EDITORS’ LETTER Dear Friends, My dad recently introduced me to the 20 under 20 Thiel Fellowship which awards grants up to $100,000.00 to 20 young people under the age of 20. The criteria for this amazing gift: They have to be visionaries! Of course there is more to it than that but the core of this innovative fellowship is to launch young people whose ideas quite possibly might change the world - ideas which cannot afford to be buried under years of the “traditional” way of carrying out one’s life ie. four years of college, then grad school, or a job in the real world and so on. As I read about these fellows I found myself imagining how incredible they must Check out page 30 to see our silliest idea. 4

be, wondering how they came to be that way and where they would end up and then I thought...the incredible thing is that my life has come into contact with equally as incredible people. We just closed our first issue on a visionary who I was humbled to have been able to share in the telling of her story. Now the story continues with a woman whom I am privileged to call my friend. She has embraced all aspects of her life with a rare combination of grace and gusto. She can rock a pair of heels, tear up the slopes on her snowboard, love on her kids, husband and husky like only she can, cook the most incredible gourmet food you’ve ever tasted, capture beautiful seconds through the lens of her camera and that’s only the beginning.

well, to care, to serve and to live out one’s individual gifts as well. Her story is waiting to be read and because she is a wedding photographer, this will also be the first of our “Wedding” issues. BUT! To give it a little DOCICA twist, in each issue we will also have a “Not-So-Wedding” feature. Enjoy, be inspired, and join us again next Friday! xoxo- Jen

How does all of that equate to being a visionary? It takes vision to see how to live all areas of your life well...to find the balance, to house a beautiful heart, to love well, to play JUNE 2011 DOCICA .com

udging the book by its cover, I figured Madonna’s English Roses was an attempt to “motherfy” herself just like every other Hollywood star. With my hand propped and my hip cocked I sassily flipped through its pages waiting for a reason to shut it. But as I read the words, I un-cocked my hip, dropped my hand, and cozied up in the a tiny childsized library chair. To my surprise Madonna’s words made me want to stand up and say “hold up”....she’s got something here. Could it be that this gorgeous pop star that I judged as daft had wisdom I needed to hear? 10

HOLD UP!

English Roses’ main Cinderella-like character, Binah, is a Betty in all ways. She has beauty, smarts, and compassion. The only problem is, although she is loved by all, she is hated by a preteen clique nicknamed

the “English Roses”. Composed of four girls Nicole, Charlotte, Amy, and Grace the English Roses are stuck at the hip; they agree on practically everything, including their hatred of Binah. When Nicole’s mother JUNE 2011 DOCICA .com

attempts to assist the English Roses in analyzing their hatred she realizes that they are “green with envy”. That’s right these girls are jealous. In true Cinderella storylike fashion the English Roses are visited in a dream by a fairy godmother who transports them to Binah’s house. Of course Binah’s life is not at all what it seems like on the outside...sure she is beautiful, but since her mother died she is responsible for all the chores missing out on pre-teen life. For the sake of not spoiling the story I will stop 12

there with my re-cap, but you get the idea. Binah the beautiful one was hated by other girls simply because she was beautiful inside and out. I must confess I am so guilty. I am caught red-handed. It happens when I go to a new party, a restaurant, the pool (definitely there...all those brazen babes in bikinis) or even library storytime!!! I walk in the room find the most gorgeous put-together girl and make assumptions.

WE PROMISE No for real this girl (our good friend Brie) is not a model...she is the real deal. Lovely in all ways.

ASSUMPTIONS “She thinks she is so great. What is she God’s gift? I am sure she loves looking in the mirror. I mean really, who has no cellulite like that? Wow, how long did that hair-do take? Who has the time to look like that? Sure I could look like that if I stayed home and jogged all day, too. Man life would be easy if I got an inheritance like she did. Must be nice to be a double-D (yep I said that). Did she have work done? She thinks she is really something....at least I am real with how messed up I am.”

The

list goes on and on with ways I can judge other women. Just like the English Roses, it is easy to make the problem about “them” when really the problem lies within me. I at times am “green with envy”. That’s right I get jealous. Like a yummy fig tree that loses its fruit with each envious thought I become a bitter withered trunk. My jealousy kills me. Nothing scrumptious about that... is there? I know as you have followed us for the last couple of months you have seen into the lives of two extraordinary women, Asher Collie & Sunday

Grant. While it is easy to stare at their lives and marvel, it is just as easy to turn green. We have shown off their beauty in several ways: life, home, style, and recipes....but one thing you should know is we picked these ladies because in their beauty they are unpretentious. Take Sunday, for instance, she continually looks like a million bucks but she is unafraid to run through the rain on my birthday just to give me a hug. She gets on the floor and plays with her kids. She introduces herself to new people in the room at a party. She looks at her pictures and reads about herself and says “you really think that of me?” JUNE 2011 DOCICA .com

15

STUNNING style

If I judged Sunday’s books by its cover I would surely miss out on the sweetest part of her-her friendship. Do yourself a favor today...when you see that girl across the room that has it all together walk on over and extend your hand. Give her a good handshake and ask her out to a coffee or a playdate with your kids. Let your little girls see you make new friends rather than gossip with your clique. May the next generation never be hated because they are beautiful. 16

UNWAY Co-founders Jennifer Hyman (Jenn) and Jennifer Fleiss (Jenny) met as sectionmates at Harvard Business School, where over frequent girls nights, they became fast friends. During a trip home to New York City, Jenn watched her sister Becky struggle with a‘closet full of clothes but nothing to wear’moment. Becky had an upcoming wedding and wanted something gorgeous—Hervé Léger maybe, or Proenza—but her modest salary meant that everything high-end was out of reach. What if, Jenn thought, the Beckys of this world could have access to their dream closet – a new dress for every occasion? And what if designers were able to get their pieces into the hands of young, fashionable women and build an addiction for designer fashion?

We have heard of this idea for years, but on a recent visit to our friends at Altmix Photography’s website we saw it action. We laughed, and laughed, and laughed. Then we cried and said, “Why didn’t we think of that?” Photobooths are all the rage at millennial weddings, but they are also rising up at other shindigs such as office parties, birthday parties, halloween parties, and graduations. The concept goes something like this: hire a photographer (such as our talented friends at Altmix Photography) or a Smilebooth representative (visit www.smilebooth.com) to set up a photobooth at your event. Then the booth is relatively self explanatory; it comes with a backdrop, props (if are feeling really creative these are customizable), and a camera with a remote. (Rather than a tight booth like those of

DEA

our middle school mall days, a photobooth is a wide 10 by 10 or so area). This allows tons of people to hop in and act nuts, making for the ultimate wedding and event photos following. Depending on the company you use, the images will then be posted online for viewing and purchasing. What a silly, yet brilliant idea.

BLOG EXCERPT FROM 6.14.2011 We have been home from Ethiopia for two months now.  I don’t even know what to say about that.  When I think about being there - riding in the back seat of a taxi with no seatbelt and a baby strapped to my chest, hanging on for dear life - it seems like it was just yesterday.  When I look at my babies, it seems like an eternity.  They have changed so much in such a short time, and while I am sad that they’re growing so fast, I am incredibly thankful that they are growing and healthy, that they’re home with us, and that we’ve been a family for 13 weeks now.

I still haven’t fully processed our time in Ethiopia - it’s so hard to describe the whole adoption experience, so I thought maybe a video would do? While not the best quality, (we had no notice that we would be meeting our children, so we’re a little flustered) this video (CLICK HERE TO VIEW) is so precious to me.  Watching it reminds me of the excitement, nervousness, and overwhelming love that I felt meeting our babies for the first time.

how to create a: WATCH ME GROW SERIES TEXT BY BRITT WITH GUS AND LULA

Blog excerpt 5.26.11

Have y’all seen some of the really amazing “Watch me grow” photo series that parents have put together? Like this one? The premise is to take a photo each week (or day or month) so you have a visual log of your baby’s growth. Keith and I thought that it would be fun to snap a photo of Gus and Lula every Sunday (while they’re semi-clean and dressed) and put together our own photo series. We’ve been home for five Sundays now (really?!? How did that happen?). We have 3 photos. Oh well. Maybe we’ll turn it into a monthly thing. more of the series on the next page 44

SOMETHING BORROWED STUNNING style

Text & Styling by Mel Wilson Photography by Jen Haynes

Something borrowed. (You know the saying). This is generally a hanky from great grandma Eleanor or a broach from Aunt Linda. What if instead this was a dress borrowed from a friend? A dress. Yes, a dress. I know it is a crazy idea. A ridiculous idea. Every girl wants to be the belle of the ball on her wedding day, which generally means the dress is pricey. But, what if a friends simple dress could become all your own in a matter of seconds spending only $5 or under. Here are a few of our top ideas: 1. PAPER FLOWER HAT Paper flowers are all the rage. (Check out Martha Stewart Weddings newest cover with paper flowers on the cake!!!) So we took 12 pieces of scalloped tissue paper (for $1.50) and layered them on top of each other. Then we folded the whole bunch like an accordion and twist tied the center. Next we fluffed up the layers starting with the top one to make 1/2 a flower. Attached it to a head band. Bellisimo!

48

JUNE 2011 DOCICA .com

We borrowed this dress from Sunday Grant to see what we could come up with.

With all the hype & marketing ploys brides endure about spending more on their wedding, we brainstormed on simple ways a girl might be able to save.

2. Feathered Pin on A Sash Feathered pins (so vintage) are found all over BHLDN.com (Anthropologie’s new wedding line). So we recreated their look using a dollar store boa and a vintage broach from our friend’s grandma. Simply take one end of the boa and coil it up like a boa constricter tying the ends together at the end. Then pin the broach through the middle of the coil, and sew on a sash.

Or purchase a custom tutorial from JewelBox Ballerina.com Flower pin photos courtesy of JewelBox Ballerina

3. Lace Bolero This spring’s runway shows were filled with lace, lace, lace. We took a twist on the classic ivory or white, by finding a $5 blouse at a consignment store and cutting off the bottom of the shirt. Then we simple slipped the top over the dress and pinned it with vintage broach. Stunningly ingenious.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Joey and I are both from Baton Rouge, LA and met as freshmen in high school. We were never more than friends and graduated high schooltogether and then both went on to LSU. We were both on separate paths for years after college and did not see each other until 9 years after graduating high school. A friend had a casual dinner to get some ofour old friends together to catch up. Joey and I were both there and we have been together ever since! (He looked pretty handsome that night! haha!) We had been dating for about a year and a half and Joey totally surprised me and proposed on my birthday last July! We went to the farmers market in downtown Baton Rouge and shared breakfast and coffee then he took me for a walk in the park. We walked to the top of an Indian mound and Joey got down on one knee :) I had NO idea and it was PERFECT! 60

JUNE 2011 DOCICA .com

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ASHEVILLE AREA FOR YOUR WEDDING? Joey had gotten a job in Asheville and we decided that we wanted to start our lives together here in the mountains. We love the area so much and feel such a connection to it that we decided we wanted to have our wedding in North Carolina instead of in Louisiana. The mission was to have a beautiful mountain wedding for all of our friends and family so that they would always want to come back! Mission accomplished!!! Joey and I are both from large families. I am the second of 6 and Joey is the baby of 5! Our siblings are scattered all over the US so it was the perfect opportunity to get everyone in the same place. Another fun fact is that I am the first in my family to get married and Joey was the last! We chose to have our ceremony at the Basilica of St Lawrence in Asheville and our reception at the Bella Luna Inn in Black Mountain (a bed and breakfast). More than anything, we wanted our wedding to be FUN and a new experience for everyone coming.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU? We both love nature and have a common appreciation for how great a beautiful day makes you feel. We are both SUPER laid back! The most important thing to us both was that our wedding not take on a life of its own!!! I wanted simple, rustic, springy, sunshiney, laid-back mountain fun! WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE DAY? I couldn’t even pick a favorite part if I tried...so Ill give you my top 3! Having all of our familiy and friends in the most beautiful place at the same time to celebrate! (that may never happen again!!!) The trolley ride the entire (HUGE) bridal party took from the Basilica through downtown Asheville, through the tunnel and all the way down Hwy 70 to Black Mountain for the reception. It was AWESOME!!! And of course...the BEST part of the day was becoming husband and wife! I got to marry my absolute favorite person in the entire world!
