames and suspensions—for external corrosion resistance—cleaning hangers, and greasing bearings.

Essential service, shared success Sprint started its St. Gabriel terminal one year before LBS opened its doors, and the support LBS provides has been “instrumental” in Sprint’s growth to 90 trucks serving the region, Noworatzky said. LBS doesn’t “nickel and dime” customers on quotes, repairs are done right, and always on time, and that reliability allows Sprint to reserve its shop for trailer preps.

“In over a decade of experience, I’ve never sent anything back,” Noworatzky said.

The company’s expertise even includes liner repairs and consultations. LBS recently identified an issue with one of Sprint’s lined tankers with help from Logan Ballard, Greg’s son, a facility manager with Sherwin-Williams who also is a certified coating inspector.

“We’d already been dealing with it for six months,” Noworatzky said. “With Ashton’s help, I tracked down answer in six weeks.

“That was extremely helpful—and probably saved me a lot of money.”

In turn, Sprint is happy to push LBS customers’ trailers to the front of the line at its Trident Tank Wash facility, a convenience Greg and Ashton appreciate greatly. In more than 11 years in business, LBS has a spotless OSHA record,

and they intend to keep it that way, so the company maintains strict policies on what it will and won’t work on, and dirty tank trailers top the list.

“It takes a village for this whole industry to work,” Noworatzky said. “It’s not about one customer, one vendor, or one hauler. We must work together to ensure everything is done correctly. We all want our equipment to be held to the highest standard, and we want to be safe, because our families drive up and down the road every day. So, we need the right people fixing it—the ones we know will do it right and refuse to put something on the road that’s unsafe.”

them—are at the heart of LBS’s success. That’s why it’s gone from startup to essential service provider, nearly “quadrupling” business since 2015, Greg estimated, and why it’s aiming to expand at the request of customers. “I don’t ever want to be complacent,” he emphasized.

“So, I’m always pushing myself, trying harder, and doing more.”

The goal now is to begin servicing liquefied petroleum (LP) tankers.

LBS already is certified to do the work in Louisiana. The next steps are securing Texas Railroad Commission certification—since so many trailers travel between the two states—and finding a suitable location to house 331s, which don’t fit as easily in the company’s current facility.

“We’re working on another shop now,” Ashton shared. “Hopefully, in the next year or so, we’ll get that going.”

And LBS customers plan to keep them plenty busy in the meantime.

“LBS has been an outstanding partner for us,” Vineyard concluded. “When we’re in a bind, they’ve consistently stepped up and adjusted to meet our needs, often on short notice. The quality of their repair and maintenance work has been excellent, but just as important is how they approach the relationship. They treat us like extended family—staying in touch, checking in proactively, and going the extra mile to support our team.

Springfield, Missouri, is a hotbed for innovation in heavy-duty truck and trailer suspensions. Reyco Granning Suspensions grew out of Reynolds Manufacturing, which started in 1924 in Springfield; C. Ted Hutchens founded Hutchens Industries there 26 years later; and John Raidel Sr. left Reyco to open Ridewell Suspensions in the “Birthplace of Route 66” in 1967.

All three are still operating today.

Only one zeroed in on specialized trailers at the outset.

“We focus on supplying air ride suspensions for the vocational segment,” said Justin Cravens, Ridewell president.

“So we don’t go after the biggest trailer manufacturers in North America, the guys who build the dry vans, reefers, high-volume flatbeds, and chassis trailers. We focus on the 50,000-70,000 specialized trailers built every year—and tank is a key part of that.”

Heading into its 60th-anniversary year as a third-generation, family-owned company, Ridewell continues to hold its own—even while competing against much larger suspension manufacturers—producing steady, incremental growth amid challenging market conditions by emphasizing performance and durability, parts availability, and “oldschool” engagement. “We like to say we don’t participate in downturns,” Cravens said. “A lot of times, when business is slow, big companies cut their workforce

and trim expenses. We do the opposite.

We increase our marketing budget, encourage our guys to travel more, and cater to customers heavier.”

“That’s when Ridewell really goes hot.”

To prepare for the next trucking upturn, which has shown sporadic signs of finally materializing, Ridewell also is reinvesting in the business—expanding factory automation, honing production processes, and strengthening relationships with leading service providers, dealers, and OEMs like STE—another family-owned company laser-focused on tanks. “Our partnership with Ridewell has been a cornerstone of STE’s growth and success,” said Chris Sipe, STE president. “Their unwavering dedication to the tank trailer market is matched only by their execution.

backed by a powerhouse, industry-leading warranty that gives both us and our customers total peace of mind.”

Radically reliable leadership John Sr. was the head of engineering at Reyco in the 1960s. He left to focus on building air ride suspensions—then considered a “radical” technology that made little sense. Today, air ride systems account for over 75% of the suspensions on heavy-duty trailers. “I was at Hutchens Industries in the early 90s, when air ride first started picking up steam, and we still thought people were crazy for spending that much money on a trailer suspension, and adding that much weight,” said Darin Bridges, Ridewell vice president of sales and marketing.

“But you look at the market today, and most of it has gone air ride.”

John Raidell II, who understood both the technical and financial sides of the business, slowly grew Ridewell during his reign; and the family groomed Jack Raidel, current owner and CEO, to lead from Day 1, Bridges said. “The old adage is: first generation starts it, second grows it, and third spends it,” he said. “Jack is not keeping the profits for himself. He’s investing in the company, with a lot of automation, and he takes as much pride in it as his granddad did.”

John was a hands-on instructor, so he insisted Jack learn the mechanical aspects of the business early on. Instead of watching TV, he was rebuilding carburetors or trying to figure out how to use a

hand file to turn a square piece of metal into a perfect circle. “I’ve been instilled with the responsibility to continue my grandfather’s legacy—and I am happy to do so,” Raidel shared.

“I’m passionate about it, so that’s all I want to do.”

Ridewell today employs 170 people at two locations: the main 200,000-sq.-ft. manufacturing facility and headquarters in Springfield and a 45,000-sq.-ft. secondary facility nearby that builds auxiliary suspensions. The company maintains a highly diversified client base, with over 800 OEM, dealer, and shop customers serving the tank, dump, and heavy-haul trailer industries—and leaders hold on tightly to the old-school values John Sr. instilled decades ago.

“Our customers base is loyal to us, and we’re loyal to them, we pay our employees well, and we treat our suppliers like family,” Cravens summarized.

That’s why people tend to stick with Ridewell. Cravens is in his 26th year at the company, and John McNellis, VP

of operations, is in his 27th. “I’ve had opportunities to leave over the years, but the family atmosphere kept me here,” McNellis shared. “Over and over, I’ve watched the Raidel family stand behind everything they do.

“Even when they don’t have to, they always step up and take care of customers and employees.”

‘Over-engineered’ for excellence With a culture that emphasizes smallfleet responsiveness and shared success, the company’s people sell Ridewell as much as its products, Bridges said. But the products are premium, too, delivering elite driver comfort, load security, and dependable durability compared to traditional dry van leaf spring suspensions. And, as an early air ride innovator, Ridewell holds over 70 patents related to the technology, covering everything from the stress-reducing axle connections in the RAR-240 line to the clamped-in pivot bushings in most of its systems.

“We’re not just trying to make a sale,” McNellis said. “If our customers are successful, then we’re successful.”

Mechanically, air ride suspensions are fairly simple. They consist of hangers, beams, air bags, and shocks. The difference is in the details, including component materials, production and assembly processes, and application customization. And Ridewell continues to iterate, modifying and adapting designs in response to regulatory changes, lightweighting initiatives, and emissions considerations; and developing new systems, like axle-less suspensions.

That’s why the 59-year-old company now carries over 50,000 unique SKUs. “Our suspensions are over-engineered for safety and serviceability,” McNellis stated. “We’re well-versed in the rougher environments our equipment operates in, so it’s made to withstand extreme situations, curbing events, and overloads; the ‘wearable’ parts are designed to last a long time and be easy to replace; and we do live builds of prototypes and thoroughly test every new product before it’s ever allowed to go out in the field with a customer.”

The company implemented a multitiered method for procurement post-pandemic. Material and component suppliers are ranked and regularly reevaluated based on pricing, performance, and lead times. Most items are sourced domestically. Some critical components—like the U.K.-made bushings used in a suspension Ridewell unveiled in 1977—still come from outside the U.S., but McNellis is seeing some “near-shoring.” “One of our key bushing suppliers is opening a new facility in the U.S. in August,” he said.

Production is prioritized by “focus-factory” objectives. The blue team handles higher-volume products; the gray team manages the fabrication

line, where raw materials are transformed; the red team oversees truck-side and low-volume suspension operations, and the green team assembles complete axle systems, which now account for 30% of Ridewell suspensions. “By organizing production that way, we can take the higher variability we have and narrow it down to certain product lines within our overall production floor,” McNellis explained.

Advanced technology is optimizing Ridewell production capacity, consistency, and efficiency. Factory floors now feature approximately 30 automated systems, including robotic cells, material-handling machines, and powered lines. Combined with 100 highly skilled manufacturing and warehouse employees, the company has doubled throughput over the last five years—and recently increased overall equipment efficiency (OEE) to an exceptional 87%.

“The Raidel family’s willingness to invest in new equipment, tools, and anything else we need to be more efficient, never ceases to amaze me,” McNellis said.

Ridewell stocks its most popular models, helping suppress leads times to under five weeks over the last 18 months.

Bulk Tank Inc. (BTI) CEO David Sisk started his career in the tank trailer industry as a mechanic working on Schwerman Trucking’s pneumatic dry bulkers in 1970. And that early experience informed every innovation to which Sisk—whose name is associated with dozens of tanker equipment patents—contributed over the last 56 years, from Easy-Open hopper tees and Never-Seize manhole adjusters to BTI’s signature BlackMaxx composite fiber butterfly valves.

“We’re always listening,” Sisk said.

“You’ve got to listen to the people in this industry, especially the drivers and mechanics. They’re the ones out there doing it, climbing under trailers, fixing this, fiddling with that, so they understand the problems, and we just want to make their lives easier.

of the complete, easily maintained system, which includes AutoClean and AutoWeigh technology. “It’s so much easier to use than a regular vac tank,” said Jeff Arledge, J&M vice president of maintenance. “With a regular vac tank, the filter tubes will crack. AutoLoad tubes hold up far better. I think we’ve replaced one [in four years of service], and it’s easier to pull them out.

“You can tell BTI’s guys aim to build products that are mechanic-friendly.”

Genius in motion Since Sisk founded the manufacturer—which specializes in pneumatic tank trailer equipment—in Park Hills, Missouri, in 1992, BTI has prioritized helping customers maximize their asset investments so they’re able to add drivers, grow their fleets, and make more money.

“When I first saw it at Tank Truck Week, it was intimidating and kind of scary looking,” Arledge recalled. “But when you watch it run and understand how the valves work and what the system’s doing, it’s a simple operation. It’s just the timing of valves opening and closing; and using the inches of vacuum inside that tank, the solenoid shifts those valves, closing the system away from the vacuum and opening it up to ambient air with a filter tube. That burst of air comes through in reverse and blows all the product right back into the tank.

“It’s genius, really. I take my hat off to BTI.” John LaGrand, BTI’s AutoLoad national accounts manager, routinely receives similar reactions. He tells curious customers to follow the air. But the official system breakdown is more complex.

AutoLoad maintains system pressures, automates line switches, and ensures tankers fill evenly, keeping tandem axles within weight limits. AutoClean collects the dust generated by dry bulk transfers, keeping materials out of the air and off the ground, and purges the dust filter for 2 seconds every 5 minutes without losing vacuum. And AutoWeigh—the newest system feature—adds a digital display and sensors that measure load weights within hundreds of pounds, so drivers aren’t traveling back and forth between scales and silos.

“We’re not only making the job easier for drivers, we’re saving fleets money on their equipment,” LaGrand said.

Carrier-tested, driver-approved The project team, which included BTI President Andy Boyer and General Manager Todd Watkins, worked with multiple carriers to develop the AutoLoad system. Beelman Trucking supplied hydrated lime for early tests; Bulkmatic deployed the first units on vac tanks carrying PVC resin; and Ee-Jay’s feedback informed the final design, J&M Tank Lines currently runs six AutoLoadequipped tank trailers and retrofits its own equipment with new AutoLoad systems as needed. J&M’s shop subsidiary, Bulk Specialties, is a certified AutoLoad installer.

including valve timing and system controls.

AutoLoad can handle any dry bulk commodity, from semolina flour to adipic acid and carbon black, BTI maintains. But the system delivers the greatest ROI when handling the powderiest dusting materials, said Marc Powers, Ee-Jay owner and president, who currently runs four AutoLoad systems and plans to add two more this year. “When they described what AutoLoad does, it was a no-brainer,” Powers said. “The system eliminates cleaning out rear canisters and blower filters, spills, and the risk of dusting materials destroying the blower.”

The “old way” of dealing with dusting made for a “crummy” driver experience, Powers added, forcing drivers to repeatedly stop and start operations, drag around hoses, climb on equipment, and hammer out clogged filters. Operation involves a slight learning curve—Ee-Jay pairs its most “tech-savvy” drivers with AutoLoad-equipped tankers—but once calibrated, the Bluetooth-connected system boasts “set-it-and-forget-it” simplicity, Powers attested.

Carriers do, too—especially when it comes to preserving time and payload.

“It was taking Bulkmatic anywhere from six to nine hours to unload adipic acid,” Boyer shared. “Teams of drivers were having to shut down two or three times to empty out those 40-in. filtration canisters, and they’d end up throwing away half a super sack of material with every load. After we put AutoLoad in service with them, they got that time down to 90 minutes—with one guy and zero waste.

Failure-free performance Jeff Null, J&M VP of operations, considered adding a second canister to one of J&M’s vacuum tanks to accelerate pickups of a powdery clay that was clogging up the system. Sisk says he’s seen other carriers take a similar approach, but Arledge didn’t want to go that route. He found the solution to J&M’s problem at National Tank Truck Carriers’ signature event in Houston.

Now J&M is running six AutoLoads that are supercharging operations.

“The first time we used it to transfer that clay, the guy who runs the silo said the best vac tanks could only open the butterfly valve to the third notch, and those valves have 10 notches,” Arledge relayed. “Previously, we could only open ours to the first notch, sometimes the second, so we started there, but Todd was with us, and he said we needed to open it more, so we went to the third notch—and it was still starving.

“We ended up opening that butterfly valve wide open, and it loaded 28 tons of product in about 40 minutes.

“On top of that, there wasn’t a coffee cup’s worth of material wasted.”

J&M also utilizes the PD Transfer upgrade for transloading tank cars, one of many applications for the AutoLoad system. And Bulk Specialties

Ee-Jay Motor Transports currently runs four AutoLoadequipped tankers and plans to buy two more. Ee-Jay owner Marc Powers calls system adoption a “no-brainer.”

in Americus, Georgia, is a certified installer of the system, which retrofits to most dry bulk tankers, including units from Tremcar, J&L Tank, and Heil.

They’ve even upfitted Super Flos for J&M and Tidewater Transit.

Another third-party shop partner also supplies AutoLoad-equipped trailers; and BTI offers factory installation via OEM partners, as well as training for carriers and shops that want to expand AutoLoad services.

“We introduced AutoLoad in 2022, so it’s going on for four years now—and we haven’t found one product it can’t handle. The system just keeps running and running.”

A new vac tank standard That reliability, combined with attentive customer service and post sales support, is changing the game, Sisk maintains.

And BTI is so confident in the technology, it allows fleets to test the AutoLoad system for pennies.

“We have trailers set up here we’ll lease out for $1 a month, so people can use the system in the field,” LaGrand said. “So we put our money where our mouth is.

“Come get our trailer and try it out— one time is all it takes.”

Sisk goes further, saying people are starting to realize that not investing in an AutoLoad system is a “huge mistake,” leaving $100,000-plus pieces of equipment grossly underutilized.

“You’re going to see this as a standard spec going forward,” he predicted.

“Either that, or they won’t win new business—because they aren’t going to be competitive.”

He also expects competitors to try, and fail, to recreate the system, which already is compatible with a more automated future.

“It’s an all-around gamechanger for fleets that have been fighting all these problems for years,” LaGrand concluded.

“The investment is a little bit more up front, but it pays for itself so quickly.” BT

Most listings include services offered, but tank truck operators are encouraged to contact the location directly for more information. There is no charge for the basic listings but companies can upgrade listings to include web and email addresses.

The first six items listed on the “Services Key” are the DOT tests and inspections required by federal law. The company also maintains stocking programs with dealers across the country, from truck-part giants like FleetPride to most tank-specific suppliers.

“Relationships with the distributors are critical,” Cravens said. “So we’ve put a big emphasis on that in the last few years, making sure they know what the key parts are and they have them on hand.”

Defying all downturns FTR recently slashed its 2026 trailer production forecast by 45 percentage points, tempering Cravens’ expectations for year-end results amid ongoing tariff uncertainty and rising fuel prices, but Ridewell isn’t panicking. “The market determines our goals, and they’re still based on last year’s forecast,” Cravens said. Instead, Ridewell is staying hot, adding automation, refining processes and designs, and expanding industry partnerships. It recently joined STE to boost support for National Tank Truck Carriers’ industry advocacy efforts.

“Tanks are important to the U.S. economy, and the tank segment is the fastest-growing segment of our business,” Cravens said. “So supporting this industry is extremely important to us.”

And, while every segment Ridewell serves is important to

And Ridewell’s sales and engineering teams are constantly working on new ways to solve problems, whether it’s collaborating with OEM partners to help update their processes or enhance serviceability, adding new capabilities, or using AI to streamline workflows.

“Ridewell is so well-diversified that no one customer generates more than 5% of its business,” Bridges said. “And the company’s never been big on acquisitions or taking on debt.

It’s incredible.

EQUIPMENT NEWS EnTrans acquires B&R Repair in tank service expansion EnTrans International recently acquired B&R Repair in what EnTrans says is the first step in its plan to rebuild and expand its service center business across North America.

The acquisition, which includes full operational control of B&R’s three locations in Lemont, Illinois; Hammond, Indiana; and Wampum, Pennsylvania, is expected to enhance the company’s ability to provide quality aftermarket services and repairs for Heil Trailer, Polar Tank, and LBT customers.

“This is an exciting milestone for EnTrans as we reestablish a dedicated service center platform,” Charlie Gilson, EnTrans senior vice president of parts and service, said in a news release. “B&R has a stellar reputation as a customer-focused operation with deep technical expertise. Their culture and commitment to quality align perfectly with EnTrans. We see significant opportunities to invest in the business, enhance capabilities, and create meaningful synergies within our broader network.

“We are also pleased that Randy May will continue to lead the business as general manager, ensuring continuity for employees and customers while driving the next phase of growth.”

Founded in 1987, B&R started as a father-and-son operation serving the Chicagoland transportation market. May, the current owner, called joining EnTrans a “fantastic opportunity” to build on its strong reputation for quality workmanship and customer commitment. “We’ve spent decades building strong relationships and a reputation for dependable service,” May said. “EnTrans brings the scale, resources, and vision to the next level.

“I’m excited to continue leading the business and expanding our offerings while staying true to the values that got us here.”

EnTrans earns 17th TTMA Plant Safety Award EnTrans International’s trailer manufacturing facility in Athens, Tennessee, where the company produces Heil and Polar Tank trailers, recently received a 2025 Plant Safety Award from the Truck Trailer Manufacturers Association.

TTMA recognized EnTrans’ Athens Trailer Operations plant in Tank Category A for facilities with over 490,000 manhours per year. The award is EnTrans’ 17th TTMA Plant Safety Award, the company reported.

“We are honored to receive this industry-wide recognition from TTMA for our commitment to safety,” Jake Radish, EnTrans president and COO, said in a news release. “Safety is—and always will be—our top priority at EnTrans. We remain focused on protecting our team members and creating an environment that allows them to work safely.”

TTMA has been issuing Plant Safety Awards for over 50 years.

EnTrans plans to steadily expand its tank service network, targeting the addition of new service center locations each year. The initiative comes in response to growing demand for reliable maintenance, inspection, and repair services among the company’s customer base, EnTrans reported.

The company emphasized that its service center strategy is designed to complement, not compete with, its dealer network.

“Our dealer partners are critical to our success—and that will not change,” said Jake Radish, EnTrans president and COO. “We view the expansion of our service centers as complementary to both EnTrans and our dealers’ growth initiatives. These locations will focus solely on service and parts, not new trailer sales, helping to increase overall market capacity.

“We will continue to sell parts through our dealer network as we do today and remain committed to strengthening those partnerships as we grow.”

Fish tale: West-Mark tanks transport 130,000 salmon The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) recently used two WestMark tanks to restock Lake Oroville with 130,000 Chinook salmon fingerlings.

CDFW crews transported the live fish, all ranging from 4 to 6 inches long, 9 miles from the Feather River Fish Hatchery to the Loafer Creek Boat Ramp on Lake Oroville using specialized West-Mark transport equipment, including a “FishTrucka” tank wagon and a “FishTLR-Ta” tandem-axle trailer.

“For decades, our team [in Atwater, California] has engineered the specialized fish transport tankers that move living payloads across California’s hatchery and stocking network,” West-Mark said. “The fingerlings stocked into Oroville [in April] are triploid—sterile—meaning they exist specifically to build out recreational fishing opportunities without risking genetic impact on wild populations. That makes the stocking program valuable. But it also means every fish lost in transit is a fish that can never be replaced through natural reproduction.

“The stakes explain the engineering.

Dissolved oxygen, water temperature, ammonia buildup, and mechanical stress during transit are all variables that can turn a conservation release into a total loss inside of minutes. West-Mark’s fish transport platforms are not retrofitted water trucks.

They are rolling life-support ecosystems— purpose-built, instrumented, and insulated— designed to hold water chemistry stable mile after mile through the Central Valley heat.”

Lake Oroville serves 27 million California residents. It also supplies water back to the Feather River Fish Hatchery, so every fish entering the lake has to be certified disease-free. CDFW rigorously tests every release for pathogens before a single tanker rolls out, West-Mark said.

A Fox40 news crew covered the release, and their story drew praise from conservation and angling communities and generated the “good-natured humor you only get from a region that knows what’s rolling down the highway in those tankers,” West-Mark said.
